Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2018 Ram 1500 - Curt

Speaker 1: Today, on our 2018 Ram 1500, we're gonna be taking a look at the Curt Class III custom-fit trailer hitch receiver, part number 13374. Here's what our hitch looks like fully installed. Now, we are gonna be able to see the cross tube just right below the bumper, but the main thing we're gonna see is that receiver tube sticking out. Now, it's got a nice reinforced collar on our receiver tube, giving it added strength, and it's an overall finished look. It is a class 3, which means it's gonna give us that 2 inch x 2 inch receiver tube opening, and it's gonna be able to accept a wide variety of accessories. Now, the way we're gonna mount those accessories is gonna be through this hole here, and it's gonna accept a standard 5/8 pin and clip. Now, those aren't included, but you can pick one up on our website using part number PC3.

And the safety chain connection points are gonna be welded to the bottom of the receiver tube and the cross tube, and it's gonna be a plate style. And as you can see, we're gonna have plenty of room to get most sized hooks on or off without having to worry about them getting hung up.I do want to mention, though, that the pin hole is right in line with that connection point for the safety chains. If you are using a locking device, you might want to keep that in mind to make sure that they still fit. Now, as far as weight capacity goes, our hitch is gonna feature a 600 pound tongue weight along with a 6000 pound gross trailer weight rating. It is designed to work with weight distribution systems.

We're just gonna bump that tongue weight up to 1000 pounds and bump up the gross trailer weight rating up to 10,000 pounds. With all that in mind, I do want to mention you always want to double check your vehicle's owner's manual to make sure you're not gonna exceed the manufacturer's recommended weight.I'd like to give you a few measurements that's gonna help you in deciding for accessories for your new hitch, such as a ball mount, bike rack or even a cargo carrier. From the ground, the inside top edge of the receiver tube opening is gonna be right about 20 inches, and from the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper is gonna be right about 2-1/2 inches. Now that we've seen what our hitch looks like and gone over some of the features, let's show you how to get it installed. To begin our installation, we're gonna come to our back bumper and we're gonna have our bumper support here, and if we move towards the front of our truck, we're gonna have one bolt that we're gonna have to remove out of that bumper support. We're gonna be using a 21 mm socket to pull it out.

We're gonna want to hold onto this bolt because we are gonna be reusing it, and we'll remove the other one on the other side as well. Now, if we move forward just a bit, we're gonna have a rather large hole in the bottom of our frame rail here. You're gonna want to grab your fish wire, and we're gonna take the smaller of the two spacer blocks. We're gonna slide that right over the coiled end, and then we're gonna take our carriage bolt and we're gonna thread it onto the coiled end. Now, to get our hardware in place, we're gonna be doing what's called the reverse fish wire. You're gonna take your bolt and you're gonna push it up into the frame, and then separately you're gonna push that spacer block into the frame and you're gonna pull it down.

Now, since they only provide us with two pull wires in our kit, you're gonna want to remove the pull wire but you're gonna want to unthread it so it doesn't damage the coiled end on here. And we're gonna do that for the other side, as well.We come to the very back of our vehicle where our bumper support is, right behind our license plate. We're gonna notice that we're gonna have two oblong holes that are in our bumper support, and we're gonna take that same fish wire, we're gonna put it in the oblong hole, and on the passenger side we're gonna push it towards the passenger side so that it comes out at the end of the frame rail there. Now, you want to make sure that you leave a little bit coming out of that oblong hole inaudible 00:03:57 you can still access the coiled end. Now, we're gonna be doing the same thing. We're gonna take the large spacer block this time. We're gonna slide it over the coiled end. We're gonna take another one of our carriage bolts and thread it on. Then, we're gonna take them and we're gonna push them into the bumper support, and we're gonna pull them towards the center to where they come out of the bumper support here and the bolt sticks out. Now, I am gonna just leave the fish wire attached to this one and just push it back into the bumper support so that we can actually get our hitch in place. Now, we're gonna have another one that we're gonna have to fish wire into place on that other hole. Now, with an extra set of hands, we're gonna get our hitch put in place. Just want to go from the back side of the truck and put your pull wires into the center part of the hitch. I'm gonna lift it up, actually pull on the bolt lead so the bolt will come out just a little bit and help support our hitch. Then we're gonna take their factory M14 bolt and thread it back through the hitch and back into the frame. Now, on each side I'm gonna come back with that 21 mm socket, and I'm gonna snug up the bolts to make sure that the hitch is gonna support itself. I'm gonna take our flange nuts and, for the bolts coming down from the bottom of our frame, go ahead and secure it and put those on hand tight so we can get the rest of our hardware in place. For the bolts on the back of the hitch, I'm going to remove the pull wire. Try and be careful not to drop that bolt back into the bumper beam.Once you have the pull wire removed, we're gonna grab another one of our flange nuts and secure it down, and we'll do that for both of our bolts back here. Now, for our half inch bolts and nuts, we're gonna come back with a 3/4 inch socket and snug them all up. For our factory M14 bolts, I'm gonna use that same 21 mm socket and I'm gonna torque them down to the specified amount in the instructions. I'm gonna repeat that for the other one, as well. I'm gonna come back with a 3/4 inch socket and torque down my half inch hardware to the specified amount. I'm gonna repeat that for all of our remaining hardware. With all of our hardware torqued down, that'll finish up our install, and now all we have left to do is put our spare tire back. And that'll finish up your look at the Curt Class III custom-fit trailer hitch receiver, part number 13374, on our 2018 Ram 1500.

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Difference Between Curt # 13333 And Curt # 13374 For 2014 Dodge Ram 1500 Crew Cab
  • I spoke with my contact at Curt about your 2014 Dodge Ram 1500. They said it would depend on how you are planning on using the hitch you choose. If you are planning on towing something that would require a weight distribution system when towing, you will want the part # 13374. Weight distribution is needed if your trailer weight is more than 50 percent of your truck weight, or if the rear of your truck sags when the trailer is hooked up, or you experience trailer sway. • Best Class III Trailer Hitch for a 2014 Ram 1500 that Allows Bumper Cap to be Reinstalled
  • Most owners do not have a problem reinstalling the bumper cap. But some owners cannot reinstall the cap after installing Curt trailer hitch # 13333 on a 2014 Ram 1500. It is possible that on your truck, if you do end up having difficulty, that the hitch could be pulled up tighter to the bumper causing the cap not to fit back on. If this happens to you what you can try is to run the bolt in and out a few times to see if it can seat lower in its spot. You can also try changing the order...
