Corrosion Resistance for Marine Use

This trailer hub assembly has a zinc coating that resists corrosion, making it ideal for use on your boat or snowmobile trailer. All GAL-DEX hubs undergo a test in which they are sprayed with a 5-percent salt solution to determine corrosion resistance over time. These products are able to withstand 500 hours of constant exposure to the saltwater mist. This 500-hour salt spray rating indicates that a product is not only durable enough to last in freshwater environments, but it can also be used on trailers that come into contact with saltwater.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Hubs and Drums - Hub - 8-258-50UC1 Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to take a look at the Dexter Galvanized Trailer Hub Assembly for 2,200-lb Axles with the 5 on 4 1/2" bolt pattern. Now this is a marine grade trailer hub assembly that will fit idler axles. It includes everything shown here on the table. It includes the hub assembly itself, both inner and outer bearings, the bearing races, which are already pre-installed into the hub, the grease seal, grease cap and the zinc coated lug nuts. Now the finish on this is a GAL-DEX zinc plating, which has a 500 hour salt spray rating. It is ideal for use on boat or snow mobile trailers and it is durable enough for even salt water applications. The application again is for 2,200-lb axles.

The hub flange diameter, which is from this edge to this edge, is 6 1/2" so it is designed to work with anywheres form 13" wheels all the way up to 15" wheels. The bolt pattern is a 5 on 4 1/2" bolt pattern. The wheels studs are 1/2" diameter and the weight capacity on one of these hub assemblies is 1,100-lbs, so when one of these is used on one side and one on the other side it will meet your 2,200-lb axle capacity. The bearings that are included, they include both the inner and outer bearing, and in this application they are actually both the same bearing part number, part number L44649. Has an inner diameter of 1.063 for both the inner and outer bearing. The bearing race, as we mentioned, are already pre-installed.

The grease seal, which is included, is part number 10-9, has an inner diameter of 1.5", outer diameter of 1.987". Comes with the grease cap and it comes with five of the 1/2" by 20 sized lug nuts, part number X1023R. That should do it for the review of the Dexter Galvanized Trailer Hub Assembly for 2,200-lb Axles with the 5 on 4 1/2" bolt pattern.

The "Galvanized" coating wore off in spots during shipping so not sure how well it'll hold up over time. Other wise good quality and perfect fit. 620469

Bearing went out after a few months due to bad seal. Wish I took a pic at the time, but had to fix it as asap with a spare. Customer service responded quickly , but should've provided a discount for an obvious manufacturing defect. Quick shipping 578326

I'm rebuilding an axle on my trailer that I haul my bobcat and tractor on. I found all the parts I needed and they were shipped on time. It saved me a lot of time to have them shipped to my plant. We are in a rural area. I will be using etrailer for all my trailer needs. 439907

As always etrailer had what I needed. I shopped around and no other outlet had exactly what I wanted. Their website is easy to navigate and makes finding the right part a breeze. 713668

Overall I would rate this product as good. My only issue with them is that the hub cap is really thin and cheap. It basically caved-in during installation. I would recommend buying a better set of hub covers if you purchase these hub kits. 526396

Ask the Experts about this Dexter Axle Trailer Hubs and Drums

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hubs and Drum?

  • Correct Hub Assembly for Dexter 8-258 Hub and 13-Inch Wheels
  • With axle 8-258, your bearings are either # L44643 or # L44649. # L44643 bearings have an inner diameter of 1 inch, while bearings # L44649 have an inner diameter of 1.063 inches. You can locate the bearing numbers on the bearings themselves, or you can measure the diameter using the image I've attached. We offer two hub assembly kits with # L44643 bearings. Item # 8-258BTUC1 is the standard hub assembly kit, which includes lug nuts, inner bearings and race, outer bearings and race,...

  • Replacement Hub for 1989 Ranger Trailer
  • Judging by your photo, your trailer would use an idler hub, not a hub drum. Assuming you have 5 lug on 4-1/2 inch bolt circle wheels that use an # L44649 inner and outer wheel bearing, you have a few choices. Rather than the painted hub, I'd recommend going with a galvanized hub for greater corrosion resistance. Dexter hubs are manufactured in the US, which is what I'd recommend. For an 8, 10 or a 12 inch wheel, use # 8-259-50UC1 for a standard spindle or # 8-259-50UC1-EZ for the EZ...

  • Does Grease Cap Included with # 8-258-50UC1-EZ Hub Act Like A Bearing Buddy
  • The # 8-258-50UC1-EZ Idler Hub Assembly you referenced includes the grease cap for an EZ Lube spindle. An EZ Lube spindle has a zerk fitting in the end of it so grease can quickly and easily be added to the hub. The rubber plug in the center of the grease cap is removable to allow access to the grease zerk. This particular hub can be used if you have a standard spindle with no grease zerk, but a standard hub is available as part # 8-258-50UC1. This hub includes a standard grease cap. Bearing...

  • Choosing Between Painted or GAL-DEX Coated Version of Dexter Trailer Hub
  • The GAL-DEX coated version of the hub you referenced is part # 8-258-50UC1. There is a very small price differential between the painted and the GAL-DEX version. The GAL-DEX coating can withstand a continuous 500 hour exposure to salt spray before corrosion sets in. In my opinion, the extra corrosion protection is well worth the small increase in price.

  • Trailer Hub that Fits 1 inch or 1-1/6 inch Diameter Spindle
  • We have hubs that are designed to fit spindle diameters that you mentioned of 1 inch and 1-1/6 inch. If you have a straight spindle with a 1 inch diameter you'd have a BT8 spindle and the hub part # 8-258BTUC1 that you referenced would fit. If you have a spindle with a straight diameter of 1-1/6 inch then you'd have a BTR spindle and would want a # 8-258-50UC1. The diameter of the spindle where the seal would ride on either would be 1.25 inch. If you can verify your spindle dimensions...

  • Selecting Replacement Hubs for 1963 Travel Trailer
  • Thank you for the information from your vintage travel trailer's existing hub assembly. This is likely a casting number and will not give us what we need to find you correct replacement hubs, but it is not hard to determine correct new hubs. You will definitely want to replace both hubs. Things you need to match up are the hub bolt pattern, the axle weight rating and the bearing numbers. • Trailer Hubs for a 2500 Pound Axle
  • It sounds like you might have a BTR spindle such as # R104BTREZ as an example. It takes bearing L44649 for the inner and outer bearing. We have a couple of hubs that you could use. As a bonus they are pre-greased and ready to go! We have # CE13109 with a 4 on 4 bolt pattern. And we have # CE13311 for a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. These are the only option rated high enough for a 2500 pound axle. There are no galvanized options at that weight capacity. There are some in the 2200 pound...

  • New Grease Seal Leaked After Installation of Bearing Buddies with Hub Kit # 8-248-50UC1
  • Thank you for your recent purchase from etrailer. The grease seal included with this hub kit has an inner diameter of 1.500-inches and an outer diameter of 1.987-inches. This seal should be fully seated into the rear bore of the hub so that it is flush with the back hub surface. The grease seal leak you experienced could come from the seal not being fully seated into the hub, or it could, as you noted, be a result of the over-filling of your Bearing Buddies. If this hub does not have...

  • How to Measure a Spindle to Determine the Bearing Numbers to Find the Correct Replacement Hubs
  • To find replacement hubs you'll need to measure your spindles where the inner and outer bearings sit using a digital caliper like # PTW80157. In the picture I've attached the locations are C and D. You may also be able to determine the bearings you have based on the bearing numbers stamped into them if you still have the bearings and can read the numbers.

If you require a seal with a different diameter you can simply order this as a separate item since the kits are pre-packed. • Which Hub with Bearings L44649 Can work with Trailer Brakes
  • While the idler hub part # 8-258-50UC1 will fit on your axle it can't be used with brakes as it does not have a drum attached to it. So instead you'd want the # 8-257-5UC3 which is the version of this hub that has a brake drum attached to it. For brake assemblies you'd then need the part # 23-47 for the left hand side and part # 23-48 for the right hand side. I also attached a link to a help article that covers adding brakes to a trailer for you to check out as well.
