Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Hubs and Drums - Hub with Integrated Drum - 8-201-5UC3 Review

Today, we're going to review part number 8-201-5UC3. This is the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly for 5,200-pound axles with a 6 on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern. Now, this trailer hub and drum assembly will fit on axles that use electric or hydraulic brakes. It includes all the parts showing here, the bearings, the bearing races, which are already pre-installed on the front and the back of the hub assembly, the grease seal, the grease cap, and the lug nuts. Again, this application will fit 5,200-pound axles that'll have spindles that require a 2-1/8 inch inside diameter or 2-1/4 inch inside diameter grease seal, and again, they can be used on axles that have electric or hydraulic brakes. The drum dimension on this would be 12-inch diameter, which is side to side this way, and a 2-inch wide measurement, which is the width right here of the brake drum. Just to show you how that's measured, the diameter will be inside the inside, so that's 12 inches, and the width will be right at 2 inches. Again, the brakes that this will fit over, the brake assembly will normally be listed as a 12 x 2 inch brake assembly, so that's what this drum would fit over.

Again, the bolt pattern on the front, you can see here, is a 6-lug 5-1/2 inch measurement. The wheel studs right here are 1/2 inch diameter. The weight capacity on this one hub and drum assembly is 2,600 pounds, so when you use this on one side and another one on the other side on the axle, that'll give you your 5,200-pound maximum weight capacity. Now, the bearings that are included is this inner bearing, the larger one, which is part number 25580, and again, here's the pre-installed bearing race, so this inner bearing would go right in here. Then you need to seal it with this grease seal. This is a double-width grease seal, so you just put it in there and then tap it into place so that it'll hold everything in. Then the smaller bearing is the outer bearing.

It's part number LM67048. Again, here's the pre-installed outer bearing race. That would just go right in there. Once that slides over, your spindle will come through, and you put your washer and your nut on there. Then everything is tightened down.

You take your grease cap, tap that right in to cover everything. Then it also comes with the six half-inch lug nuts that would be used once everything's all installed. You're going to put your wheels and tires back onto the studs, and you lock the wheels and tires down with these half-inch lug nuts. That should do it for the review on part number 8-201-5UC3, the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly for 5,200-pound axles with the 6 on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern. .

I have ordered from etrailer.com on other occasions and for the most part what keeps me coming back in the pricing. They usually have the lowest price for the same original equipment. Be careful if you haven't heard that your product has shipped in a reasonable amount of time, even if their website says they have the item in stock. They will hold your order until they have all the parts to ship. I had not seen a shipped email for almost a week and when I called they said they would have it to ship in mid august, about a month after I ordered. I was told they had a similar item in stock ready to ship now if I wanted to change my order. I appreciated that and did change my order, however, I needed to know that information at the time they knew it because I had to change my vacation plans because I could not get the parts in time to take our 5th wheel. Overall this is a good place to order parts from and I will keep doing so. 412799

So this was the final upgrade to an 18 year old travel trailer - new brake assemblies, bearings, seals and hubs. The new brakes were a great improvement after a couple of trips break in, assembly was easy (although I do recommend buying a couple extra seals, just in case they get bent on install (ask me how I know). I have never worked on axles before but as a confident diy-er I was comfortable tackling it. Great products that were perfect fit made this an easy deal. 387894

  • Replacement Parts for Dexter Motorhome Axle 8-133
The Dexter 8-133 axle according to my contact at Dexter is an old motorhome axle they no longer make. Their tech said the motorhome axles like what you have are designed for one time use so there are not compatible parts made for even replacement brake shoes, so unfortunately we can't help if you are using the axle for the original purpose on a motorhome. If you have transferred this axle to a trailer instead of a motorhome, which is popular to do, then you can replace both the hubs...

  • Replacement Hubs With Bearings 25580 and LM67048 and Brakes Which Fit
To replace your idler hubs with a hub and drum for electric brakes, what you can do is use Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # 8-201-5UC3 and replace its grease seal with # GS-2250DL, which has the same outer diameter as your current seal so it will work for you. This hub has a 6 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern so finding wheels to fit should be no problem. The idler hub assembly would be # 8-213-5UC1. The hub and drum takes 12" brake assemblies, and the electric brakes that will work are #...

You will need to get the other bearing number from inside your current hubs before we can pick you out replacement hubs. Most likely the outer bearing you pulled is a LM67048 and the inner you have is a 25580 which would mean that the # 8-201-5UC3 would be the correct size hub and drum for you. This hub has a bolt pattern of 6 on 5-1/2 inch and would not work with your current wheels. I attached a page that has all of the wheels and tires we offer in that bolt pattern.

  • What is the Width of Dexter 8-201 Brake Drum?
I believe you are essentially asking about the drum's width, and the drum on the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # 8-201-5UC3 measures 2 inches wide. You can see this being measured in the linked video review that I've added for you.

On Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # 8-201-5UC3 the outer diameter of the hub center is 3-3/16-inches at the top/outer surface, tapering to 3-5/16-inches at the base near the hub face. These dimensions, which I took myself in our warehouse, are noted on the photo I prepared for you. Matching up new hubs requires you to confirm the axle weight rating, the wheel bolt pattern and the bearing set used in the hubs. The trailer hub you referenced, # 8-174-5UC3, uses outer bearing # 15123 so it will not fit your trailer. While the outer bearing information helps, it is only one piece of the puzzle in getting you the right part. Another key piece is the inner bearing size which is stamped on the bearing, if you cannot find the bearing number, then you will need to measure to get the right bearing size. You will need a digital caliper like Item # PTW80157 to measure the spindle at the bearing seats....
