Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario. Technical Support

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2000 Subaru Outback Wagon - Draw-Tite

Today on our 2000 Subaru Outback Wagon, we'll be installing the Draw-Tite Hitch, part number 36284. Here's what the hitch looks like installed on our vehicle. Now we'll go ahead and give you a couple of measurements in helping you choose some accessories such as a ball mount, bicycle rack or a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper is approximately 6 inches. From the top of the opening in the receiver to the ground is approximately 14 inches. Now let's go ahead and install our hitch. Now we're going to need to go ahead and lower this carbon canister down here on the passenger side. To do this there are three nuts that will need to be removed to get the main body of the carbon canister out of the way.

Two at the rear of the vehicle and one in the center from the front of the canister. With this lowered out of the way, we'll need to remove two more bolts that hold the bracket to the frame of the vehicle. Now with the carbon canister lowered down out of the way, we'll need to go ahead and lower the rear most exhaust hanger so we can slide the exhaust over to give us a little extra room. To do this we'll use some spray lubricant and in this case, we went ahead and used a large pry bar or a large flat head screwdriver will work as well. Now with the rubber exhaust hanger removed, we'll go ahead and point out the locations that we'll be mounting our hitch. We'll be using both of the tow hooks, one on each side. The two farthest forward locations, the larger one that we'll use as the access hole and then a smaller one that'll have the carriage bolt and the spacer block pulled into it. Let's go ahead and remove the two rubber plugs.

Now for the two forward locations one on each side, we'll use a carriage bolt, a spacer block, a mechanical tooth washer and a hex nut. Here's what that would look like. The two front locations are exactly the same hardware. The two rear locations, however, are a little bit different. The hardware on the passenger side at the rear location utilizing the tow hook, will be a hex bolt, a spacer block, then it will go through the tow hook and then we will go through two spacer blocks doubled up and then finally through the hitch. Once the bolt is through that, then we will put a lock washer followed by a hex nut on that. For the driver's side, we'll be using another hex bolt, a spacer block, then we'll go through the tow hook.

Then we'll just put one space block this time on, through the hitch followed by a lock washer and a hex nut. Next we'll fishwire our hardware into position. First we'll take the fishwire and put it through our mounting location and out our access hole. Next we'll place our space block on and then thread on our bolt. Now we can pull our hardware into position. We'll repeat this for the other side. Now we're ready to go ahead and get an extra set of hands to help us raise the hitch up into place.

On the driver's side you need to make sure that the hitch goes to the outside of the tow hook. For the passenger side, you'll make sure that the hitch goes on the inside of the tow hook. Once you raise the hitch up into place, we'll go ahead and put the conical tooth washer and the hex nut on loosely on both of the front locations. With these two in place, we can go ahead and install the rear hardware, making sure that we use three spacer blocks on the passenger side and two spacer blocks on the driver's side. Now with all the hardware installed, we can go ahead and tighten things down and then torque them to the manufacturer's specification. With all the hardware torqued, we can go ahead and put the carbon canister back up into place. Now that this is back up, we can go ahead and put the rubber exhaust hanger back up that we removed earlier. With that, that will conclude our installation of the Draw-Tite Hitch, part number 36284, on our 2000 Subaru Outback Wagon. .

2002 Subaru Outback. Excellent communication daily from eTrailer until it arrived, which was on exactly the day they estimated! Tracking was great. Instructions that arrived with the item were not all that great, but I had watched eTrailer's online video and read the online tips. Installed slick as snot with a perfect fit -- even though I was lying on my back in a flooded garage. Even the lighting converter installed in minutes. Hauled a 3000 GVW trailer 500 miles with it the next day. Went to retorque the 4 bolts following the trip and they were still tight as a miser's coin purse. Love these guys and will tell all my friends! 73884

The hitch and wiring are still working great, though the Subaru is showing its age maybe Ive been hauling trailers with it too much! Someone knicked the receiver cover, which I need to replace.I gotten questions from other Subaru owners about it and have told them to check it out on future vehicle I get will get an eTrailer drawbar receiver unless it already comes with one. Handiest thing to get full capability out of a Subaru, or any other sport wagon.

Precise fit to the 01 Outback. This is not difficult to install but there should be two people to lift the hitch into position. Once the bolts are threaded, its a one person job. Special attention should be paid to spacer orientation during installation particularly on the car frame tiedown points. It may appear that they will not fit into the tiedown flared edges but they will. It is important that the spacers fit flush to the frame so spend the time to orient them correctly fliping the spacers around if necessary. Read the instructions carefully and make sure you purchase the bolt leader. The leader is passed through the small hole in the frame and the spacer then out the big hole where the bolt is then threaded on and then pulled through into place in the spacer and small hole. Finish up with a torque wrench. Skipping on proper torque (too tight or loose) can easily lead to a highway disaster. Auto parts stores rent them too. Space is tight on the rear tiedown point driver side so torquing the bolt is better rather than torquing the nut-- Use a 3/4 inch socket and wrench. A 11/16 socket is all that's required on the upper points. Check them all twice alternating between front and rear. 155846

The product was exactly what I needed and easy to install (per my friend who knows how to do these things). I haven't actually used it yet as I'm waiting for my bike rack to arrive. 83202

Ordered both the hitch and the wiring T one connection. Arrived on time with the wiring taped to the hitch in an easy way to remove. Easy enough to install by yourself if you allow more time and acrobatics to hold the hitch up against the car, much easier with help. It isn't enough to take down the black box on the right, you really want to remove the mounting hardware that holds the little box up against the frame. The hitch basically aligns itself. The bolt threader is not necessary if you have a mechanical finger pickup tool and a magnet. I held the head of the bolt at a right angle with the mechanical finger tool and that was good enough to guide the bolt where it needed to be in the frame with the spacer. Fits close to the car and looks great. Would definitely use E trailer again. 79527

The instructional videos were extremely helpful, especially since they had the make, model and year for my application. The bolt leader (fish wire, must be ordered separately) was also a must for this application as getting the spacer block and carriage bolt positioned inside a small frame rail would be impossible otherwise. I would like to see the bolt leader included with the hitch. The hitch installation was smooth and straight forward, the only complications being due to the rusted fasteners on my car. I did use a thread-lock compound on the four hitch mounting bolts. 35725

Man. I'll tell you what, my new Draw-Tite Sportframe #36284 trailer hitch is flat out the bee knees. The Draw-Tite Sportframe #36284 trailer hitch pulls like a Peter Built and that ain't no lie. I had that thing hooked up to like three chicken coupes, dragging them around the yard like a dog with an itchy butt. That Draw-Tite Sportframe #36284 trailer hitch never even put out a bead of sweat. 345438

Install went well, the instructional video is far better than the paper instructions included with the hitch. You will need to unbolt the charcoal canister as well as the mount it attached to in order to slide the hitch up past it. The paper instructions only tell you to remove the canister. Aside from that, everything installed as advertised, no interference or rattles. 238830

Product was shipped fast and received in great condition. Installation was simple and quick. I especially appreciated the videos that were specific for my year and model of vehicle - particularly helpful for the wiring harness adapter (installation of the adapter is near-trivial, but guidance in how to disassemble the cargo area trim was very helpful). 29365

Excellent customer service. Very prompt in all inquiries. Product arrived a little scuffed, but I suspect it's likely to happen when you place a cumbersome metal object in a box. Very simple to install. I didn't have the wire bolt started like in the video, I used a piece of string that worked as well. Overall very satisfied. Next up is wiring. 396856

I cannot be happier with the product, the customer service , And the price at etrailer Stephen 383273

Recieved in two days, at no cost! Very easy install at 30 min. including putting tools away and washing hands. Hitch was as described and fit perfectly. I have not towed with it at this time. It looks good as it is under the bumper far enough that it is mostly hidden and appears to only reduce clearance by a small margin. 22303

Works exactly as advertised, only took 45 min to install although you need two people to lift it onto the frame. My 2003 Subaru legacy didn't require any modification for it to fit. I just use it for hauling bikes but it works great, highly recommended! 387426

Ask the Experts about this Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch
Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Draw-Tite Hitch Recommendation for Ground Clearance on a 2000 Subaru Outback Wagon
  • Since the CURT Trailer Hitch # C12270 will sit below the rear bumper of your 2000 Subaru Outback Wagon it will reduce the ground clearance on your vehicle. However, the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 36284 will give you a little more ground clearance as the area that goes around the exhaust tip will go above the tip on the Draw-Tite hitch. Whereas, it goes below the tip on the CURT hitch. Check out the picture I attached that shows both of these hitches installed on a similar vehicle as...

  • What is the Towing Capacity for a 2001 Subaru Outback and Trailer Hitch and Wiring Recommendations
  • It took a little research but I was able to find the towing capacity information for the 2001 Subaru Outback in the online owner's manual. For manual transmission models and a trailer with no brakes the towing capacity is 1,000 pounds; with brakes it is 2,000 pounds. It is the same for automatic transmissions (1k without brakes or 2k with brakes) but also Subaru says: When towing a trailer on a long uphill grade continuously for over 5 miles (8 km) with an outside temperature of...

  • 2004 Subaru Legacy Outback Trailer Hitch with 2 Inch Receiver Opening
  • There is no Class III receiver hitch available for the 2004 Subaru Legacy. We do have an adapter that will fit the class II 1-1/4 inch receiver hitch, # 80303 that would allow you to use a 2 inch accessory in your class II receiver. When using an adapter, you must take into account that your tongue weight will be reduced by 50 percent so the weight of your bikes and rack could not exceed 100 or 125 pounds, depending on which hitch you purchase. I have linked below to the hitches we...

  • I've linked our selection of Class II ball mounts for you to take a look at. You can use an adapter to increase the tube size to a 2 inch, like # MT70032, however this is going to reduce the weight capacity of the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver # 36284 by 50 percent making it 1750 pounds with only 150 pounds of tongue weight. So yes, you will have more options of ball mounts to choose from, but you will have a lot less towing capacity. Choosing the correct rise and drop depends...

If you have a wagon model then there isn't a hitch option at this time for a sport model. For lighting you would want the Tow Ready wiring harness part # 119179KIT. Install video attached. You will need the recommended ball mount, part # 36061. For a hitch ball you would want the part # 19258 for a 2 inch ball and part # 19254 for a 1-7/8 inch ball.

We offer three options in a Class II for the 2000 as long as it is NOT the sport...

  • Recommended Bike Carrier For Carbon Frame Bikes On 2003 Subaru Outback Wagon
  • Many customers have concerns about their carbon bike frames so we recommend finding a bike carrier that holds the bikes by the wheel and not the frames. If you do not have a trailer hitch on your Outback I recommend the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver, part # 36284. This is a Class ll trailer hitch and it has a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. When installed this hitch has a distance of 6-inches form the center of the hitch pin hole to the back of the rear bumper. This measurement is important...

  • Will Draw-Tire Trailer Hitch Fit 2000 Subaru Legacy With Aftermarket Exhaust
  • I went to our warehouse and took some measurements of the Draw-Tite Hitch part # 36284 for you. I have attached a photo of the hitch and it has the dimensions you asked about. There is no drilling required when installing this hitch. There is no mention of the muffler in the attached instructions so if your muffler can fit within the frame of the hitch you should be good to go.

  • Bike Rack Fits for 2003 Subaru Outback Wagon
  • The hitch you would have on a 2003 Subaru Outback would be a 1-1/4 inch hitch like the part # 36284. We have quite a few racks that would be a fit for that. The most popular bike rack we carry that has been confirmed to fit this vehicle is the Thule Roadway 2 part # TH912XTR. We asked our demo and install guys to name their favorite, most easy-to-use bike racks and this one showed up in nearly everyone's top three. Check out the review video I attached for more info. I also attached...

  • Hitch Recommendation for a 2000 Subaru Legacy
  • For your 2000 Subaru Legacy we have 1-1/4 inch hitches available like the # 36284, but since 2 inch hitches are generally reserved for larger vehicles like SUVs and trucks there are none available for your vehicle. I attached an install video for this hitch for you to check out as well.

  • Does Using Additional Washers to Install a Hitch on a 2004 Subaru Outback Affect Capacity.
  • I spoke to my contact at Curt and he said that as long as you install enough washers for the attachment point to the tow hook so that the hitch sits solidly against it the capacity of the hitch won't be reduced at all. The issue would be the same for the Draw Tite Hitch part # 36284.

  • Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2000 Subaru Outback to Carry 4 Bikes
  • If the 1-1/4 inch hitch is a Class II hitch you can carry 4 bikes with a bike rack installed in the hitch. If the 1-1/4 inch hitch is a Class I hitch then you are limited to 2 bikes like you referenced. Since there is a Class II 1-1/4 inch hitch available for your 2000 Subaru Outback Wagon you can carry 4 bikes. For a hitch you would want the Draw Tite Hitch part # 36284. I attached an install video for this hitch plus an FAQ on hitch classifications for you to check out. For a bike...
