Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Hubs and Drums - Hub with Integrated Drum - 42866UC3 Review

Today were going to review part number 42866UC3. This is the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly 8 on 6-1/2-inch bolt pattern. This trailer Hub and Drum Assembly will include the eight 1/2-inch cone seat lug nuts. It will include the inner bearing, part number 25580, the outer bearing part number 14125A, it will include the 2-1/4 grease seal and the grease cap. The races, the bearing races are also included and they will be actually preinstalled into the hub. The outer race would be right here.

The inner race would be right in there. All of our Hub and Drum Assemblies will come with the races preinstalled. The application for this Hub and Drum Assembly is for most 5200 to 7000-lb Dexter axles with spindles that will require either a 2-1/8 inch grease seal or a 2-1/4 inch inside diameter grease seal. The drum dimension is 12 inches diameter by 2 inches wide. The bolt pattern is an 8 on 6-1/2 inch bolt pattern.

The stud diameter is 1/2 inch. This Hub and Drum Assembly will fit on spindles that are either 2-1/8 or 2-1/4. It does come with the 2-1/4 inch inside diameter grease seal. If you do need the 2-1/8 seal you will need to use part number 10-1. The capacity on this assembly is 3500 lbs.

So when this is used with another assembly on the other side it will give you the maximum capacity of 7000 lbs. Now just a couple dimensions. The bolt pattern is an 8 on 6-1/2 inch which means eight lugs, 6-1/2 inch diameter and basically the way to measure that usually on a bolt pattern that is an even number of lugs like in this case eight. You just measure directly across from the center of one to the center of the other. Thats 6-1/2 but its hard to do because of this higher hub in the middle.

So if you just measure from a one wheel stud next to the other wheel stud and if it measures 2-1/2 inches that would also mean its an 8 on 6-1/2 inch bolt pattern. The other dimension would be the drum dimension which is 12-inch diameter and 2 inches wide. So 12-inch diameter on the inside would be 12 inches, the diameter is 2 inches. And that should do it for our review on part number 42866UC3.

Dexter hubs are a perfect fit to Dexter brake assemblies. Perfect fit and brake good. Self adjustors keep the trailer brakes always adjusted correctly. Drums are machined round and true, not like willfit drums which have to be turned 254230

Item was shipped and delivered very quickly. Shipping container was damaged, but items were fine. Top quality product at a Great Price. 4 stars because shipping container was to big for heavy drums. Drums were able to move freely. Corner of box had a large tear in it (open). Nothing fell out of container, drums had some rub wear marks. Thanks for the fast shipment and quality product. 351246

  • Replacement Hubs, Brake Assemblies, and Tire/Wheel Combination for Old Trailer With Dexter Axles
  • I have replacement hub, brake, and tire/wheel options to replace what you have on your Dexter axle. They will fit the spindle measurements that you sent me of: A is 3" B is 2.125" C is 1.75" D is 1.25" E is 1" The replacement hub and drum assembly that fits that spindle is the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # 42866UC3. With this assembly you will need to purchase the grease seal # GS-2125DL which has the smaller I.D. of 2.125 inches. If you have E-Z Lube spindles on your...

  • How to Determine Axle Capacity on Old Trailer
  • I do have a way to give you an idea as to what the axle capacity is for your trailer but I called Dexter Axle and they were not able to look up the number, "021362" that you provided due to its age. If you have a leaf spring axle then what you are going to want to do is measure the diameter of the axle tube. Once you measure the axle tube you can then use the chart below to give you an idea of what the weight capacity is. If you have a torsion axle then your next best option would be to...

  • Can I Put Different Hub Assembly on 5th Wheel
  • It looks like your 5th Wheel currently is a Nev-R-Lube Hub and Drum Assembly for 7,000 lbs Axles with an 8 on 6-1/2 bolt pattern # 8-385-81SP. This is the assembly that you will want to order for your 5th Wheel. I have included a video review of this assembly for you to check out. • Trailer Hub Recommendation for a Number 42 Spindle
  • Based on the dimensions you listed it sounds like you have a number 42 spindle. All you need to do now is verify that the surface of the spindle where the seal rides is 2.24 inches. If so then the trailer hub like the part # 42866UC3 would fit and work well. It will require a trailer rim with an 8 6-1/2 inch bolt pattern though like part # TTWA16RGSMHD.

The camber or bow of an axle, its length, the quality of materials, the diameter, and many other factors go into its capacity rating. So in a way, yes, it is all in the axle tube, that and other factors as mentioned above. Ideally you will get parts that are rated the same as the axle. But since the wheel pilot hole is smaller, you will not be able to use the hubs you purchased without also replacing the wheels.
