Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Installation - 2017 Toyota Prius Prime

Speaker 1: Today on this 2017 Toyota Prius Prime, we'll be having a look at and showing you how to install the Draw-Tite class one trailer hitch receiver, part number 24966.Here's what our hitch looks like installed. As you can see, our hitch is tucked up nice and tight behind our fascia. Giving us a nice clean look but yet still being easily accessible for using with any of our accessories. On the side of our receiver, you'll find our half inch diameter hitch pin hole. That we can use with pin and clip to secure any of our hitch mounted accessories. Welded onto the bottom of our receiver opening, we have our rolled steel tubular safety chain loops to hook the safety chain hooks on from our trailer.

These are fairly large opening so we shouldn't have much problem hooking most safety chains onto them. This hitch features a 200 pound max tongue weight rating, which is the amount forcing down. And a 2,000 pound max gross trailer weight rating which is the amount it can pull. You want to make sure you consult with the owners manual of your Prius Prime and not exceed what the vehicle's rated for. Go by whichever number is less. Now what I like about this hitch compared to other options on the market, is the fact that when you're standing behind the vehicle, it's so concealed you can't even tell that the hitch is there.

So this really helps maintain the clean looks on your vehicle. Now for a few measurements to better assist you in choosing any hitch mounted accessory you may need such as a bike rack or a cargo carrier. You're looking at about 12 inches from the ground to the top of the inch and a quarter receiver opening. And about seven inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the rear most part of the back bumper. Now that we've gone over some features, we'll show you how to get it installed. To begin our install, we need to remove these three plastic panels underneath the back of our fascia. In order to remove these panels, we'll have several plastic fasteners just like this one.

The way these work, there's a center section that you can pop out with a flathead screwdriver or a trim panel tool like I'm using. Once you have the center section pulled out, the whole clip can be removed. All of these fasteners are exactly the same.Above our muffler we'll fold this tab back. We have another one here, we'll do the same. Now for our center panel, we have a screw plastic fastener here.

Take a flathead screwdriver, and we can rotate it as we pull down on the panel. And then you can pull the panel down and remove it. Now for our side panel, we have another clip like that. That you can use a flathead screwdriver on as you pull down. Just put light pressure as you pull down. And it'll eventually come loose.Pull this panel out now. And we have one final one on the passenger side. With that loose we can wiggle this out around the exhaust and the fascia. Now going across the top of our fascia, we have a wiring harness that is clipped to the bottom section of our fascia attachment tabs. We'll just grab this and remove it from all these tabs. So once you have them unclipped like this, we'll just work our way across making sure we get all of them on the tabs. You won't be able to see all of them. You'll just have to do it by feel. Now at the bottom edge of our lower fascia section, where it meets the rest of the fascia. We'll find a Phillips screw that we need to remove. We'll have one in each corner. Now we have several of these tabs that hold our fascia in place. There's a section on the back, if you press in, you can start to pull it away. We'll continue working these tabs out all the way across the lower section.Okay once we have all the clips released, we can pull the fascia away. Now we need to remove our bumper beam. We'll have four bolts on each side. We have two at the top and two at the bottom. These are 12 millimeter bolts. Okay once we have all of our hardware removed, we can take our bumper beam and pull back and remove it from the vehicle. Okay we have our hitch laying on the ground with our bumper beam. The way this is going to work, our hitch will go on first. Our bumper beam, we'll sandwich the hitch between the car and the bumper beam itself. And then we'll reinstall our factory bolts into the original holes. It's very helpful to have an extra set of hands to help you install the hitch and hold everything in place as you do this.We have one person holding the hitch in place now. And then we'll come in with the bumper beam, line up our holes, and reinstall our hardware. Once I get one started on each side, it'll be a lot easier. Now that we have all of our hardware started by hand, we can snug it down. Okay with all of our bolts tight, we can now torque them to the amount specified in the instructions. Now we'll reinstall our lower fascia. Make sure we clip our wiring harness back in. Reinstall our screws. Reinstall our two side panels. For our center panel I've marked out according to the instructions, an area we need to trim out to have clearance around our hitch. You can use a sharp utility knife to cut this. I'm going to use a rotary tool because I feel like I can get a cleaner cut and do it a little bit quicker. Okay with our center section trimmed, we can now reinstall it. And that completes our look at and installation of the Draw-Tite class one trailer hitch receiver, part number 24966 on this 2017 Toyota Prius Prime.

Very happy with this and I would definitely recommend this product. Not sure how the other available models for the 4th generation Prius compare. A couple of comments about installation: - I highly, highly recommend having a second person to help keep everything in place while you reinstall the bumper mounting bolts. I did this myself but it's extremely difficult to do with just 2 hands. - The recommended hole you're supposed to cut out of the underbody plastic shroud is really ugly and will no doubt help collect crud under it and inside the bumper facia. I cut a "T"-shaped hole to fit the actual protrusion on the receiver and it's much cleaner, although it obviously took a bit longer than just hacking a big rectangle out of the plastic. 558324

I like this hitch. It is very sturdy and my bike rack is a fairly tight fit which reduces wobble. It was tight enough though that it was a little challenging to get the pin inserted but not so much as to be a problem. I can't give it five stars because it took me about 3 hours to install it. The instructions and video didn't address removing the lower bumper fascia on my 2018 Prius Prime Plus well enough. I encountered a large foam spacer in the middle of the bumper that was blocking access to the middle 3 retainer clips. The foam wasn't mentioned in the video or instructions. After struggling with it for a long time, I accidentally pushed the bottom of the fascia away from the car and realized when I did that I could reach in between the plastic and steel of the bumper and get to the clips. My photos show the foam piece I encountered and my bike rack inserted into the hitch after the install. 556874

Great fitting hitch, great looking hitch (meaning you barely notice it and what you do see isn't ugly). The instruction video was excellent and is about accurate in it's difficulty rating. The hard part is lifting the bumper and hitch assembly up together and getting the first couple bolts in to hold it up. 547393

Got this hitch and installed on my wife's 2017 Prius 2 with the purpose of using our 1-1/4 in receiver bike rack (older model Yakima). I backed the car on to ramps to lift the rear end and could get to everything I needed. I looked at the two videos on youtube from etrailer. The only tricky part was trying to figure out the proper way to release the clips holding the wiring harness from the tabs on the top of the fascia. One of the videos I watched showed a close up of the clip and how to use needle pliers to squeeze the clip just right for release. The measurements for cutting the bottom cover didn't seem accurate, but I tried to measure first and adjust the cut. It came out fine. I did get my wife to help when lifting it all into place. I used a 1/4 in bolt and nut on one side just to hold the hitch on that side while lining up the bumper and hitch for original bolts on the other side. Then while all was still pretty loose, I removed that bolt and nut and then inserted the original bolts - someone else suggested this in a review. It's all flush with the bottom of the bumper and hardly noticeable. I may get something to put in the square hole when not using it. But I couldn't see paying too much for a chunk of rubber that is for sale by this company. Cheers! 515056

I have installed the hitch on our 2018 Prius. The video was a big help. It took me about 5 hours to install partially because I was on my back. A lift would have sped things up dramatically. A lot of time was spent trying to figure how to remove the wiring harness clips from the lower bumper fascia panel. I am not a neophyte. I have lots of tools. I have at least 10 pairs of needle nose pliers both straight and angled in various sizes. After more than an hour trying various approaches, I finally realized I could unclip them with my fingers. If l could see them, it would be easy but they are in a spot where you cant "see". It would be a big help if you spent some more time in your video on how to deal with the wiring harness. I was installing on a Prius 3 which has the proximity sensors mounted in the bumper. 540477

I am super happy with this product and the whole experience ordering from etrailer. I was amazed that they shipped it so fast for free! The included instructions and bonus material on safe trailering and how to determine your trailer tongue weight was great. The instructions were easy to following and I was able to install the hitch in pretty short order. Fit and finish are excellent and it's already in use with my new Saris bike rack, hauling my mountain bike. The hitch sticks out plenty far to keep things away from the car without sticking out too far and being obvious or a hazard. Thanks for a great product, price, shipping and service! 514659

Completely satisfied. Installation video was the most important to me. I never would have purchased a hitch with difficulty rating of 10 without it. By far the biggest challenge was aligning bumper and hitch with holes in frame when you are by yourself. I used 3" carriage bolts with wingnuts to do this. I never completely removed the bumper. I removed 3 of the 4 bumper bolts and held the bumper in place with jackstands. Then I removed the last bolt on 1 side, slid the hitch in place and used the carriage bolt to align the holes and hold the parts in place while I did the same on the other side. With the jackstands holding the bumper and the carriage bolts keeping the hitch in place, I was able the thread the 3 bumper bolts to the frame. Then I removed the carriage bolts, threaded the 4th bumper bolt and tightened them all. 496268

This is the second trailer hitch I've installed on two different Prius cars. The 1-1/4" size is very adequate for the my heavy bike rack and two 50 lbs electric bikes. I also installed a 1-1/4 plug into the opening to keep road dirt out. 595465

The trailer hitch went on my new Prius pretty well. I had the printed instructions and the install video. Honestly, one hard part was getting those plastic button fasteners out. If you haven't done those before, you are a little perplexed. I think it is best to approach the slots between button and fastener rim with slot screw drivers on opposite sides and then twist those at the same time to get the button moving. Then move 90 degrees and do two more opposite slots till you have a 1/4 to 3/8 inch drop down on the button vs the fastener rim. Then pull the whole fastener assembly down and out. Also those little clips that hold the wire harness on the bumper were a little to hard to figure out, have to pinch them below the tab on the bumper piece they fit into and pull up. Came out pretty well once I figured that out. I used a central pump jack on my Prius and then put jack stands on each side. Took two people to get the bumper beam and hitch back on the car, a little awkward. Probably could have found a few boxes to support one end at just the right level while getting the bolts started on the other end. Took me several hours due to not having done this before. Could do another in half the time. Did not put the wire harness on yet, saving that for another rainy day. Nice little project if you like projects. If not, probably not worth saving $150 as the trailer rental place does it for that. 582478

I purchased this hitch for my 2017 Prius Prime in order to attach a bicycle rack. I ordered the hitch and received it in 3 business days, excellent! I enlisted the local Toyota dealership to install the hitch and they did a fantastic job. The hitch fits very nicely and is a nice clean solution to adding a hitch to the Prius Prime. Barely even see the receiver under the car. Highly recommend buying this hitch from etrailer.com and having your local dealership install it. You will not be disappointed! 540169

Good product and etrailer shipped it quickly and provided good support. Installation was not too difficult since I am used to working on cars and have a decent set of tools. The video etrailer put together was very helpful to nail down what had to happen to install it. Between the video and the paper instructions, installation went quickly and I didn't have any roadblocks. The hitch is of good quality and the fit is very good. I am quite happy with my purchase and the product. 523179

Ask the Experts about this Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch
Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • How to Transport Bikes with 2017 Toyota Prius Prime
  • I do have a solution for you, however there is not a trunk-mount bike rack available that is confirmed to fit your 2017 Toyota Prius Prime for exactly the reasons you mentioned. Its hatch construction and design prevents a secure fit with a trunk-mounted carrier. Your best option for transporting bikes with your Prius Prime is with a trailer hitch and hitch-mounted rack. For a trailer hitch, I recommend the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver # 24966. This Class I hitch is confirmed...

  • Comparing Draw Tite Hitches for 2017 Toyota Prius
  • For all intents and purposes the Draw Tite hitches part # 24944 and # 24966 are the same thing for your 2017 Toyota Prius. They will install the same and function the same. Your best option though is the part # 24966 which is a bit less expensive and just as good as the other.

  • Best Bike Rack Recommendation for 2017 Toyota Prius that Wont Affect Gas Mileage
  • The all-around best option for transporting bikes is a hitch bike rack. For your situation specifically it doesn't affect gas mileage like a roof bike rack does, and because it doesn't touch the vehicle's painted surfaces anywhere which prevents any possible scratching or denting. The most popular bike rack we carry that has been confirmed to fit this vehicle is the Thule Roadway 2 part # TH912XTR. We asked our demo and install guys to name their favorite, most easy-to-use bike racks...

  • Can Hitch Install on 2016 Toyota Prius without Voiding the Warranty
  • You've done your research! You bring up a lot of interesting contradictions that surround hitches and Toyota Prius. I was actually just following a Prius this morning that had a hitch and bike rack installed which made me think of this as well. The situation is that in the US we are incredibly sue-happy so the manufacturers are way more strict with towing capacities over here than over in the UK. This means we get lower towing capacities and more vehicles say that you cannot tow at all...

  • Draw-Tite vs. Curt for Bike Rack Recommendation for 2017 Prius Prime
  • Yes, the Draw Tite part # 24966 is the best hitch for the 2017 Toyota Prius Prime for carrying a bike rack since it has best clearance and doesn't require the strap like Curt does. I attached a link to the install instructions for you to check out as well. I really like the Saris Freedom Superclamp part # SA4025F. This is a lightweight platform rack (which is normally an unheard of combo). That means it'll be easy to install and remove from your vehicle since it's light, but also it'll...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack for a 2018 Toyota Prius Prime
  • The trailer hitch I recommend for your 2018 Prius Prime is the Draw-Tite, part # 24966. It's a Class I hitch designed specifically to fit your car. I've linked an install video for you. For a bike rack I recommend the Saris Freedom EX, part # SA4412F. It holds bikes by the frame with rubber cradles that adjust independently so it fits a large variety of bike styles. It also has a 60 pound bike capacity and fits up to 4-1/2 inch tires. My favorite thing about the Freedom EX is that...

  • The MaxxTow Aluminum 2-Inch Hitch Cargo Carrier # MT70108 could be used with a 1-1/4-inch to 2-inch hitch adapter like Brophy # HTAD or # HT5R but use of such adapters will cause you to lose half of your hitch's capacity. This loss comes from the actual load being moved further away from the hitch tube, which increase leverage on the hitch. The 1-1/4-inch Class I hitches made for your 2018 Prius Prime, Draw-Tite # 24966 and Curt # C11473, have a 200-lb tongue weight (TW) rating which...

This rack uses an unusual security system that requires a special tool and custom locks are offered by the manufacturer. We do not offer that special tool or lock but the rack will fit the hitch you referenced. I linked our page...
