Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • What Dexter Brakes and Nev-R Lube Drums do I Need for My 2019 Airstream with Dexter Axle 410980-02?
Hello Doug, Thank you for the axle tag picture, it is most helpful! And I appreciate your patience while I waited for a response from Dexter. For the brakes you will want the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brakes - 12" - Left/Right Hand Assemblies - 6K # 23-458-459. For the Nev-R-Lube Drums you want the Trailer Hub & Drum Assembly - 6,000 lbs Axles - 6 on 5-1/2 - Nev-R-Lube # 8-388-80UC3. Getting things all geared up for an upcoming adventure? If so, where are you headed?

  • Which Electric Drum Brakes for Dexter Nev-R-Lube Axle 410980-02 Hub 8-388
I sent this to Dexter and this is what they sent back: I checked the number and it not a good hub number, and wheel tried pulls up 3,500 sprung axle from 2006 that doesn’t use a Nev-R-Lube hub. I would ask for confirmation on the number or some pictures of the product to confirm replacement parts that will work. If you can get me the info on your hub I can go from there. Look for a number on the outside of the drum.

  • When To Replace Your Brake And Hub/Drum Assemblies And How To Handle Discoloration On The Spindle
Hi Julie, UC3 is added on to this part number because we offer parts with the same part numbers from multiple manufacturers so a code or extra numbers get added on to differentiate the parts. If you scroll down on the # 8-388-80UC3 page you'll see the manufacturer's part number (pictured below) after the item description. Dexter recommends replacing the brake assembly when the pads get down to 1/16" (.0625") in order to prevent damage to the hub or failure of the brake assembly. They...

  • Replacement Hub for Dexter 5200 lb Axle with Nev-R-Lube Bearings
There is no difference between these parts the 8-388-30 is simply Dexter's updated part number for the # 8-388-80UC3. The part will work on Dexter Nev-R-Lube Axles that are 6,000 lb capacity and will give you a 6 on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern. This is the same assembly used on 5200 lb axles as well.

  • Replacement Hubs And Electric Drum Brakes For A 2011 Airstream Flying Cloud 27FB
Hey Tito, From what I can find the Trailer Hub & Drum Assembly # 8-388-80UC3 and Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brakes # 23-458-459 do appear to be the correct fit but you'll want to first verify the wheel bolt pattern and axle capacity to 100% confirm.

  • What Brake Replacements Do You Recommend for My Dexter 5200 Pound Axles?
For a great option of Nev-R-Adjust brakes on your 1999 Jayco Designed 5th-wheel trailer, I recommend the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Assembly - 12" - Right Hand # 23-459 along with the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Assembly - 12" - Left Hand # 23-458. Both of these brakes have a 6,000-pound capacity and will have enough weight capacity for your 5200 pound axles. If you need the hub-and-drum assembly along with the brakes, the ones you need depend on the lug...

  • Replacement 6k Trailer Brake Hub that Uses Nev-R-Lube Bearings
For a 6,000 lb axle we have the trailer hub part # 8-388-80UC3 which has Nev-R-Lube bearings in it. This is designed for a 12 inch brake assembly as well. This is also a Dexter brand hub which is widely considered to be a nicer quality hub than Axle Tek.

  • Can EZ Lube Hub be Replaced with Dexter Nev-R-Lube Hub without Replacing Axle
Dexter Nev-R-Lube hubs such as the part # 8-388-80UC3 are designed to fit Dexter Nev-R-Lube Axles. These hubs use a special cartridge style bearing that is only compatible with the spindles on a Nev-R-Lube Axle. With this in mind you would not be able to change from an EZ Lube hub to a Nev-R-Lube model without replacing the entire axle. If you are needing to replace the hubs on your trailer I will be happy to recommend a hub and drum assembly that will work well. Please just let me know...

  • Do You Grease Inside Of Dexter Nev-R-Lube Hub Or On The Spindle Before Installing The Hub?
The Trailer Hub & Drum Assembly # 8-388-80UC3 you were looking at is designed specifically for 42mm Dexter Nev-R-Lube axles and you do not grease any of the components. This hub has sealed bearing cartridges which do not get greased. Now if you were installing a standard hub with normal bearings then yes, you would pack the bearings with grease, and grease the spindle before installing the hub. I included a video review of the # 8-388-80UC3 for you to take a look at.

  • Replacement Hub/Drum and Brake Assemblies for Dexter Nev-R-Lube 5,200 lb Axle
Your Dexter Nev-R-Lube 5,200 lb axles use a 42 mm bearing cartridge that has a 6 on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern. The correct replacement kit you would need that has the hub/drums with bearings pre-installed is the part # 8-388-80UC3. You would not be able to go to an EZ lube type since you have a Nev R Lube spindle setup. This is a much better setup anyway. For a right hand brake assembly you would need the part # AKEBRK-7R-SA and for left # AKEBRK-7L-SA.

  • What is the Torque Spec of the Spindle Nut on a Dexter E-Z Lube Axle
In order to remove the hub/drum on your trailer you will want to first remove the spindle nut. Once the spindle nut is removed you are going to want to take a hammer and tap the outer portion of the drum as well as the hub face a few times to break loose an rust/dirt. You should then be able to pull the drum off. Once the drum is off you can wipe down the spindle and then spray the braking assemblies with brake cleaner. You can then install the drum and spindle nut. The spindle nut will...

  • Needing a Never Lube Bearing for Dexter 6000 Lbs Trailer Axle
    The Redline Bearing # 31-73-3 is a cartridge style Never-Lube bearing that fits 42mm Dexter Never-Lube axle with 6 lug on 5-1/2 inch hubs with 3,000 lbs capacity like # 8-388-80UC3. This bearing complete dimension are 42mm I.D. x 76mm O.D. x 39mm wide.

  • Replacement Hub and Bearing for Dexter Nev-R-Lube Axles
Normally you would go by the bearing numbers stamped into the sides of the bearing. If you do not have those bearings though then the spindle will have to be measured. Since you have Nev-R-Lube axles though there are not that many options. If the spindle is 50mm in diameter then # 8-385-81SP or # 8-385-82UC3 would be correct. If the spindle is 42 millimeters then you would need # 8-388-80UC3 which has a 6 on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern.

  • Recommended 235/85R16 Tires on 5th Wheel Trailer with Weight Capacity Rated Above Tire/Axle Capacity
Your Pilgrim International Open Road 357RLDS definitely has tires needing replaced. It is not uncommon to use LT tires on trailers, but it sounds like they have some dry rot going on. The stamp on the wheel rim unfortunately is not anything I'm familiar with so I can't help with that, but I can tell you that most trailers use a zero offset meaning that the mounting surface of the wheel to the hub is in the direct middle of the tire. The triangular or circular cutouts in the wheel are...

  • How Often Should Trailer Hubs/Spindles/Bearings be Greased
It may not be a bad idea just to do a quick visual inspection of your hubs every 3,000 miles (or after a long road trip) but you really don't need to add grease to the bearings until you either reach 12,000 miles or 12 months (granted they are in good working order). When you do add grease at the 12,000 mile or 12 month mark you will want to use the exact same grease that is already being used for your bearings. Some greases are not compatible with each other and will actually cause all...

  • How To Install the Spindle Nut on a 12,000 Pound Dexter Axle
I spoke to Dexter and they said there is a bit of a process for installing the spindle nut properly. 1. You will need to thread on the inner nut, rotate the hub, then tighten the nut to 100 foot pounds. 2. Loosen the nut to remove the torque, making sure not to rotate the hub. 3. Hand tighten the nut, then back it off 1/4 to 3/8 of a turn 4. Place the tang washer on the spindle and bend two tangs inward over the nut, This will keep the inner nut from turning while torqueing down the outer...

Not a stupid question at all. The Dexter Trailer Hub & Drum Assembly, part # 8-388-80UC3 is sold individually. The self adjusting brakes need an initial adjustment when you install them and then the self-adjusting will kick in. If you have already done the initial adjustment, the 5 mile trip should allow your brakes to work properly. If the brakes are not working properly, it may be a sign that your drums assemblies are worn down or it may just mean you need to adjust your electric brake controller settings. If you want to ensure you have working bearings, seals, and hubs, I recommend the Trailer...
