Video Transcript for CE Smith U-Bolt Kit for Round Trailer Axles Review

Speaker 1: Today, we'll be having a look at the CE Smith line of U-bolt mounting kits for mounting round trailer axles. Here's what our kit comes with. It's everything you need for replacing the U-bolts on a single axle on your trailer. We have 4 new U-bolts, you'll have 2 per side; 2 new plates, 1 per side; 8 new lock washers, you'll be using 4 for each side of the trailer; and 8 new nuts, again 4 for each side of the trailer. You can see how well our U-bolts grip around the contours of our axle. This'll keep the axle firmly attached to our leaf springs, so we don't have to worry about it slipping and sliding. Now because we have the zinc and the galvanized finish on our plate and our hardware, this will better protect them from corrosion from the elements, especially salt spray. It's not an issue if you decide to use them on a boat trailer such as this one.Now many of our customers have had to make a second phone call or send an email to us after they bought a new axle for their trailer because they found, once they tried to remove the old one or put the new one on, that they couldn't get their factory U-bolts off.

They had to cut them off, and now they're searching for a replacement. This kit will be a perfect solution for this problem here. Now many of our customers compared these to the Redline line of U-bolt kits. Now the main difference you're going to see between this one and those is that those do not have the galvanized or the zinc finish on the plates or the hardware, which will cause them to rust out faster. As you can see, we already have our new axle sitting on top of our leaf springs. Now this kit could work for an axle that sits on top or below your leaf springs. It works for both applications.

You don't need to worry if yours resides below, you can still use this kit for that. We'll start by taking our new U-bolts and dropping them over our axle on either side of our leaf spring. Now we'll take our new plate. We want to make sure that this flange right here faces down, this hole here in the center lines up with the alignment pin on our leaf spring, and we'll insert our U-bolts through the holes. Place on our lock washers, and we'll put that on our nuts. Now we can start to tighten our hardware, making sure we tighten them evenly as possible. Now we'll torque our hardware again, making sure we alternate to ensure that we're doing it as evenly as possible. And that completes our look at the CE Smith line of U-bolt kits for mounting round trailer axles..

I bought a trailer that someone had reversed the axle and did some “REDNECK ENGINEERING “on. I put the axle back where it was supposed to be by using U bolts I had ordered. Everything fit perfect. Now trailer is back like it was supposed to be, thanks to etrailer and Jane. She was so helpful and follow up on my order was exceptional. I know I can always count on etrailer to get what I need at a fair price. THANKS

I am extremely happy with the purchase of my leafsprings for my 8x5 single axle trailer. It was easy to install and fit perfect. It made getting back on the road and hauling loads much easier after my old one snapped in half while hauling a load of dirt. Definitely will by from etrailer again and plan to in the near future.

- CE23002
by:

The quality seemed good but causing doubt was that the holes in the plates were not totally cleaned out and had to be reamed out in order for the U bolts to go through. Not sure if it was the galvanizing that might have caused this. Either way, it seems like poor quality control.

  • Torque Spec for Tightening Nuts of 1/2 inch Diameter Trailer Suspension U-Bolts
For 1/2 inch trailer u-bolts that attach to axle the recommended torque value is between 45 and 70 ft lbs of torque.

  • Can 7/16" U-Bolts be Used for 3,500 lb Axle Suspension
As long as the 7/16" U-Bolts that you are using fit your 3,500 lb axle diameter correctly and they are rated for a 3,500 lb axle then you are good to go. We only carry 1/2" U-Bolts, parts # CE23002 and # APUBR-1, but when I reached out to my contact at Dexter Axle, who is one of the leading axle manufacturers, they said that 7/16" U-Bolts are fairly common for 3,500 lb axles.

  • Replacement Suspension Components for a 1987 Corey Dual Axle Trailer
It is always best to replace your suspension components on your trailer with products that are the exact same size as what you currently have. We do have the U-Bolt Kit # CE23002 which is for 3,500 lb axles that have a 2-3/8" diameter and these are 5-1/2" long. I would double check your 5,500 lb axle as that is not a capacity that I am familiar with. It may be a 3,500 lb that could have been misread as 5,500. You can also measure the diameter to verify that it has a larger capacity....

  • Is the CE Smith U-Bolt Kit 23002 2-3/8 Inches Wide or 2-7/16 Inches Wide
The 2-3/8" measurement you are referring to on the CE Smith U-Bolt Kit part # CE23002 is in regards to the diameter of trailer axle that the kit is designed to be used with. The actual width of the u-bolt from the inside edge of each bolt is 2-7/16" and the diameter is 1/2". We do not have a u-bolt with a 2-3/8" width and a 3/8" diameter. However, as mentioned above if this is for a 2-3/8" (3,500 lb) trailer axle then you will want to use one that is slightly larger than the width of the...
