Corrosion Resistance for Marine Use

This trailer hub-and-drum assembly has a zinc coating that resists corrosion, making it ideal for use on your boat or snowmobile trailer. All GAL-DEX hubs and drums undergo a test in which they are sprayed with a 5-percent salt solution to determine corrosion resistance over time. These products are able to withstand 500 hours of constant exposure to the saltwater mist. This 500-hour salt spray rating indicates that a product is not only durable enough to last in freshwater environments, but it can also be used on trailers that come into contact with saltwater.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Decided to try a galvanized drum for my boat trailer. Hopefully lasts better with no rust. The wheel studs on these drums are longer than the non galvanized version for some reason.

I got the parts as stated Direct bolt on no issues. I found the web site to be helpful. This is my new trailer parts store.

  • Replacement Galvanized Hub and Drum Assemblies for Boat Trailer w/Bearings L68149 and L44649
We have numerous hub and drum assemblies that use inner bearing L68149 and outer bearing L44649. I have included a link to them for you. There are several different bolt patterns for hubs that take those bearings. The most common is a 5 on 4-1/2 like # 8-247-50 but to be sure you can measure for bolt pattern using the help article I have linked. The race numbers might not be an exact match but that is because they match the bearings AND the hubs so as long as the bearing numbers are correct...

  • Can Electric Brakes be Added to a 5 by 10 foot Utility Trailer
Yes they can, if you check out the link I attached you will see a page that has a guide on how to add electric drum brakes to a trailer. Basically you are going to need to know what spindle you have on your trailer so that you can determine what brake drum/hub would fit it and then build it from there.

  • How to Determine Correct Hub & Drum For Trailer
I can tell you how to determine the correct hub and drum for your trailer, though we don't have any way of knowing specifically what you need for a 1995 Trailswest horse trailer. To find the correct hubs for your trailer, you need to know the weight rating of your axle, and also what bearings your current hub has. You will need to take apart your current hub assembly and look at the bearings themselves; wipe away the grease and you should be able to see the part number stamped directly...

We have found that your trailer has inner bearing L68149, ID 1.378, race OD 2.0362, outer bearing L44649 ID 1.063, and race OD 1.980. I recommend the Dexter Trailer Hub Assembly # 8-247-50UC3-EZ. • New Hubs Do not Fit Over Brake Shoes On Trailer
If the hub you are replacing has 8-247 stamped on it as you mentioned, the part # 8-247-50UC3-EZ, should be the correct replacement. You mentioned the hub will not fit over the brake shoes. You should not need to turn the drums to make the new hub fit. Are the brake shoes new on your system, and are they adjusted properly. You will need to turn the adjusting star wheel to move the shoes in or out for adjustment. I have attached a video that shows how brakes are installed, and at about...

  • Recommended Replacement Hub/Brake Drum for Boat Trailer Axle
I'd almost be willing to bet the farm that your inside bearing is actually a L44649 with an inner diameter of 1.063 inches. A typical 3500 lb axle will have a L68149 inner and a L44649 outer bearing. If that's the case, the Dexter # 8-247-50UC3-EZ galvanized hub/drum you looked at would work well for you. The hub includes the bearings, races, 10-19 grease seal, grease cap and lug nuts.

The offset of the Dexstar wheel part # AM20320 that you referenced has a zero offset. Trailer wheels almost always have a zero offset or at least very close to zero which is why it's so small. Trailer hubs with a 3,500 lb capacity like the # 8-247-50 often have a 2.62 inch pilot which would work well with this wheel as it has a 2.62 inch pilot diameter.
