Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Hubs and Drums - Hub - 42865-KIT Review

Today we're going to review part number 42865-KIT. This is the Dexter Trailer Hub Assembly for 5,200-lb, 6,000-lb and 7,000-lb. Either standard grease or EX Lube Axles. This hub has the 8 on 6-1/2" bolt pattern. Again, the application on this is 5,200 lb to 7,000 lb Dexter Axles with spindles that do require a 2 1/4" inside diameter grease seal. The bolt pattern on it is 8 on 6 1/2". It does include everything showing here on the table.

It also include the inner and outer bearings. It does include the bearing races which we're already pre-installed in the hub. There's the outer bearing race and there's the inner bearing race. It does include the grease seal. It does come with two grease caps depending on which axle you put it on if you use it on the EZ Lube axle.

You want to use this cap that has the center rubber plug that you can pop out. When you have it on there that gives you access to that zerk fitting on the end of the EZ Lube spindle. It also comes with the standard grease cap, if you're using it on a standard grease axle. It comes with 8 of the half inch lug nuts that would be used on the half inch diameter wheel studs that are on the hub. That should hold your wheels and tires to this assembly. Now, the capacity on this hub is 3,500 lbs.

when this is paired with one on the other side of the axle, it would meet your largest weight capacity axle which would be the 7,000 lbs axle. That should do it for the review on part number 42865-KIT. The Dexter Trailer Hub Assembly for 5,200-lb, 6,000-lb and 7,000-lb standard grease or EZ Lube axles, with the 8 on 6 1/2" bolt pattern. .

Ask the Experts about this Dexter Axle Trailer Hubs and Drums

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hubs and Drum?

  • Correct Timbren Silent Ride Suspension System for a [email protected] Tear Trailer
  • According to my research, your [email protected] trailer has torsion axles which means the Timbren Silent Ride Suspension System like part # TSR3500S05 will not be a good fit for you. Instead, you will want to use the Timbren Heavy-Duty Axle-Less Trailer Suspension part # ASR35HDS02. This kit will replace the torsion axles you have now and provide up to a 4" lift and the ability to run larger off-road tires. For a compatible hub you will also need the Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly part # 42865-KIT.

  • Off Road Axle Recommendation for Trailer for 8 on 6-1/2 inch Bolt Pattern Hub
  • The Timbren Heavy-Duty Axle-Less Trailer Suspension # ASR35HDS02 will be perfect for you. It's got a 4 inch lift built into it and is set up for wider tires so it's ideal for off-road applications. And then for a hub with the 8 lug pattern that you need you would want the part # 42865-KIT that you referenced.

  • Will Redline Spindle R50642 Fit Dexter Trailer Hub Assembly 42865-KIT
  • The Redline Spindle # R50642 is compatible with the Dexter Trailer Hub Assembly # 42865-KIT. Since the hub uses bearings 25580 and 14125A, whose inner diameters match up to the spindle dimensions, the hub will work on the spindle. Spindles need to be professionally welded on perfectly straight and concentric to ensure you do not have issues with trailer tracking or uneven tire wear.

  • Installation of Idler Hub on 7,000 lb EZ Lube Axle
  • I took a look at the installation instructions in regards to using a the nut retainer as opposed to a cotter pin and it specifies: "1) Finger tighten the nut until just snug ... Once in place the retainer/nut assembly should be free to move slightly. 2) If the nut is too tight, remove the the retainer and back the nut off approximately one twelfth of a turn and reinstall the retainer. The nut should now be free to move slightly."

  • Compatibility of Kodiak # K2R79 Disc Brake Kit with 5th Wheel w/ Tandem 7K Dexter Axles
  • The Kodiak # K2R79 disc brake kit is designed to slip over an idler hub, not a hub drum. A 7K Dexter axle uses the 25580 inner bearing and a 14125A outer bearing with a 10-36 grease seal. To make that particular kit work, you'd need to remove the existing hub drum and electric brake assembly and install an idler hub that's compatible with your existing axle spindles, like part # 42865-KIT. You'd be better off going with a hub/rotor kit. I'd recommend using the Kodiak # K2HR712E and...

  • Replacement Hub Assembly for Axle with 1-1/4 Inch Diameter Outer and 1-3/4 Inch Inner Bearing
  • If you do not need electric brakes on your axle, I recommend the Dexter Trailer Hub Assembly # 42865-KIT. This assembly includes the # 25580 inner bearing, the # 14125A outer bearing, and a grease seal with a 2-1/4 inch inner diameter needed for the spindle on your existing axle. Also included with the assembly are the races, grease cap, wheel bolts, and lug nuts. The hub has a 8 on 6-1/2 wheel bolt pattern. One hub assembly is included for the part number. You would want 2 of the #...

  • Which Spindle is Used with Trailer Hub Assembly, Part # 42865UC1
  • There are two spindle options for the Trailer Hub Assembly, part # 42865-KIT. The spindle used would depend on the capacity of your axle. For a 5000 pound axle, use part # R50642. For a 5200 pound axle, you would use part # R50342EZ. The R50342EZ is an EZ lube spindle with the zerk fitting for adding grease to the bearing assemblies.

  • Compatibility of Automotive Wheel with 9/16 Inch Lug Holes with Trailer Hub Using 1/2 Inch Studs
  • The taper of the lug nuts should take up the .062 difference between the 9/16 inch hole and the 1/2 inch wheel stud, allowing the lug nuts to tighten with no problem. In most cases you can use an automotive wheel on a trailer, but you will need to make sure that the wheels have the proper capacity for the load you will be carrying. You will be limited to the capacity of the lowest rated component, whether it be the wheel or the capacity of the axle. Most trailer wheels have a zero offset,...

  • Hub that Fits Same Spindle as Hub/Drum # 8-219-4UC3
  • The part # 8-219-4UC3 is a hub/drum but for a hub without the drum that would fit the same spindle you would want the part # 8-231-50 and then would need to provide the seal part # RG06-090 as it does not come with seals and this is the same as what you need.

  • Available 8-Lug Trailer Hubs for Spindle AS6000F
  • None of the available 8-on-6-1/2 hubs use the bearings required for a fit on agricultural spindle # AS6000F. That spindle requires a hub that uses bearings 506849 and 501349. We have one hub that fits that spindle, part # AH60880FCOMP, but this has an 8-on-8 bolt pattern. We do offer trailer hubs with the 8-on-6-1/2 wheel bolt pattern. These include both hub/drums like Dexter # 42866UC3-EZ and idler hubs like # 42865-KIT and all appear on the linked page.

  • Recommended Hub and Drum and Brake Assemblies for Mobile Home Axles on Trailer
  • For your front axle, I recommend the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # 42866UC3. Then for your brakes, I recommend # 23-105 for the left hand (driver's side) and # 23-106 for the right hand. If you have hydraulic brakes, then I recommend # 23-324 and # 23-325 instead. For your rear axle, I recommend the Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly # 42865-KIT. If you need tires to match the hubs, I recommend the Westlake ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 16" Silver Mod # LHAW133. These...

  • Lug Nut Recommendation for a 1/2 inch Studs on Kodiak Disc Brake Kit
  • The taper of the lug nuts should take up the .062 difference between the 9/16 inch hole and the 1/2 inch wheel stud, allowing the lug nuts to tighten with no problem. For acorn nuts to fit a 9/16 inch stud you would want the part # 12CLN, or for an open nut you would want part # CE11051. Either of these would work fine for you.

  • Replacing Trailer Hubs with 1.25", 1.75" Bearings and 2.3" Seal Measurements on Spindle
  • Thank you for the measurements! From the info you gave me it sounds like you have axles rated somewhere between 5,200 lbs - 7,000 lbs. For this we have the following: Idler hub with 6 on 5-1/2" bolt pattern - # 8-213-5UC1-EZ Idler hub with 8 on 6-1/2" bolt pattern - # 42865-KIT Hub and Drum with 6 on 5-1/2" bolt pattern - # 8-201-9UC3-EZ You will need to use grease seals # RG06-070 for these Hub and Drum with 8 on 6-1/2" bolt pattern - # 42866UC3-EZ All of these kits have...

  • Does Kodiak Disc Brake Kit K2R79E Fit Dexter Axle 4766709
  • The Dexter Axle 4766709 you mentioned is a 7,000 lb straight axle that is 88 inches long which is exactly what the Kodiak disc brake kit part # K2R79E is designed to fit. This is designed to fit 7k rated idler hubs with an 8 on 6-1/2 inch bolt pattern like the Dexter part # 42865-KIT which also is a fit for your axle.

  • Would Trailer Hub # 42865-KIT and Hub & Drum Assembly # 42866UC3 Work Well Together
  • Yes, the Trailer Hub Assembly # 42865-KIT and the Trailer Hub & Drum Assembly # 42866UC3 would work well together for having a brake axle and an idler axle. The both have the same bolt patterns, weight capacities, and use the same bearings so they would work very well together. I would recommend you install the brake axle on the axle closest to your tow vehicle. I attached a video of how to remove and re-install hubs from a spindle.

  • Difference Between Dexter 8 on 6-1/2 inch Trailer Hubs # 8-231-9UC1-EZ and # 42865-KIT
  • The difference between the two trailer hubs you referenced part # 8-231-9UC1-EZ and # 42865-KIT is that the # 42865-KIT comes with two different grease cap styles and the # 8-231-9UC1-EZ only comes with one, the EZ lube style that has a rubber plug that can be removed for easy access to the zerk fitting of the spindle for greasing. The # 42865-KIT comes with a EZ style cap as well as a standard grease cap. I attached review videos for both hubs for you to check out as well.
