How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

I installed this on a construction tool cargo trailer. This trailer is outfitted with solar and a battery bank so an electric jack was a no brainer since I already had plenty of power storage. I didn't want to install in the stock jack location so that I could fully open my truck's tailgate. I was able to find a bolt-on jack bracket from a different online store, which made for a easy installation without welding. The same electrician that installed the solar and batteries wired the jack into the elec system and he said it was slick. The trailer has several thousand pounds of tongue weight and this jack has no problem lifting it. The memory settings are handy. This saves quite a bit of time connecting and disconnecting. With the push of a button the trailer jack lifts or lowers automatically while I deal with the safety chains, break away cable, and 7 prong plug. Just as advertised it lifts very quickly even under load. It was installed about a year ago and it's still going strong. I give this a 5 star rating without hesitation. Strong, durable, and well made.

I Love the speed of its raising and lowering. I loved the memory button. Haven't used my trailer all winter and when I went to hook it up, I pressed memory #1 and it raised up to the position to back underneath it. How cool is that? To me, this is the number one best jack on the market.

It still works great, fast up and down, still remembers the hookup position. Best trailer lift ever.

I LOVE this jack.
I cant stand pushing
a jack button and waiting forever for the jack to run up or down, I wanted something faster. This is it!!
No issues lifting my loaded race trailer, smooth operation, no standing in the rain for 10 minutes waiting for it to run up off the ball of the truck. Best accessory I ever bought for my trailer.
Definitely recommend!

My jack actually stopped working about a month ago. It had plenty of power, batteries charged, truck hooked up, nothing mattered, all it did was beep when you pushed the button. I called UltraFab and explained the situation. The woman I spoke to said that there were a couple of years that some had control panel problems. She immediately got me another jack shipped and I received it 4 days later. What a great company with great customer service!! A lot of companies would say youre just sol but UltraFab stood behind their product 100 I will forever be an UltraFab customer!!

10YR Warranty is a joke!
First unit received
worked fine for 6-7months till a very strong rain storm shorted it out.
Etrailer did a 'courtesy' warranty, charged me for expedited shipping and a replacement showed up. Replacement unit sounded terrible when in use, but functioned for a few months till it started NOT responding to the buttons. I figured it was 'buggy'. 3 weeks ago turning on power to the trailer and the jack lowered itself without any user input. This happened again at a race last weekend when we used the generator. Randomly the trailer jack lowered to the ground.

Imagine it RAISING the trailer randomly....like when driving down the highway pulling a 10,000lb trailer at speed. That can KILL someone.

Best part, etrailer informed me the 10yr 'warranty' is only valid for the FIRST replacement. There is NO WARRANTY for the unit that replaced the original!

by:

I have had 6 trips with the Phoenix 4000 and it worked great for first 4 . Hooking up for 5th trip I pressed button to raise . Button lite up for a second then turned off. Trailer did not raise . I turned power off then back on hoping to reboot and it worked.
It failed again at camp . I used ratchet to operate. When I got home I found 30 amp fuse blown inside of camper . I replaced fuse . I also believe inline fuse provided was loose at spring so I replaced with30 amp blade style fuse . It has worked perfectly now and hoping it will continue.

by:

I'm on my fourth warranty replacement right now, the latest one has been redesigned to solve the problem I kept having with their control pads. Hopefully nothing else breaks but I have very little faith in ultra fabs designs. Their warranty on the other hand is second to none, call them up and they will get you a new one in the mail right away. At the end, their jacks were only lasting a handful of travels before they died so at that point I could care less what bells and whistles it has as far as memory settings and a remote, I just need to not get me stuck; the jacks kept malfunctioning and would randomly fully extend and stop responding. Imagine my frustration when this happened while driving and my stupid jack started scraping the road I had stop in the middle of the highway with no way to get it back down.

by:

Just installed the jack and compared to the one provided on the travel trailer, it appears much more robust. I purchased this jack for the extended warranty and the ability to manually extend and retract the jack with a socket and drill. The top of the jack was cracked upon receipt despite the foam padding. Ultra Fab was eager to send a replacement top at no cost immediately. Love the customer service.

by:

I like the Fast Jack and the memory function seems like it'll be great. It did get damaged during shipping but we're going to silicone it up and use it. Shipping packaging could be better.

by:

Easy install. Love the memory functions and speed of operation. Also, how can you beat a 10 year warranty?!?!?

by:

Very happy with the performance of this trailer jack. The speed is so fast and it has held up very well.

by:

I have bought a few items from Etrailer and have found them to be one of the best company to do business with. When I have a question or a issue (which was my fault) they help me solve any problem I had. They have a very fast and very competent customer service department. I can't say enough good about them. This Phoenix Electric Trailer Jack - A-Frame - 22-1/2" Lift - 4,000 lbs unit works great. It lifts my car hauler quickly, and with ease. Based on other reviews, I was unclear if the tailgate on my Chevy 2500 would fully open with this jack installed. I installed it with the controls facing to the drivers side to provide additional clearance. With weight on the trucks receiver, the tailgate just contacts the jack when opening, but will fully open. If the jack is extended, and the receiver / tongue is raised, it provides enough clearance to open fully without contact. I'm very happy with this purchase.

by:

I have these jacks on my fish house so they have been used in -25F temps. The jacks work great and they are fast.

Still working as should but one jack sounds a little rough on retract.

@Richard Has the jack ever been over extended or retracted? Doing so can damage the jack. The jack is covered by a 2-year warranty.

by:

worked great for 1 year, 4 months. I will be submitting warranty claim. the jack suddenly popped a fuse and stopped working. my electrician checked it and says it is an internal dead short in the motor. lucky me....

This jack does have a two year warranty and I will send over the warranty return instructions to you.

by:

Keep scrolling!
This jack has been replaced
twice now within a year. Thankfully Phoenix does send a replacement but having a 16' enclosed trailer stuck to your truck gets old quick. Also, the option to manually turn the jack by hand does not work when the jack freezes up

by:

Easy to install, works very well. Mounting the unit sideways to provide more clearance for the tailgate makes the light point sideways. All fasteners come up from the below which eliminates the possibility for rust. Nice design...

by:

THIS JACK IS BY FAR THE FASTEST AND MOST USER FRIENDLY.I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS JACK.

by:

This is the best jack I have had (and I seem to have gone thru quite a few). It was a quick and easy install for a replacement and I have found it is the fastest jack to raise or lower my hitch. It is also one of the quietest I have ever used. Great for early morning packing and not waking up all the neighbors. :) The jack seems a lot stronger than other jacks I have used and better built with less plastic on it than most. Would definitely replace any manufacture supplied jack on a new trailer with this one again on a heartbeat!

I have had a problem with the switch on this jack. It was the first generation of the jack. I spoke with Ultrafab and they replaced the whole jack with a new one without any issue to correct the issue. I am very impressed with the Jack and especially the great customer service! Cant be beat!

by:

Easy install. Other than the speed of this jack the best feature is you can mount the front of the jack facing the drivers side so you now have room to lower your tailgate without it hitting the jack.

by:

etrailer sent me a used electric jack that another customer returned because it was defective. I know it's defective because the the email between the customer and Greg S at customer service was inside the box. The box was obviously very damaged, taped in areas that were torn, had someone else's shipping label on it, and the jack was filthy. Byron H and Scott H (the two that gathered and packaged my shipment) should have to go remedial training on how to do their jobs. Every item I ordered was opened, there were multiple items just loosely thrown in with one heavy box bouncing around. Terrible experience with etrailer. Sucks when a company stops caring about quality and would rather just let customer service fix their issues. Way to ruin it for the customer!

After only a few uses the jack quit working. First the memory settings kept getting "forgotten". I reprogramed them twice before they quite working altogether. I kept using it without the presets but later it would not go up and down. I had to use a wrench and the provided socket to to move the jack which was much harder than expected. While I was turning the jack it started running, ripped the wrench out of my hand, and the wrench handle put a hole in my propane tank cover. The manufacture replaced the jack at no charge but would not do anything about my propane cover. After using the 2nd jack awhile in now is making clicking noises as the tongue is lowering. It sounds like maybe there is a tooth missing on one of the gears. My tongue weight is around 1400 lbs so well below the rating yet the jack does not seem to be holding up well even though it is not use all that often.

Otherwise I do like the jack. It is fast and the memory presets are a nice convenience. I also like that the head is smaller than other similar units.

by:

Very smooth and quiet operation, and seems to be plenty powerful for my trailer. Easy install and no issues after one year. Very happy with this jack.

by:

Works well and is VERY fast.
Strong enough
to lift the back of my pickup up. (raised it a little to far when putting on my weight distribution hitch.)

To make it go up or down just a little bit, press firmly and release. If you try to tap it lightly, and do it twice too fast, the jack will go ALL THE WAY in that direction.

It would be very nice if it came with a weather proof cover. (No bright logo please. People would know it is a good one and might wish to steal the jack.)

by:

Best jack out there. The fast up and down speed along with the 2-button memory makes this jack the best one out there in my opinion. Mine had 2 memory buttons (a lot of the promo material suggested only 1 memory button) so I can set one for the extended/hitching position, and a second for the fully retracted position. Thus, I never need to hold extend/retract...rather I just hit one of the memory buttons and it does the rest. Huge time saver. To set the memory on mine I hold the desired memory button and wait for the light to flash red (not green like the manual said). The drop foot is also a nice feature. I would strongly recommend this jack.

by:

Installation was very easy. Just pulled off the old jack and installed the new Phoenix. Wired it up an WOW!! This thing is FAST!! My travel trailer is 36' long. This operates it up and down like it weighs nothing! My old jack quit working 2 months out of warranty and it NEVER operated half as fast as this one. If the durability is as good as the operation this may be the best tongue jack ever! Being able to double click the up or down button for automatic operation is a great idea! If any problems arise I will try to update this review.

  • Recommended Electric Trailer Jack For A 2018 Jayco Whitehawk
Hi Tom, I have two options to replace the electric tongue jack on your Jayco Whitehawk: Option 1: Electric Jack w/ Footplate # EJ-3520-BBX. This jack is going to be your no-frills 'get the job done' style jack. It has a 3,500lb capacity and what it lacks in looks it makes up for in dependability. The simple design of this jack also allows for easier replacement of damaged or worn components unlike a lot of other jacks that require complete replacement when something malfunctions. Option...

  • Mounting Flange Diameter of Phoenix Electric Trailer Jack
Hey Byron, thanks for writing in, and the mounting flange is 5.3" (or 5-5/16") on the Phoenix Electric Trailer Jack # UF38-944040. You made an awesome choice here with the Phoenix as it's as good as it gets for an A-frame jack. The thing cooks in regards to travel (at least relative to trailer jacks), extending 6" in 9-1/2 seconds. I also thought you might want the rest of the dimensions so I went ahead and got ahold of the manufacturer to get all the dimensions of the Phoenix # UF38-944040.

It sounds like you're saying it is hooked up to power but it doesn't have the ability to raise the trailer. This could be the batteries or a problem with the wiring.
