Topwind Handle Operation

Crank arm in storage and operating positions

The topwind handle has a grip that swivels as you rotate it to make cranking easier. Pull the handle up and out to release it from the stored position and swing it over the top of the jack to position it for use. Rotate the handle clockwise to extend the jack. Wind the handle counterclockwise to retract the jack. When you're done, flip the handle back over the top and push it down to secure it in the stored position for travel.

Built-In Lock

Key inserted in locking mechanism of RA-29 jack

This jack has a built-in lock that lets you disengage the cranking mechanism so that the jack can't be operated. When you lock the jack, thieves won't be able to lower your trailer to steal it. Lock uses tube-style keys so it's more difficult to pick than most conventional locks.

How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

Video Transcript for RackEm B-52 Round A-Frame Trailer Jack Review

Today we're going to take a look at the Rackem B52 Locking Round A Frame Trailer Jack. This is the top wind design that's going to offer 15 1/ inches of lift, part number is RA-29. Now what is really going to stand out about your B52 from Rackem is that it's a locking jack. What we can do is we are going to extend the jack all the way to its highest position, we press this little cylinder lock after we've lifted up on our top handle and now as you can see this is just going to free spool. The trailer is not going up, it's not going down and there is no way that this could be forced down onto a ball in order to hook up and take it away. It's a really nice way to secure your trailer. Now when you are ready for hook up, we are just gong to turn the cylinder lock and lift up gently on the handle, that's going to allow that to slide out then our handle will go right back down into position and it becomes fully functional again to raise and lower the tongue of our trailer, we can make our hook up connection.

Now the lock itself has a nice heavy duty dust cover that comes with it and it attaches kind of differently than a lot of them. It actually has a groove there that is going to ride in allowing us to kind of rotate it around rather than just like the rubber band that kind of goes over there and can sometimes slip off. That's going to do a great job protecting that from the elements keeping all the moisture out. It's going to last a long time. Of course a little bit of spray lubricant is never a bad idea on a cylinder lock.

It really allows them to last a long time to a good smooth operation. You'll have 2 keys that are going to come with it. You'll have one and then you'll have a backup if you ever need it. But it is a nice heavy duty steel material. They've got a black powder coat finish on it. It's a good sturdy heavy duty jack.

It's got a 5,000 pound lifting capacity. You know they build it solid. Another great feature of disabling the handle here is that going to be when our vehicle sitting out in the parking lot with the trailer connected, nobody is going to be able to walk by and just lower that really without us knowing it. We might ran the risk of dragging off a wheel or plate that we might have put on there or the tube itself. Now from the top of our bracket or our mounting surface to the top of our handle we're going to have about 22 3/8 or 22 1/2 inches right around there. Then from the center of our handle or the center of our jack here to the furthest out location we'll have about 6 1/4 inches.

You just want to make sure you have that room above it if you have any kind of an overhang and you want to make sure that you are going to have that room behind the center, you are going to have plenty of room to maneuver your jack. The top part handle is great for this open style front trailers and as long as you have enough clearance they are good for pretty much any other application. Now for this jack to work for you, you are going to need a hole that is going to be about 2 1/4 inches. Our outside diameter tube here as you can see that measures 2 1/4 outside to outside, you want to a slot large enough for that to go through. Our inside tube is going to measure about 2 inches in diameter. Any accessories you might have as long as they are 2 inch it should work fine. If not you may need to a few replacements which you can find on our website. Now for the mounting locations here on the top, we've got slightly oblong poles. The trailer today that we are using has a hole to hole center of 3 inches. I think it might extend out to 3 1/4 with those oblong holes allowing you to expand that out slightly. That's going to be about your minimum and maximum for sure. Now with the jack in its lowest position, from the ground to the top of our bracket we're going to have about 8 1/4, 8 /38 of an inch right there. Now to kind of get the handle out of the way or get into a stored position it is not just going to bounce up and down and maybe create noise, they've designed 2 little ridges end right here that when rotated over are going to act as like a catch to prevent that from moving around. When we are ready for use we'll just flip it right back over into position and we can crank away. Now that we've seen all the great features of the jack has to offer, let's take a look at how that installs. As you can see we've already removed our existing A frame jack and we've save the hardware. The new jack is just going to slide right down into that hole location, good snug feet there, that is what you are looking for and all we have to do is line up the 3 holes and thread in our bolts. Now let's snug each of them up and be sure to tighten them down so our jack will be nice and secure and steady. Now that we've seen the great features of this jack and how easy it is to install, that's going to complete today's look at the Rackem B52 Top Wind Jack, part number RA-29. .

This locking jack helps prevent theft of A-frame trailers. Bracket height is 24" extended, 8-1/2" retracted. 23-3/8" Clearance with handle. Outer tube diameter is 2-1/4". Bolt-on or weld-on installation. Foot sold separately.

Very nice quality product, heavier than the original jack that came on my utility trailer. But I primarily bought it for its unique locking functionality. Hopefully it will discourage theft unless one has a tall hitch. I also put in longer mount bolts and multi-nutted the extended length bolts inside the trailer jack mounting plate area along with the Baylock hitch ball lock and finally dual wheel locks. The customer support was excellent. Here is a picture of hitch area cloaked for protection from theft and weather. The cover is cut from 26ga material, the 5 gallon inverted pail covers a plant bot with its bottom cut out. Fortunately the trailer is not used frequently.

- RA-29

Very easy to install. Works great, but it's new and it's suppose to. Hopefully the lock is really weather resistant. Love the extra security idea.

- RA-29

Strike 1 Made in China. Strike 2 inner tube is not 2" as stated it is 1-15/16 just enough that my new USA ajustable foot will not fit inside. Strike 3 packing tape used will not come off of the chrome (S/S ?) top looks like crap. not happy but had to have. Would not buy agin.

The 2 inch diameter mentioned is the outside dimension of the innermost tube, not the inside dimension.

Ask the Experts about this Rackem Trailer Jack

  • Caster Wheel for Jack on 6 x 12 Enclosed Trailer
You can add a caster wheel like # JC-101 to the Rack'Em B-52 Round A-Frame Trailer Jack # RA-29 but doing so will reduce the jack's tongue weight (TW) capacity because all caster wheels are rated for less weight than standard foot plates. The jack itself is rated for 5000-lbs but all caster wheels are rated for less weight, generally no more than 1500-lbs as with wheel # BDCP555. If you have a tongue weight scale like # 5780 you can measure the loaded trailer to confirm what its actual...

  • Recommendation for Locking Side Mounted Trailer Jack and Further Securing Trailer
I am not aware of any locking device for a trailer jack keeping it from raising or lowering. Thinking outside the box, you could wrap the handle in place using a lock like # 107KADSPT which would remove the option of raising or lowering the jack with that handle. You can lock the jack from swiveling up or down without much issue. You simply utilize the pin hole locations that aren't being used at the time and run a lock through it. For instance the Bulldog Round, Bolt-Thru Swivel...

  • Distance from Mounting Plate to Jack Handle on RackEm B-52 Round A-Frame Trailer Jack # RA-29
On the Rack'Em B-52 Round A-Frame Trailer Jack # RA-29 the distance from the mounting bracket to the top of the jack is 16-5/8-inches. This and other key specs are noted on the linked product page for this 5000-lb rated jack. A video on the jack is also linked for you.

  • Jack With Short Retracted Height for Horse Trailer
The # TJA-5000-B jack has a 10-3/8" retracted height without a footplate so for a 5,000 lb jack with less retracted height, a great option is the Rack'em B-52 Round A-Frame Trailer Jack # RA-29. This jack has just an 8-1/2" retracted height and if you add the Bulldog Detachable Footplate # BD018564 you will be adding less than half an inch to that. If you needed even less height you would need to get a jack that does not have as much lift capacity. The lift capacity only needs to...

  • Can Handle be Moved to Opposite Side of Bulldog 5K A-Frame Trailer Jack
Bulldog trailer jack # BD1700100317 was not specifically designed to move the handle to the opposite side but you technically could do that. Another option is to use a top wind jack so that the handle doesn't get in the way of anything forward of the jack (assuming you leave the handle pointed away from a possible obstruction). For a top wind 5K A-frame jack with the same bracket height and lift you can use # RA-29. This jack also has a lock to prevent anyone from raising/lowering the...
