Today on our 1998 Jeep Cherokee, we'll be installing the Curt Hitch part number 13084. This is what our hitch will look like once it's installed. Next we'll go ahead and give you a couple of measurements to assist you with selecting accessories for your new hitch, such as a draw bar, a bike rack, or a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer most edge of the bumper is four inches. From the top of the receiver tube to the ground is sixteen inches. Now let's go ahead with installation. Our first step, we'll go ahead and point out the attachment points here on the passenger's side.
Our rear and two center attachment points will be weld nuts already built into the frame and our forward attachment point will be this weld nut here where the bolt is installed currently. We'll remove that bolt and install a new hardware with the hitch. First, we'll start here on the passenger's side. We'll need to clean out the weld nuts. To do this we'll use some spray lubricate and a half inch nylon tube brush, part number 814092 to thoroughly clean out the threads. We'll go ahead and take our new bolts and thread it in to the weld nut to make sure it's going to go nice and easily.
Now once we've done that for all three attachment points, we're ready to go ahead and remove the forward bolt that is currently installed. We'll go ahead and set that aside as it will not be re-installed and we'll be using new hardware with the hitch. Now we can move over to the driver's side. Point out the mounting locations for our hitch which will be here. We'll be using the pre-drilled holes in the frame. We'll be using carriage bolt and blocks for our forward three attachment points and a bolt and block for our rear attachment point.
We'll need to use the bolt leader provided with our install kit and our carriage bolt and block and feed them into the frame. The easiest way to do this is use the open end of the frame at the rear of the vehicle near the bumper. We'll go ahead and take our bolt leader, feed it through the attachment point and out the end of the frame. Then we'll slide on our block and thread on our bolt. Once we do that, we'll go ahead and feed them both up into the frame and pull them into position. Now that they're into position, we'll go ahead and remove the bolt leader and repeat the same process for the center two attachment points.
Here for the rear attachment point, well be simple using a bolt and block. The end of the frame is open so we can go ahead and set them directly into position. Now we can move over to the passenger's side. We'll be using the bolt and conical tooth washer with the teeth of the washer facing the hitch to secure the four weld nuts. For the driver's side, we'll be securing it with the half inch flange nuts provided with our install kit. Now we're ready to go ahead and put the hitch in position. We'll slide the passenger's side up into position over the exhaust and then bring the driver's side up into place. Be careful not to push your hardware back up into the frame. Now we'll go ahead and secure it with the half inch flange nuts. On the passenger's side we'll be using the weld nut in the frame along with the new bolt and conical tooth washer with the teeth of the washer facing the hitch. We'll go ahead and repeat this same process for our other attachment point. On the driver's side where we installed the carriage bolt and blocks for the forward three fasteners and the block and bolt for the rear attachment point, we'll be using the half inch flange nuts to secure the hitch. With all eight fasteners in place, we're ready to go ahead and tighten them down. Next, we'll go ahead and torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. That will complete our install of the Curt Hitch, part number 13084 on our 1998 Jeep Cherokee. .

Ordered the hitch and wiring on Friday at lunch and it was on my porch Tuesday at 2:00 pm. My suggestions are as follows and may reflect others comments. I regard the following tools as mandatory: an 18mm six point socket for the tailpipe bracket support with an 18 to 24 inch breaker bar, a 12mm x 1.75 tap and 2 good safety stands minimum. Safety glasses too, and remember to chock the front wheels. The first thing to attack is the bracket. Prior to this chase 1 or 2 of the right hand holes with the tap and some cutting oil if you have it. Use one of the bolts in the kit to hold the nut plate in the frame tube in place. Go after the bracket bolt directly from the rear of the vehicle. If you decide to loosen the front bracket bolt it may be easier to remove the right rear wheel to get better access to it. After bolt removal chase the remaining involved holes with the tap. On the left side use a die grinder or round file to extend the 2nd hole from the rear about 3/16 to 1/4 forward to give space for pulling the block forward far enough for the carriage bolt head to feed in from the rear due the the back rail extending upward and limiting access. Place your blocks and carriage bolts, figure out a way to get the hitch up against the frame and use 2 nuts on adjacent holes to hold up the left side. Go to the right side and put in the 4 bolts loosely. The 2 bolts placed close together on the left give a greater amount of wiggle room to locate the right. Place all nuts and washers on the left side, check placement of hitch and tighten down. If happy, torque them all down and you're good to go. It will take longer then 30 minutes. 212901

Very well made. Good Hardware. Fit was good. Online instructions were a plus. But installation needs two people. I installed it myself laying on my back but it was heavy and awkward to lift and align and I needed a set of extra hands several times. I am 6'4 and 250 lbs...yet had difficulty. A smaller person cannot install this hitch them self without help. The hardest part was replacing the original Jeep nut straps inside the frame rails. The originals were badly corroded resulting in the welds of the nuts breaking allowing the bolts to turn and not allowing removal. As a result I had to remove the rear valance, rear bumper and bumper mounting brackets and access the nut straps from the rear of the frame rails. They can be a considerable challenge to remove. After cutting / grinding off the frozen bolts from the bottom...the original nut straps were removed and new straps were ordered. It was no fault of the trailer hitch that the mounting nut rails were so corroded...but it was the most difficult, time consuming hitch installation I have ever done. Not counting the time necessary to order the replacement nut straps...actual installation took over six hours....so be forewarned. Had my 99 XJ not been so rusty and had the original nut straps been in good condition...the installation could have been done in a an hour. Inspect your Jeep before installation and be sure to have replacement nut straps on hand if the originals are rusty, damaged or missing. I first tried to repair and re-thread the original nut straps...but they were too badly damaged. Just order replacements. The nut straps are called "Sill Reinforcement Brackets" and the part numbers are left side : #52001175, right side : #52001174. They are present in many XJ Cherokees from the factory from 1984-2001. But some Jeeps may not have them depending on original options. They were about $22 each and well worth the additional cost. Installation of the hitch without them would have been 10x more difficult. 337196

This is my 3rd hitch from etrailer and another great transaction & install. Easily saves 2-3 times of what it would cost to have it done at a shop. The first 2 hitches were installed on newer vehicles, but this recent hitch was installed on a 1997 Jeep Cherokee. The online videos are a lifesaver! The weld nuts on the old Jeep were rusted really bad, but in the video they explain the best way to clean them out and it works. Their wiring kits are fool-proof & super easy to install. I'll continue to use etrailer for all my towing needs. 195180

took me longer than 40 minutes This hitch is definitely a good buy because it can pull a 5000 lb trailer with 500 lb tongue weight as opposed to the competitors that can only do 3500 lb - 300 lb tongue weight. It is relatively simple to install, BUT takes quite a bit of time. It took me a LOT longer than 40 minutes. It's not that I'm new to installing something myself, but it's because I hit a few snags and I don't have the greatest tools. On the passenger side, there are 2 bolts attached to the frame that hold the muffler that are supposed to be removed to mount the hitch. Threadlock was put on these at the factory, and I do not have a pneumatic wrench thus making it a PAIN to remove them. The ONLY way I could get them off was by putting a piece of pipe over the end of my ratchet for better leverage. The other snag I hit was that as I was trying to bolt the hitch on, it was hitting the bottom edge of the bumper. So I had to undo the passenger-side bolt that holds the underside of the bumper to let the hitch go flush with the frame. In order to put that bolt back, I had to take a Dremel tool to enlarge the bolt hole in the bumper. There is a dent in my bumper which might have caused the bumper to hit the hitch. 5* Reliability - because it is the strongest hitch 5* Performance - also because it is the strongest 5* Ease of Use - how hard can a hitch be to use? 3* Installation - because of my snags mentioned 5* Cost-Benefit - it is cheaper than some of the competitors and stronger than them For some great tips, I recommend watching etrailer's install video at: http://www.etrailer.com/tv-hitch_install_1997_jeep_cherokee.aspx 3179

this is open a 2000 cherokee sport The back hitch was great went right up and all was nice fit just don't take off the bumpier the hitch hides the nuts and make it even harder to get off and on same with the front hitch and you can't put the bottom piece on but of then that it went right up the times they have are after you take the bolts and nuts off and clean it all then you can put them in at that time I broke two in the front and one in the back I had to weld a nut on to them to get them out P.S. the wiring harness is a must have very clean instill with it no cut wires I love that 28458
I bought the #13084 curt hitch for my 96 jeep. Etrailer expedited the shipping at no extra charge and the part was on my doorstep in Virginia 5 days after the I placed the order. I had the hitch installed in an hour after I started. My wife predicted i would be cussing out in the garage like i usually do but i was proud to prove her wrong (this time) :) I used 2 jack stands to hold the hitch in place while i started the nuts on the bolts. Worked like a champ. Also the video was very helpful in showing the steps using the fishwire to install the carriage bolts. I got my christmas present and the next step is the boat for my birthday . Definitely will recommend etrailer to my friends. 110305

The product is constructed for heavy duty long life. The welds are perfect with attention to detail. I purchased the Curt brand because of the added weight rating and tongue weight rating. I had a problem with a weld nut on the passenger side and Rebecca in customer service was outstanding with her support! George and Rebecca shipped out additional parts to me right away and provided me with a video on how to work around the problem. I have nothing bad to say about my experience. This is the second hitch that I have purchased from eteailer and I will be getting a third for our Volvo XC real soon. Even with the weld nut issue if you have an air compressor and impact sockets you can install the hitch in under an hour. I did not have an extra set of hands, I am disabled so I built a rack out of scrap 2x4's and plywood and used my floor jack to raise the hitch and hold it into place. 238360

The instructions say the time to install says 30 - 40 minutes. That would probably be true if there were no corrosion on the nut strip and the installation were done on a hoist. In my case I backed my Cherokee onto ramps for a little more working room. I did cheat by using a forklift to raise the receiver into position....... that was handy, since I did this solo. The "Fish line" is an excellent idea and it took fishing the 4 bolts through to become an expert! My sons Cherokee is next......... I backed off the bolt holding the rear leaf spring-to-shackle, one side only, to make it easier to fit up there......Also installed the wiring kit. Super clean and super easy for an excellent price. This is a real nice installation and the 5,000 Lb rating is Waaaaay more than I will ever put my Cherokee through. My Cherokee is a '98 with 210,000 miles and in perfect pristine condition.......never had a towing setup, but now the wife and I will utilize it for our little tent trailer. Thanks for a great product and great video resources! 139251

This hitch that I received is great, easy installation and the video is spot on. The shipping was insane, ordered it on Monday night and it came Friday, usually things that bulky take 2 weeks or more. I bought the complete towing package which included the two ball mounts and 1 7/8" and 2" balls, and the wiring harness also (which the video for that was awesome too). Took me about 1 hour to install the hitch and wiring harness, but did it by myself. The hardest thing about it was getting the muffler bracket bolt out, other than that it was a breeze. A word of advice that helped me was using the muffler bracket bolt to clean out the other welded nuts in the frame and a lot of WD40 (LoL). But that bolt has the unthreaded end on it and it lined up a lot easier than the supplied bolts. So in closing thanks a million eTrailer, your products are superb and your price is the best thing I liked about my purchase. Thanks again, Jason R. 11749

I received the hitch very quickly and decided not to wait for a second set of hands to help me install it. I don't have access to a lift, so I just back the Jeep up onto a set of ramps, which gave me plenty of room to work. The bolt leader made the install go pretty smoothly and I just supported the hitch on a set of jack stands. Easy enough to line up the bolts. 40 minute install time might be a little misleading... I'd say give yourself a good 90 minutes just in case you run into any snags. Watching the install video was very helpful as well. I also purchased the wiring harness and that was also an easy install. Great product... fast shipping... fairly simple install... one happy customer. THANKS! 9266
it came fast. they upgraded my shipped to expedited for free. I had to drill two holes in the gas tank protectors steel. i then used the jeeps built in nuts that were on a strip in the frame. i used a floor jack to put in the steel gas tank protectors two back bolts and then lifted the hitch reciever with the floor jack and bolted the other bolts in. i had a very hard time taking out the original bolts for the steel protector. I guess after 14 years, they were a bit rusty. they came out with a three foot breaker bar. besides that it is installed. i have the hitch kit with two balls and four types of heights and i installed the connector for the wireing harness and i am all set for trailering my boat! 53672

I have never written a review for any product I have ever purchased on-line, good or bad, but felt compelled to do so for etrailer.com. I ordered a Curt hitch for my 2000 Jeep Cherokee. I did alot of searching and was impressed by the instructional videos provided on their site. I received continuous updates on the shipping of my order and it arrived sooner than expected. The on-line installation video was reviewed prior to the install and the hitch was installed in just about 45 minutes without any problems. I was surprised however that a Curt hitch plug/cover was not included. I will use etrailer.com again and will recommend to anyone in need of any towing products. 36070

Installation on my 01 Cherokee was easy. Some suggestions to cut the time needed. 1 Have a badass air wrench with a swivel joint available for the OEM tailpipe hanger bolt removal, or have a mechanic back it out and bolt it back loosely for you. 2 Use a 12mm x 1.75 tap to clean out the weldnut threads, dont fiddle around with the wire brush option. DO use WD40 or cutting oil. 3 Orient the spacers properly and send them down the wire before pulling the bolts through. 4 If working alone, hold up the left side with a toolbox and loosely bolt up the weldnuts before moving to the hanging bolts. If you do all this, expect a half hour max installation! 77093

I read all of the reviews that were previously posted prior to purchasing this hitch for my 1996 Jeep Cherokee, thus a major reason why I purchased it here. It was shipped and received in a matter of only a few days, arrived in perfect condition and was so easy to install that I am still surprised! I installed the hitch with hand tools, the vehicle slightly lifted and on jack stands in less than 45 minutes. The previous bolts were a bit rusty, but WD 40 took care of that. I did watch the installation video online prior to installing the hitch just to make sure there wasn't anything too out of hand that could happen. I really didnt think it could be this easy! 37197

I purchased the curt trailer hitch receiver for my Jeep Cherokee and installed it myself...by myself. The hitch was a perfect fit all pre drilled holes matching the holes in the Cherokee. I realized that it would be much easier if I blocked up the hitch into position first before I began the bolting on process. I was concerned about fishing the bolts through the channel in the Cherokee and then turning them down through the hitch with the supplied wire snake. It was much easier than expected thanks to the great instructions. I highly recommend this company and their product. All aspects from ordering to installation were better than expected! 344066

This is my second hitch from etrailer. Simple installs with the instructions and supplied mounting hardware. This time I got a hitch and ball mount kit and it couldn't have been any easier. The different ball mount drops fit my trailers nicely. 17511

The product is exactly as advertised. Installatio was a direct bolt-up process with no additional drilling or modifications necessary. The T-One wiring also installed quickly and easily. I was very pleased not to have to splice wires. Etrailer's customer service is to be commended. My order was shipped promptly, and I received personalized emails from the shipping department containing tracking information for the package. I ordered my hitch on Wednesday, received it on Friday, and installed it Saturday morning. I will definitely recommend Etrailer to others! Thank you for a very pleasant shopping experience. 11172

I finally had the chance to install my hitch this weekend, even though it showed up the day after I ordered it. The directions were very clear and easy to understand. After I managed to clean the threads on my Jeep, it only took about 20 minutes to put it on. BUT!!! don't waste your time with a wire brush trying to clean the threads on the nut strip. My Cherokee is 13 years old and the threads showed it. INVEST in a 12MIL by 1.25 TAP!! It will be the best 10 bucks you ever spent... 85079

Product was delivered very quickly and fit perfectly. The online Instructions were spot on. and I reviewed them just before instalation. Package arrived undamaged and the hitch was perfect. Shipping tracking information was great. It di take me about an hour and a half. but that included the one-connect trailer light kit. I did not have any problems, but I am sure if I did, etrailer would have been on top. I highly recomend this company for all your trailer hitch procuctes and accessories 33653

The product was delivered and assembled as advertised. It was very helpful to have the video instruction in addition to the paper instructions. My wife and I just moved across the country and carried 2 bikes on a bike carrier off the hitch and we had no complaints. Very solid product. 71464

The hitch is heavy duty and has performed flawlessly. Installation was a breeze on my 1996 Jeep Cherokee 5 speed, Chevy 6. I have been hauling a 5x8 covered cargo van to our home in SC from MD roughly a 9 hour drive and the hitch works perfectly. I feel very secure with it while going up to 75mph empty and 65-70mph loaded. I highly recommend your hitches they are really quality and like the old good products AMERICAN MANUFACTURED to last. Not chineesee junk. 162291

I HAVE NOT TRIED INSTALL YET BUT UP TIL NOW, CUSTOMER SERVICE AND COMPANY HAVE SURPASSED ALL. I HAVEN'T SEEN CUSTOMER SERVICE LIKE THIS SINCE SOMEONE WASHED MY WINDOWS, CHECKED MY OIL, FILLED THE GAS TANK, TOOK MY MONEY AND THEN BROUGHT ME THE CHANGE. ALL WHEN I JUST PULLED IN TO GET GAS. NO SPECIAL ORDERING OR SHIPPING, ORDERED AT 5PM AND ARRIVED 21 HOURS LATER ON MY FRONT PORCH. "WITH FREE SHIPPING" THAT'S UNHEARD OF THESE DAYS. THANKS! etrailer, Tim 267165

Packaging worked well. Everything intact on arrival. Nice even welds everywhere. Solid even powder coat. Everything seems to be square, find out when I mount it. Hard ware kit is complete. I will spray clear lacquer over the stickers to keep them from damage. Only thing I guess you could call a negative was left over powder coat inside the frame, easily cleaned out with a vacuum. First job is to use it to tow a car trailer, we'll see what else after that. 125626
If your vehicle is newer and the frame channel nuts aren't all rusty, then it should take no more than an hour tops to install this hitch. Most people say that you need two people to install because of the weight. I was able to do it myself with little trouble (and I'm 57 and a year out from rotator cuff surgery. Because of my rusty nuts (on the jeep) it turned in to a 5+hour job. But it's done and looks nice! Can't wait to try it out. 351091

Instructions and Videos on installation of the hitch were very helpful. Installing the T-One wiring Harness was a breeze. So nice not needing to cut and splice wires for the lighting. My one problem with the installation was stubborn weldnuts on the passenger side. They had rusted over time, but suggestions by the technical staff resolved the issue. Highly recommend etrailer.com 's products and technical staff 152893
Ordered a hitch and wiring harness on Saturday and received it on Wednesday. Everything I ordered arrived in one package and was well packed. with the videos online and the instructions, both products installed with ease, well, except that one bolt that we cross threaded, but we got a tap and fixed it with not much problem. etrailer.com is a first rate site with first rate products and first rate customer service. 352321

Removal of the old hitch was a pain, as inferior components allowed the bolts to spin in the frame. I eventually had to cut the bolts off. Installation of the new Curt receiver hitch was a breeze. I've had parts from the factory not fit as well as this did. The holes lined up. The new bolts and other components were high quality. And the "fish line" provided made getting the parts into the frame rail a breeze. 25453

Easy to install and etrailer was great with supplying additional instruction with installation. My only issue was that my Jeep's weld nuts were super rusty, so I had to PB Blast and take a wire brush to them for a few hours. Once that was all finished up the install was a breeze. The hitch overall seems solid I plan on using it for a bike rack and a solid tow spot on my Jeep just in case I get stuck. 52680

I needed a trailer hitch for my 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport. I wanted to add on a bike carrier on a hitch. I went on etrailer.com and saw this Trailer Hitch and read the reviews. I ordered it and it arrived with in a few days. I was surprised how fast the delivery was. I went to my local mechanic and he installed it with no problem. Great product awesome quality and great service from trailer.com 146141

Great product! The video made the installation easy. The hardest part is cleaning out the weld nuts. You really need a thread chaser-but if you cut two slots on either side of one of the the bolts with a grinder it will give the same affect. My hitch was installed 45 minutes after UPS dropped it off and that included cleaning out the factory weld nuts on my 2000 XJ. Etrailer is awesome! 120656

I ordered the Curt hitch for my 2000 Cherokee and had it on my front step in four days. The hitch came with all the installation hardware and easy to follow instructions. A review of the suggested installation video, along with the written instructions made for a simple install. The hitch fit exactly with all mounting holes lining up with the Jeep with no bending or forcing necessary. 88361

Was very impressed at the speed of shipping. Product arrived in excellent shape. Very impressed with the quality and how well it was packed. Only complaint was the nineteen year old bolts I had to remove from vehicle to install the hitch. Instructional videos very helpful and made the paper instructions alot clearer. Will order from etrailer.com again and have recomended to others. 16833
installed the hitch this weekend. mounted perfectly. no issues at all. this is my second purchase from etrailer.com so now both of my Jeeps are ready for when I need them. I highly recommend etrailer.com as they always kept me informed as to the status of my order & the product arrived well packaged so protect it during shipping which was quick as well. great job etrailer! 107623

The complete experience with etrailer was phenomenal. The videos gave me the confidence to know I was ordering the right product & gave me suggestions to make the install as easy as possible. The communication and shipping fast and professional. And the actual product was of high quality - even came with extra parts, just in case. Would highly recommend their service. 83062

Really happy with this. The build quality is very good. Install was easy -- make sure you have a good breaker bar or a pipe to slip over the end of your rachet, this made all the difference for me. My only complaint is that the bag of install materials (nuts + bolts) was open on the inside of the shipping box so everything was rattling around. Nothing got lost, thankfully. 151354

Hello Fellas at etrailer, The trailer hitch is on my Jeep Cherokee, the wiring harness has been clipped in place, the trailer lights has been installed all with the help of my 7 year old son. He is so happy that he helped me with this project. We are now towing our boat out to Henry Hagg Lake for the first time. Thanks so much for everything, Allan R. Evans 97044

Great hitch at a GREAT price This Curt hitch is very nice. It is definitely a quality product. Powdercoat finish is great (very glossy). Installation was kind of a pain, but it always is. I was able to do it by myself. One of the nicer hitches I've had. etrailer price was fantastic and shipping was ridiculously fast. 1549
Hitch went on "without a hitch" as descibed in the very helpful video. The light hook-up was very easy as well and took only a few minutes. Customer sevice was very professional and prompt. I ordered a Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver for my '91 Cherokee from the website and received it within a week. Installation was fairly easy with the help of a friend who had done one of his own before. I'm very satisfied with etrailer. I've since been able to haul my 3500 lb. sailboat and trailer. 43660
Great trailer hitch. The bolt fish wire was a little tricky after the first bolt (didn't want to unthread easily). but got it to last entire install. Customer service and Order placement was EXCELLENT and Fast! Much Appreciated. Would buy from etrailer again, and recommend to friends. 140990

Hitch is well made with a very nice coating. Installed easily as advertised with no fitment issues. I've received many heavy items that were received with broken boxes and missing parts. e-trailer taped all the parts to the hitch so everything arrived despite the broken box. Smart move! 20132

My hitch came fast and it was a great price. My only issue was that I had to go out and buy 4 (7/16-14) bolts because the ones that were included did not fit the welded bolts in my 1998 Jeep Cherokee's frame on the passenger side. Luckily, my local hardware store had exactly 4 left! 141631

Again, this wasn't as easy for me to install since I didn't have a lift or air ratchet. Still, it was easier (and half as expensive) as having it installed by a mechanic or at a trailer rental place. The customer service is OUTSTANDING and I would highly recommend this company. 29508
Unit is solid and well built. Came with appropriate hardware as well. Ended up taking the hitch to a shop to get it installed but this wasn't a fault of the hitch receiver itself. The mounting nuts on the Jeep were rusted from years of being exposed and needed to be tapped out. 199335
