Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Hubs and Drums - Hub with Integrated Drum - 8-201-5 Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to take a look at the Dexter trailer hub and drum assembly for 5,200 pound axles which has a 6 on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern. Now the application for this is 5,200 pound Dexter axles with spindles that'll require a 2-1/8 inch or 2-1/4 inch inside diameter grease seal. This is designed to work with both electric and hydraulic brakes. The drum dimension on this is 12 inches in diameter and 2 inches in width. The diameter would be measured inside to inside. So there's your 12 inches.

And then the 2 inches would be width right there. So 12 inches by 2 inches.Again the bolt pattern on this, let me spin it around, is a 6 lug 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern. This does require a bearing seal and a grease cap which we do sell separately. The bearings, it uses an inner bearing of 25580, that's the inner bearing part number. The outer bearing part number would be LM67048, a grease seal that you can use on this, you can use a 10-1 which is a single lip seal or a 10-10 which is a double lip seal.

And then the grease cap you would use on this is a, if you have a standard axle, it'd be an RG04-060 and if you had an EZ lube axle it'd be a RG04-080. And again the weight capacity on the single hub and drum assembly is 2,600 pounds so when this is used with one on the other side it would fit on a 5,200 pound axle. But that should do for the review on the Dexter trailer hub and drum assembly for 5,200 pound axles with the 6 on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern.

These brake drums appear to be excellent quality parts, all genuine Dexter replacements. These are all Made in USA, replacing the ones on my trailer that are made in China. The reason for three stars is the drums were poorly packaged, causing light to moderate surface marking, and some paint removal. One of the drums also exhibited surface corrosion on the drum ID and armature surface, as well as the inner bearing recess. The drums were wrapped with a single sheet of brown paper, then shipped two per shipping carton, with no additional protection. The damage is not severe enough to warrant return of these heavy items, but I am disappointed in Etrailer's minimalistic packaging process. 617905

Bad: Read the fine print on etrailer before you purchase. I paid with a debit card. It took 2 months for my hubs to be shipped. I thought they charged my card at the time of purchase. They charged 2 months later. This would of been OK if it were a credit card. They almost made me bounce a check by charging my debit card 2 months later. Ok, heres my mistake, I ordered the wrong thing. I am willing to pay the $28 shipping back to you. They charged $28 shipping and a fee of $38. My bill was $224. I was refunded $158. I will not do business with them again. Wonder if they will delete this comment. Good: They are very polite. 465558

Packaging was extensively torn up, and someone attempted to tape it back together. The contents were not packed tightly inside the boxes. The parts were as ordered, and shipping time was as quoted. x Over all I am only giving the rating a 4 star due to the poor packaging. Had the order been something more fragile I question as to whether it would have arrived safely. 449518

One of my trailer's four brake drums cracked which initiated a complete brake system inspection and repair. Having sourced supplies from e-trailer previously, I knew I could get everything I needed quickly and all would be superior quality. Surprisingly, it was more economical to do a complete brake assembly replacement on all four wheels rather than a selective piece/part upgrade on the 12 year old systems. An exact fit meant the whole job was done in a couple of hours. 159089

Ask the Experts about this Dexter Axle Trailer Hubs and Drums

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hubs and Drum?

  • Replacement Brakes and Hub Assemblies for Lippert 5,200 Pound Axle
  • For your trailer the drums you need are # 8-201-5. They're designed to fit bearings # 25580 and # LM67048 with the 2-1/4 inch seal # GS-2250DL. For brakes I recommend # AKEBRK-7-SA. Both the left and right sides are included. They are side specific so you'll want to pay attention to the labels when installing. They're self-adjusting brakes so they'll need to be adjusted when you install them and then never again. The grease cap to fit the hubs is # RG04-080 if you have E-Z lube...

  • Trailer Hub and Drum Recommendation for Replacing Hub with Bearings 25580, LM67048
  • Actually the bearing info you listed indicates you have a very standard number 42 spindle which we have plenty of fits for. Only issue is that you'd need to go with a 6 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern. So for that you'd want the part # 8-201-5 with the bearing kit # BK3-300 and grease cap # RG04-060. Then for brake assemblies part # AKEBRK-7-SA which is a kit for both sides of the axle.

  • Replacement Hubs and Electric Brakes for 2003 Airstream Classic Trailer
  • Based on my research, the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # 8-201-5 will replace the 3160121 drums on your 2003 Airstream Classic. This assembly is designed for 5,200 pound axles and features a 6 on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern. I have attached an article on how to measure your bolt pattern so you can ensure this will be the correct fit. The hub uses # 25580 inner bearing and # LM67048. I also recommend verifying the bearings on your existing hubs so you can be sure this is a perfect match....

  • Recommendation For New Boat Trailer Hub W/Bearings LM67048
  • To determine the best size hub assembly for your needs, I need the inner and outer bearings size of the old assembly. Based on our fit guide, the bearings size you sent, Item # LM67048, appears to be the outer bearings which gives me a great starting point. If Item # LM67048 is the outer bearings size then we have a few options depending on the inner bearings size. If the old assembly has inner bearings, Item # L68149, you would use Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly Item # 8-407-5UC3-EZ....

  • Recommended Lug Nuts for Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # 8-201-5
  • The Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # 8-201-5 referenced in your question will use standard 1/2 inch thread lug nuts like the CE Smith # CE11051. This particular trailer hub and drum assembly is designed for 5,200 pound axles and uses the # 25580 inner bearing and # LM67048 outer bearing, which are not included. I have attached a short video demonstration on this hub that you can also check out.

  • Recommendation For Hub And Drum With Outer Bearing LM67048
  • Based on your information, it sounds like you have either a 4,400-lb or 5,200-lb trailer axle. Both can have an outer bearing like Item # LM67048 but the inner bearing and hubs will be different. For a 4,400-lb axle, the inner bearing will be like Item # L68149 and for a 5,200-lb axle it will be like Item # 25580. I do not know the bolt pattern of your wheels but the most common pattern is 6 on 5-1/2. I have also attached an article on "how to measure bolt patterns" in case you need...

  • Idler Hub to Fit Trailer with 25580 and LM67048 Bearings
  • Hub and drum assembly # 8-201-5 will fit your spindles but like you said the bolt pattern is 6 on 5-1/2. We don't carry a hub that fits # 25580 inner bearing and # LM67048 outer bearing wth a 5 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern. With that pattern I'm guessing you have a mobile home axle. I recommend upgrading to the 6 lug hubs and replacing your wheels as well. Part # 8-201-5 is a hub and drum assembly and you mentioned you're looking for idler hubs. If you only need the idler with no brake...

These brakes are designed for trailer axles from 5,200 pounds to 7,000 pounds and will fit your 12 inch x 2 inch drums. The brake assemblies are self-adjusting so you will not need to make adjustments to the brakes. I have attached a...

  • Will Dexter Hub Fit On An Axletek Backing Plate And Brake Assembly?
  • Yes. A Dexter hub like # 8-201-5 that is 12x2 will be compatible with an Axle Teknology brake assembly and backing plate like # AKEBRK-7-SA. The brake assemblies just need to be compatible with your mounting flange, but the drum/hubs need to have the proper bearing fit for your spindle. If the parts are a correct fit, you won't have any issues using them together as they are compatible.

If you want the entire hub assembly, we have the Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly for 5,200-lb and 6,000-lb Axles - 6 on 5-1/2 # 8-213-5UC1 or the hub and drum assembly # 8-201-5.

If your wheels have a 6 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern then this is the hub for you. This hub and drum takes 12 x 2 inch brakes. • How to Select Replacement Hub/Drums and Brakes
  • When you need to select replacement hubs/drums you want to match up a few things; the axle weight rating, the hub/drum size, the bearings used in the hub and the wheel bolt pattern. A new hub has to use the same inner and outer bearings in order for it to fit properly on your spindles, and of course it also has to be rated to match the axle capacity - for an example, a 2000-lb axle will need two hubs each rated for 1000-lbs. However, this hub wouldn't be compatible with a 15 inch wheel, which is what you were wanting because you already have a set of tires for a 15 inch wheel.
