Most boat trailer jacks are designed so that you can stow them parallel to your tongue when you're towing. But what if you have accessories (for example, a tool box) that severely limit how much space you have to work with along your trailer frame?
This Dutton-Lainson jack works around that problem by retracting further up so it doesn't have to swing up out of the way to give you the clearance you need. That being said, the overall bracket height on this jack (distance from the top of your trailer tongue to the bottom of the wheel) is still 10", so double check your ground clearance to make sure that the wheel won't be dragging on the ground while you're towing.
The simple truth is that salt can be highly corrosive to metal when exposure lasts for an extended period of time. So, the more you tow around it, the more you need to protect your trailer from it.
The TUFFPLATE finish on this jack helps to ensure that it doesn't end up looking like the one pictured above. TUFFPLATE offers 3 layers of corrosion protection. The first layer is a specially formulated zinc finish. The second layer is chromate. Finally, a sealer puts a third barrier between the jack's gleaming good looks and anything that can contribute to rust, like freshwater or even saltwater exposure.
Rust-resistant coatings are graded according to a salt spray rating. Basically, this rating shows the amount of time it takes for a material to show signs of corrosion when exposed to pure, continuous salt spray. Zinc plating typically begins to deteriorate after about 100 hours. Dacromet usually lasts for around 300 to 400 hours. Dutton-Lainson's TUFFPLATE finish lasted nearly 500 hours in the salt spray test before the first appearance of rust (about 30% longer than a standard powder coat finish). As for the first appearance of white corrosion, it performed about as well as typical zinc finishes.
The environment this test creates is much harsher than anything you'll ever experience in your journeys, but it provides a testament to how well this jack resists rust and corrosion.
A trailer jack lifts your trailer high enough at the tongue to allow you to couple it with your vehicle. Usually, your tongue weight is about 10-15% of your gross trailer weight (GTW). For example, a 10,000-lb trailer has a tongue weight of 1,000 lbs to 1,500 lbs. To raise the tongue of a trailer this size, you'd need a jack that can handle a static load of no less than 1,500 lbs. And, yes, it's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time fishing.

What's up everybody it's AJ with etrailer.com Today we're gonna be checking out this Rigid Mount Marine Jack from Dutton-Lainson. For me, a good addition to your boat trailer. It's an entry-level jack, but still gonna get the job done. It's gonna be able to maneuver the boat around. If you need him walking up to your vehicle on. Of course, raise or lower the trailer to get it onto your vehicle or off of your ball mount.
So let's check it out. Starting off with the handle. You can have a plastic cover on there that spins freely. So that's nice that it's not just stuck in place as you turn the handle. It's really easy to turn, you see I'm gonna go clockwise.
It's gonna raise the boat up and you go counter-clockwise and that's gonna lower the boat down. Now it's really easy to use the handle, works out pretty quick. You see, I'm not going super fast just to get to see it moving and going to casual pace. And it still goes up and down very easily and quickly. Look down at the caster wheel, again it's made out of plastic and maneuvers around very easily.
See no problem on this parking lot. This is kind of a smoother surface, but you can maneuver the boat trailer around just a little bit. That's it just in case you didn't back it up all the way you need to move the boat trailer just a little bit. You can easily pull that with that wheel. If you need to move it back or forth to the side to side, you can do that without having to get it all hooked up, and then just to move it a little bit.
Now it is a six inch diameter down here on the wheel. So just keep that in mind. That's the size of the wheel. And I think just roll around a little bit. It's got a little scuffs on there, but since it's all plastic, I think it's gonna hold up for a long time. As far as the construction goes, it's gonna be a zinc plated construction for the jack. That way, you know, it is a marine jack. So it's gonna be around water. It's not gonna have the elements have any issues. It's not gonna rust or corrode on you very easily. The other thing is it has a weight capacity of a thousand pounds. So just keep that in mind with what kind of trailer you're gonna put on there. And what's on that trailer too. We got it fully extended. And with that, you're gonna get 25 1/2 inches. Now that's also gonna give you 15 inches of travel, and this is what it's gonna look like in its highest point. Another thing to note is that at its highest point, the handle just stops. So you don't have to worry about it coming undone or anything. It stops you and tells you that's as high as you can go. This is what it's gonna look like in its fully retracted state. The only real reason it would be like this is, is if you hook it up to your vehicle, we got on a jack stand right now just to show you what it looks like this this way. And it comes up so much because it's not a swivel Jack. So normally you would have to come them this far. You pull a lever and slide off to the side here, but this one doesn't have that. So you're gonna have to fully retract that, anytime you do hook it up to the vehicle, just so this doesn't drag on the ground and cause any issues. The jack is gonna fit on trailer tongues up to three inches wide to five inches tall. And as far as installation goes, it's just a couple of bolts. Some lock washers and nuts, it's really easy. Check out how we did it. All right now we're gonna do a little bit of pre-assembly here before we get it installed. So what I'm gonna do, is line up our brackets and our bolts. It's gonna go and drop them into the top. 'Cause that's what's gonna rest on top of the trailer tongue. And then to help you see I'm gonna kind of turn it this way and we'll take our brackets, we'll go into the top offset hole. 'Cause that's always going to be the top. Set that in place and now come back, to hold that on and our lock nut, that's our lock washer and our nut. Just get it on there just a little bit just so it won't come back off and we can further adjust and tighten, once we set on our trailer tongue. So we're gonna do that on the other one as well. Lock washer and our nut here. Get those started. Now I can set it on the trailer tongue. It's gonna come back here, just a little bit. I wanna make sure we avoid the wiring right there. Have those lined up, this seat just like that. So we're gonna come back here on the bottom side and line up our next bolts. Now we're ready to go ahead and install our last bolt. You see, I already did it on this side just to help hold it so I can have both hands to show you how to do it. You see how it's a little offset right here. All you gotta do is push down on that bracket to help line it up. And depending on your trailer tongue, how thick it is, is what holes you're gonna use. It looks like we can use the holes right here, right underneath the tongue. So let's bring our bolt through. Looks like it goes right through there. That's a nice fit and come back and just like we did before, put our lock washer and our nut. And we're gonna come back and tighten them all down. Now I'm not gonna tighten it down all the way. Kinda jump around to different bolts and try and tighten them as evenly as I can. So it's got a wrench on this side and the impact gun on this side. Bring it in, so you don't wanna do all the way on the one. So we're gonna go and jump around. Now we're gonna lower our wheel and then you just turn the handle clockwise and that's gonna lower that, which raises up your trailer. It goes pretty fast too. You don't have to do too many turns. It's like, you know some of the jacks, you have to turn quite a bit just to get a little bit of movement, but it seems like it works pretty fast. It didn't take us that long. Now that's off of the jack stand. I just move this off to the side. Overall this is a great jack, it's definitely gonna get the job done. I would recommend, my personal preference though is I like swivel jacks. So they're gonna be pretty much the same as this, except you will be able to pull a pin and slide this up. So what that means for you is when you're going to lower this down onto your vehicle, let's say you're gonna have to go all the way down. It's a lot like this, so say right here is where it's on that ball mount. On a swivel jack, you can just pull the pin and then fold this up once it's detached to that ball mount, it's gonna save you a bunch of time. Now, if you don't have that on this one, clearly you're gonna have to keep going all the way down. So this wheel comes up to the top and it's not dragging on the ground. You don't want that happening. That just add a bunch of extra time, lot a hand crank in there when you could just swivel it up. So that's my recommendation. Maybe check out one of those. etrailer has one that has the same weight capacity. Works exact same, except it also swivels. So that's that extra feature you're looking for now. Fulton Jacks have a bunch of different jacks too with a bunch of different features on those. That can be a little more premium. So if you wanna look into those and see if any of those options are for you, those are good things to look at as well. Well, I think that does it. Thanks for hanging out, I hope this helps..
