Thoroughly Tested for Safety

This hub-and-drum assembly meets the requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The CSA creates standards, which when complied with ensure a safe and quality product. This assembly underwent extensive testing to measure stopping distances when braking. This assembly has also been tested by QAI for braking performance in a complete automotive setup and under real-world conditions to provide the most realistic scenario for the everyday driver.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for An In-Depth Look at the Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly

Today we're going to take a look at the 12" Galvanized Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly for 5,200 pound to 7,000 pound Axles, with the 8 on 6 1/2" bolt pattern. Now this trailer hub and drum assembly includes everything showing here on the table. Includes the hub and drum assembly itself. The bearing races which we're pre-installed, the outer bearing race right here, and the inner bearing race right in here. It includes the bearings both the inner, outer, a grease seal, a grease cap, and then the 8 lug nuts. Now this is designed to work with both electric and hydraulic breaks.

If you noticed, it has a nice galvanized finish on it for corrosion resistance and usually the galvanized finish is used in a lot of marine applications. This is designed to fit on a 5,200 pound up to 7,000 pound axles. The bolt pattern again is an 8 on 6 1/2" bolt pattern. Now the drum dimension on this is 12" diameter by 2" wide. When they give that spec, what they're telling you is the 12", if you measure the inside to inside is 12" diameter, and then the 2" would be the width of this. If we take a ruler, I'm going to give you the dimension, and we'll put it on the inside to inside.

You can see right at 12". Then same way if you put it on here, you could see right at 2", so 12" by 2" drum dimension. Now on the inner bearing, which is the larger of the two, this is a part number 25580 which is stamped on the bearing itself. It has an inside diameter of 1.750" that would go right into the inner bearing race, just like that. Now the grease seal that has an overall diameter of 3.376" and that would go like that and then tap into place to hold it in into place there. Now the outer bearing that's part number 14125A, has an inside diameter of 1.250".

That would go just like that on to the outer bearing race. The zinc plated grease cap has a flange diameter of 2.722" that would tap right over there to hold that into place. Now, for this video, I'm just showing you where the parts go into the hub and drum assembly. Of course, when you do install these on to your axle you do need to pack the bearings with grease and then install them. Now it also comes with the 8 half inch by 20 size lug nuts.

The lug nuts are used to hold your wheel and tire assembly to the hub and drum. Basically, if you put your assembly up on here over the studs, take your half inch lug nuts, go ahead and put them on. Then just torque them down to specs for your application. That should do it for the review of the 12" Galvanized Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly for 5,200 pound to 7,000 pound Axles, with the 8 on 6 1/2" bolt pattern.

  • How To Convert from Surge to Electric Brakes On Boat Trailer with 7K Axles
In order to convert a boat trailer from hydraulic brakes to electric brakes you actually don't need a whole lot and this is a very popular, growing trend for boat trailers nowadays. If you have drum brakes now which are most popular then you can reuse the hub/drum and just obtain new braking assemblies based on the axle capacity, the Electric Trailer Brake Kit part # AKEBRK-7-SA is a fit for 5,200 lb - 7,000 lb axles. If you have disc brakes, you'll also need the Trailer Hub and Drum part...
