Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Meaning of 8 on 6-1/2 Inch Bolt Pattern for Dexter Hub # 8-285-11
The 8 on 6-1/2 inch description that you see for the Dexter Trailer Hub # 8-285-11 refers to its bolt pattern. It is important to note this feature when replacing your hubs because it needs to match the pattern on your existing wheels for the wheels to mount properly. If you are unsure what bolt pattern is on your current hubs or wheels you will just need to take a quick measurement to determine this. For a wheel or hub with 8 bolts, you will simply measure from the center of one bole...

  • How do Trailer Studs Get Replaced on Trailer Hubs
Most are press in studs on trailer hubs. You'll need to hammer out the old ones by hammering directly on the top of the studs until they back out the backside and then hammer in the new ones through the same holes. I attached a link to a page that has all of the drive in studs we offer.

  • Can 7.2k Axle Trailer Hub Be Replaced with 8k Trailer Axle Hub

  • How to Tell if Trailer Hub 8-258 Will Fit Spindle
We do have the Dexter trailer hub and drum part # 8-285-9UC3 which might work but you would need to verify a few things. This is an 8k oil-bath hub with a bolt pattern of 8 on 6-1/2 inches. The bearings it takes are 25580 Inner / 02475 Outer. You would need to pull the hubs you have to get the bearing numbers or the dimensions where the bearings ride. If those dimensions are 1.74 inch and 1.25 inch this hub would fit.
