Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2014 Lincoln MKX - Curt

Today on our 2014 Lincoln MKX, we'll be installing the Curt Class II - 1-1/4 inch trailer hitch receiver, part number C12036. Here is what our hitch looks like installed. As you can see, the only part that really hangs down is the Class II - 1-1/4 inch receiver. This angular plate that is welded here in the bottom of the hitch for safety chains to go onto. As you can see, even small safety chains shouldn't have any real problem going around this diameter here in the front. We have an easy access, 1/2 inch diameter hitch pinhole here to insert our locking device or hitch pin.

This hitch has a 3,500 pound gross trailer weight rating and a 350 pound max tongue weight rating. Now Curt does require the use of a stabilization strap if you are using this for a non-trailer application, such as a bike rack or a cargo carrier. What the stabilization strap does will help support some of the weight here and help raise it up to another part of the vehicle so you don't have all the downward pressure going on it. If you need to purchase one of those stabilization straps, we have them available for purchase on our website. The round tubular frame of the hitch has a nice, high gloss black powder coat finish. It tucks up nicely behind our bumper cover here, so you don't have too much of it hanging down. If you are using it for a non-trailer application, such as using it as a bike carrier or cargo rack, you will need to use a stabilization strap, which is available separately on our website to help support the load. Now for a few measurements to help you in choosing any hitch mounted accessories you may need, such as a ball mount, bike carrier or cargo rack, you're looking at about 5 inches from the center of the 1/2 inch diameter hitch pinhole to the rear most point on our back bumper here and about 13 1/2 inches from the ground to the top of the 1 1/4 inch Class II receiver hitch opening. Now in order to install our hitch, we need to temporarily lower our exhaust, but before we do that, we need to support our exhaust with the strap or with some metal wire or something of that nature, just so we don't cause any damage to it from it hanging down.

We will take this strap here and I'll loop it in to the rear sub-frame, just like so and this will hold it up. Now I'll spray some lubricant on our exhaust hangers here, there is one on either side of the muffler, just so they slide off a little bit easier. We will pry our exhaust hangers off, just like so. Now there is one additional hanger right here in front of the muffler, where our 2 pipes join together in a Y. We'll spray that down as well and we'll use our pry bar to remove it too. Now we need to take down our heat shields, there are 2, one on the passenger side and one on the drivers side.

There are 3 bolts that hold them in place, plus a plastic clip right here. These bolts are 8 millimeter. We will pull out our heat shield, just like so and it comes out. Some wires clipped on the drivers side one, we use a trim panel to remove those, coming from behind and pry it off. Now on our drivers side heat shield here, I already made a mark of a small area we need to trim off, so our bolts for our hitch will have room to clear.

Just using a pair of aviation snips, or tin snips, we'll just trim off the shaded area. Our drivers side is done. Our passenger side is the same way, as you can see, I've marked it off with a yellow paint marker here as well. All right, perfect. Now on our drivers side, we'll take our heat shield here, reattach our wires to the back of it, raise it back up into position, reinstall the plastic panel with a fastener here and secure it with the one bolt right there. I'll tighten it back down with an 8 millimeter. Now on the frame rail here, we're not going to put the 2 bolts back in, because we need the hitch to sit flush up against this frame rail. It will still be secure, because it will be sandwiched between the frame rail and the hitch body itself. Now we'll do the same on the passenger side. Now we will take our fish wire here, insert it into this front hole on the passenger side and we will feed it out through the back of our frame rail here on the bumper. You can see where the fish wire came through in our frame rail right here, now we can take our spacer plate and carriage bolt and thread them on. Spacer plate first, then our carriage bolt. Grab the pole wire and we'll feed these up into the frame rail. Now I'll pull our wire and our carriage bolt comes on down. Just like so, take our pole wire off and we'll do the same for this hole right here. Move our pole wire down and do the same, spacer plate and carriage bolt. Now I'll do the same on the other side. Now with the help of an assistant we'll raise our hitch up, get our 2 bolts started. With those 2 started, we can now use our hitch as a template and drill our holes. Now we use a 17/32 drill bit to enlarge our hole to the final size, so I'm using a step fit that goes out to the same size. This will also make it a little faster of an installation. Now I will do the same on the other side, take our fish wire again, go through it just like so and we'll feed it out the back. All right, got it. We'll take our final spacer plate on the passenger side, feed it on, install our carriage bolt and we'll feed it through the frame. Take our pole wire off now. We can now install our other nut here. We will repeat this process on the drivers side. Now we can tighten everything down. With our hardware all tightened down, we'll torque it to manufacturers specifications found in the instructions. With our hitch torqued down to manufacturers specification, we can now raise our exhaust back up into position. With that on, we will do the drivers side. We can take our strap down now, get it out of the way and we'll reinstall this ford hanger. That completes our installation of the Curt Class II - 1-1/4 trailer hitch receiver, part number C12036 on our 2014 Lincoln MKX.

Installed many trailer hitches over time and this one was the easiest. Only needed to disconnect the left rear exhaust hanger which saved a lot of time. Used a 1/2" drill bit which was fine. Fishing bolts with wire went smooth even though there is very little room at the end of the frame. Make sure you fish the coil thru the hole to the frame end rather than the other way. 70719

2012 Ford Edge

I finally installed my Curt 1-1/4" hitch Saturday. It went in easy on my 2012 Ford Edge. I spent 2=3 hours trying to find the recommended 17/32" drill bit. Finally, I used a 1/2" bit. As in the case of many designed products the designer never actually installs the product themselves, but takes the advice of a well-equipped garage or shop. Sometimes the poor schmoe that's doing the work under a "shade tree" should be given some consideration. For example, I have bought produces that contained the special size of tool or bit if it was really important. It was included in the purchase of the product. The other idea is to use standard sizes and not some obscure size that, in order to get the one special size tool, one has to buy a 300 piece drill set with solid oak tool chest with built-in stereo speakers. Be assured that I didn't buy the tool chest. Yes, I have recommended buying the Curt product to my friends and showed the attached pictures. 33200

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Where to Attach Curt Stabilization Strap on a 2008 Ford Edge to Carry a Bike Rack
  • Curt does not specify where the stabilization strap # 18050 has to go on a vehicle, just that it has to be attached to the vehicle and the carrier in the hitch. Generally you will want the connection point on your 2008 Ford Edge to be higher than where it is attached at the bike rack. It would probably be easiest to attach the vehicle end to the gap between the rear hatch and the body of the vehicle somewhere. If you go with one of the Draw-Tite trailer hitches ( # 75992, # 36447) you...

  • Available Trailer Hitches for a 2011 Ford Edge
  • There are 3 trailer hitch available for your 2011 Ford Edge, I have included a link to them below, but the 36447 hitch that you have referenced will only fit a 2007 model Ford Edge. Of the available trailer hitches that will fit, all but one of them are Class III trailer hitches with 2 inch receivers. You will actually have more accessory options with a Class III trailer hitch than you would with a smaller Class II or Class I hitch. If a Class II, 1-1/4 inch hitch is required, you can...

  • How to Order Replacement Curt Trailer Hitch Hardware for 2012 Ford Edge

To order replacement hardware you would need the part # RHK. On the product page you would need to select the hitch manufacturer and then enter the part number you need.

  • 2013 Ford Edge SEL EcoBoost Hitch Recommendation
  • Curt trailer hitch # C12036 will fit all models except the Sport models of the 2013 Ford Edge including your Limited with the EcoBoost motor. For trailer wiring you would then want the part # C56120. If you plan on doing some towing I recommend the etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. it comes with 2 ball mounts, 2 balls, a hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag. For trailer wiring use # 118472 if the vehicle does not already have trailer wiring. I have included a link to the installation...

  • Recommended Class II Trailer Hitch for 2017 Ford Edge Titanium
  • I do have a solution for you, however the Curt Class II Trailer Hitch # C12036 referenced in your question is not confirmed to fit your 2017 Ford Edge Titanium Model. For a Class II hitch that will fit your Ford Edge Titanium, I instead recommend the Curt Round Tube Receiver Hitch # C12140. This custom-fit hitch will use existing holes in the vehicle's frame for a no-drill installation. It will provide you with a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening and has a 3,500 pound towing weight capacity....

  • How to Pick Out the Correct Rise/Drop Ball Mount to Tow Trailer Level
  • You will want to go with a ball mount that has the amount of rise/drop that will allow your trailer to be towed as level as possible. To do this you will need to take a couple measurements. You will need to measure from the top of your hitch opening to the ground and from the bottom of the coupler on your trailer down to the ground when it is sitting level. The difference between those measurements is the rise/drop that you need. I attached a help article on how to do this as well. Once...
