The installation guide was a little intimidating. But the YouTube video was easy to follow. The product is great and is completely hidden when I snap the cover back on.
Clever design and installation method. I used this to replace a 1.25" hitch receiver that hung down below the bumper. The departure angle of the Crosstrek is greatly improved, plus now my truck and my gf's Crosstrek can share accessories. Another benefit is you can keep the factory impact bar which is located higher on the bumper. This provides better collision protection from taller vehicles like trucks. No surprises with the installation.
Thank you!
Perfect fit!

Couldn't agree more Keith! Looks fantastic.
If you follow the directions you can be done in less than an hour and a half. I prepared the car by opening up the holes, installing the bolts in the frame and dropped the exhaust by myself. I asked my brother to lift the hitch into place and start the bolts then finished tightening everything down. The installation was a breeze and it is great not seeing the hitch when the receiver is not installed. My wife was even on board once she knew it wouldn’t be visible. The cost is twice as much as any other hitch but not seeing it and not losing any ground clearance are worth it. Angela was extremely knowledgeable and a joy to work with. Hopefully it will work as great at it looks when we start pulling our jet ski with it.

We still love the hidden hitch on the car. It doesn’t distract from the look and the height of the receiver is perfect. I would choose this again if given the option again.
This hitch has been great. It was easy to install, and is completely hidden behind the bumper of my 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek. I use it to tow and also to carry my dirtbike (on a hitch carrier), and it has worked flawlessly for both.
Besides being hidden, the other bonus to this hitch receiver is that it doesn't reduce the ground clearance at all. I have a friend with a steep driveway and my other vehicle drags its hitch when it transitions from the road to the driveway, whereas my Subaru, with this hitch has no problems.
The one thing to be wary of is the length of the hitch that you put into the receiver. If it extends too far through the receiver it can contact the muffler (see in the pictures that the muffler is directly behind the hitch receiver). This doesn't cause any functional issues, it just makes a bit of noise when the muffler is vibrating against the hitch at low engine rpm.
*Important: This is not a problem with the product, just an issue with the insertion depth of one of the hitches that I am using, and I thought that users should be aware of the potential.
Note in the pictures that I have a Fox receiver cover, that is just there for fun, if I want, I can replace it with the original bumper plug and there is no indication that a hitch is even there.
I had gotten this rack for my Crosstrek with the intention of using a bike rack without lowering the clearance of the car. It's exactly the hidden look I was hoping for and haven't had any issues with getting the bike rack in and out or being unstable. For someone who isn't particularly handy, the install was a bit tricky. But even still it only took a couple hours by myself. Despite my own inefficiencies, the guide (and some [online] videos) was super helpful and once installed the hitch itself has been exceptional. Haven't had to even think about it, which is the best kind of gear. Big fan.
Hitch looks great once installed (can't see it). Haven't tried it out yet, but seems like it should do the trick. Will need to get a shorter ball mount that doesn't hit the muffler or an extension that fits.
Install was a pain, mainly due to the instructions, be aware if you choose Version 1 in the instructions, they are wrong (now I know why all the videos seem to be version 2). If you tighten up the hitch bolts in version 1 step 8, you will not be able to get the bumper impact bar back into place over the studs in step 9. The hitch sort of nestles in the shoulder of the bumper bar, so it can be raised into place once the bumper impact bar is in (see pics). However, you will not be able to then get a wrench on the hitch bolts through the end of the frame rail to torque them, so you are relying on luck that they bite enough to torque to 75 ft-lbs. One side torqued for me, but had to use an impact gun to snug the other ones enough that they would bite the lock washers and torque down. Also used a flat screwdriver from the top hole to brace one against the impact to get it to bite. If I had it to do again, probably would opt for version two of enlarging the holes as you could probably make them big enough for a wrench of some sort. If you do remove the bumper, grab some of the plastic body connectors and rivets from the auto parts store as you are sure to break them.
High quality product with great looking welds and a nice powder coat finish. Will undoubtedly handle the towing and tongue weight capacity of my 2016 Crosstrek which is 1000 lb (no trailer brakes) and 200 lb, respectively.
Installation is straightforward, I went with the rear bumper removal method. The instructions provided state that there are 10 body pins to remove to get the rear bumper facia off, this however does not account for the pins that hold the rear splash guards on(if your vehicle is equipped). Regardless, once the rear facia is removed getting the impact bar off and the hitch installed is about as easy as wrenching gets.
Make sure you torque and paint mark all your hardware after installation. I did have to hit one of the nuts with the impact to get it to hold so that I could torque it (there is not easy access to hold the bolt head).
Plan to use hitch for a cargo tray. Let's be honest, the Crosstrek is not a good tow rig.
Price on this product seems high compared with other hitch receivers, but the aethetics and functionality were enough to convince me.
Great product! Keeps the hitch high and out of sight without decreasing my departure angle. Easy to install. With a little caution, I was able to install it without dropping the exhaust. The only issue I had was clearance between the hitch and the muffler when I installed my hitch-mount spare tire carrier.
I was very nervous to install this but it was relatively easy. We budgeted a whole day but it only took a couple hours. It fits the car perfectly (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek), meaning it’s pops through the manufacturer’s dedicated hitch spot. No cutting the bumper required! I am so pleased. I’d recommend this to anyone.
As you've likely found if you looked up any install videos on this hitch, there is some small modifications that need to be done for it to fit, but nothing too difficult. I regularly pull a fairly heavy single axel trailer full of band equipment and this hitch has no issues whatsoever. Love the fact that it conceals behind the factory cutout in the bumper.
Very nice product, and a fun project to take the car apart a bit! Only 3 complaints / requests:
1. It was fairly difficult to get the bolts to bite and stop turning inside the frame.
2. It would also have helped to have a reminder in the instructions to check that the hitch is centered before tightening the bolts :)
3. More detailed descriptions of the different snap fittings on the bumper would have saved time.
Great product. Very easy to install, expending the top holes took most of my time.
If the two plastic brackets holding the bottom of the bumper to the body is removed than the muffler can stay in place.
On my daughters '17 Crosstrek I did it by myself on the ground, with the help of two floor-jacks. Lifted it all the way into place and then I fished the hardware trough.
It fits pretty much perfectly, only in my opinion it could sit 4-5 mm higher so it would be more in the middle of the opening. I know that would involve making the vertical brackets shorter. Just an idea.
Especially thank you the crew from etrailer for shipping it way faster then expected.
I send some pictures with a bike rack installed and with the bottom and top gaps.
Thank you so much, Stay safe and healthy everyone!
Hitch arrived slightly bent but still installed within 2 hours. The included fish wire bolt leader was extremely useful
Wonderful Hitch! - took 2 to 3 hours to install. Very easy getting clips out (just be gentle as they are brittle) - had to order more clips for the ones I broke but very happy with the finished product. Make sure you get the curt 4 way connector and drill a hole through the bumper for a clean install for your 4 pin connection (see final photo)
Love it! High ride height. More ground clearance. Receptacle is in retangle bumper port. Use it with a Thule rack for my recumbent.
Delivery was prompt and install wasn’t bad I did not have to remove the bumper or drop the exhaust as the instructions recommend the hardest part of the job was removing my old hitch I definitely recommend at least trying it with the bumper and exhaust intact first to prevent making extra work
It took me about 30 mins to install myself without even using a jack but one would be helpful
Extremely happy with the hitch! Shipping was quick and free. I was also able to install the hitch myself. The instructions work great but you can always online videos if you need help. It only took me about 45min - 1hr to install. Great product!
Easiest instal of a hitch. Just had to pull the two push pins out cut the extra plastic, cut the center hole to 1 inch and install. Really easy. You don't need to drop the bumper at all. My wife helped and it took about a half hour. Took more time getting and putting away the tools away. Third hitch I installed and by far the fastest and easiest. Also doesn't sit below the bumper. Really worth it.
Amazing well fitting in the space. Instructions were perfect. I went with the option to take the bumper off because I have a hybrid XV Crosstrek. It would have been messy otherwise.
The hitch was a relatively easy installation and has been bombproof. I have towed several different trailers and use it for my bike rack, as well. Highly recommended!
It was a good fit to the car and extremely easy to install, all the mounting hardware was included as well as a fishing wire to make it easier. I also bought the curt wiring kit and it was as simple as plug and play.
This product was delivered quickly and in perfect condition. I installed it myself after watching a [installation] video. I did not take of the muffler nor the bumper. I thought that would lead to more work and a possibility of me messing up the rusty muffler nuts and bolts and ruining the pins holding the bumper in place. I was right to not remove them. To start things, I used a file to expand the wholes to install the nuts and bolts. It was kind of like opening a can of pork and beans. The fish wire trick was quick and easy once I got the holes wide enough. Once I had the bolt and washer in place, I twisted the nut in a bit so the bolt wont go up in the hole. I looked around the bumper to find any parts I would need to remove to have more space. I did realize there was a metal component holding the bumper on the right and another on the left side (5:50 on the [video] link). I pried them out, be careful with the plastic pins and use a flat head screw driver to push the middle pin. After that, I used a couple of wood saw horses I have and some wood blocks to have the hitch stay in place. I started with one end at a time while the other side was a on the saw horse. Once it was over the back side of the bumper, I unscrewed one of the nuts set the hitch in place and loose tightened the nut in place. I then went over to the other side of the hitch and did the same but installed both nuts and bolts in place loose again. I went to the first side I started and place the second nut and bold in place. Last part I tightened all the bolts and I was done. It was about 99 degrees and I definitely recommend doing the installation on better weather or in the shade if you can. Be sure to have a good pair of Googles (I used my bike glass) and gloves. I highly recommend this product for its simplicity to install and not have to pay hundreds of dollars. Watch [the installation video] and bang you can install it your self.

The strainer hitch is working as it should with no issues at all. I am glad I bought it and installed it myself.the bonus is that it is neatly tucked away and not visible.
The hitch looks high-quality, and the installation went smoothly. I would recommend you watch the install video before installing the hitch (it made it easier for me) The only issue I had was when trying to tighten down the four mounting bolts - they want to spin (there's nothing holding the bolt heads from turning). So I ended up holding the exposed threads below the nuts with a small vice-grip, and using a wrench to tighten them down - it worked. I used a uni-bit to enlarge the above/access holes to 1" vs. using a hole saw. No pictures because it is hidden up under the car (which is what my wife wanted). I am very pleased with it.

Working great! I put an extended D-ring receiver thing in the receiver when driving in the winter as a tow point, and other times the hitch has been used for a bike carrier. Couldnt be happier with it hidden up under the bumper where you cant see it otherwise.
This hitch works great for me as it is hidden under the bumper it doesn't get in the way when I am off road. The only bad this is that the place to hook the tow chains is also hidden behind the bumper I mainly use this to hold my hitch mount cargo basket for extra storage install was easy

Works great I only use it to tow my small boat or small trailer and have a hitch rack the only draw back to the hidden hitch is there is no way to hook up the safety chains however this is no fault of the hitch it is just the way it is by design on my trek. It is the only con and is far outweighed by the pros of having this hitch on the car
