Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2009 Toyota Prius - Draw-Tite

Speaker 1: Today on our 2009 Toyota Prius, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Draw-Tite Class 1 custom-fit trailer hitch receiver, part no: 24808.So here's what our hitch is going to look like. The cross-tube is going to sit right below our bumper and it is going to be visible, but the main part we're going to see is that receiver tube sticking out. Now it is going to offer us a 1-1/4" by 1-1/4" opening, which is going to be great for bike racks or cargo carriers so we can add some accessories to the back of our Prius. The way we're going to mount all those accessories is to the hitch-pin hole here on the side. It is going to accept a standard 1/2" pin and clip. While these aren't included in the kit, you can pick 'em here at etrailer.com. As far as the safety chain connection points go, it's going to be a loop-style welded to the bottom of the receiver tube.

As you can see, we're going to have plenty of room to get most sized hooks on or off.As far as the weight capacity goes, our hitch is going to have a 200 lb tongue weight, which is maximum downward force at the receiver tube. It's also going to have a 2,000 lb gross trailer weight rating, which is the amount it can pull including the trailer and everything we have loaded on it. So with those numbers in mind, I always suggest you check your Prius's owner's manual and never exceed the manufacturers recommended weight. If you do plan on doing some light-duty towing, we do have specific drawbars that are designed for this hitch available here at etrailer.com.I'd like to give you a few measurements. These are going to help out when you're looking for accessories for your new hitch, such as a bike rack or a cargo carrier. From the center hitch-pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper, it's going to be right about 1-1/2".

This measurement is going to come in handy when you're looking at folding accessories to make sure you have adequate clearance between the back bumper and the accessory itself. From the ground to the inside top edge of the receiver tube opening is going to be right about 11-3/4". That measurement I definitely would recommend a cargo carrier or bike-rack with a raised shank to give us that little bit extra ground clearance. Now, we've seen what our hitch looks like, and gone over some of the features, let's show you how to get it installed. To begin our installation, we're going to want to come underneath the back of our Prius, and we're going to have to remove this plastic panel that's on the passenger's side. Now, we're going to have a few plastic push-pins towards the back.

You can go ahead and pop those out. You'll notice that it has small ridges around it. You're going to want to come underneath the center section and pop that section out first, which is going to take the tension off of the clip. Then we can pull the rest of the push-pin out. If you try to pop out the whole thing at once without releasing that tension, most likely the clip will break. Now, we're going to have a few screws that are also holding it in place.

Towards the very outside edge, the panel will have one here. If we follow that back and come up right by these lines we'll have another one that's holding it in place. Then finally, towards the center of our trunk pin, there will be another one here. In our application ours has broken off. So we're just going to pull down on the panel. There's a little retaining nut on the inside that's going to hold it to the stud. For the other two, we'll take a 10 mm socket, and we'll unthread the screws. With all the fasteners removed we can go ahead and pull this panel out and we can set it aside. Now on each side of the frame rail towards the back we're going to have these recovery hooks here. They'll be held on by two bolts. We're going to grab a 14 mm socket and we're going to pull those bolts out. We're going to have another hook on the passenger side frame rail, so we'll pull that one out as well, and we're not going to be reinstalling these.Even though there is bolts inside these weld nuts in the frame, it's always a good idea to clean out the threads. If you can take a little bit of spray lubricant, spray it inside the hole. Then take a nylon tube brush and just run it in and out and make sure the threads are nice and clean. Now if you need one of these tube brushes, you can pick one up here at etrailer.com. We're going to repeat that for all the remaining holes. Now it's always a good idea to get an extra set of hands. We're going to lift our hitch up, and we'll line up the holes in our hitch with the holes in our frame that we took those tow-hooks out. I'm going to take one of the bolts, and a conical-tooth washer. Make sure that those teeth in the washer are facing up towards the hitch. I'm just going to put one in on each side to make sure that it holds the hitch up. Then we can put the rest of our hardware in. Again, you just want to make sure that those teeth are facing up towards the hitch. Now we can come back with the 17 mm socket and we're going to snug up all of our hardware. Now I'm going to come back with a torque wrench. I'm going to torque all my hardware down with the specified amount in the instructions. You want to make sure you do that for all the remaining hardware. In order to get our panel back in place, we are going to have to trim it. Now they do give you a guide in the instructions, and I went ahead and marked out the area that we're going to need to cut. This little loop, kind of oval hole was where our tow-hook was coming out. We're going to want to cut that section straight back towards the back of the panel so there's going to be a nice little relief. Now I'm going to be using a pair of tin snips to cut it out. You can use whatever you have available, rotary tool, tin snips, or just a sharp utility knife, because it is just plastic. Just want to make sure that you stay far enough away from the mounting holes so we can still get our push-pins back in. We can always come back and trim a little bit more if need be, but we can always test-fit it to make sure it does fit.So we test-fit our panel and the section is wide enough to go around our hitch, but we did find that we need to extend this back section out a little bit. So we'll just come in and we're just going to make another little relief cut going straight back. No more than a couple of inches and it should be fine to pass our hitch through. Then we just come from the back side, slide our panel in place and line up all of our hardware. The easiest way to keep it up in place, is you just come back to that stud. We can push that nut back in place or thread it back in if it's still on there. Then we can put our hardware back in place. Then we can push the push-pins back in place as well. With the push-pins they're going to come out the same way they went in. You're going to want to push the outer area in first, up through the panel, then push in on the center to lock it down. That'll finish up your look at the Draw-Tite Class 1 custom-fit trailer hitch receiver, part no: 24808, on our 2009 Toyota Prius.

Great hitch so far. etrailer is way better for buying than that other online site. It's worth the look at etrailer before you buy anywhere else. The customer service is excellent and the instructions for this hitch was perfect for our Prius. I'm alway impressed by the amount of good instructions and tips etrailer gives. We usually buy CURT but this is a good hitch so far. Installation was a breeze compared to getting the plastic cover off the Prius. We bought 3 trailers hitches from etrailer and was never disappointed. 575819

got it, installed it - it was a good fit but again, i am just a genius too in installing stuff - looks good, BUT I HAVE NOT USED IT EVEN ONCE in a year since I have bought it. Therefore, I can comment on if it will perform well or not - makes me wonder why I bought it in the first place. 565606

This is the second hitch I have purchased etrailer.com and installed myself. In each case the hitch arrived quickly and was easy to install. In both cases, I also used the video installation instructions provided on etrailer.com's website. Finally, both hitches were the best priced I could find on the Internet. When and if I need another hitch, I will visit etrailer.com again. 543882

Well, The videos I reviewed prior to installation had an installation time of 1 to 1 1/2 hours. I laid out all the required tools, including a 2x4 in case the holes were off. I removed the plastic cover, removed the tow hooks, installed the hitch receiver and torqued it in less then 1/2 hour. The holes lined up perfect so I didn't have to pry the receiver with the 2x4. Besides extending the slot in the plastic cover to the rear, I also had to cut about 1 inch forward. Still was completed in less then 1 hour. This was truely a great product. Made well and everything lined up perfect. It was actually much easier then I ever thought it would be. Ron 74432

Excellent hitch! Very well made and easy to install. Don't get lazy and not reinstall the plastic cover panel on the driver's side of your Prius! It is there for a good reason! If you pay close attention when you remove the panel it will make it much easier to reinstall. A couple of hints: 1. Be careful when removing the two plastic rivets that attach to the bumper cover so that they can be reused. 2. Trim the tow hook slot about 1" to 1.5" forward of the hook in addition to the area indicated in the instructions. It took me about an hour and a half total on the installation most of which was spent on the cover panel. Follow my suggestions above and you can do it in half that time 6003

The product fit my Prius, as advertised. It has done a super job coupled with a Thule 2 bike tray rack. As my car is getting on in years I needed a friend with a hammer drill to get the old bolts off but the rack mounted quickly after that and I have been happy with it. 550485

Overall, I'm Very Happy with this purchase! The hitch fit-exactly, & (according to my installer) bolted-on in no-time, just followed the well-written, accurate directions. However, I DID have a small problem, the hitch was too close to my tailpipe (on '07 Toyota Prius) & after driving a few miles, I had excessive noise & vibration, from the tailpipe hitting against the metal receiver :( I had to take it back to the auto shop where I had it installed, & they had to grind-off some of the edge of my tailpipe, in order to fix this problem. I had purchased a similar model (from etrailer.com) for my '98 Toyota Avalon, & it fit perfectly! :) - with no modification needed. Otherwise, I was/am extremely satisfied with my purchase & experience! . . Great Customer Support from etrailer, & exceptionally fast & dependable delivery & processing . . thanks!! Will definitely order from you again, & recommend to others!! 62784

Toyota Prius

This arrived just a few days after ordering, earlier than I expected. And, I had forgotten to add a wiring harness when I ordered, but a phone call got one in, so they both shipped free. Very pleasant experience dealing with trailer, again. The hitch is a cinch to install. The most difficult part is jacking and blocking the Prius so you can get under the rear. Then a cover needs to be removed, easy enough. Take out 4 bolts, put in 4 bolts, and the hitch is installed. The cover could remain off. If returned, it needs needs a hole enlarged where the hitch passes through. The best way to do this would be to fit it before installing the hitch, and put hitch through hole, so you don't need to extend the hole to the rim of the cover, which is not as well supported if the rim is cut. But who has such foresight? I cut it to the rim, and everything seems OK. The product could be improved by describing this, and providing a printed template to show just what needed trimming for a perfect fit. It felt as if they did not expect to put the cover back on. It probably exists either for sound deadening or aerodynamics, both of which are worth the trouble of replacing it (though the hitch is going to mess up under car aero some, anyway). 160893

Shipping was quick. Install was not bad. The plastic pan came off easily and I enlarged the hole with a jig saw. I cut about 1-1/2" toward the driver and another 1" to the driver side. It needed another 1/2" toward the rear end, once I had it reinstalled, but I cut that with a utility knife. I didn't use a jack to lift it. I balanced it on two 4x4s to start the passenger-side bolts. Then I lifted the other side with a 4x4 block on end. That got it close enough that I could lift it the last bit and start the driver-side bolts. Took about a half hour, but I work slowly. 84885

Having used the trailer wiring and hitch a few times over the past year, I am quite satisfied with both. In the installation of the wiring, I was unprepared in that the process messed with my electronic door locks and I had to get them reprogrammed. Otherwise, no problems. Thanks again!

Great trailer hitch and Yakima bike rack combo from etrailer. Fast Shipping! Used on a 4 hour each way vacation, no problems. Install only took me 45 minutes, clear directions and their most basic hitch seems well protected paint wise. Nice work etrailer, did not think I was going to get away with spending so little for quality hardware! 213557

The holes on the frame are about 1/16" closer together left to right than the threaded holes on the car. You can try to bend them with tools to get them to line up but my solution was to screw in the two left bolts half way, put my foot on the right side of the frame and do a leg press to bend the steel a bit until the holes lined up. Obviously, I needed a helper to get the second pair of bolts started. There is enough flexibility in the steel that once started, they turned with little friction. Would have been nice if they lined up perfectly, but oh well. 143358

Another excellent product from etrailer. Super easy installation with paper instruction and video by etrailer. Took me 30 minutes to install. Like other have said, cutting the plastic under tray took the longest time. Highly recommended. 100057

So, let's start with the good. Etrailer packed the item well. It wasn't just thrown in a box like the last hitch I ordered. Now the bad. This hitch is very poor quality. The hitch pin is not straight or square, so anything I put in it is going to be off to one side. Also, the hitch pin plate and chain clip are also welded crooked. Lastly, they painted over the welding tailings and whatever else was on this rack when coated. All they had to do was simply wipe it off before painting. It looks like it has boils all over. In the end, I think whoever assembled this rack was either intoxicated, or just didn't care. Needless to say, I will never buy a drawtite product again due to low quality. I wish return shipping didn't cost so much, because I would love to return this piece of... junk! See my pics of the issues. I hope this helps others in their decision to not by this rack, and be careful buying a rack online. 110907

Purchased this Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch 24808 for our 2005 Toyota Prius, to use with platform style Saris Freedom SuperClamp 2 bike rack. My husband installed this in about 30 minutes, with no problems. We found that watching both the videos at etrailer.com for installation on the 2005 and 2008 Prius models (same hitch model #) were helpful prior to installation. The information on etrailer.com was great for helping me choose the right hitch for our 2005 Prius 150319

installed perfect on my 2009 prius, great product for those who buy this there is a stop tab in the hitch so not just any hitch will work it has to be the same rating or the lock pin falls short of matching my wife's yaris hitch works perfect thanks etrailer! 505802

Comments

The obstruction you speak of is a stop or a punch thats intentionally placed in the receiver tube that prevents higher-rated Class ll accessories from being used. Draw-Tite does this with their Class I hitches as a safety measure to prevent the hitch from being accidentally overloaded. The stop or punch is designed to prevent a Class II rated accessory from being slid into the receiver far enough for the hitch pin holes to line up.

Fit like a glove as advertised and looks great however the hole in the hitch receiver is shallow and I had to file down the back of my hitch for it to fit. 484640

Comments

The stop that you referred to is intentionally punched or welded into some Class I trailer hitches to prevent higher rated Class II hitch mounted accessories from being used. This is done as a safety measure to prevent the hitch from possibly being overloaded.

Good service and quick shipping. The hitch did show up bent on one end, as many have commented here. Had to use a car Jack and 2x4 to straighten it out. Looks like it happened in transit. The hitch comes lose of the stapled cardboard and is likely dropped on its end in the shipping process. After that, install was simple. 420985

Just had my trailer hitch installed by my local service station because they have a lift and all the necessary tools. It took less than 30 minutes. I'm about to go get a bike rack and start using the hitch. BTW, it's installed on a 2004 Prius. Research, ordering and delivery from etrailer.com was really good. I'm about to recommend them to a friend. 402152

Ask the Experts about this Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch
Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Curt 18110 compared to 18140
  • First lets talk about a hitch for your 2007 Toyota Prius, I would recommend the Draw Tite hitch part # 24808. The reason for this is that Curt recommends you use a stabilizer strap like part # 18050 when you use a non-supported load on the hitch like a cargo carrier. Draw Tite doesn't have that requirement so I think you would be happier with the # 24808. Now the differences between the Curt Cargo Carriers part # C18110 and the # C18145 are pretty substantial. I personally like the #...

  • Trailer Hitch Receiver Compatibility With 2 Inch Accessories on a Toyota Prius
  • The Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class I - 1-1/4" # 24808 is a confirmed fit for 2004 through 2009 Toyota Prius models. There is not a 2 inch option for any of these vehicles because they aren't rated for towing or carrying the capacity of a 2 inch receiver. The manufacturers are attempting to protect users from harming their vehicle by only offering the capacities that are appropriate in the smaller size hitch receiver opening. You can use a hitch adapter...

  • Which Trailer Hitch to Use for Carrying a Cargo Carrier on a 2008 Toyota Prius
  • All of the trailer hitches for the 2008 Toyota Prius are going to basically install the same and appear the same once installed. I apologize for any confusion on whether or not the crosstube will be visible. For carrying a cargo carrier the best hitch available will be the Draw Tite part # 24808. This carrier does not require the use of a stabilizer strap like the Curt option does and does not include a ball mount that you wouldn't need like the Hidden Hitch does. The part # C18145 is...

  • What Hitch and Wiring is Need for a 2007 Toyota Prius and How do I Install
  • We carry 2 hitches for your 2007 Toyota Prius, part # 24808 and # 11468. I have included links to these hitches and their instructions below. We also have a video of one of these hitches being installed on a 2006 Toyota Prius. Your 2007 Prius can be wired for towing a trailer, but there is not a plug and play type harness available for it. You will need to locate the tail light wires in the trunk, identifying them with a circuit tester, and then splice the harness into them. There...

  • Trailer Hitch and 2 Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2008 Toyota Prius
  • I would recommend going with the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch, # 24808, on your 2008 Toyota Prius for carrying 2 bikes. We have a video installation for you to review and I have attached installation instructions for you to review. For a bike rack the Thule Doubletrack, # TH9054, would be a great choice. It is designed to work in the Class I hitch recommended above and will provide clearance at the back for going over speed bumps and entering steep drives and parking lots with...

  • Trailer Hitch with 200 lb Tongue Weight Needed for a 2007 Toyota Prius
  • We do have trailer hitches available for your 2007 Toyota Prius that have a 200 lbs Tongue Weight (TW) rating. I recommend going with the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver # 24808 which is a Class I, 1-1/4" hitch receiver which has that 200 lb TW rating that you are asking about. I have attached a video of this trailer hitch being installed on a similar Prius for you to check out. I looked up an online version of the owner's manual for your Prius and on page 344 it states...

  • Expandable Bike Rack Recommendation that Can Fit 1-1/4 inch Hitch When Carrying 2 Bikes
  • We have one solution that will work for you. The Pro Series bike rack # PS63138 is an expandable bike rack that when used as a 4 bike rack will fit a 2 inch hitch, and the 2-bike add on is designed to also fit a 1-1/4 inch hitch so it will fit your Prius with a 1-1/4 inch hitch like the # 24808 installed. Check out the review video I attached for more info on this rack as well.

  • Trailer Hitch for a 2014 Toyota Prius 2
  • Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 24808 fits 2004 to 2009 Toyota Prius models but not a 2014. For a 2014 Prius you can use # 24847. It fits the 2014 Prius 2, 3, and 4 models so it will fit your Prius 2. I have linked a video to the right showing installation for you.

  • Available Trailer Hitch Receivers for 2007 Toyota Prius
  • The Draw-Tite # 24808 and Curt # C11468 are the available hitch receivers for your 2006 Toyota Prius. Both are Class I and have a towing capacity of 2000 lbs. Our most popular hitch for your Prius is the Draw-Tite # 24808. I have included a short installation video for you. In order for a Class II or Class III hitch to be available, the vehicle would have to have a towing capacity that would warrant the higher rated hitch. In this case the frame on the Prius could not handle the...

  • Which Hitch Mounted Bike Racks Can I Use on My 2007 Toyota Prius Receiver Hitch
  • Yes, you will be able to use a Class I bike rack to carry two bikes on the Draw-Tite Class I Trailer Hitch, part # 24808. When selecting a bike rack you need to be sure it is rated for a Class I hitch because Class II accessories will not fit in Class I hitches, the shank will be too long. You will also need to measure the distance between the hitch pin hole and the farthest rear point of the rear bumper once the hitch is installed to determine the best fit for a bike rack on your vehicle. • Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2005 Toyota Prius
  • The Draw Tite hitch part # 24808 would be the correct hitch for your 2005 Toyota Prius. Now since this is a Class I hitch and they can only carry a maximum of 2 bikes on a bike rack your options will be somewhat limited. The Thule Doubletrack part # TH9054 would be a great option. Check out the demo video I attached.

  • Recommendations for Hitch, Roof and Trunk Mount Bike Racks on a 2008 Toyota Prius
  • I agree with your inclination to use receiver hitch mounted bike carrying system. In my opinion these are the safest, easiest and most convenient bike carrying systems available for most vehicles including the 2008 Toyota Prius. Other options would be a trunk mounted bike rack and a roof rack and bike racks. I will make recommendations for all three systems for you to review. The trailer hitch and bike rack I would choose consists of the items listed below . The hitch has the pin and...

  • Options for Carrying a Surfboard and Duffle Bags on a 2006 Toyota Prius
  • You have a few different options for carrying your surfboards and duffle bags on your 2006 Toyota Prius, but the size and weight of your surfboards and duffle bags will determine which options will work best for you. First, I definitely recommend adding a roof rack if you plan on carrying anything on your roof because vehicle roofs were not designed to support much weight. Also, before loading any cargo on a roof rack, you will want to check your owners manual to verify the weight capacity...

  • Recommended Hitch and Small Trailer for 2009 Toyota Prius
  • I'd highly recommend you check your owners manual or with Toyota about using the Prius for towing. I do know that they don't recommend it for certain model years. I'd recommend Draw-Tite part # 24808. If you decide to use the vehicle for towing, you would also need a ball mount and trailer wiring harness like part # 118505. The size trailer ball you need would depend on the trailer you use. The smaller utility trailers would use a 1-7/8 inch diameter ball like part # 19256 or #...

  • Trailer Hitch Mounted Bike Rack Recommendation for 2009 Toyota Prius with Class I, 1-1/4 Inch Hitch
  • Since the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, # 24808, on your 2009 Toyota Prius is a Class I, 1-1/4 hitch, you will need a light weight bike rack that extends out far enough to clear the rear of the vehicle. I recommend the Swagman Trailhead 2 Bike Carrier, # S63360. This is a 2 bike rack that is compatible with a Class I, 1-1/4 inch trailer hitch. It weighs under 30 pounds and can even tilt down to give you more access to the rear of the vehicle. I have included a link to the installation details...
