Ask the Experts about this Dexter Axle Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

  • Spring Hanger Spacing Dimensions for a Tandem Axle Slipper Spring Suspension on a 14,0000 lb Trailer
The hanger spacing for a tandem axle trailer suspension setup can be determined, but you need to take into account the axle spacing needed for the overall diameter of your wheel and tire combination and the springs you will be using. Lets say that you plan on using 4 of the 5-Leaf Slipper Springs, # SP-232275, for 7,000-lb Trailer Axles, and that your wheel and tire combinations are the Karrier ST235/85R16 Wheel and Tire, # AM32764. The AM32764 wheel and tires overall diameter is...

  • Any Leaf Springs Designed for Boat Trailers Used in Salt Water
They do not have leaf springs that are specifically designed for boat trailers that are used in salt water. Since the leaf springs will flex there is no kind of plating or coating that will stay attached to the spring. Also, the process that is used to plate or coat a part can use high temperatures that could cause premature failure of the spring. As long as you get the leaf springs with the correct weight rating and the correct measurements to fit your boat trailer you should have no...

  • Trailer Spring Hanger Spacing for 35-Inch-Apart Tandem Axles
The correct hanger spacing for your trailer will depend on several factors; I cannot generalize and give you a specific figure. Hanger spacing depends on spring length, the size of the equalizers used and the length of the shackle straps. The linked article will give you general information about double-eye suspensions including each of the components that make up a trailer suspension system.

  • How to Determine Hanger Spacing on a Tandem Axle Trailer with 6K Axles and Slipper Spring Suspension
The hanger spacing is going to depend on a few things including the spring measurements and the equalizers being used. But if you were using spring # SP-160275 the distance between the hangers would be around 29-3/4 inches. However this is using hanger kit # AP202-H202 with 10-1/8 inch equalizers. If you were using kit # AP216-H202 the hanger spacing guideline would be 31-1/2 inches because the equalizers are longer. So you can see that it changes depending on the components being used. Also,...

  • How to Determine the Right Replacement Hangers for a Trailer with Slipper Spring Suspension
To determine the correct slipper spring replacement hangers you will need to measure the ones you have now and also determine the style that you have. I have included a link to our slipper spring main page to the right for you. Once you know the measurements of the hangers you have and the style you can use the charts on the page to find the correct replacement.

  • Recommended Minimum Distance Between Tandem Trailer Axle Tires
As a general rule of thumb the minimum safe distance between front and rear tires on the same side of a tandem axle trailer is 4 inches.

  • What is the Minimum Safe Distance Between Tires on a Tandem Axle Trailer
The general consensus here at etrailer is that the minimum safe distance between tires on the same side of a tandem axle trailer is 4 inches. Technically speaking, you will need a minimum of 1 inch between the tires with the suspension in full flex which is when the tires will be the closest together. There are several things to consider when going to larger tires. First, some folks think that using larger tires will allow them to carry more weight. But you still are limited by the capacity...

  • How To Raise Trailer to Allow It to Be Towed Level With Taller Truck
Typically lifting the trailer suspension is the best solution for situations like what you described. You can do this by moving the axles from being above the leaf springs to below the leaf springs. The diameter of your trailer axle will determine the size of the parts that you will need to order. If your axle is 3 inches diameter, the Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit, # K71-385-00, would be a great choice and if your axle is 2-3/8 inch diameter you could use the...

  • What Would Make Front and Rear or Middle and Rear Trailer Tires Make Contact with Each Other
On a tandem or a triple axle trailer, if the front and rear tires or middle and rear tires make contact with each other then some part of the suspension, which could include the mounts that attach the axle to the suspension, could be broken or worn so much that it allows a lot of movement. You will want to inspect the suspension components for anything broken or signs of severe wear. Usually the wear you will see is egg-shaped holes instead of round holes where the springs hang. If the...
