Corrosion Resistance for Marine Use

This trailer hub assembly has a zinc coating that resists corrosion, making it ideal for use on your boat or snowmobile trailer. All GAL-DEX hubs undergo a test in which they are sprayed with a 5-percent salt solution to determine corrosion resistance over time. These products are able to withstand 500 hours of constant exposure to the saltwater mist. This 500-hour salt spray rating indicates that a product is not only durable enough to last in freshwater environments, but it can also be used on trailers that come into contact with saltwater.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Hubs and Drums - Hub - 8-213-51UC1 Review

Today we're going to review part number 8-213-51UC1. This is the Dexter Trailer Hub Assembly for 6000-pound axles. It has the 6 on 5-1/2-inch bolt pattern and the GAL-DEX finish on it. This marine gray trailer hub assembly will fit on idler axles. It includes everything shown on the table here, both the inner and outer bearing are included. The hub assembly right here is included. Now the bearing races are actually pre-installed.

There's the outer bearing race. There's the inner bearing race. It also includes the grease seal, the grease cap and six of the 1/2-inch lug nuts. This trailer hub assembly has a zinc GAL-DEX coating on it which will resist corrosion. It makes it ideal for use on your boat or snowmobile trailer. All of the GAL-DEX hubs undergo a test in which they're sprayed with a 5% salt solution to determine the corrosion resistance over time. These products are able to withstand 500 hours of constant exposure to that salt water mist so this 500-hour salt spray rating will indicate that the product's not only durable enough to last in fresh water environments but it can also be used on trailers that are used in salt water environments. Again, the application on this is 6000-pound axles.

The bolt pattern, again, is 6 on 5-1/2-inches. The wheel stud diameter is 1/2 inch so they included 1/2-inch lug nuts that will used to hold your wheels and tires to this hub. Now the weight capacity on this hub assembly is 3000 pounds. When this is used with one on the other side of the axle, it'll meet your 6000-pound weight capacity for that axle. Now, again, everything shown here is included. That should do it for the review on part number 8-213-51UC1, the Dexter Trailer Hub Assembly for the 6000-pound axles with the 6 on 5-1/2-inch bolt pattern.

All the customer personal were great but got one of hubs the was not sealed like the other 3, the race was rusted and bearing bent . Also the seals were incorrect. Paula S have me the part number for the seals and race so I could get them locally. I’m driving to Weast coast with this trailer tomorrow so no time to wait for etrailer to ship replacement parts

by:

One year and no problems.

by:

Very pleased, easy to install, great qu ality.

by:

The product is exactly what it claims to be. Simple and complete. Just pack the bearings, clean off the axle and assemble. With a boat that goes in salt water, I end up replacing these every few years along with the suspension assembly. Easy job.

by:

This is the exact replacement part I needed for my boat trailer that was delivered in a very economical and fast.

by:

A quality product at a competitive price. Have yet to install but anticipate things will go smoothly

by:

The hubs were mostly good. A couple of the races had spots of surface rusting that needed attention before install. The packaging had no weather protection from moisture.

  • Replacement Galvanized Hubs For Dexter 8-213 on 5,200 lb Axle
Dexter now uses hubs rated for 6,000 lbs for their 5,200 lb axles (as they are discontinuing that specific capacity), but the 6k rated Dexter 8-213 hub will fit the spindle on your 5,200 lb axle as they use the same bearings. The correct galvanized Dexter 8-213 hub for your 5,200 lb axle is the following: - Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly # 8-213-51UC1-EZ If you want to verify you can do so by taking apart your current hub assembly and looking at the bearings themselves; wipe away the...

  • Availability of Trailer Hub that has 6 on 5 inch Bolt Pattern
The standard 6 lug bolt pattern for trailer is 6 on 5-1/2 inch like the part # 8-213-51UC1-EZ that you referenced. There isn't a 6 on 5 inch so my guess is what you have/need is actually a 6 on 5-1/2 inch hub like this one.

  • How to Determine Trailer Axle Rating from Axle Diameter and Bearings Used in Hubs
Often an axle's weight rating will appear on a sticker or plate on the axle beam itself, or sometimes the trailer's main identification sticker will include axle ratings. This is helpful unless of course the axles have been replaced during the trailer's lifetime. Axle diameter can get us at least in the right weight capacity neighborhood. An axle with 3-inch diameter typically has a 6K or 7K weight rating. One that is 3-1/2-inches in diameter is usually rated for 8K. In rare instances...

The hub assembly you referenced, Dexter 6K Trailer Hub Assembly # 8-213-51UC1, has a hub bore of 2.430 inches. I pulled a sample from our warehouse and took a measurement with a precision digital caliper. Based on this hub bore the correct Bearing Buddy is part # BB2441. This set of bearing protectors includes rubber covers.

  • Is There An Idler Hub With 6 on 5-1/2" Bolt Pattern Which Will Fit a Mobile Home Axle?
For a trailer using mobile home axles you will need the Trailer Idler Hub Assembly # 52655IEU to go with idler hubs. This will allow you to weld in a new spindle onto your axle tube which will give you the updated common sizes used on regular trailer axles. This has the same 6 on 5-1/2" bolt pattern as the Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly 8-213- 51UC1 which we no longer carry. We do not carry a hub which fits the spindle used on mobile home axles since they were designed to be thrown away...

  • Idler Hub for Use on Tie Down Axle Part 46648 from Venture Trailer
I was able to find some details about the Venture square axle part 46648 in my research. This square axle is indeed rated for 5200-lbs, is 98-inches long overall including spindles, is galvanized and works with spring centers of 72- or 75-inches. A bit more digging allowed me to determine the bearings required for the included spindle are inner bearing # 25580 and outer bearing # 15123. Since these are the same bearings used in the hub # 8-213-51UC1-EZ it will fit on your spindles. This...

  • Can a Hub/Drum Be Switched Out For An Idler Hub On a 6,000 Lb Trailer Axle
Yes, you can replace the hub/drum that you have on your trailer with a standard idler hub assembly. In order to determine if the Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly part # 8-213-51UC1-EZ is correct you will need to verify that your spindle uses a 25580 (1.75" inner diameter) inner bearing, a 15123 (1.25" inner diameter) outer bearing, and a GS-2250DL (2.25" inner diameter) grease seal. This may require you to read part numbers or measure to verify. If the above is true then you will be...

  • Can I Use Idles Hubs Instead of Drums on the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension
Yes the Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly for 6,000-lb E-Z Lube Axles part # 8-213-51UC1-EZ will work with the Timbren Heavy-Duty Axle-Less Trailer Suspension part # ASR35HDS05. I was able to confirm that they use the same bearings. The reason that they say they are for drums is that typically there are brakes on larger trailers like what the spindles are designed for.

  • Can I Use a Timbren Axle-Less System on a Boat Trailer That is Used in Salt Water
Yes. Timbren Axle-Less Suspension systems like the # ASR35HDS05 have a thick powder coating on them, so they could be used on a boat trailer that gets submersed into salt water and do just fine. The spindle uses # 15123 outer and # 25580 inner bearings and you'll want to use hubs with either a dacromet plating or a galvanized finish. The hubs I recommend would be the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly - 6,000-lb Axles - 12" Diameter - 6 on 5-1/2 - Galvanized # 8-201-51UC3 which would...
