Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2000 Volkswagen Beetle - Hidden Hitch

Today in our 2000 Volkswagen Beetle, we'll be installing hinge hitch Part #60902. Now, before we begin our installation, here are a few measurements to help you when selecting accessories such as a bike rack or a cargo carrier. From the center of the hinge hitch hold to the outer most part of the bumper is 5.5 inches. From the top of the receiver to the ground is 7.25 inches. Now, let's go ahead with our install. To begin our installation, underneath the vehicle here, we'll need to remove the exhaust hangar bracket.

We'll then need to remove the clip holding the exhaust shield on the vehicle. Now this vehicle is equip with an aftermarket exhaust so your exhaust may look slightly different. We'll now go ahead and bring the exhaust hangar bracket down and bring it out of the way allowing our heat shield to come down. Here on the passenger side, our mounting location will be the toe hook. There is a custom bracket included with the trailer hitch as seen here.

It will slide in above the toe hook and allow us to put the hitch in place and run a bolt through the hitch with our conical tooth washer making sure that the teeth of the washer face the hitch and then in to the bracket. We'll do this for both mounting points here on the passenger side. This will help us to locate and drill the holes for our driver side mounting locations as you can see here. We'll need to mark and drill three holes in our underbody panel here on the driver side. After drilling the two holes in the top of our trunk pan here, we'll go ahead and undo the bolts on the passenger side to again allow the hitch to hang lose.

We'll use the other bracket included with our hitch in the trunk pan in our cargo area, this bracket will act as further support for our trailer hitch. With the bracket in place, we'll then insert our carriage bolt where we can then tread our nut and washers underneath the vehicle. We'll drill our third hole and before reinstalling our passenger side hardware, we'll insert our block here at the spare tire well. We'll need to use the half inch spacer block between the hitch and the spare tire well itself where we can then use another spacer block and thereafter applying a silicon will take our carriage bolt and run it through from the inside our spare tire well out and through the hitch. We can then attach the washer and the nut.

We can then move to the passenger side where we'll reinstall our hardware. With all our hardware in place, we'll go ahead and tighten it down and torque it to specification as indicated in the instructions. We can then go ahead and reinstall our exhaust shield and our muffler hanger bracket. And that will do it for the installation of Part # 60902 on our 2000 Volkswagen Beetle.

Works very good on my 2002 VW Beetle 12685

I had to bend the verticle bracket so it would fit between the spare tire well and heat shroud bracket. I was not able to install the 1/2 inch square spacer but used washers to shim the space which was less than 1/2 inch. Overall, installation turned out pretty good. True, installation should take only 30-40 minutes but I had alignment problems from the start. Bending the verticle bracket corrected all problems. Next, I'll see how easy the wiring installation goes. 16457

Installed on 2008 beetle convertible. Fit is perfect. Would highly recommend this product. I would recommend buying a 1/2 inch longer bolt for the right side, back bolt. It just makes it easier to get into place and doesn't hit anything when installed. Don't use any longer bolt in the other nut. (the one towards the front of the car) When installing the shim, it is a tight fit, use a flat bar and crowbar to get it into place. Makes a nice tight installation. 126066

Highly recomend this hitch Installation was a bit tricky due to the V.W. exhaust system. Hardware used to support the heat shield difficult to remove and reuse. Suggest purchase of new hardware prior to installation. The hitch and mounting hardware was great to work with. Installation was a snap. Very satisfied with reliability and LOOKS GREAT. 1162

The hitch fit perfect. I installed it in a 2000 New Beetle and am very happy with it. I did use longer bolts to ease the installation. Would recommend highly. 93007

  • Ball Mount For 1-1/4 Inch Hidden Hitch On a 2002 VW Beetle with 4 Inch Rise
  • The Hidden Hitch Class I 1-1/4 Inch Hitch, part # 60902, is the hitch that fits the 2002 Volkswagen New Beetle. It uses the Draw-Tite Ball Mount, part # 3594, that has a 4 inch rise. This ball mount comes with a pin and clip. On Class I hitches you have to use the ball mount that is recommended for that particular hitch. The # 3594 ball mount uses a hitch ball with a 3/4 shank diameter. Depending on the coupler size on your trailer you will need either the Tow Ready 1-7/8 Inch Hitch...

  • What is the Correct Ball Mount for a 2007 Volkswagen new Beetle
  • The correct ball mount for any Class I or Class II trailer hitch should be listed in the hitch instructions from the manufacturer. You have to use the ball mount the hitch manufacturer states because it is the optimal option for that hitch and vehicle combination. For Draw-Tite hitch # 24679, the correct ball mount is # 3593 and you can use pin and clip # PC2. For Curt hitch # 11066 the correct ball mount is # C45510. However, the Curt hitch and Hidden Hitch # 60902 come with the correct...

  • Would Bikes and Bike Rack Obstruct Vision of Tail Lights on a 2007 VW Beetle
  • To determine whether or not a hitch is recommended for your vehicle I would recommend you check your owners manual to see if there are any restrictions on installing a hitch. While you are there you should also check to see if there are any tongue weight restrictions if a hitch is installed. The Hidden Hitch # 60902 that you referenced is confirmed to fit your 2007 Volkswagen New Beetle and would do well to carry a 2-bike rack. I attached installation instructions for this product for...

  • With the Thule Passage 2 Bike Rack Fit on a 2009 Volkswagen Beetle
  • Yes, the Thule Passage 2 Bike Rack, # TH910XT, will fit on your 2009 Volkswagen Beetle. The lower arm of the bike rack will rest on the top of your bumper and the straps will attach to the top and bottom edges of your rear hatch. I would recommend using the Thule Adapter Bar, # TH982XT, for your female cruiser bike that does not have a straight bar. The adapter bar will secure to the handle bars and seat of your bike and keep your bike level while driving. Mounting your bike without...

  • Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2002 Volkswagen Beetle Turbo
  • The only real difference between the two hitches you referenced is that the Draw Tite # 24679 does not come with a ball mount, whereas the Hidden Hitch # 60902 does come with one. Since all you need a hitch for is to carry a bike rack the Draw Tite would be a better option. The bike rack I would recommend is the Swagman XTC2 Bike Rack part # S64670. This rack will carry your two bikes easily and since it is a platform rack the style of frame you have won't matter or require you to...

  • Hitch Recommendation for a 2006 Volkswagen New Beetle TDI
  • I do have a solution for you, but the Hidden Hitch # 60294 that you referenced is only confirmed to fit 2012-2013 Beetles so right away its not going to work for you since you have a 2006. I spoke with my contact at Hidden Hitch and he informed me that the Hidden Hitch # 60902 will work on your 2006 Volkswagen New Beetle TDI. I attached an install video and installation instructions for this product for you to check out also. This product comes with a ball mount and a hitch pin and...
