Corrosion Resistance for Marine Use

This trailer hub-and-drum assembly has a zinc coating that resists corrosion, making it ideal for use on your boat or snowmobile trailer. All GAL-DEX hubs and drums undergo a test in which they are sprayed with a 5-percent salt solution to determine corrosion resistance over time. These products are able to withstand 500 hours of constant exposure to the saltwater mist. This 500-hour salt spray rating indicates that a product is not only durable enough to last in freshwater environments, but it can also be used on trailers that come into contact with saltwater.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Hubs and Drums - Hub with Integrated Drum - 8-247-50UC3 Review

Rate your transcript OrderClientKevin BrossRef #20704Order #TC0356093255 Today we're going to review part number 8-247-5OUC3. This is the Dexter 10 inch trailer hub and drum assembly for 3500 pound axles. Has the 5 on 4 and a half inch bolt pattern. This one has a Galdex finish. Now, this Galdex finish assembly is corrosion resistant and it's great for marine use. This is designed to fit 3500 pound axles with drum brakes.

Now, this part number will include everything shown here. Includes the one hub and drum, includes the inner and outer bearings. Now, the bearing races are included. They are pre-installed into the drum themselves. Includes the double lipped grease seal.

Includes this grease cap and then the lug nuts. Now, all of the Galdex hubs and drums will undergo a test in which they are sprayed with a 5% salt solution. This will help determine the corrosion resistance, over time. These products are able to withstand 500 hours of constant exposure to the salt water mist. Now, this 500 hour salt spray rating will indicate that the product is not only durable enough to last in fresh water environments, but it can also be used on trailers that come in contact with salt water. These are ideal for use on a boar or a snowmobile trailer. A few specs on this again.

The application is 3500 pound axles with the number 84 spindles. This does work with the 10 inch by 2 and a quarter inch electric and hydraulic brake assemblies. The bolt pattern again is 5 on 4 and a half inches. The wheel studs are a half inch diameter. Now, the weight capacity on one of these is 1750 pounds.

When one of these is used with one on the other side, that will get you your 3500 pound weight capacity. Now, the dimensions on this drum. You got a diameter. It's going to be 10 inches and the width of it is going to be 2 and a quarter inches. Now the bearing that are included, everything shown here. The inner bearing is part number L68149. That would go in the inside right there. The outer bearing, which is L44649, go right in there onto the race. The grease seal, which is 58846, it goes on the very back after your bearing's installed. Then your grease cap, then the 5 half inch by 20 lug nuts, that we'll be using. That would be used once you put your tire and wheel on. The lug nuts would hold your tire and wheel assembly to this hub and drum. That should do it for the review of part number 8-247-5OUC3, the Dexter 10 inch trailer hub and drum assembly for 3500 pound axles, the 5 on 4 and a half inch bolt pattern in the Galdex finish. .

I'm just getting around to installing my drums, thanks for promptly getting them to me, they look great! I'm wondering if this product has the free backing feature or if I need to manually lock out the brakes when backing up. Any information is appreciated. 577181

Stripping down a 16 year old 21 ft. salt water use trailer - from end to end. The folks @ etrailer were very knowledgeable, and helpful in my decision making. From placing the order, to tracking the order, to the way the items were packed for transit. Other distributors could learn from these people; in regards to customer service, following up, both office and warehouse. Unloaded the products last night, nothing short, all quality in regards to their products, with great pricing. The installation videos are a big bonus, and something I'll be taking advantage of, during the restoration. Will follow up with picture, (before and after) when I'm done 335932

We had a break down on Saturday when we picked our boat up from storage. Went online and ordered the necessary parts to repair the trailer and forgot about it for a couple hours. Etrailer called to notify us that the selected parts would not arrive as hoped based on the shipping I had chosen. They went out of their way to locate the suitable parts and verify that they would arrive by the time I needed them so we could get the trailer repaired and back on the road. Thank you Etrailer for the excellent customer service!!! I look forward to my next order with you! 250721

Shipping was pretty fast and packaging nice and secure. The drums and brake backing assembly were a breeze to install without instructions. I was a bit surprised though that the back kit did not come with 4 new bolts to secure onto the flange. I used the old ones. The drum kit comes with new lug nuts though. I have no real complaints, I would definitely use etrailer again. Excellent pricing and quality. I installed these brakes the next day after receiving them. I used marine grease from autozone to pack the new bearings. The brakes are bled and adjusted as per the sticker on the kit...adjust til you cannot turn by hand and 10 clicks out. All that's left is to test drive it. 227927

Ask the Experts about this Dexter Axle Trailer Hubs and Drums

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hubs and Drum?

  • Recommendation For Brakes And Drums For WT20GAB Boat Trailer
  • Based on the information you sent, it looks like your inner bearings are Item # L68149 and outer bearings are Item # L44649 which are common for 3,500 lb trailer axles. I did not see in part descriptions the bolt pattern of your wheels but the most common patterns are 5 on 4-1/2, 5 on 5-1/2, and 6 on 5-1/2. I will make recommendations for all based on these bearings sizes. I have attached an article on "how to measure bolt patterns" in case you need it. For a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern,...

  • How to Measure Trailer Hub Drum for Dimensions
  • You can refer to the linked photo that shows how to measure both the diameter and depth of a boat trailer hub/drum. When selecting new hubs there are several characteristics you need to match up to ensure compatibility. Those are weight rating (to match the axle), wheel bolt pattern and the bearing set used in the hub. A new hub has to use the same inner and outer bearings in order for it to fit on your spindles and you want to ensure the bolt pattern for your wheels matches the new...

  • Are There Galvanized Trailer Hub/Drums for Travel Trailers
  • We do have galvanized trailer hub/drums available for travel trailers. For example we have the part # 8-247-50UC3 which fits the very popular 3,500 lb trailer axles and has a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. If you have a different need for a hub/drum let me know and I'll see what we have that would be best option.

  • Shorter Wheel Stud Recommendation for a Trailer Hub 8-247-50UC3
  • The wheel studs of the hub part # 8-247-50UC3 are 1/2 inch diameter x 2-1/4 inches long. For studs that are around 1/2 inch shorter than that you would want the # K12WB169 which is 1/2 inch diameter and 1.70 inches long.

  • Dexter Hub 8-248 Bearing and Seal Replacement Recomendations
  • I am surprised you have a # 10-40 hub seal. The Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # 8-247-50UC3 that you said you have would take a part # 58846 seal or # RG06-020. And then for bearing part # L68149 for the inner bearing, part # L44649 as outer bearing. For races part # L68111 for inner, and # L44610 for outer. If you do have different bearings than what I listed you don't have to order the bearings all as a kit. You could piece together all the parts you need by ordering them individually.

  • How to Pick Out Replacement Hubs for a Boat Trailer
  • In order to pick out the correct hub assembly for a trailer you are going to need know a few key pieces of information. The first thing you will need to know is the bolt pattern of your hubs. Since the figure you came up with doesn't match any of the 5-bolt bolt patterns I am going to need to to recheck your bolt pattern. For further info on this check out the FAQ article I attached on this. Next thing you will need to know is what spindle you have on your trailer. In order to do that...

  • Thank you for the measurements you provided, they are very helpful and tell us everything we need to know to recommend parts that will work for you. Based on your bearing numbers and spindle measurements you need a 3,500 lb hub with a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. The type of hub that you need will depend on whether you have brakes or want a galvanized versus a painted finish. For idler hubs (no brakes), you can use part # 84545BX or # 84545UC1-EZ for EZ Lube spindles. These hubs come with...

What really matters is overall wheel size and not just rim size so bear with me since there are no 10 inch rim options that would work for you.
