Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario. Technical Support

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2005 Lexus RX 330 - Draw-Tite

Today on this 2005 Lexus RX 330 were going to install part number 75153 from Draw Tite. Alright this is what the hitch looks like once its installed on the vehicle. Next well give you some measurements that will help you out in some selecting some accessories such as a bicycle rack, a ball mount or a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin to the edge of the bumper is going to be about inch and from the top of the receiver opening down to the ground will be 14 inch. Now Ill go ahead and show you how the hitch is installed. For the first step is to go ahead and remove the tie-down bracket and rubber plugs.

Now when you look at the passenger side, it should be identical on the driver side as well. Lets go and repeat for the driver side. At this point we can go ahead and install the hitch. Now its definitely good idea to have an extra hands to help hold up while you run the hardware into the frame. And when we install a hardware, well make sure that the teeth on the conical tooth washer point towards the hitch.

Alright, now youre gonna leave all your hardware loose so you can move it around to help get the bolts in place. With all the hardware loosely installed, now we can go ahead and snug everything down. Once we have the hitch drawn up to the vehicle, we can go ahead and torque everything as specified in the instructions. There we have it for part number 75153 from Draw Tite. .

Overall I'm happy with the DT hitch. I installed it on my 2004 Toyota Highlander. I went for the DT over the Curt because it has the extra hole to use an anti-rattle J-pin. If the Curt had that, I would've probably went that way. Starting with the packaging and shipping: the shipping was pretty quick although it looked like the box had been dropped a few times. One side of the hitch had blasted through the shipping box. This could possibly be remedied by over-wrapping the hitch ends with some thick cardboard or low-E foam in bags to make the ends less of a hard point. The result was minor scuffing of the paint...not a biggie for me. The fit and finish of the trailer hitch was good, not great compared to the Curt hitch I put on my wife's minivan. DT hitch's welds were not as neat and clean and had spatter in various spots. The powder coat didn't look as of high quality as compared to the Curt. It does stick out a bit more than I would like (roughly 1 3/4") but I don't think I'll be banging my shins on it when I'm taking things out of the trunk. A fair amount of the hitch is visible from the rear and I think I just need to get used to the look of it. Overall, its a solid hitch and I'm happy with it. The main reason I bought the DT is because it has the extra hole for an anti-rattle J-pin. But if that isn't a need of yours, you wouldn't go wrong with the Curt hitch. 360770

I recently purchased my third trailer hitch from e-trailer for personal use. The hitch is relatively easy to install, but the wiring can and could be more difficult,. But with e-trailer you tube instillation for different cars, makes it almost a joy. However, I don't have access to a lift, and must do the driveway thing. I also did a modification with the wiring. I measured, and remeasured a couple of times to see if it could a better looking and fixed position rather than having the tell tale appearance with the colored wiring hanging out the tailgate. I double wrapped that wiring with electrical tape and used the plug that is behind the wheel, and about ten inches forward of the hole with the power wire. I removed the plug, cut a hole 1/8 X 3/8, and then cut a line from the outer edge of the plug to that hole. That size worked perfectly for the glued together four wires as a single flat wire. then I went down thru it with the cut toward the front of the car so as to not create a gap in the plug that could widen with the pressure of the wire(s). I then went toward the back of the top inf the hitch bracket where there was a indentation with a fixed small split rubber hose to minimize wiring abrasion, then over toward the center of the hitch. I'm now waiting for the mounting plate for the small bracket (which I have), mounting in a fixed position where it will not be subject to items such as tree limbs etc, and other road debris...won't bother the wiring. Also, when wiring to the battery post, with the movie clip as suggested, there's a small little 1/2 X 1/2 piece to be broken/cut out of the cover plate for the positive end of the battery cable...otherwise the cover won't snap down on both wires. Also saw a previous comment about the receiver part being a nuisance bumping the leg. From previous (e-trailer) hitches, I have a receiver light that is much softer than the hitch receiver, and has a rubber foam surround. The plastic light is much less injurious. The hitch and wiring is no less well engineered. Thank you for your ability for shipping. I ordered the hitch about 1530 one afternoon, and received the hitch the next day around 1430...less than one day via UPS...excellent service. 388513

Hi, Just wanted to put up my review. Orderd parts and they arrived in a timely manner. The box has a huge hole in it due to the good ole post office not etrailer. I was afraid parts would be missing but the way etrailer packaged every thing all was in the box. It took me literally 5 minutes to put take off the tow bars on highlander and install the tow hitch. Wiring instruction were ok but the video instructions were right on and it only took approx 7 minutes to do wiring. Thank you etrailer for a easy project that even a girl can do!!! :- 76917

Are you happy with how far the receiver sticks out below the bumper? I am concerned about which brand to buy.

We have sent an email to Paula letting her know about your question. If she has anything to add, it will appear below her original review so keep an eye on that page.

-- Patrick B - 5/24/2013

Hi Cycling Guy,I am very happy with it. I feel it protrudes out just enough. It literally only took 5 minutes to install with the air hammerjack tool. Etrailer made sure I also got the right wiring I needed and nothing had to be spliced. That took a little longer maybe 15-20 minutes. The video explains everything VERY well. Good luck and have a great day :-

-- comment by: Paula - 05/28/2013

It has been over a year and product still in excellent condition. I use often and it is excellent quality. Etrailer is a great company and would order from them again.

The hitch arrived within a few days and only took about 20-30 min to install. The instructions and the videos were very useful. It was all simple and easy to complete. I selected this hitch as I liked its curved appearance. I also liked that it protruded a bit off the bumper so any tie-downs I set up when using the roof rack don't rub against the bumper. Furthermore, it provides better clearance with the back hatch so it can be opened with some hitch accessories installed. It also serves as a quick platform to step on when using the roof rack. Overall, I am super pleased and have used it several times already. Works great! 110094

Installed by myself on 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid. I used the box and a old carpet covered cat scratch tree just happened to be the right height to support other end. It probably took me 2 hours, but I was in no hurry, and took a couple of breaks. Getting that first bolt or two in part way on either side was the hardest. My 17 mm socket kept was old, and kept falling off the extension, and I should have put a couple turns of electrical tape on it rather than scrambling for it. And my old reading glasses and ball cap fell off a few times. I got some added exercise. Hey, I'm almost 70, so I would expect few are going to have troubles. I would suggest wearing gloves when breaking the existing 14 mm bolts - tie downs free. This makes so much more sense than buying a truck. If I had known it was this easy, I would have done it years ago. The hitch is rugged, don't expect any issues. Cheers! PS - Troy of etrailer agreed with others, this hitch offers the best access to spare tire. 351872

This hitch was amazingly simple to install! I was able to install it myself, in my driveway, without a lift, and using a simple ratchet wrench, in roughly 15 minutes. It took such a short amount of time, that I had only consumed about 1/10th of my beer that I had been planning to enjoy during the installation process. Pros: - Super quick and simple installation - Simple and clear instructions (especially the videos from etrailer) - Excellent build quality Cons: - The aesthetics of the hitch leave a bit to be desired, but then again, this is a freakin' trailer hitch. Initially, I was not too happy with how this made my Lexus look at certain angles, but I'm starting to live with it. I can't say that this is a CON against this particular hitch, because the other brands looked nearly identical for my vehicle. Overall, I'm very satisfied with this hitch, and especially the service that I got from etrailer. 11540

The hitch was a snap to put on the car - EASY!!! Took 15 minutes max from start to finish. It looks well made and rugged. A HUGE negative for me, however, is how far from the back bumper it sticks out. It is easy to knock your shin on it and looks obnoxious. I thought it would be tucked under the bumper or at least flush with the bumper but it is not. I am NOT AT ALL happy with how far it sticks out. The quality, however, does appear to be top notch. If you could make one that doesn't stick out and exchange it I would be 1050% HAPPY!!!!! 36267

Of the three available hitches for my Highlander hybrid, this DrawTight was the one most recessed, so very little but the receiver is visible. Free shipping arrived (UPS) in three days. All holes lined up perfectly. Installed in 20 minutes without jacking or lifting. I had expected it to be fairly straightforward, but it turned out to be rediculously easy. (Don't tell my wife...) 32240

I just bought an 06 Highlander and am looking for a hitch that will NOT stick out too far beyond the bumper. Can you send any photos? If possible I am looking for a side view.Any input from others that have a Highlander and have various brands of hitch would be appreciated. Thanks a lot

I have added links to 3 videos that will show how the 13530 from Curt, the 75153 from Draw-Tite and the 70778 from Hidden Hitch install and fit on the 2006 Toyota Highlander. The videos have a good profile shot in the first minute or so. The Draw-Tite and Hidden Hitch will be close, if not identical in position.

Excellent fit and easy to follow instructions. No special tools needed. Just ratchet wrenches. The hitch is very heavy duty. I originally went to a moving company to have them place a hitch. On the installation day they said the hitch that they ordered for me was "bent" and they could not install it. I cancelled the order and shopped online and found this product. I was amazed how strong the construction is. If this were the product that the moving company ordered, it would never have been bent or damaged in shipment. This e-trailer product would never damage, even if a truck ran over it. I am very pleased with this hitch. 258842

The Draw Tite class III receiver I got for my RX350 was as advertised. Fast shipment and very easy to install. I had to use a clamp to pull one of the mounting brackets into alignment so I could get the bolts in, hence the very good rather than excellent rating. The entire job took about 20 minutes. I still have the much longer job of installing the wiring harness left to do. I installed a similar Draw Tite class III receiver on my 2007 RAV4. It provided 5 years of good service but was rusty after 3 years. Auto makers seem to have solved the rust problem for the most part on their cars. Now hitch makers need to do the same. 49508

Can't wait to tow stuff! I'm deducting one star only because it's pretty hard to persuade a hitch to bend. In the installation video, which was great by the way, the installer had to bend the hitch a little using a 2x4. I tried the 2x4, but the hitch had to move pretty far to get the back hole to line up. So my brother-in-law put his 2 ton jack on end and we cranked it open pushing against the spare tire and the hitch. Whew! Nevertheless, the installation was still very quick and I saved a lot of money by buying the hitch from Etrailer, installing it myself, and not going to my Toyota dealer. 2169

The hitch was as described. We removed 4 bolts with brackets and put in the 6 provided bolts with washers to hold the hitch. Less than 30 minutes including the final torques. Even though the vehicle is 10 years old there was no trouble with rust in the holes that only had the rubber plugs. Photo attached. 358095

Spoke with friendly knowledgeable representative who offered advice regarding wiring kit for trailer hitch. Hitch looks good on my Lexus RX 400h. Due to spare tire's clearance requirement hitch is quite visible but it looks good. At least it does at this point while it is shiny and new. Had professional installation. One hour for hitch and one and one half hour for wiring. Seems reasonable since wiring requires taking the panels out of the vehicle's back compartment. Very satisfied to this point. 106102

Hitch receiver received on time, and fits vehicle just fine. I had it delivered directly to my mechanic's shop, and they had it installed quickly. Haven't used it yet, but it appears sturdy. Sticks out a bit from rear of car, which is a good thing - will give more clearance to open rear hatch with bike rack installed. Bike rack (Swagman XTC-2 2-Bike Platform Rack for 1-1/4" and 2" Trailer Hitches) - (also ordered from is due to be delivered tomorrow so we will see :) 253677

Hitch arrived within two days and was well packaged. I also ordered the wiring harness to go with it and etrailer included it in the hitch package. The online videos on the hitch and wiring were extremely easy to follow and helped immensely. I was able to do the installation within an hour by myself. I can't speak highly enough of Erika who helped me on the phone. I would very highly recommend etrailer to anyone needing parts and advice. Bravo! 229023

Excellent, solid product. Very solid hitch. Had to use a couple of 2x4's and a teenager to lever the holes into alignment to mount on my Highlander, but everything else was very straightforward. Ordered over the phone and the customer service was 1st rate. Shipped regular and it got here in about 2 days. Wouldn't have tried this myself until I saw eTrailers' install instructions on You Tube. Clunky, but good I had to use PEP Boys to install it only because I'm 67 yo and did not have a good wrench to torque down everything. It's a substantial hitch that I'm using with a bike carrier, so Tongue Weight of 350 lbs was right on the spot. It is a bit obtrusive looking, but no one will rear end me with impunity, either. 465

The hitch arrived a day early and installed very easily. I plan to tow a single axle aluminum car trailer with the Lexus instead of the F250 that uses a lot of gas! BTW Lexus has a trailer pigtail that plugs directly into the wire harness without cutting and splicing. 398005

  • General Towing Information for a 2004 Toyota Highlander V6
  • A VIN is not required, just the year, make and model of a vehicle. Sometimes certain configurations need to be stated such as Hybrid engine, 4WD or sport packages. On some vehicles, spare tires need to be removed. The Draw-Tite hitch, part # 75153 does not require removal of the spare tire and yes it can still be accessed. The trailer wiring harness for tow package 2004 Highlanders is part # 118248. The port for the tow package vehicles is located behind the driver side cargo access...

  • Why is Towing Capacity Higher on a 2010 Toyota Highlander with Factory Tow Package than One Without
  • A factory tow package can consist of several different components depending on the manufacturer. Those items could include different suspension, gearing, various coolers, and other items. The bottom line is that you have to go by what the vehicle manufacturer/owners manual says. If your 2010 Toyota Highlander did not come with the factory tow package then you are limited to the capacity specified in the owner's manual for your trim level. Having a higher capacity trailer hitch will not...

  • Recommended Receiver Hitch for 2007 Toyota Highlander Sport Non-Hybrid
  • We currently offer two different hitches available for a 2007 Toyota Highlander Sport. The Curt Class III part # 13530 and Draw-Tite # 75153 would all be good choices. They offer a similar design and would install in the same manner. The Curt # 13530 is rated for weight distribution, with a 4000 lb GTW and a 400 lb TW rating, while the Draw-Tite model is not rated for weight distribution. In this instance, I would prefer the Curt model, due to the high gloss finish Curt uses, and...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2004 Lexus RX330
  • We offer two trailer hitches that are compatible with your 2004 Lexus RX330 and both hitches are Class III hitches that will provide plenty of support to carry a bike rack and bikes. Our most economical option is the Curt Round Tube Hitch, part # 13530. We also offer the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, part # 75153. Both hitches have a tongue weight of 350 lbs and a gross towing weight of 3500 lbs, but these ratings can be limited by the towing capacity of your vehicle. You will want to check...

  • Hitch Mounted Bike Rack Recommendation for an EZ-Sport Recumbent Bike
  • To carry your Easy Sport Recumbent using the hitch on your 2005 Lexus RX330, I would recommend the Swagman XC Extended Bike Rack # S64650-EXT. This rack is an extended version designed to accommodate Recumbent bike. The Swagman # S64650-EXT will accommodate bikes with a wheel base of up to 66 inches and my research shows that the EZ-Sport recumbent bike has a wheel base of 62 inches. The weight capacity of this rack is 80 lbs. To determine if your bike will fit the rack, you will need...

  • All of the available trailer hitches for the 2009 Lexus RX 350, see link, will share about the same amount of visibility. A more hidden trailer hitch is not available. Out of the available hitches, the most popular is the Curt hitch # 13530. If you want to use a bike rack or cargo carrier with this hitch, you must also use a stabilization strap # 18050 per Curt warranty requirements. I recommend the Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 75153. A stabilization strap is not required with this hitch....

Both of the hitches are a Class III 2-inch receiver size and will have a maximum towing weight capacity of 3,500 lbs. The towing capacity of the Curt hitch increases to 4,000 lbs when used with weight distribution. The installation and where the hitch will be located on the vehicle is the same on all three of the hitches....

Both models are very similar in appearance and would install in the same manner. The only difference is that the Curt # 13530 can be used with weight distribution, where it carries a 4000 lb GTW and 400 lb TW rating. I have linked to the...

I recommend installing a trailer hitch and using a hitch mounted bike rack. For a trailer hitch, I recommend the Draw-Tite Trailer hitch, # 75153. This is a Class III trailer hitch with a 2 inch receiver. This Class and size hitch will afford you many bike rack options. I have included a link to the installation instructions...

To complete your towing system, you'll also need a few other items: Trailer wiring harness, part # 118478 Ball mount/trailer ball kit, part # 989900 My research indicates that the RX330 has a maximum 3500lb towing capacity, so the trailer and its cargo aren't pushing the capacity. This hitch has the safety chain loops below the hitch opening whereas the Draw-Tite # 75153 hitch has the safety chain loops above the hitch opening which I think makes them a little less visible. • Assuming that your 2007 Lexus RX350 is equipped with a 2 inch hitch like the Draw-Tite Class III, # 75153, the 24x60 Curt Cargo Carrier, # C18153, would be a great option for your vehicle. To ensure that you will have enough clearance to utilize the folding design of the carrier, you will want to measure from the center of the hitch pin hole to the very back of your Lexus. • Trunk Mounted vs Hitch Mounted Bike Rack for 2005 Toyota Highlander

Hitch mounted racks are generally more stable, easier to install, harder to steal and provide easier rear cargo access. If you do not have a hitch yet I would still recommend you get a hitch and hitch mounted bike rack because once you have a hitch you will have the option to tow a trailer in the future. For...

  • Why are Hitches for a 2005 Toyota Highlander Not Rated for Weight Distribution
  • You're correct. A class III hitch is typically rated for use with weight distribution. However, the Highlnder is one of a few exceptions. According to our hitch manufacturers, a hitch installed on a 2005 Highlander isn't compatible with weight distribution. This is because the vehicle uses unibody construction instead of a conventional frame. A weight distribution system applies a great deal of leverage and torque to the vehicle frame (much more than what would be applied in a normal...

Class III hitches are rated up to 6,000 lbs gross trailer weight with 600 lbs tongue weight depending on the vehicle the hitch is designed for. The Thule Vertex Swing 4-bike carrier weighs approximately 55 lbs (but includes a built-in carrying handle).
