Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Hubs and Drums - Hub - 8-214-5UC1 Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to take a look at the Dexter oil bath trailer idler hub assembly for 10,000 pound axles. Has the 8 on 6-1/2" bolt pattern. Now this trailer hub assembly is designed to fit idler axles and specifically it's designed to work on the Dexter 10,000 pound idler axles. This hub assembly is an oil bath design. What that means is it will let you check your lubricant level without disassembling the hub. Comes with this oil cap that screws in there.

You can see it's a clear cap so it allows you to see the oil inside there to check your lubrication to see if you need anymore oil or not. It is a sturdy iron construction. This part will include everything shown here on the table, the hub assembly, both inner and outer bearings, the bearing races which are pre-installed in the hub, the oil seal, the oil cap, the wheel retaining ring. The lug nuts are all included. These parts are made in the USA.Again, the application for this is the Dexter 10,000 pound axles.

Bolt pattern on this hub is 8 on 6-1/2" bolt pattern. Pilot hole diameter, which is measured from this side to this side all the way across, is 4-3/4". Wheel bolt diameter is 5/8". The weight capacity on this hub assembly is 5,000 pounds. When this one is matched with one on the other side of the axle, it will meet your 10,000 pound axle capacity. Now the bearings that are included in this, the larger one is the inner bearing.

That's a part number 395S, has an inner diameter of 2.625". The outer bearing, which is part number 387A, has an inner diameter of 2.25". We mentioned the bearing races are all pre-installed already in the hub. Comes with the unitized oil seal, part number 10-56. Has an inner diameter of 3.125" and an outer diameter of 4.5".

The oil cap kit is included. It's part number RGO4-270. When they say kit, that means it's the clear cap, the o-ring that's already installed, and the plug which I installed. The wheel retaining ring is included. That's part number 33-52-1. Then eight of the 5/8 by 18 90-degree cone lug nuts, part number 6-109. All these parts are included. That should do it for the review on the Dexter oil bath trailer idler hub assembly for 10,000 pound axles with the 8 on 6-1/2" bolt pattern.

Ask the Experts about this Dexter Axle Trailer Hubs and Drums

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hubs and Drum?

  • What is Needed to Convert to Electric Over Hydraulic Disc Brakes
  • The Kodiak Disc Brakes # K2R1058D11 may work with your 10,000 lb Dexter axle but you will need to verify this. To do that you can take apart your hub assembly and look at the bearings themselves; wipe away the grease and you should be able to see the part number stamped directly on them. If you are unable to find them, you need to use a digital caliper such as # 301-17068 and measure your spindle to the thousandths of an inch where the bearings ride. You can use the photo I've attached...

  • Will the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit Part # K2R1058D11 Fit a Dexter 10k General Duty Axle
  • Yes, the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit part # K2R1058D11 will work with your Dexter general duty 10,000 lb axles as long as you have an 395S inner bearing (2.625" inner diameter) and 387A outer bearing (2.250" inner diameter). These brakes are only compatible with a specific type of hub which is the two piece Dexter 8-288. If you also need the hub then you can use the Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly part # 8-214-5UC1. I have attached a review video of the hub for you as well.

  • Disc Brake Availability for 10,000 lb Dexter Torsion Axles
  • The Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2R1058D13 looks like it is exactly what you are needing. It is compatible with 10,000 lbs Dexter torsion axles, 17-1/2 inch wheels, and a hydraulic system. It does require a psi rating of 1,500 so as long as your EOH actuator can give that much output this is a viable option. To finish confirming that this kit will work great for your application you will just need to make sure that you have a 7 bolt brake mounting flange location and that your current...

  • How to Convert Dexter 10k Drum Brakes to Electric Over Hydraulic Disc
  • We have just what you would need. For idler hubs you would first need to start with the part # 8-214-5UC1 (if you don't have these already) and then to install a disc brake kit specifically for these hubs you would need the part # K2R1058D11 for each axle. This is a Dexter 10k oil bath setup just like what you have. For an electric over hydraulic drum actuator for your trailer you would want the part # HBA16-252-82. That comes with everything electronically. For a 30 foot long tandem...

  • Replacement Hub and Drum for Dexter 10K Axles with 008-214-05 Hubs
  • The hub you need is # 8-214-5UC1. Since it is separate from the drum you would not need to replace both unless it is time to replace the drum as well if it is worn or damage. If it is then the drum part is # 9-27-1. We also have the mounting bolt for this hub assembly, # 7-103.

  • Technical Drawing for Dexter Hub Assembly # 8-214-5
  • I spoke with my contact at Dexter and was able to obtain the technical drawing for the Trailer Hub Assembly, # 8-214-5. Keep in mind that this hub was designed to fit a spindle from a 10K Dexter axle. I have attached this drawing for you. We do offer part # 8-214-5UC1 which includes the trailer hub assembly, lug nuts, inner bearing ( # 395S ) and race, outer bearing ( # 387A ) and race, oil seal and cap. These are designed to fit 10,000-lb axles with spindles that require a 3-1/4" ID...

  • Switching My Electric Drum Brakes to Hydraulic Drum Brakes on Dexter 10k Axles
  • We carry disc brake kits for the Dexter 10K Standard Duty axle. Unfortunately, there is no disc brake kit available through our venders that fits the Dexter 10K Heavy Duty Axle. You could upgrade to a hydraulic drum brake system from your electric drum brakes. You will need Dexter Left Hand Hydraulic Brake Assembly # 23-404 and the Right Hand Brake Assembly # 23-405. If your drums need to be replaced, you will need Brake Drum Assembly # 9-27-1. You can remove your hubs off your current...

  • How to Choose the Correct Spindle for the Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly # 8-214-5UC1
  • We do carry the Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly # 8-214-5UC1 which is an oil bath assembly for a 10,000 lb axle, but unfortunately we do not carry a spindle that is compatible with it. You would need to source that elsewhere, but I can give you some information so that you can be sure to get the correct spindle. If you look at the linked photo you will notice the highlighted B, C, and D spots. On the spindle that you purchase you need to make sure that B, where your seal sites, measures...

  • Recommendation For Spindle With Biggest Capacity That Fits Dexter Hub Assembly - Item # 8-214-5UC1
  • The biggest spindle we have in stock is a 3,500-lb axle like the Dexter Trailer Axle Beam with Standard Spindles, Item # T3584F-8974. Unfortunately we do not carry a spindle that is compatible with the Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly, Item # 8-214-5UC1. This hub works with 10,000-lb capacity axles. You would need to source that elsewhere with an axle shop/company that carries the larger capacity axles.
