Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Hubs and Drums - Hub with Integrated Drum - 8-173-16UC3 Review

Today were going to review part number 8-173-16UC3. This is the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly for electric brakes on a 2200 lb axle. This Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum is designed for 2000 lb trailer axles with electric brakes. The drum size is a 7-inch by 1-3/4. This will work with the part number 23-47 and part number 23-48 electric brake assemblies. This hub will only fit with the 1-1/4 inch brake shoes and will not fit with the 1-3/4 inch brake shoes.

It does have a bolt pattern of 4 on 4 inches and this hub and drum does come with the bearings which in this case would use the same inner and outer bearing which is part number L44649. It will come with the part number 10-6 degree seal. It will come with the grease cap that will go on the outer edge of your hub. And it does come with the 1/2-inch cone seat lug nuts to attach the wheel to your hub. The races are also included but they will come pressed into the hub and drum assembly.

Heres the outer race here and right there is the inner race. All of our hub and drum assemblies will come with the races preinstalled into the hubs. This hub and drum assembly has a capacity of 1100 lbs so when used with one on the other side of an axle you would have a weight capacity of 2200 lbs. I just want to give you a couple measurements. This is a 7-inch drum size so if you measure across on the inside it would be 7 inches.

And it does have a bolt pattern of 4 on 4 inches. And basically, when you have a bolt pattern thats usually an even number of bolt lugs you can just measure from the center of one stud to the center of the other to get you the 4-inch bolt pattern. In this case because the hub center stands higher than the lugs its very hard to get an actual reading. So if the other way would be just go to measure from center of this lug to the center of the lug right next to it either way and that would measure 2-3/4 inches and that will determine that this a 4 on 4-inch bolt pattern. And that should do it for our review on part number 8-173-16UC3..

Electric Brake kit for trailer this time. The parts are very acceptable and the service is supreme. Couldn't get any better service anywhere. I've bought a lot of items from etrailer for a couple years now. I have had great experiences with each and every order. 384639

I had to replace one hub on my pop-up camper and decided I should do both wheels. The parts I ordered came very quickly (3 days), without having to pay extra for quick shipping. The parts matched perfectly and the job went very smoothly. My only complaint is that one of the hub covers/grease seals was dented and bent. It looks like it was damaged during shipment as it was not packaged separately but instead was taped to the outside of the hub. Luckily one of my old seals was reusable and everything worked out. 383216

A year ago I bought these as part of an overhaul for a 1976 coleman pop-up camper. Many parts on it were obsolete, so I had to change the drums along with the entire suspension. I am pleased to say they work great with my electronic brakes! We've taken our refurbished trailer on 2 long-distance trips (including one into the mountains) and the brakes and drums perform very well! 382867

First of all, the product description on the eTrailer website was very detailed and very complete. With all the different axle sizes and types out there, it was nice to have the specs to make sure I was ordering the right part. I like the shipping tracker. It's easy to use, and I knew where the shipment was, and when to expect delivery. That was nice, because my hub arrived a day later than I thought it would. (When you order on Good Friday, on Easter weekend, 3 day shipping might take an extra day. I should have expected that.) I thought that rebuilding the existing hubs would be a good idea. And it was. But while driving the new bearing race into place, I let the race get crooked, and I cracked the hub. The old hub uses bolts to mount the wheel. The new hub has studs and lug nuts, which makes tire changing much easier. The new hub comes with the race pre-installed, just have to apply grease and tap in the rear seal. very easy. All things concidered, I'm very happy with the entire process, and will probably order a roof rack for my pop up camper from etrailer in the near future. 370199

Everything in one package taped to the hub. I would have offered more protection for shipping to the bearing and seal then just taping it to the hub but it did arrive unscathed. Quality seemed good. Went together easy. Lost the first dust cap on my first trip around the block for a brake adjustment test. Lost the second on the second trip (about 10 miles). I ordered replacement dust caps and the tap on tool. Not sure if I didn't have them on well enough or if there is a product problem there. I have done a lot of these and never had a problem before. 369776

The first 2 drum and hub combos i got were machined crooked and the second set had to be turned on a drum lathe before the brakes would work properly. I lost time and money being broke down and paying to have the drums checked and turned at a machine shop. Maybe made in China? The people at e trailer were helpfull and prompt no complaints there, just the quality of product. 284758

Fit my 1997 Starcraft Starflyer 1021 popup camper. Only problem was that it came with the wrong bearings (came with L44643 instead of L44649). Had to call and now I have to wait another week to do the job. 246352

Not sure if these hubs are going to work. Spent a hour today installing and found small size differences between old and new ones. I thought kit was supposed to include everything, but it was missing cotter pins and bearing washers. This was not my first purchase from etrailer, but I could of used more information on hub dimensions. I was replacing surge brake hubs for a 1992 Jayco popup. I would suggest adding links to mechanical drawings with guidance on what and where to measure to get the best product. 235104

Ask the Experts about this Dexter Axle Trailer Hubs and Drums
Do you have a question about this Trailer Hubs and Drum?

  • Recommended Hubs And Electric Brake Assemblies For Tandem Axle Snow Bird Snowmobile Trailer
  • You can add electric brakes to both axles of your Snow Bird Snowmobile Trailer. To do so you will need new drums only on the axles that don't currently have brakes. You may be able to use your current surge brake hubs for your electric brake assemblies, but often electric hubs on this smaller size require a change due to thickness of the hub. For your hubs, I recommend the Trailer Hub & Drum Assembly - 2,200 lbs. Axles - 4 on 4 # 8-173-16UC3. For your electric brake assemblies, I...

  • Brake Drum for a Reliable 2,700 Pound Trailer Axle
  • If the spindles on your Reliable 2,700 pound axle are straight (same diameter in both bearing locations) then that indicates that it uses L44649 inner and outer bearings but if the spindles are tapered (inner bearing surface diameter is larger than the outer bearing surface diameter) then it will use L68111 for the inner bearing and L44649 for the outer. If you pull a hub off and find that both bearings are L44649 you can use # AKHD-545-2-EZ-2K if there are grease fittings at the ends...

The hubs for a 2,200 pound axle that we carry have a 4 on 4 bolt pattern; parts # 8-173-16UC3-EZ for E-Z lube axles and # 8-173-16UC3 for standard axles. You need to verify that your Little Guy Silver Shadow uses bearings # L44649 for both the inner and outer to confirm the hubs are correct.

  • Can Drums from a Trailer with 7 Inch Hydraulic Brakes be Used When Converting to Electric Brakes
  • You might be able to re-use the drums. Some 7 inch hydraulic drums are sized differently and will not allow electric brake assemblies to be properly positioned in the drum. Some times the hydraulic drums are too deep and will make contact with the brake backing plate before they are seated all the way on the spindle. The best way to proceed is to try re-using the drums first and if they do not fit get drums made for electric brakes or you can buy electric brake drums from the start. We...
