Rugged, Matte Black Finish

The sturdy steel construction is protected with a matte black finish for added durability. This unique powder coating gives etrailer hitches a carbide-like appearance and a rugged look that sets them apart from traditional glossy hitches. In addition to being rust and corrosion resistant, the tough matte coating hides dirt, scuffs, and dings better than a glossy finish.

Video Transcript for etrailer.com Trailer Hitch Installation - 2006 Toyota Sienna

Speaker 1: Seeing this 2006 Toyota Sienna we'll be having a look at and showing you how to install the etrailer.com Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number E98837. Here's what our hitch looks like installed. One thing you'll notice about this hitch is that it does sit as close to our body of the vehicle as possible to give us the most ground clearance. We do have plenty of clearance around our receiver, which makes this a great hitch to use with bike racks and cargo carriers. On the side of our receiver here, you'll find our industry standard 5/8th of an inch diameter hitch pin hole that you use a pin and clip with, available separately at our website as part of our PC3 to secure any of your accessories. Welded on the bottom of our receiver in the frame of the hitch are our plate style safety chain loops. What's nice about these is if you have a large diameter safety chain hook like this one, you can still easily clip on and clip off without any problems.

On the back of our receiver we have this nice collar that's welded on to give us a nice finished look and it also does help improve the strength of the receiver opening. This hitch is rated for 350 pounds max tongue weight rating and 3500 pounds maximum trailer weight rating. It does support the use of weight distribution and when you're using that in your trailer, your tongue weight rating increases to 500 pounds and your max gross trailer weight rating increases to 5000 pounds. You wanna make sure that you do consult with the owner's manual of your Sienna and you do not exceed what the vehicle's rated for. Go by whichever number's less. Now one unique feature about this hitch that other hitches for the Sienna don't offer is the mat black carbide powder coat finish.

It is much more rust resistant and scratch resistant than other options out there. Now for a few measurements to better assist you in choosing any hitch mounted accessory you may need such as the ball mount, bike rack or cargo carrier. You're looking about ten inches from the ground to the top of the two inch receiver opening and about six inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to remove this part of the back bumper. Now that I've gone over some features, we'll show you how to get it installed. To begin our install we may or may not have an under body panel that covers up our trunk area here.

Depending upon your application if you have it, you'll need to remove it and modify it in order to reinstall it. As you can see here, the Sienna that we have here today doesn't have this panel. We're gonna look up at our driver side frame rail and point out our attachment points. Our passenger side will be a mirror image of this. We'll have three well nuts, two closest to that and one closest to the front. We've already went ahead and sprayed some spray lubricant in there and now we use a wire brush, which we have available on our website.

It's part number 814092 and run it in and out of the threads a few times to help remove any loose dirt, debris or corrosion. And we'll do this on all of our attachment points. With our well nuts cleaned our know, we'll have a bolt and a conical tooth washer. The teeth of the washer will face away from the bolt head up towards our hitch and these will be what will secure the hitch into place. Now we'll get an extra set of hands to raise our hitch into position. We'll raise it up over our exhaust on the passenger side and then up into position. And I'll secure it with our bolts. Once we have one started several turns, it'll hold the hitch up and then he'll release it. All right, with all of our hardware started we can now tighten it down using a 19 millimeter socket. Now we'll torque all of our hardware to the amount specified in the instructions. And that completes our look at and showing you how to install the etrailer.com Class Three Trailer Hitch Receiver part number E98837 on this 2006 Toyota Sienna.

The hitch fit like a glove. I only wish Toyota had left some plugs in the six mounting holes. 8 years of road spray took their toll on the threads. I searched high and low for a tap or a wire brush to clean up the threads and came up empty at Home Depot, Lowes, and three different auto parts stores. Fortunately some anti-rust spray and working one of the bolts in and out of the threads a few times was enough to get all six bolts driven in. 534320

Excellent product, install was easy, took me less then 1 hour. Hitch was packed very well, only 1 small 1 inch scrach was all. As a matter of fact the only reason I didn't mark the highest raiding was cause it took three days to ship, not arrive, rather leave the warehouse, they also didn't give me a tracking number until I emailed them requesting one. Good communication but I started each, not them. In the end I'm happy and would purchase from them again. Again, hitch itself was excellent. 534223

I am fairly mechanical and can savvy instructions well enough, so I read over them a few times prior to installing. I installed this by myself, with no other hands helping me - if this is you, READ ON! I jacked up the back of the van and used two jack stands so that I could actually breathe. That made all the difference (don’t forget your parking brake!). There is a piece of the body that is plastic - you will have to remove this and cut a hole so that the hitch mount will actuallly fit. I took the time to do this and it made the install so much easier. I had a set of tin snips and they worked great for this. Although, pay attention to the different fittings that hold this piece of plastic in place. There are three different kinds: Phillips screw, LARGE Phillips screws, and little pop out fittings. So you take this thing off and put it back on before you ever get to any of the actual installation. There are covers for the welded frame nuts on the Sienna. They are basically stickers. I jabbed a hole in them with a screw driver and pulled them apart to expose the nut. Since they are covered, mine were clean as a whistle and I didn’t have to blow them out or use a wire brush. Instructions for this item are great, measurements for the piece you HAVE to cut are totally correct, except I would make them bigger so you can fit your ratchet extension in. I DID NOT lower the exhaust. I actually used it as a prop on the passenger side as I finger tightened a bolt on the driver side (remember I did this by myself). Then I finger tightened a couple of bolts on the exhaust (passenger) side. After finger tightening all of the bolts, I took my time tightening each bolt twice. I don’t have a torque wrench, so I don’t know how tight they are. I tend to have a tight grip, so I am sure they are fine, but I’ll check them again in a week or so. NOTE, tightening the bolts on the exhaust side requires you to pull the exhaust to the side so you can get your ratchet in position. I used the ratchet extension as leverage and this helped. If you could lower the exhaust, it might be easier, but that seemed like a needless pain. We are taking our first trip with it this weekend - carrying three mountain bikes. I’ll check the bolts when we get there and when we get back. All in all, this hitch mount is a beast. Very heavy duty, and will handle anything our Vinnie-Man will dish out :) 608880

Thanks for the review! I highly recommend making sure those bolts are correctly torqued. Most national chain auto parts stores will loan tools for free if you leave a deposit, thatd be a great way to borrow a torque wrench.

It was a tight fit, i had to use a hammer to spread the flange apart about 1/4 in ch to get the bolt holes to line up correctly with the holes in the frame. Once i did that it was a qyick install. 560033

Shipped extremely fast after ordering. Delivered quickly by UPS. The box was very well stapled together. The box looked like UPS gave it the bottom of the truck treatment but the hitch was perfect condition and all parts included. I installed it myself on a 2014 Toyota Sienna minivan using the included instructions and watching the videos on the site. The installations was identical to the video on the site. I highly recommend using two people to hold the hitch or a jack stand and a floor jack. I did not have those and used a stack of 2x4's to get the hitch balanced in place. I used the torque wrench to get the bolts tightened to instructions. The video install of the identical vehicle is why I purchased from etrailer. There is a little over 9 inches of clearance from the bottom of the hitch opening. I will be using a 5 bike rack (Draft Master) this summer on vacation with this hitch. Another tip is to wash the under body before working on it as to lessen the dirt around the working area. 534228

Love the hitch. Excellent quality. Does the job perfectly. Currently using it for a bicycle rack. With the hitch in place, I have to be careful when going in and out of my driveway (slightly inclined up toward the garage) to avoid having it scratch on the curb. If there's too much load (people/cargo) in the rear of the van, it scrapes. Not a complaint about the hitch, per se - the van doesn't have all that much road clearance even without the hitch. I just have to be careful. Not a big deal. The installation instructions could have been more helpful. The first step is: "Remove underbody panel", but says nothing about how to do that. I realize that each vehicle will be different, but the combination of metal hex-screws, plastic phillips-head screws, and funky plastic-cap supports was initially a head-scratcher. I had to look up how to do it on youtube. Would be good to add some basic info in the instructions on all of the things needed to do to remove the underbody panel. The second step is "lower exhaust assembly for ease of installation". I did not find the diagram for removing the rubber isolator to be clear at all. After trying for a few minutes I gave up out of fear that I would break it. I was able to install the hitch without lowering the exhaust. It's more cumbersome, but hardly impossible. After that, installation was pretty straightforward. 534041

Everything was excellent - right down to my call to the customer service agent who explained the differences in the trailer hitches for my Sienna Van. I watched the installation video a few times and then a friend helped me install the hitch with no issues. The only thing I didn't have was an extension bar for my ratchet set. I had a 3 inch extension, but in order to clear the exhaust pipe on the right side of the van you'll need a about an 8-10 inch extension bar. The video even shows the mechanic using a longer extension bar so no fault of e-trailer. Total install time was about an hour...great product and no issues. 534224

Just like the wiring kit I purchased from ETrailer.com, the video instructions were great and the part fit perfectly to my van. I was able to haul alot of stuff from MD to NC and back with no problems. Be prepared to do some prep work if you've never had a hitch attached to your van. I have a 2005 Sienna XLE which already has the threaded holes in the frame for the hitch to attach to. I spent more time (several hours) cleaning out the 8 years of dirt, grime, and rust from the threads in the frame than actually installing the hitch. I recommend making sure the bolts run all the way up through the holes before trying to install the hitch. Also, although the hitch is attached as close as possible to the van, you must be careful going over steep driveway entrances or taller speedbumps as I have bottomed out a couple of times since installing the hitch, even without the trailer attached. 534337

The hitch appears to be well made and attractive (glossy black paint), although it is fairly well hidden under the bumper. It arrived in less than 1 week (free shipping). The holes lined up perfectly on my 2011 Sienna. The installation instructions and video are accurate. However, if your Sienna has a plastic cover over the luggage well, it will take you much longer than 40 minutes to install. 40min is about right for the hitch alone (as shown in the video). If you have the plastic cover, it takes about 20 min to get off, including figuring out all the clips and screw locations. Cutting the cover is very easy using a razor utility knife, and the diagram is easy to follow. The difficult part is positioning the plastic cover between the Sienna body and the hitch, while lifting the hitch into place and installing the bolts. It is like rubbing your tummy, patting your head, and hopping on one foot. After about 10 min of struggling, I decided to rotate the plastic cover 90 deg. The part that normally extends toward passenger side wheel was now pointing straight toward the engine. This stressed the newly cut opening a little, but it gave me room to access the 3 bolts that hold the driver’s side of the hitch to the Sienna frame. Once I had started the bolts on both sides, I fully torqued the bolts on the driver’s side. With the passenger’s side bolts installed about half way, I rotated the plastic cover back into place, and then torqued the passenger side bolts. Note: with the plastic cover in place, the passenger side bolts are accessible, but the driver’s side bolts are hidden. Overall it took about 2 hours on the floor in my garage because of the complication of the sandwiched plastic cover. It was still worth the effort. My Toyota dealer wanted $800 in install a hitch. Make sure you use a torque wrench! I tighten my bolts with a 3/8” socket wrench, but when I used the torque wrench, I was surprised how much more I needed to tighten them to meet the specified torque. 534408

2013 Toyota Sienna

Very happy with the hitch and the ease of installation onto my 2013 sienna. I don't have a lift, but our driveway has a small dropoff at the end, so backing it within a few feet of the end gave me a couple more feet of clearance to work with. Even then, it was pretty cramped and maneuvering the 40lb hitch into place did require some patience. Overall it probably took me closer to 2 hours total, but everything basically went exactly as the instructions and the video showed. I used tin snips instead of a rotary tool to cut the plastic undercoating, and that produced just as nice of an edge. I also needed to get a 10" extension for my socket wrench (which I think the instructions do say you need) to get at some of the nuts. I didn't have a torque wrench, so "get a torque wrench and properly retighten all the nuts" is on my "someday" list of things to do.The mounted hitch doesn't interfere with anything during normal city driving (my wife hasn't complained about it on her daily commute getting the kids to and from school)Mounted a "Thule Apex Swing 4 Bike Hitch Rack" onto it, drove some bikes up to camp and back, everything held up just fine. Even with the rack loaded and swung out to the side, which should put quite a bit of torque on the hitch joint, the hitch never seemed to be under strain.I have to say that the etrailer videos showing how to mount it basically sold me. Very smart on their part! 534365

2012 Chevrolet Silverado 3500

This fit my 2014 Toyota Sienna perfectly. Understand I would never tow 3500 lbs with this van. It does NOT have a rear axle and just isn't designed for this type of load. Besides, you may know that the formula for calculating these load ratings was changed a few years ago. I think the new, higher, load ratings are misleading. In fairness I am more concerned about any tongue weight than the towing/pulling weight. That being said, I am going to use a cargo carrier/basket or pull a very small trailer (1100 lbs or less). This hitch receiver just slid right in to my van. It is necessary to cut a hole in the underbody guard (splash shield). The instructions say you need to use a six inch extension on a torque wrench and drop the exhaust for access. I used a 12 inch extension and had no problem running it next to the tailpipe. The passenger side of the receiver fits above the tailpipe. The driver side fits under the splash guard (hence the need to cut a hole). The instructions indicate 50 minutes for a DIY installation, which was accurate for me, but I took my time and had children distracting me and kept running for tools. My van had stickers covering the welded nuts, so they were very nice and clean, but if you have any dirt built up, it can be challenging to find exactly where the holes are (there are other drain plugs and things under there. both my wife and I tried to take out one of the plugs.)Another FYI, the instructions point out that you need a 19mm socket for the actual receiver bolts, but you also need a 10mm or a #2 Philips to remove the splash guard and something to pop off the retainers. The guard is very easy to cut through, but I used a reciprocating saw. Finally, understanding that I won't be towing much weight, I didn't picture a very heavy duty receiver, but this item is very well built and I think it far exceeds the towing capacity of the van. Again, based on how well the hitch receiver is installed and how heavy duty it is, the towing weight will not be a problem. The limiting factor is the the tongue weight capacity of the Toyota Sienna. 534042

2010 Toyota Sienna

After I ordered it, I was somewhat worried about the possibility I may have ordered the wrong year. This was because the web based ordering process was slightly cumbersome and did not make it clear in the cart that the product I placed there was definitely for a 2004 Toyota Sienna. However, it arrived the day after I ordered it! Prior reviews are correct that the packing was lacking as the hitch is simply in a cardboard box (with the accessory items taped to the bar). So the paint was scrapped off in a couple small places where the box had been slightly torn. In one spot, there was already rust appearing where the paint had been scraped. But overall, the hitch looked great. Instructions in the box were somewhat lacking, but the etrailer installation videos were spot on and made the process very simple. I had some trouble cleaning the nut holes under the van and wish I had been given one extra bolt. I had to cut a groove in one of the bolts to create a self-tapping bolt because the threads in the nut became fouled. (I did not have a tapping tool to fit the thread--if you do, then I strongly recommend you clean out the nuts with your tapping tool after you clean it with WD-40 and a wire brush.) My trouble would probably only happen 1 in 10,000 times. Hitch fit perfectly on my Sienna. The harness installation was as quick and easy as the video demonstrated. Thank you etrailer for your excellent video installation demos! They made all the difference and made the process mostly enjoyable. The final product looks fantastic on the van. I particulalry like the curve of the bar fitting underneath the bumper--perfect. Well worth the price. I bought it from etrailer and installed it myself at half the price the Toyota dealer wanted for just the part! I never found out how much they wanted for installation. Thank you etrailer. 534453

2012 Toyota Sienna

I purchased this for my 2012 Toyota Sienna. Instructions from etrailer.com were very good and the product arrived in a couple of days. I did not loosen the exhaust system and just worked around it (make sure the tailpipe is cool). Also, I would recommend chocking the wheels for safety. The clearance was definitely low at the back and sometimes challenging, especially when trying to read the torque wrench. I used wood blocks to support one side of the hitch while I bolted the other in place. I finished in about 2 hours and the hitch looks great and is solidly in place. I tested it with a bike rack and drove it for about 60 miles with no rattling or loosening of the rack. 534319

I have to say I am still amazed at how well this hitch just snugged right up under my Sienna. Honestly, it looks custom made, and in a way it was. I was able to do the vast majority of the install on my own, at the very end I asked my wife to hold back the tailpipe so I could do the final snug down of the bolts on that side. I work slow and I was still done in well under an hour. The hitch itself is very well made and finished. I would recommend this to anyone in the same circumstances without reservation. 534301

2013 Toyota Sienna

The finish on the hitch was very good. Only some of the very edges of the plate material used on either side of the hitch showed some steel. As a precautionary measure, I spray painted an additional coat of Rustolium paint. This final coat went on very well over the existing finish. The hitch fit well. Pay close attention to the video when they take the plastic undercover off. For the Toyota Sienna, there are three distinct types of fasteners. The bolt types are obvious to take off, but the other two are not. One unscrews and the other has a white center part that pops out allowing the remainder of the plastic rivet to come out. Also, the placement of the cut-out slot in the plastic under-panel shown on the video and in the instructions is slightly off for the 2013 Sienna. I think that it should be moved about 1/2 inch toward the driver side of the van to be more in line with the hitch support arm.One last note, which may be obvious to some, is to realize that once you tighten the hitch in place, there is no room above the hitch to allow you to move the plastic under-panel around for alignment. Therefore, as recommended, leave as much slack in the mounting bolts as possible to give yourself the most room between the hitch and the van to maneuver the plastic cover in place for fastening. 534371

I gave the hitch 3 stars as I think the product will be good. I knocked it down on the rating since the video that explains how to attach it to your car states that the average person can do it in 50 minutes. If you own a minivan, this is false. You have to drop the plastic under carriage, lower the exhaust, lay on your back and hoist a 60 pound hitch up under the van in a very snug fit. After 2 of us working for 4 hours we reassembled everything and paid the $80 to have it installed locally. I’d just start out at your local hitch dealer and save the time and frustration. Also as in a previous review the box came open. Fortunately all of my items were still there. 559021

Product shipped on time and arrived as expected. I’m fairly handy with tools but am by no means a “car guy” and prefer to pay others for any work on my vehicles. That said, this was extremely straightforward to install. Between the single page of instructions and the video on the website, the install went smoothly. I did the whole thing from my garage floor without a lift or jacks. It took me approximately two hours to complete which included demounting the underbody trim panel twice to get the right fit. Definitely would have been faster on a lift but is certainly not difficult without one. 669939

I have a 2016 sienna. The span between both flanges must not have been to spec because I couldn’t get one of the bolts in because it was too tight with the slot (closest to driver). I tried to torque it in and ended up finally stripping the bolt and now I can’t get it out. I have 5 bolts in and I’m using this for a bike rack so it will be okay but I’m going to see if the dealer can fix the stripped bolt/hole. I’m beyond mad. I don’t have a ton of time and definitely don’t want to spend a Saturday dealing with this. 667136

Comments

When a trailer hitch is constructed, the manufacturer uses softer steel in the side plates as opposed to the harder steel used in the crossbar and receiver tube. This allows the hitch to flex along with the vehicle to a certain degree. This flexibility can also allow the hitch to get slightly bent out of position during shipping and handling, which explains why you had one bolt hole not matching up. The good news is that its very easy to fix this if you know a few tricks as shown in the linked article.

I consider myself a novice/intermediate mechanic and I was able to install the hitch in under 1 hour. The installation video from etrailer was very helpful and I was actually able to alter the underbody panel without removing it, I also didn’t remove the exhaust hanger and was able to work around the tailpipe with very little trouble. Overall this experience went very well. Good Info from the website that helped make my decision to buy this hitch, great price, fast free shipping and the hitch appears to be solid and high quality. Perfect solution for using my hitch mounted bike rack. 656879

I read past reviews, and hoped that the safety chain holes would have been modified to be larger and the front of the receiver tube to have been welded closed to stop debris from clogging it up. A correct tap offered at a fair price would be a real nice addition to have available too. (one stop shopping). The product labels fell off when I was installing the hitch,a better glue, or a full wrap around maybe? A good product at a fair price. Great service too. I have ordered several items over the past few years and I will shop again. Best company that I have dealt with on the net. etrailer does it right! 577284

The width for the bolt holes was a little off by maybe 4mm, but was able to pry it into place with a small crowbar. I haven’t towed anything with it yet, but seems pretty solid 557042

Great customer service helping me order all the right components. Items arrived promptly and were installed by me and my neighbor the next day. The videos we quite helpful that outlined clearly the key steps and how to install. Definitely worth doing myself and the hitch turned out great. 556848

The hitch is great. Great price, "installation" took me about 17 minutes. I'm not experience, nor am I particularly good with nuts and bolts, but I was able to bolt the 6 bolts into my 2005 Toyota Sienna and secure the hitch without a lift or ramps or anything, just laying on the cardboard box it came in on my driveway. It's kinda heavy by yourself, but I read of someone else who rested one end on the muffler while securing the other. This worked great for me. Didn't even have to disconnect the muffler hanger to get the bolts in...simply took a prybar and wedged it in to pull the tailpipe about 1 or 2 inches out of the way. I even used a basketball to wedge under the center of the hitch so I didn't have to constantly hold it up and struggle with the socket wrench and first bolt in. **Now, the PREPARATION of my own 13 yr old van's rusty bolt holes was another story...what a pain, took me 2 hours!!! I used WD-40 and a battery terminal wire brush several times in each of the 6 holes, and then worked the bolt in (before I brought the hitch under...just bolts alone...drive them in all the way like the directions say.) This took some time and some muscle, but what can I say, the van had 13 yrs of corrosion worked in there. The etrailer.com videos helped, so watch those and read the directions. 547637

As one would expect, the hitch came to me in perfect condition. The welds are very good and the coating seems tough and consistent. All hardware was included but look closely as it is packaged deep inside the packaging on the hitch. I thought mine was not there (I was wrong) and etrailer sent me another set very fast (sorry etrailer my mistake). I must say etrailer provided the best experience I have ever received from an online retailer. Product, service, price all great; nothing more needs to be said. 533974

I was pleased with the delivery time. I ordered on a Thursday and it arrived the following Tuesday, a day earlier than scheduled. The receiver was pretty easy to install thanks to the video provided by etrailer on their website. I just jacked the back of the van up and laid under it to install. Took me about 20-30 minutes. Have something to clean out the threads before you start to make the bolts go in easy. Ready to hook up the bike rack now! 533972

This trailer hitch showed up a few days earlier than I expected! I appreciated the video tutorials on you tube. My only complaint about the video is that it would be nice to have a more realistic video made for people actually doing this at home. I don't have a lift at my house. So going through the process laying on your back in the driveway would have been nice to see. My bolts were waaaaay harder to get in than the video made it seem even after lots of lubing and cleaning. The exhaust hanger was also way harder to get on and off laying on the ground with a screwdriver than the video made it seem. The video was very clear and i could see what was going on and that was great. I think you should make it a practice of pointing out the difficulties that people might encounter while doing this themselves. 533970

Excellent as advertised. Shipped in the time frame with no issues. I installed the hitch in thirty minutes without any issues as per the instructions that come with the hitch. Of note, however, is the fact that you need a torque wrench, good thing I have one! Overall , A great choice! 533966

If you wanted to do some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. • Hidden Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2012 Toyota Sienna
  • We have an etrailer hitch that does fit your 2012 Toyota Sienna and has a totally concealed crosstube for better ground clearance but it's not the # E98837 you referenced. Instead you'd want the part # e98853 and you'd be set. I attached a picture of what this hitch looks like installed as well as an install video for you to check out too.

  • Does the 2019 Toyota Sienna XLE have Tow Prep Package
  • Based on our research it looks like the factory towing package for the 2019 Toyota Sienna consists of an engine oil cooler along with a heavy-duty radiator and fan and is standard for the XLE model like what you have. With the tow package the Sienna XLE has a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds. For a trailer hitch I recommend the etrailer.com Class III Hitch # e98837. This custom hitch is confirmed to fit your vehicle and will use existing holes in its frame for a no-drill installation....

  • Recommended Tow Dolly for 2007 Toyota Prius behind 2017 Toyota Sienna
  • The tongue weight of a tow dolly is minimal because it has the weight of the front of the tow vehicle across the axle. So you will have almost no tongue weight when using the Roadmaster Tow Dolly with Electric Brakes - 4,250 lbs # RM-2050-1 or # RM-2050-1. You will simply need to account for the towing weight of the 545 lb # RM-2050-1 or the 620 lb # RM-2000-1 along with the 2,932 lbs curb weight of your 2007 Toyota Prius.
