Corrosion Resistance for Marine Use

This trailer hub assembly has a zinc coating that resists corrosion, making it ideal for use on your boat or snowmobile trailer. All GAL-DEX hubs undergo a test in which they are sprayed with a 5-percent salt solution to determine corrosion resistance over time. These products are able to withstand 500 hours of constant exposure to the saltwater mist. This 500-hour salt spray rating indicates that a product is not only durable enough to last in freshwater environments, but it can also be used on trailers that come into contact with saltwater

E-Z Lube-Compatible Assembly for Simple Lubrication

The grease cap on this hub-and-drum assembly is specially designed to work with your Dexter E-Z Lube axle to make lubricating bearings quick and easy. Just remove the plug on the grease cap, attach a grease gun to the zerk fitting on the end of the spindle, and inject the grease. It will flow easily to both inner and outer bearings. Not only does this make lubricating the bearings easy, but it also helps to prevent corrosion of the hub. This is because you can lubricate the bearings without the mess of taking apart the entire assembly.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Hubs and Drums - Hub with Integrated Drum - 8-247-50UC3-EZ Review

Today we're going to review part number 8-247-50UC3-EZ. This is the Dexter 10" trailer hub and drum assembly for 3500 lb axles with the 5 on 4 1/2" bolt pattern and this one has the GAL-DEX finish. Now this GAL-DEX finish is corrosion resistant. It's great for marine use and this hub and drum is designed to fit 3500 lb axles with drum brakes. Now, everything shown here on the table is included. It includes the hub and drum, the inner and outer bearings.

Now the bearing races are included. They're just pre-installed already into the hub and drum, the inner here and the outer also. Comes with the double lip grease seal. Comes with the E-Z Lube center cap. Has a removable rubber plug and then 5 of the 1/2" by 20 lug nuts. Now, all of the GAL-DEX hubs, they undergo a test in which they're sprayed with a 5% salt solution and this will help determine corrosion resistance over time so these products are able to withstand 500 hours of constant exposure to the salt water mist.

What happens is this 500 hour salt spray rating will indicate that the product is not only durable and strong enough to last in freshwater environments, but it can also be used on trailers that come in contact with saltwater, so they are also ideal for use on a boat or a snowmobile trailer. Now, the application on this again, it fits 3500 lb axles with the number 84 E-Z-Lube spindles. It does work with the 10" by 2 1/4" electric and hydraulic brake assemblies. Again, the bolt pattern is a 5 on 4 1/2" bolt pattern. The wheel stud diameter is a 1/2" diameter.

The weight capacity on one of these hub and drums is 1750 lbs, so when you use one of these with another one on the other side it'll get you your 3500 lb capacity for the axle. Now, the drum dimension on this. I'm going to show you where it is measured actually. When they measure, it's measured 10" in diameter, so if you take a ruler and go on the inside, 10" across and then the width is 2 1/4. You just put your ruler on the width. It's 2 1/4" and that's why it will work with the 10" by 2 1/4" electric and hydraulic brake assemblies.

Now, the bearings that are included with this. The inner bearing, which is the larger one, it is L68149. The smaller one, which is the outer bearing, is L44649. Basically, the inner goes right in that race and then over that would be the included grease seal, which is part number 10-19. It's the double lip seal. Once you put your inner bearing in there and it stays in there, and then you put your seal and tap it in over that and then on the outside, when you slide this over, this would go on the spindle and in the bearing race that way. Then once it's all tightened down, you put the center cap on, and I mentioned this is the E-Z-Lube center cap, so if you notice, it has a rubber plug that you could pop right out. The reason they do that because when you put this on, the E-Z Lube spindle will have a zerk fitting on the end to where you grease it, so this will give you access with the cap on to that zerk fitting to grease your hub and drum. It will come with the 5 1/2" by 20 size lug nuts that you'll use. Once you put your tire and wheel assembly on, you'll tighten it down with the lug nuts. That should do it for the review on part number 8-247-50UC3-EZ. This is the Dexter 10" trailer hub and drum assembly for 3500 lb axles. Has a 5 on 4 1/2" bolt pattern and the GAL-DEX finish. .

Had to wait a few days for etrailer to get these plated hubs back in stock, but when they arrived installation was what you'd expect. Quality seems very good, and made in USA (bonus). These are Dexter brand hub/drums. Time will tell if the plating will make any difference on my boat trailer application. Originals were not plated and were ugly/rusty, but also 30 years + old so I opted to replace vs have them turned / wire-brush and paint. Glad I waited. 429891

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hubs and Drum?

  • How to Determine the Correct Replacement Hubs for a Boat Trailer
  • To determine which hubs would be best for your boat trailer there are a few things you will need to look at; the axle capacity on your boat trailer, the inner bearing number, outer bearing number, grease seal number, the bolt pattern of your wheels, and whether or not your trailer has brakes. If you do not know what your axle capacity is you can find it located on the axle itself. It is usually located towards the middle and will typically be stamped into the axle. The bearing and...
