Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2014 Ford Edge - Curt

Today on our 2014 Ford Edge, we'll be installing the Curt 1 1/4 inch receiver tube hitch, part number C12036. Here's what the hitch will look like once it's installed. Next we'll go and give you a couple measurements. This will assist you with selecting accessories such as a ball mount, bike rack or cargo carrier. In the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer most edge of the bumper is 4 3/4 inches. The top of the receiver tube opening to the ground is 13 1/4 inches. We'll now go ahead with the installation. To begin our install, first lower the exhaust.

To lower the exhaust, locate the manufacturer's rubber isolators to connect metal hangers to the frame. There'll be 1 that comes off each tail pipe and 1 just forward of the muffler. Before we remove these rubber isolators from the metal hanger, put a safety strap underneath the exhaust to help support the weight. With our safety strap in place, to remove the rubber isolators from the metal hangers, spray each one with a spray lubricant. Then use a pry bar or pliers to remove the rubber isolator from the metal hanger.

Once we have the rubber isolators removed from the hanger we use the safety strap to safely lower the weight of the exhaust so we can access above the muffler. Locate the center fascia bracket and fastener. Remove the fastener, pull the bracket out of the way, behind the fascia. Note, before removing the heat shields completely, mark the spots on the heat shield that need to be trimmed in order to get our hardware in the frame. Holding my heat shield in place over the original attachment points, here at the front of the heat shield, cut off the tab that goes into the oval slot and then for our rear hitch attachment, you can see the rear hole in the frame is just covered up so take a small section out of the rear of the heat shield. With our passenger side marked, repeat the same process on the driver side, keeping in mind that each process we do on one side we repeat identically on the opposite side. With my heat shields marked, remove them.

Next, using a pair of tin snips cut out the sections that we marked. With both the heat shields trimmed, set them aside for re-installation later. Install a 1/2 inch carriage bolt and block into the frame through the access hole at the end of the frame behind the fascia. Once we have our hardware and hitch in place, we'll the secure it with a 1/2 inch conical tooth washer, the teeth of the washer will face the hitch and a 1/2 inch nut. Using our 1/2 inch bolt leader that's provided with our install kit, take the bolt leader, feed it through the attachment point and out the end of the frame. Once the bolt leader's in place, then slide on our block and thread on the carriage bolt.

Feed the block and bolt separately into the frame and pull them into position. Leave our bolt leader attached as it will assist with getting our hitch up into position without pushing our hardware back up into the frame. With the forward attachment here on the driver's side done, we'll do our rear attachment point. Again, take our bolt leader, feed it through the attachment point and out the end of the frame. Slide on our block and thread on the carriage bolt and pull them into position. With our driver's side done, repeat the same process on the passenger side. With our hardware in place, re-install the heat shields. Note the fasteners that we removed from the frame will not get re-installed and the heat shield will get sandwiched between the hitch and the frame. Remember here on the driver's side, put the wire hold-down back in place. With the heat shields back in place, we're ready to install our hitch. It's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch while you install the fasteners. Bring the hitch up above the exhaust and feed our pull-wires through the hitch attachment points. Once we have both pull-wires through, bring the hitch up to the frame using the pull-wires to pull the hardware through the hitch. With the forward and center attachment points in place and finger-tight, run them down. Next we use the hitch as a template and drill out the rear attachment point. To drill it out, use a step bit process where we'll start with a smaller pilot bit and work our way up to our 1/2 inch size so that it will fit our 1/2 inch carriage bolt. Once we have our holes drilled out, take the carriage bolt and block, feed them into place through the end of the frame panel and install our flange nut. Once we have our fasteners installed, tighten them down. Torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. Re-install the exhaust. Remove our safety strap and this will complete the install of our Curt hitch part number C12036 on our 2014 Ford Edge. .

I finally installed my Curt 1-1/4" hitch Saturday. It went in easy on my 2012 Ford Edge. I spent 2=3 hours trying to find the recommended 17/32" drill bit. Finally, I used a 1/2" bit. As in the case of many designed products the designer never actually installs the product themselves, but takes the advice of a well-equipped garage or shop. Sometimes the poor schmoe that's doing the work under a "shade tree" should be given some consideration. For example, I have bought produces that contained the special size of tool or bit if it was really important. It was included in the purchase of the product. The other idea is to use standard sizes and not some obscure size that, in order to get the one special size tool, one has to buy a 300 piece drill set with solid oak tool chest with built-in stereo speakers. Be assured that I didn't buy the tool chest. Yes, I have recommended buying the Curt product to my friends and showed the attached pictures. 33200

Installed many trailer hitches over time and this one was the easiest. Only needed to disconnect the left rear exhaust hanger which saved a lot of time. Used a 1/2" drill bit which was fine. Fishing bolts with wire went smooth even though there is very little room at the end of the frame. Make sure you fish the coil thru the hole to the frame end rather than the other way. 70719

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Available Trailer Hitches for a 2011 Ford Edge
  • There are 3 trailer hitch available for your 2011 Ford Edge, I have included a link to them below, but the 36447 hitch that you have referenced will only fit a 2007 model Ford Edge. Of the available trailer hitches that will fit, all but one of them are Class III trailer hitches with 2 inch receivers. You will actually have more accessory options with a Class III trailer hitch than you would with a smaller Class II or Class I hitch. If a Class II, 1-1/4 inch hitch is required, you can...

  • Where to Attach Curt Stabilization Strap on a 2008 Ford Edge to Carry a Bike Rack
  • Curt does not specify where the stabilization strap # 18050 has to go on a vehicle, just that it has to be attached to the vehicle and the carrier in the hitch. Generally you will want the connection point on your 2008 Ford Edge to be higher than where it is attached at the bike rack. It would probably be easiest to attach the vehicle end to the gap between the rear hatch and the body of the vehicle somewhere. If you go with one of the Draw-Tite trailer hitches ( # 75992, # 36447) you...

  • I do have a solution for you, however the Curt Class II Trailer Hitch # C12036 referenced in your question is not confirmed to fit your 2017 Ford Edge Titanium Model. For a Class II hitch that will fit your Ford Edge Titanium, I instead recommend the Curt Round Tube Receiver Hitch # C12140. This custom-fit hitch will use existing holes in the vehicle's frame for a no-drill installation. It will provide you with a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening and has a 3,500 pound towing weight capacity....
