How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

Had been contemplating this purchase/install for a couple of years. Finally bit the bullet. Purchase was simple. Shipping was a day late in arriving, not a real issue, because I live in a rural area. Shipping delays are expected.
Installation was very straight forward, remove three bolts, replace three bolts. That was all there was as far as the mechanical installation. For the electrical portion I elected to splice into the battery power wire that is part of the 7-wire electric cable on the trailer, in lieu of running a dedicated #10 wire direct from the trailer battery.
The jack seems to operate just fine, as anticipated. I have run the jack a number of times over the last few days without issue.
Why not a 5 star review, just haven't owned it long enough nor operated the jack enough. Ask me in 5 years.

by:

Works flawlessly. Maybe the only thing I could complain about is it is slower than I think it could be. Along with the side lights could always be brighter. Works great, install kit is awesome, and it works without a stutter.

by:

This is a great electric jack. I highly recommend this American made jack and Etrailer as your supplier. It’s easier to order from Etrailer than deal with my local trailer shop. I have purchased from these folks several times without any issues.

by:

Does exactly what I brought it for. I really like the ease of lifting the tongue off my vehicle hitch ball especially when the trailer is stubborn to release from the ball. It sure beats hand cranking up and down.

by:

Easy to install. Took about 45 minutes to remove the old jack and replace with this one. Have used it now for about 4 months and, although the motor is a little noisier, it works well and seems to not be straining with my approx. 1000 lb. tongue weight.

by:

Works perfectly. Super easy installati on.

by:

A really great product... makes hook up of my concession trailer much easier.

still going strong after one year!
Ken S - 04/17/2021

by:

Seems rugged enough. I bought it based on a review that said it was still running strong a few years later. I was disappointed in the length of the drop leg and the speed of the jack. It’s really slow.

by:

Absolutely wonderful. I would never have another horse trailer without a Stromberg Carlson Trailer Jack 5000.

by:

I just installed the Trailer Jack. It was an easy install and seems to be working fine. I turned the lights on and they seem kind of dim but it was still daylight and I was in the shade. The hitch was delivered three days after the estimated delivery date, the box was beaten up but the hitch and Styrofoam where in good shape. Would have given 5 stars but for the late shipping.

by:

Easy search for the product, arrived promptly. Easy install, awesome upgrade. Good to go for years to come!!

by:

this isn t the first item ive bought from e trailer ....even had a small issue that was outside their control and they kept on it till it was resolved .....great story AAA+++++

by:

Great jack. Easily lifts 32'camper and rear of F250 for hitch set up. Plenty fast and like the extendable foot.

by:

Exceptional customer service - placing my order online through etrailer.com was easy and efficient.

I was contacted when the order was logged and throughout the shipping process.

Will definitely use this business again

by:

So nice! Awesome buy!

by:

This is the second one of these we have purchased. It is used on a food trailer that is driven to a different spot each day. It never lets us down and handles enormous pressure in all weather.

by:

We really like our electric jack. It is everything we excepted.

by:

Installation was very simple and the unit works great so far. Etrailers pricing is excellent especially during tbese times and shipping was fast. Will definitely order from them again

by:

Great product, arrived on time.

  • Comparing the Stromberg Carlson Trailer Jacks # JET-5000NG VS JET-5000
All-around the Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack # JET-5000NG is nicer than the # JET-5000. The bearings in the part # JET-5000NG allow it to raise and lower much smoother and quicker, the size of the head is a bit smaller and the lighting is nicer too. For how similar the price is between the two the # JET-5000NG really is the winner.

  • Can the Head of the the Stromberg Carlson JET-5000 Be Rotated When Installed
The Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack # JET-5000 uses a 3 bolt mounting flange to attach to an A-frame trailer. If you wanted to rotate the jack on this flange you certainly could, but it would not be at a 90 degree angle since the mounting flange is basically triangle shaped. It would be more like a 120 degree rotate.

  • Would a 3,500 lb Powered Trailer Jack be Adequate for 2007 Forest River Travel Trailer
A 3,500 lb A-frame powered jack is going to be more than plenty for your Forest River travel trailer. The rating for the jack is based on it's lifting strength and your trailer would not have more than 3,500 lbs of tongue weight. That being said, a higher rated 5,000 lb jack like part # JET-5000 is going to allow the trailer to raise and lower quicker as the increased capacity gives it more strength and speed. Choosing a higher capacity like this will also extend the life of the jack...

Going with a powered a-frame jack that has more than enough capacity like the Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Item # JET-5000 will benefit you in that the jack will raise and lower quickly without any strain. The capacity of your your jack is based off of your tongue weight which is 10-15% of your trailer weight. • Electric Trailer Jack Recommendation for 7,400 lb Trailer
The weight rating for trailer jacks is the vertical lifting strength they have. The Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack # JET-5000 is an excellent jack that has a vertical lifting strength of 5,000 lbs. Your trailer would most likely have a tongue weight of 740 to 1,000 lbs so this jack would make easy work of it. I always recommend going much larger on electric jacks to make the lift quick and easier. I attached a review video for this for you to check out as well.

  • Why Would Powered A-Frame Jack Make Buzzing Noise and Stop Operate
The buzzing noise you described is typically the sound a jack will make when it can't draw enough amperage to operate. Are you sure the power source you are using for the jack has adequate amperage to power the jack and isn't a battery nearly dead? Also check to make sure the jack is grounding properly as well. Some ground through mounting bracket and others through a separate wire.

We do not offer an adapter to allow an electric a-frame jack like the Stromberg Carlson # JET-5000 to be installed on a straight pole tongue trailer. It is potentially possible to direct-weld one but this comes at the risk of the heat from welding damaging the jack inner tube. It is just easier and safer to install a new jack that is suited to a straight tongue trailer. The linked page will show you all bolt-on side-mount jacks which are rated from 400- to 2000-lbs. This jack has a lifting capacity of 5,000 lbs which would be more than adequate for a 5,600 lb trailer that would have a tongue weight of around 500-700 lbs most likely. Powered A-frame jacks are rated by the amount they can lift vertically. Your trailer that weighs 10k would have a tongue weight of around 1,000 lbs. A trailer jack like the Stromberg Carlson part # JET-5000 with it's 5,000 lb lifting strength would have no problem lifting a 1,000 lb tongue weight. The dissimilar metals shouldn't be a problem either since this is powder coated, but you could paint your trailer where the jack attaches to seal the aluminum if needed.

  • Fit and Compatibility of Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack on a 10K Car Hauler
You are correct, a trailer jack is only going to be lifting the tongue weight of the trailer. This means that it does not have to have the same or higher capacity as the gross trailer weight. On a trailer weighing in at 10K the tongue weight at 10 to 15 percent would be 1,000 to 1,500lbs. A jack rated for 5,000 pounds, such as Stromberg Carlson # JET-5000, that you have referenced, would have more than enough capacity for the 10K trailer. Our powered A-frame trailer jacks are rated by lifting strength. Your trailer that weighs 10k would have a tongue weight of around 1,000 lbs so this jack would easily work well for it. An A-frame trailer jack such as # JET-5000 is only lifting a portion of the weight of the trailer. So provided that the tongue weight of the trailer is under 5,000 pounds the jack will have no problem lifting it. Based on the specs I found on your 2016 Grey Wolf 22R the tongue weight maximum with the trailer loaded to capacity is 1,076 pounds so that is well within the capacity of the jack.
