Note: Trailer wheels that are smaller than 15" and have 5 bolts, have a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

I ordered a set of hubs for my trailer. The package came quickly however, one of the seals was incorrect. I called etrailer and they sent a new seal out… It arrived in two days! Awesome service.

by:

Parts do fit my boat axle.

I’m restoring and upgrading a 1980’s Dilly motorcycle trailer to make a 2800 mile road trip. The Dexter hubs with new bearings and races was a no brainer. More importantly Etrailer and their stellar customer service made this project so much easier to complete.

by:

After ordering from parts houses and getting expensive wrong grease seals, for my boat trailer, I found a websit e trailer, I called and talked to Jennifer, she knew what I needed right away, I ordered a hub with races, bearings, grease seals and lug nuts. Jennifer placed the order for me and with end two hours I was notified by email that my order was shipped. The third day my order was delivered to my door. No damage, was packaged very good. And was right parts. I will be using etrailer again. I recommend this co to my friends.

20/20 hindsight tells me I made a bad decision when I got a 20% discount on a display model utility trailer from a large "big box" hardware store here in the Seattle area. Many of the parts were assembled incorrectly, some of the hardware was missing, and they'd adjusted the wheel bearings too tightly which ended up frying one of them and the associated bearing races just during the trip home. The bearing races were integral with the hubs and weren't servicable, so the hub was ruined. And, unfortunately, I didn't end up using the trailer for quite a while and didn't notice all this until after well the warranty had expired.

The trailer was manufactured by a Canadian company and they claimed that, due to US regulatory restrictions, they were currently unable to ship bearings or hubs to the United States. So much for our friends to the north.

Fortunately, the trailer axle was American made, and etrailer.com was able to provide me with everything I needed to make the trailer roadworthy; with higher quality parts and at less cost. And the hubs had lugs, as opposed to the originals with just threaded holes; which makes installing the wheels much easier.

What can I say? I'm now a fan of etrailer.com.

This product arrived quickly and fit well. It is of equivalent or better quality than the original hub and bearings on my Snowbear trailer, which had rusted rather badly. I like having studs and lug nuts instead of lug bolts. I also like having it ungreased so I can know what kind of grease I am putting in and not worry about compatibility (lithium vs. calcium, etc.). My only beef is that it should come with a new cotter pin and ideally, a new castle nut to truly be complete.

Thanks to etrailer for listing enough dimensions that I could pick out the correct hub, since the originals had no numbers on them.

by:

You guys are the best! Excellent service and I couldn't be happier! Thank you!

by:

Good quality hub, good price, fast shipping. Came with lugs, all bearings, inner races installed, and a double lip marine type grease seal as well as a basic grease cap. The only thing I needed to provide was a cotter pin!

by:

First of all my Customer Rep Julie H, Was very helpful and gave accurate information. A real pleasure working with her. The Hub fit as design and came to me clean and ready to go. I used this hub to retro fit a older trailer, 1960 ish. The original wheels also housed the bearing.
I would recommend this change out
I also went from an 8' wheel to 12"

by:

Great product. Perfect fit and has performed without issue all summer. These were for a boat trailer so I'm dipping them in the water constantly. They just keep asking for more.

Thanks guys. You're a life saver.

by:

Fast shipping everything listed and pictured is here and in good shape. I would have given 5 stars if the kit had come complete with a cotter pin. No fault of Etrailer as it was not in the parts list. I would just like to see a kit as a complete kit. Overall no complaints its a good deal and I hope to put many miles on it.

by:

First of all, I cannot say enough good things about the people who work at etrailer. I spent at least 30 minutes on the phone with them making sure I ordered the correct hub. I recieved it 4 days after I ordered it and it fit perfectly I was able to get it installed in about 15 minutes. Thanks Etrailer!!!

by:

Installed on my 5x8 foot trailer ,it's been towed back and forth from PA. to WI. a few times had no trouble traveling 70 - 75 MPH. 1,200 miles one way

by:

I ordered a hub for my trailer along with another part. The 2nd part was on back order which would have delayed my order. I needed the hub for a trip. George and team were great in revising and expediting my order. Hub arrived on time, good condition, fit perfectly.

by:

Switched from a 4 lug rim to a 5 lug so I could run a larger tire, already had the rims but needed to change hubs. These hubs worker perfectly, they are of good quality and are well worth the price which is very reasonable. Order processing and shipment was very fast. I have no complains at all. Any parts I need in the future will be purchased from etrailer.com. Can't beat the service or product price. I highly recommend this retailer for your needs.

by:

Very happy with everything except for that after wasting a lot of time trying to get the grease caps on and still cannot! No matter what I did would not work so they are now in the trash and I need to buy new ones. That is pretty ridiculous in my opinion. Other then that I’m very satisfied but giving this a 1 because buying the complete unit it should all assemble together without problems.

by:

Trailer hub came with everything needed ; dust cap did not work out - but, used old one !! Same GREAT service and material as always !! A +++

by:

Parts arrived in 2 days & look good. All components are here, bearings, nuts cap etc. Everything looks 100% correct and will see about putting them on tomorrow. I am extremly satisfied with the on-line tech, delivery timing and cost. Thank you guys.
ps: (I put a "plug" in for you on my teardrop trailer sight.)

by:

Exactly what I needed, delivered promptly and at a competitive price point. I especially appreciated the lug pattern template to ensure what I ordered would fit the wheels I had.

by:

Excellent quality hub that fits perfectly. The tutorials and videos on etrailer really assisted me in picking the correct parts for my older trailer.

Excellent communications and customer service from etrailer, too! Thank you!

by:

nuts hards to spin on, black paint already peeling off.....F paint job, packaged very poorly, bolts taped to hub. so when i pulled off tape, off went paint. bearings are rel nice

by:

Just what I needed. these will be used on a trailer that will be pulled by a Jeep Wrangler TJ Sahara.
THANKS GEORGE

by:

Quick Delivery, went together good, except for the Dust Covers. Could not get either of those things on to save my life. Very Thin Gauge Tin. I had another Heavier Gauge set from other hubs, they went on with no problems.

  • Replacement Hub For A Trailer With A BT8 Spindle
For a replacement hub that uses # L44643 bearings with a 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern you'll want the Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly # 8-258BTUC1. This will come as a quantity of one so you'd need two kits to do both sides of the axles. Each kit will come with the bearings, races, seal, grease cap, wheel bolts, and lug nuts included.

I really wish there was a way to determine what bearings a trailer needed without actually pulling the wheel off and checking, but there isn't. The only two solution I have for you would be to remove the hubs and get the numbers that are stamped on the bearing or for you to remove the hubs and use a digital or dial caliper to measure where the bearings and seal ride (see pic). If your current hubs are still useable I recommend just replacing the bearings and sticking with them as that will be the most cost effective, though you will need to use wheels with the 4 bolt pattern. • Idler Hub Assembly for 2,000 lb Axle With 13 Inch Wheels
We do have a solution for you, although the Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly for 2,000-lb Axles # 34822545BX does require wheels be only 8" to 12". The reason for that is there is this hub does not have a large enough flange diameter in order to to provide the necessary side-to-side support for a larger 13" wheel, so it can become loose on the hub. Instead, the hub you need for your 13" wheel is the Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly for 2,000-lb Axles # 8-258BTUC1. This uses the same...

It doesn't necessarily have to do with the axle-to-wheel size as much as it does the hub-to-wheel size. Most, but not all, hubs rated for a 2,000-lb axle are compatible with smaller wheel and usually have an 8" - 12" wheel range. As you found, sometimes that is not always the case. The part # 8-258BTUC1 that you referenced is compatible with 13" - 15" wheels that have a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern.
