Video Transcript for CE Smith U-Bolt Kit for Round Trailer Axles Review

Speaker 1: Today, we'll be having a look at the CE Smith line of U-bolt mounting kits for mounting round trailer axles. Here's what our kit comes with. It's everything you need for replacing the U-bolts on a single axle on your trailer. We have 4 new U-bolts, you'll have 2 per side; 2 new plates, 1 per side; 8 new lock washers, you'll be using 4 for each side of the trailer; and 8 new nuts, again 4 for each side of the trailer. You can see how well our U-bolts grip around the contours of our axle. This'll keep the axle firmly attached to our leaf springs, so we don't have to worry about it slipping and sliding. Now because we have the zinc and the galvanized finish on our plate and our hardware, this will better protect them from corrosion from the elements, especially salt spray. It's not an issue if you decide to use them on a boat trailer such as this one.Now many of our customers have had to make a second phone call or send an email to us after they bought a new axle for their trailer because they found, once they tried to remove the old one or put the new one on, that they couldn't get their factory U-bolts off.

They had to cut them off, and now they're searching for a replacement. This kit will be a perfect solution for this problem here. Now many of our customers compared these to the Redline line of U-bolt kits. Now the main difference you're going to see between this one and those is that those do not have the galvanized or the zinc finish on the plates or the hardware, which will cause them to rust out faster. As you can see, we already have our new axle sitting on top of our leaf springs. Now this kit could work for an axle that sits on top or below your leaf springs. It works for both applications.

You don't need to worry if yours resides below, you can still use this kit for that. We'll start by taking our new U-bolts and dropping them over our axle on either side of our leaf spring. Now we'll take our new plate. We want to make sure that this flange right here faces down, this hole here in the center lines up with the alignment pin on our leaf spring, and we'll insert our U-bolts through the holes. Place on our lock washers, and we'll put that on our nuts. Now we can start to tighten our hardware, making sure we tighten them evenly as possible. Now we'll torque our hardware again, making sure we alternate to ensure that we're doing it as evenly as possible. And that completes our look at the CE Smith line of U-bolt kits for mounting round trailer axles..

I upgraded from a single leaf 3500lb axle spring to a 4 leaf 4000lb axle spring and also upgraded the U-bolts. The upgrade went very well. Everything fit perfect. The trailer tire to fender clearance was only 1.5 inches (at best) before the upgrade, now it is 3.5 inches. This will help the tire from rubbing the fender on the rough and bumpy road that we have in the state.

Nice looking U bolts for 1.75" springs, bought two kits for my 2 new axles I bought. They came with new hardware, I did add a bit of locktite to the threads since it only came with lock washers, but overall, a must have for any new axle install.

by:

Replaced worn out springs and hardware. Everything fit and went better than expected. Simple enough to do yourself. Thanks

by:

Shipping was much faster than expected. Customer service was excellent and a representative reached out to modify my order for faster delivery due to an item being back ordered. A replacement item was selected and everything arrived soon after order confirmation. All items arrived well packaged and exactly as I ordered it. I would definitely order from etrailer again.

by:

u bolt kit worked well as planned

by:

Fast shipping and great product as described. These are more heavy duty then the ones we took off the PJ trailer. Extremely satisfied.

by:

Brent was awesome!! Helped me get the correct parts I needed. I ordered in a Wednesday midmorning and received everything the following day with free shipping. I will buy all my trailer needs from etrailer.com and will use Brent.

by:

I bought a trailer that someone had reversed the axle and did some “REDNECK ENGINEERING “on. I put the axle back where it was supposed to be by using U bolts I had ordered. Everything fit perfect. Now trailer is back like it was supposed to be, thanks to etrailer and Jane. She was so helpful and follow up on my order was exceptional. I know I can always count on etrailer to get what I need at a fair price. THANKS

by:

I only had the trailer for 3 months after installing them. But I really noticed a big difference in the ride of the trailer. I installed the same on my new trailer with the same results. Way better ride.

by:

The packing was horrible and box end was completely open and had parts missing when delivered. If they would of bubbles wrapped items in box and put hardware in a sealed bag it might of got here in better condition. I had to go purchase 13 nuts before I could complete my repair and the worst thing is I already paid for them once.

Worked well. Get your dremel tool ready the holes in the plates are punched out and there tends to be tails of metal left over from the punch that you must ream out to get the bolt through.

  • Replacement Suspension Components for a 1987 Corey Dual Axle Trailer
It is always best to replace your suspension components on your trailer with products that are the exact same size as what you currently have. We do have the U-Bolt Kit # CE23002 which is for 3,500 lb axles that have a 2-3/8" diameter and these are 5-1/2" long. I would double check your 5,500 lb axle as that is not a capacity that I am familiar with. It may be a 3,500 lb that could have been misread as 5,500. You can also measure the diameter to verify that it has a larger capacity. An...

  • Is the CE Smith U-Bolt Kit 23002 2-3/8 Inches Wide or 2-7/16 Inches Wide
The 2-3/8" measurement you are referring to on the CE Smith U-Bolt Kit part # CE23002 is in regards to the diameter of trailer axle that the kit is designed to be used with. The actual width of the u-bolt from the inside edge of each bolt is 2-7/16" and the diameter is 1/2". We do not have a u-bolt with a 2-3/8" width and a 3/8" diameter. However, as mentioned above if this is for a 2-3/8" (3,500 lb) trailer axle then you will want to use one that is slightly larger than the width of the...

  • Will U-Bolt Mounting Kit for 1-3/4 Inch Diameter Axles Fit 2 Inch Diameter Axles
The U-bolts on a kit like # CE23000 would not fit on a true 2" diameter axle. The inner width is 1-7/8" which would be just enough to fit on a 1-3/4" diameter axle. I recommend measuring your axle again, or measuring the inner width of your old U-bolts. Your typical 2" axle would be a square axle, and more than likely you actually have a 1-3/4" axle. Your round axle is going to have a 1-3/4" or 2-3/8" diameter. If you find that it is actually 2-3/8" you would need the # CE23002 instead.

  • Should I Paint U-Bolts to Protect Finish
If you are concerned about rust and corrosion, an excellent option for you is the CE Smith U-Bolt Kit for Mounting # CE23002 which comes with galvanized plates and zinc-plated hardware. The u-bolts included are also 5-1/2 inches long and 1/2 in diameter just like in the APUBR-1 kit. You can apply a coat of rust-resistant paint to the U-Bolt Kit # APUBR-1 if you want to but it's not required. In fact, most people don't because these components, while susceptible to rust, are not directly...

  • Can 7/16" U-Bolts be Used for 3,500 lb Axle Suspension
As long as the 7/16" U-Bolts that you are using fit your 3,500 lb axle diameter correctly and they are rated for a 3,500 lb axle then you are good to go. We only carry 1/2" U-Bolts, parts # CE23002 and # APUBR-1, but when I reached out to my contact at Dexter Axle, who is one of the leading axle manufacturers, they said that 7/16" U-Bolts are fairly common for 3,500 lb axles.

You will need the Dexter 3,500LB Trailer Axle w/ Electric Brakes # 7359765-EB to replace your axle on your 2012 Gatormade 16' lowboy trailer. According to the measurements(95" hub, 80-1/4" spring center) you provided as well as the information I could find this is the same axle the manufacturer installed with the electric brakes. The 1/4" difference on the spring center is likely a combination of tolerances and the axle loosing the slight curve and as it straightened got slightly longer....

This will most likely lower your trailer by a little over 3 inches. You need a new u-bolt kit for your axle, so I recommend the CE Smith U-Bolt Kit for Mounting 3,500-lb, Round Trailer Axles - 5-1/2" Long U-Bolts - Zinc # CE23002 if your axle is 2-3/8 inch diameter or # CE23003 if...
