Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 1996 Nissan Maxima - Hidden Hitch

Today on this 1996 Nissan Maxima, were going to install part number 60945 from Hidden Hitch. This is what the hitch looks like when its installed on the vehicle. Next well give you some measurements to help you out in selecting some accessories such as a bicycle rack or a cargo carrier. From the top of the receiver opening down to the ground will be about 12 and a half inches, and from the center of the hitch pinhole to the edge of the bumper will be around six inches. Now well go ahead and show you how the hitch is installed. First thing were going to do is go ahead and lower the exhaust.

Towards the outside on the exhaust there is a mount that goes to the frame. Were going to unbolt that mount and remove it from the muffler. On the other side of the muffler is another hanger. Were going to spray it down with some lubricant and remove it from the muffler as well. This will give us some flexibility to remove the remaining hardware in the frame.

Next were going to remove the tie down bracket thats on the passengers side. There are two bolts on the bottom and one from the side. Now this tie down bracket will not be reinstalled. Were done with the passengers side. Lets go over to our drivers side and repeat the same process.

There will be four bolts on the bracket for our drivers side, so well go ahead and unbolt those. Now our drivers side bracket is removed. Now we can go ahead and show you where the hitch installs on the vehicle. On the drivers side, the four bolts are removed. The hitch will use all four threaded holes.

On the passengers side, the hitch will use the two threaded holes on the bottom and one open hole next in line going towards the front. In the one hole without the threads well have to install hardware. So well take the bolt leader with the kit, well show it how it assembles first before we install it in the frame. Well go ahead and run our bolt leader through the hole were going to use through the frame and out the access hole which is farther up to the large, oval hole. Well thread it through the frame, run our block through it, and then thread on our bolt and pull it through. Well pull it through the hole and now through the frame. At this point we can go ahead and start installing the hitch. What well do is take the hitch and on the passengers side slide it over the exhaust and up into the frame. Well go ahead and line it up on the passengers side but we wont install it. Well use the exhaust to hold the hitch up while we install the hardware on our drivers side. The hardware will be a bolt, flat washer, and lock washer. Again, well show it together before we install it. Now this same combination will be used in all four bolt holes on the drivers side. Now were going to leave all this hardware as loose as possible on the drivers side and then go back over to the passengers side. With our bolt leader still on the bolt, well go ahead and thread it through the hitch, push the hitch up against the frame, and pull the bolt through. At this point its a good idea to have an extra set of hands to help hold the hitch up while we install the hardware. The hardware will be the conical tooth washer and a nut. If you look on the conical tooth washer, there are small teeth that need to be facing towards the hitch when we install it. With the conical tooth washer and nut loosely installed, well go ahead and install the remaining two fasteners. Again, it will be the metric bolt with the flat washer and lock washer. With all our hardware loosely installed, we can go ahead and tighten it down for good and then torque the bolts down as specified in the instructions. Now our hitch is fully installed. Now we need to reinstall the exhaust. The bracket on the passengers side that we removed earlier, well have to remove the rubber hanger from that and that will get reused. One end of the rubber hanger will go onto the built-in hanger thats on the hitch and the other end will go onto the exhaust hanger. Then well reinstall the hanger on the other side of the muffler. With that, our hitch install is finished. That will do it for our install of part number 60945 on our 1996 Nissan Maxima.

Install on 2000 Nissan Maxima Using hitch mount Thule Roadway 912xt bike carrier Very well built, fairly easy to install. Use the tips provided by etrailer and you will have less trouble. The only thing that worried me on install was the bolt leader. I had NEVER used one and wasn't sure what to do, but figured it out. My only slight gripe is the directions. They are a little vague and don't offer much help. Not bad, but for someone who has never installed any type of hitch, they may be confusing. There were also several bolts left over that didn't get used, which made me a little worried, but I could not find any place that they could be put. Extras maybe? Maybe, but that info should be in the directions. All in all, very solid hitch that I use to transport my bikes. I wish I could hold more weight, but that is due to the limitations of my car and the hitch. Make sure you buy the correct hitch accessory, as this hitch will only accept CLASS I receiver products. 33072

I had no trouble installing this hitch on my maxima. Very straight forward...Had to remove to bolts and a couple muffler rubber gromets/holders to get the the car ready to receive the hitch. I fished all three of the passenger side bolts through the frame with the threaders first and also held the hitch in place with my floor jack to keep in lined up correctely without have to balance. The negative part is after the hitch was installed, my bike rack was A REALLY TIGHT FIT!!! It probably took 15 minutes to get the thing to slide in to the receiver...I even had to sand away some of the paint on the rack!! Total install was probably an hr, but if I had to do it again, probably halft that since I now know what Im doing. It looks good and will serve its purpose! 44088

I saw it on the internet , It looked good for the price so i called and ordered it, the people were all so nice. It was here faster than expected, within a day or two, It was a easy install almost any one could do. I would buy another, or recomend it to a friend, everything went smoothly till the very end I attempted to take its picture but this is what it did, living up to it's name, it just went off and hid. 47296

This hidden hitch is solid, and is hidden well on my 1998 Maxima. This installed relatively easily. The only problem that I had was installing the bolts through the frame, which I had to use a different route than the instructions had shown. I have hauled a U-Haul trailer over 6 hours with a motorcycle. I have had zero problems with this item. I would recommend this to anyone interested 118453

not easy to install, due to car's (nissan maxima 2002) not threded 3 holes on the passinger side above the mufler. You have to fish them through the further back hole, and not to lose them - use lock-grip pliers on the end of the wire to secure them while positioning the hitch over the screws, and also to hold them when starting to put washers to secure them. took me 1 and 1\2 hours to install it. 126342

Product was delivered very quickly in appropriate box, there were slight scratch marks on underside so i suggest more plastic wrapping around entire bars. Instructions were just a little ambiguous but not bad. Product shipped with two extra hardware bolts that were not used in assembly. 71627

Fit was good one bolt did not aline up with the car frame very good but was workable. I plan to pull a light weight trailer with the hitch. This is the 3rd hitch I have purchased from ā€œEā€ Trailer over the years. 48665

This hitch went on very easily. I was skeptical that we could get the bolts and backing plates into position with the wire guides provided but it was easy! The fit is excellent. 48723

  • Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendations for a 2002 Nissan Maxima
  • For your 2002 Nissan Maxima the first thing you will need is a trailer hitch. I recommend the Hidden Hitch trailer hitch # 60945. It does not require any drilling for installation. This is a Class I trailer hitch which means that you will only be able to use Class I compatible accessories and are limited to 2 bikes at most. • Hidden Hitch Class I Trailer Hitch Fit for a 2001 Nissan Maxima Anniversary Edition
  • I spoke with my contact at Hidden Hitch and he stated that the Hidden Hitch Class I Trailer Hitch, # 60945, is designed to fit all models of the 2001 Nissan Maxima. The only issue that may arise when installing a trailer hitch on your vehicle is interference with the rear bumper fascia. If your rear bumper fascia sits lower to the ground than that of a base model 2001 Nissan Maxima, then some trimming may be required. I have attached a link to the installation instructions for you to...

  • Carrying a Scooter with a 2002 Nissan Maxima
  • From the information I was able to find, your 2002 Nissan Maxima has a towing capacity of 1,000 pounds and tongue weight capacity of 100 pounds. Because of this you will not be able to carry the scooter on a hitch mounted carrier. Even if a hitch is rated higher you would be limited to the vehicle capacity since it is lower. And the weight of the scooter plus a carrier far exceeds the capacity of the vehicle. However there is a way that you can move the scooter and it also happens to be...
