Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Review of Dexter Trailer Hubs and Drums - Hub - 34822545BX

Today we're going to take a look at the Dexter Trailer Pre-Greased Idler Hub Assembly for a 2,000 pound axles, with the five on four and a half inch bolt pattern. Now this is a pre-greased idler hub, which is easy to install, so there's no need to pack bearings with grease. Comes all pre-greased. The bearings are all installed, and their pre-seal is pressed into place, so it's ready to put right on. Now this trailer hub assembly fits standard and easy-lube idler axles. Comes with the inner and outer bearings.

The bearing races, the grease seal, the wheel lug nuts and two different grease caps, one for a standard axle, the other for an easy lube axle, which has the center removable plug to allow you to grease the easy lube axle. The hub is a sturdy arm construction, has half-inch diameter wheel studs, and it is made in the U.S.A. A few specs on it. The application is 2000 trailer axles, with the BT8 spindles. It does have a five and a half inch diameter hub flange, which is measured from here to here, so that means you can use a wheel size of eight inches up to 12 inches. Bolt pattern on this is a five on four and a half inch bolt pattern.

We mentioned a wheel lug diameter of a half an inch. Weight capacity on this one hub is 1,250 pounds. The bearings that are pre-installed are part number L44643, for both inner and outer bearings. Races are pre-installed, and the grease seal that's installed is a part number 34823.But that should do it for the review on the Dexter Trailer Pre-Greased Idler Hub Assembly for the 2,000 pound axles, with the five on four and a half inch bolt pattern.

Hubs went on without any trouble. Only tricky part was to get the caps seated into the hub to trap the grease. Haven't used the trailer yet, but don't anticipate any problems. Shipping was awesome. I ordered with standard shipping and the box was on my porch the next afternoon. 131003

Ask the Experts about this Dexter Axle Trailer Hubs and Drums

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hubs and Drum?

  • Inspecting Trailer Spindle and Locating Replacement Bearings for Used Trailer
  • The small cut that you noticed when inspecting the spindle on your trailer can cause bearings and seals to wear out very quickly (even extremely small ones). A quick test to see if a replacement spindle is in order is to simply run your fingernail across the spindle. If it catches as you run along the mentioned cut/nick, replacing the spindle will be your best option. I am not aware of a bearing that features an inner diameter of 1.125 inches like what you mentioned. With that being...

This part serves as both inner and outer bearing according to the manual, which I linked for you. We sell this bearing as an individual part and also as part of a complete bearing kit # BK1-100 which includes 2 of bearing # L44643, 2 of race # L44610, 1 grease seal # 34823 and a cotter pin. You'll need two kits per axle. The hub that uses...

The first thing you will need to know is the bolt pattern of your hubs, since you are looking for 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern this is covered. Next thing you will need to know is what spindle you have on your trailer. In order to do that you can either get the inner and outer bearing numbers from a hub or use a dial caliper to get exact measurements of the spindle....

  • Hub Recommendations to fit a BTR Spindle with 1.06 C and D Dimensions
  • Based on the C and D dimensions you listed you have a BTR spindle. The correct idler hub with a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern that you would need would be the Trailer Hub Assembly # 8-259-5UC1-EZ. If you needed a hub and drum assembly for your spindle you would need the Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # 8-257-5UC3. The # 34822545BX would not work on your spindle dimensions.

  • What Size Hub will Work with the 215/60-8 Trailer Tire with 8 Inch Galvanized Wheel Load Range D
  • The proper size hub for the 215/60-8 bias trailer tire and wheel, # AM3H325, is going to depend on the weight capacity of the trailer you are designing. This wheel and tire combination is capable of 1,165 lbs at 70 psi, so each axle in your design would need to be rated for 2,330 lbs or less. Most likely if this is the proper capacity for your design you will be using a 2,000 lb axle and the Trailer Hub Assembly, # 34822545BX, would be the proper choice if the spindle on the axle you...

  • The best way to determine which replacement hubs you need for your trailer would be to remove one of the hubs and retrieve the bearings. I have included a link to our spindle main page. At the top of the page is a diagram showing all of the measurements we would need to find the correct hubs...

  • What Limits the Speed of a Trailer
  • What limits the speed a trailer can go is the tires. Trailer tires are only rated to go 65 miles per hour. If you are traveling fast enough that bearings in good condition begin to damage themselves the trailer tires are probably already in the process of failing. Trailer tires are built with a thicker sidewall, to handle vertical loads, that get hot enough to fail when you exceed 65 miles per hour. Going to a larger diameter wheel/tire will not give you the ability to exceed the...
