Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Hubs and Drums - Hub - 8-91-05UC1 Review

Today we're going to take a quick look at the Dexter Axle Trailer Hub Assembly part number 8-91-05uc1. This idler hub is designed to fit 2,000 pound axles. It's got a 4 on 4 bolt pattern. If we're able to measure from the center of one lug, or one bolt, to the center of the other we get a measurement of 4 inches. Now included with the idler hub are the races, which are already pressed in inside the hub where they need to be. You'll also find the inner and outer bearings, in this case they're both number L44649; a grease seal, in this case it's 10-9; a grease cap that will go on the outside; and you'll also find the four conical lug nuts to go with our studs.

Now each of these idler hubs has a capacity itself of 1,250 pounds. When you pair it with the other you get a total of 2,500 which puts us at the range for a 2,000 pound axle. And that's it for a quick look at the Dexter Axle Trailer Hub Assembly part number 8-91-05uc1.

The new hub is an exact fit of what we have on this trailer. We are hoping to have it back on the road soon. Thanks again. 645209

My trailer had different sized hub which had me confused when trying to replace the bearings. The new hub fit and worked great and now it matches the other side. 635361

The hubs and bearing fit my seadoo trailer great. The reason for one star down is that the grease seals were the wrong diameter to seal on my axle and seeing as how this was a Saturday and I was 125 miles from home (trying to get this trailer road ready) I had to buy seals from a local auto parts store at $8.00 each (prices suck when your out in the country without many choices). Overall very pleased with the service and products. I would definitely visit etrailer again for my trailer needs. 614907

absolutely no problems with your product, the hubs work just as advertised. Thank you for your excellent products. Take care 528863

Should have gone right to etrailer right out of the gate vs. messing around with local auto part stores. Rebuilding a small utility trailer and had a hell of a time locating the correct hub/bearing assembly. After returning what I was told would fit at both [local store 1] & [local store 2], I placed an order off etrailer. The package was at my house in rual Maine in 3 days and fit perfectly. Lesson learned, go right to etrailer for your needs. They clearly know what they are doing. 511304

Good product, only thing keeping it from a 5 star review is that one hub has just a hair too much clearance for the O-ring, yes I've tried multiple different rings, that allows a small bit of grease to ooze out. The opposite hub has no such issue. Other than that can't beat it for the money. 407355

My trailer bearings were completely shot. I ordered the new hubs and received them I four days. I had to wait for the weather to warm up. I finally replaced both bearings in less than a hour. 355141

I recently purchased a set of hubs and bearings for my Jon Boat trailer. I purchased 4 on 4 hubs to put 4.80 X 12" tires on the trailer. Delivery was very fast. I received the hubs in two days. However, the hubs and bearings I purchased would not fit the trailer axle. I contacted etrailer.com and explained that the internal diameter of the bearings was much too small. The ID was 1" and the spindle of the axle was 1.25". They checked their inventory and could not find bearings with 1.25" ID. They agreed to allow me to return the hubs and bearings. However, after considerable looking I found that the axle is non-standard for this type of trailer and no one has hubs (4 on 4 for 4.80 X 12" tires) to fit the axle. I ended up purchasing a proper axle and installed the hubs I had purchased from etrailer.com. The people at etrailer.com were very considerate and helpful. I recommend them highly. 349423

I'm modifying an old boat trailer to transport my HD Fat Boy. The price of e-Trailer's wheel hubs was so reasonable, I opted to replace my old ones. I was in no real hurry to receive them but the new hubs arrived promptly anyway and they were just as represented in the catalog. Upon installation, I sensed the need for a special washer between the outer bearing and the hub nut. Calling the 800 number, I received a prompt and detailed explanation. I couldn't be more pleased, because these folks really focus on customer satisfaction. Pap. 342021

Many of my old garden tractors came with 8" rims and sealed wheel bearings, these bearings and small tires on a 1000 lb machine made steering hard and wore out bearings. I am in the process of converting many of them to 4 bolt hubs like this cast iron Dexter hub. They make steering with two fingers possible, great product for a upgrade on an old garden tractor, especially if you are going to add a loader or front plow 238683

really fast shipping, item exactly as described. packing of kit items left a little to be desired (all parts all wound up and secured in clear packing tape). good price. 237554

The parts were good, they just did not fit the axel I need them to. Customer service was good although I was told that the hubs would fit they did not. Not sure we're to go from here, new axel or get hubs machined. I do have an old boat axel that has goofy sizes. 231159

- 8-91-05UC1
by:

Service and delivery great but the grease cap would not go on without filing the entire outer rim. Even then I had to beat the crap out of it with a mallet to get it on. It's disappointing that such a simple part cannot be manufactured to fit properly. All that said, I don't hold it against you folks and will likely order from you again in the future 229158

- 8-91-05UC1

The hub seemed to be of very good quality. It shipped out and I received it very quickly. I have only one issue and that was the grease cap seemed a tad small and was extremely difficult to put on without damaging, but in all fairness that could be my lack of experience installing them rather than a product issue. before an after pictures attached 228448

Ask the Experts about this Dexter Axle Trailer Hubs and Drums
Do you have a question about this Trailer Hubs and Drum?

  • How to Tell if Trailer has a BT8 or BTR Spindle Installed
  • A BT8 spindle would have a diameter of .99 of an inch where the bearings would both install and would have a diameter of 1.24 where the great seal would ride. That would require a hub part # 8-91-05UC1 for an idler hub. A BTR spindle would have dimensions of 1.06 inch for outer and inner bearing plus 1.50 inch where grease seal would install. That would require an idler hub part # AKIHUB-545-2-G-2K.

  • We have a hub that will fit your 1996 Jayco popup trailer. The Dexter Trailer Hub assembly, # 8-91-05UC1-EZ, that you referenced will work on your trailer axle. This hub uses the # L44649 bearings and has a 4 bolt lugs. Measuring the current hubs bolt pattern will tell you for sure if this hub will work for you. I have attached an article that will explain how to find what your wheel bolt pattern is on your current hub. If you do not have grease zerks at the end your axle spindles,...

Please note that the seals which come with these have an inner diameter of 1.500" so you will need to use part # 34823 for a grease seal instead as...

  • Replacement for Dexter 8-91A Hub
  • I did some research and there is no direct replacement for your hub due to how old it is. So in order to find the correct replacement, you will need to know the bearing numbers of your current hub because the information you gave is irrelevant. If you are unable to find them, you would need to use a digital caliper such as # PTW80157 and measure your spindle to the thousandths of an inch where the bearings ride. You can use the photo I've attached to see exactly where you need to measure. There...

The part # 8-91-05UC1 SHOULD be an exact replacement. However we need to double check your grease seal measurement. Double check to make sure you don't have a 1.5 inner diameter seal with outer diameter of 1.9. You can also measure the spindle where the seal rides as well. The seal dimensions you mentioned are not...

  • Correct Replacement Hub for a Trailer with Dexter L44649 Bearings
  • In order to determine which is the correct hub for your trailer you will need to take some measurements of the spindle using dial or digital calipers for the most accurate measurement. I have included a picture that shows what measurements are needed. The difference between bearing L44649 and L44643 is only 0.063 inches but for bearings, it is critical to get the correct size. This is also why you cannot measure using a ruler or tape measure. It has to be dial or digital calipers.

  • Recommended Replacement Hub for Dexter 8-91A
  • I reached out to my contact at Dexter regarding the numbers you gave. They couldn't match anything and suggested that you most likely have a 8-91A, which is a 4 on 4 bolt pattern. That is a very basic trailer hub assembly and the replacement part is # 8-91-05UC1. This assembly comes with the L44643 bearings, the grease seal, the lugs and the grease cap. I'd suggest a bearing packer like # PTW1218 and the Industrial Strength Grease # L11390.

  • The expert answer you have referenced is correct. A wheel that secures to the hub using bolts instead of lug nuts actually centers on the hub so the pilot hole of the wheel has to be exact. Hub # 8-91-05UC1 has a center bore outer diameter of approximately 2.4375 inches; very close to 2.5 inches but not quite.
