Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2016 GMC Acadia - Curt

Today on our 2016 GMC Acadia, we're going to review an install. The CURT hitch, part number 13424. All right, now here's what our hitch is going to look like once installed. The hitch itself is a robust design for this application. It's got a square cross tube, and goes into a full welded construction. Here on either side of our receiver tube is our easy to access chain hold downs.

Going all the way through the receiver tube, there's our 5/8 pin hole for securing our attachments. This is our class three, two inch by two inch receiver tube. It's capable of up to 500 pound ton weight and a 5,000 pound tow capacity. When coupled with a weight distribution hitch, you can get up to 600 pounds ton weight and a 6,000 pound tow capacity. One of the really nice features about this installation is how easily the fascia door will go back on, even with our hitch in place. It covers up that hitch when it's not in use.

Simply put the fascia back in place and lock down the two corner tabs, and now our hitch is completely covered. We're ready to head on down the road. Then once we're ready to use our hitch, with our trailer or accessory, simply unlock those two corner tabs, pull that fascia door off, and our hitch is there and we're ready to hook up and head on down the road. Next, I'll give you a couple measurements to assist your selecting accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper is 4 1/2 inches. From the top of the receiver tube opening down to the ground is 18 inches.

This will assist your selecting accessories such as a ball mount, bike rack, or cargo carrier. To begin our install, we need to remove the rear fascia panel. To do that, we simply unlock it, one on each corner, and we'll pull it down. It'll release the fasteners here across the top. Next, we need to lower the exhaust, but before we do that, we want to put a safety strap in place to help hold the weight of the exhaust once we remove the hangers. We're going to have a total of three rubber isolators that need to be removed from the metal hangers.

To do that, we'll first spray each one with a spray lubricant. We have one here on the inside of the muffler, one on the outside of the muffler, one forward of the rear axle, just behind the front muffler. To remove each one of these rubber isolators from the metal hanger, we're going to use a pry bar or pliers just to slide one end off. Just like that we've lowered the exhaust, and exposed the frame rail. Now, we're going to have a total of six attachment points, three on each side. These attachment points here in the bumper beam are pre-drilled holes. Note, in some application they can also be well nuts. You'll have hardware for both options. Here at the frame rail, we're going to have two weld nuts. These weld nuts are built into the frame by the manufacturer, so only simply add hardware to secure the hitch. Before we attempt to install the new hardware, we're going to want to clean out the weld nut, because over time they build up with rust, dust, dirt, and debris. To clean it out, we're going to use a spray lubricant, and our half-inch nylon tube brush, part number 814092. We'll thoroughly clean out the threads of that weld nut to make sure our new fastener install nice and easily. Now, for each of the weld nuts, we're going to have a 12 millimeter bolt. Those will be supplied with the install kit. Now we know it threads in nice and easily, we'll go ahead and repeat the same process for the remaining weld nut attachment points. For each of the weld nut attachment points, we're going to have the 12 millimeter bolt and half-inch cockle tooth washer. The teeth of the washer will face the hitch, as the bolt will go through the hitch attachment point and then into the weld nut. For applications like this one that just have the pre-drilled holes here in the bumper channel, we'll be installing a half-inch carriage bolt and block. We'll feed them into place, down through the attachment point, and then once the hitch is in position we'll install our flange nut to secure it. To get our hardware in place, we're going to use the half-inch bolt leader that's supplied with the install kit. Let's go ahead and starting installing our hardware here into the bumper channel. We'll take our bolt leader, feed it through the attachment point, and out the end of the frame. Once we have access to it, we'll go ahead and install the block, sliding it onto the bolt leader. Then we'll take our carriage bolt and thread it into the end. Next, we'll feed them into the bumper channel separately, first the block and then the bolt. Now, using the bolt leader, we can pull them into position. The bolt will engage the block, and we'll go ahead and leave the pull wire attached, which will assist with getting our hitch up into place without pushing that hardware back up into the bumper channel. Keep in mind, each process we do here on one side, we have to repeat identically on the opposite side. There's all of our attachment points and hardware the same. We're now ready to install our hitch. It's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch while you install your fasteners. We'll feed the pull wires through the center attachment points, and then bring the hitch up to the frame. Once we have the hitch up to the frame, we can go ahead and install our bolt into the weld nut, and it'll hold the weight of the hitch. Keep in mind as we install each fastener to just tighten them down hand tight this time. Once we have the bolts in place, we'll go ahead and remove the pull wires and install our two flange nuts to secure the hardware here at the center. Just like that, we've got all our hardware in place, and we're ready to tighten it down. All right. Now with all our fasteners tightened down, we'll go ahead and torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. Now with all our fasteners tightened down and torque specifications, we'll go ahead and reinstall the exhaust. Once we have the exhaust back in place, we'll go ahead and remove our safety strap. Just like that our hitch is installed, and we're ready to hit the road. That will do it for the review and install of our CURT class three, two-inch receiver tube hitch, part number 13424, on our 2016 GMC Acadia.

Yes the curt trailer hitch reliever was easy to install as you said that it would be. I was pushed for time and had to do it at night in the cold weather, but it was done in time to pick-?? my uhaul to load and head to Pittsburgh the next day. Thank you for sending it out so soon. Your website was easy to use. Product was just what I needed for my 2012 Enclave. 235817

Installation wasn't bad, and pretty much what the instructions said for a 2010 Traverse LS. The hardest part was probably chasing the rust out of the threads in the mounting holes since the road salt hadn't been kind to them and I bought it used. Lots of penetrating oil and going back and forth on the bolts to get them to thread in. I did need to grind the access holes slightly to get the heads of the mounting bolts through. I had better luck putting the spacers in place first, then threading the fish wire through the spacer and the mounting hole to pull the bolts in place. There's enough room to get the bolts past each other in the channel. Leave the fish wires attached to the bolts until the hitch is in place. Removing the muffler hangers will make it much easier to get to the mounting bolts on. All told, it took me probably 1.5 hours, but I was working by myself, and the first half hour was spent just getting the mounting holes clear. 178324

Very easy install on my 2013 GMC Acadia. It took me about 40 minutes to install (and I was taking my time). It came with easy instructions and everything that I needed to install it (including the wires to fish the bolts through the bumper). Overall, I am very happy with this product. 89748

I havent had any issues with it and am still fully satisfied with the product.

Item came quicker than promised. I had the dealership install hitch. They did in about 30 minutes and it looks great. Mufflers do need to be dropped in order to install frame bolts . Just a suggestion if you have a dealership that you regularly go to it's worth it to have them install as they have the correct tools to do the job. 215173

I purchased this hitch for my enclave. the etrailer site allowed me to just enter my vehicle details and it told me which one i need and provided a video and picture of how it worked and looked. Great site, easy to use and the hitch was excellent and sturdy as well. I decided in the end not to put it on as it is in the high 90's here in Florida. Just didn't feel like crawling under the truck. However I did talk to the mechanic shop that installed it for me and they said it is one of the easier after market hitches and wiring kits they ever installed. I used Christian Brothers Automotive in North Port Fl who were just fantastic as well. 277768

I'm just your run-of-the-mill exceptionally satisfied customer. Full disclosure: I'm a cheapa$$. After I found what I wanted from etrailer, I surfed the part numbers looking for a cheaper source. After a few minutes, I asked myself "what the heck am I doing? has put up the money and time in a great website and fantastic how-to videos, and even if they're more expensive, they *deserve* my business - they earned it." So I bought. Additional full disclosure: nobody was cheaper. Don't waste your time looking. Oh, the hitch and wiring kit fit perfectly. What else would you expect? 64625

Install was as easy as it gets, you need extra time to clean out thread holes, I don't recommend using an impact gun to run bolts in , chances are you'll snap the bolt because of the rust and crud in the threads, run the bolts in and out like a tap. The carriage bolt install wire worked gods however it was a bit short I just taped the other on to it there was two shipped. Great setup, well made the welds were very nice . We went to the Outer Banks , I needed the hitch for luggage rack . Thanks again for speedy delivery!! 400921

Bought this hitch to install on a 2011 Chevy Traverse. Easy to install, my car didn't have the weld nuts at the rear, but everything I needed was included in the kit. It was a little challenging snaking the bolt through the frame but not too bad. The hitch fit great and looks great. Directions were easy to follow. The only thing I'd add, is that on older vehicles, plan on chasing the threads on the weld nuts. Someone suggested this to me, I'm glad I did it, made the job much easier. 286078

etrailer service and delivery were excellent. Reciever fits to position as instructional videos say. Took me an hour to install - that's what I expected. I ran into difficulty with the space in access holes and spacers at bumper part of mount... had to improvise just a bit. There is a small problem to address with contact with the muffler for my 2011 Traverse, but I'm hoping for an easy adjustment of some kind to give a little bit more room. Thanks e-trailer! 32497

I have a new GMC Acadia 2012. The installation was easy and fast. We (I had a helper) installed the hitch even without lowering the car exhaust. It took around 15 minutes. The only tool needed was 19mm (or 3./4") wrench. Very good product and well made. 47517

I have a question.... I was told that since we didnt get the tow package factory that we should not tow anything more than 2000 lbs.... do you know if this is true?

-- comment by: Michele - 07/22/2013

It is possible, but does not seem very likely for this vehicle family. Check in the owners manual, there should be a section on towing that will outline capacities based on exact model and configuration. You can also contact GM headquarters with your VIN and they should be able to help you determine the towing capacity.

Perfect Alignment! All the bolt holes lined up correctly, easy to install even for someone who doesn't do things like this very often. It's great that the bumper cover goes back on to hide the hitch when not in use and the entire assembly in completely concealed. Instructions were very clear and easy to follow. Great Product! • Hitch Recommendation and Rear Fascia Removal for a 2015 Chevy Traverse
  • I am sure that with enough trimming you could find a way to be able to reinstall the fascia door of your 2015 Chevy Traverse, but Draw Tite recommends it just simply get removed and not reinstalled when installing the # 75528. The Curt hitch # 13424 that is also confirmed as a fit for your vehicle has installation instructions that indicate that the panel could be reinstalled if desired on some models

  • Selecting Ball Mount for 2-Inch Class III Hitch on 2009 GMC Acadia
  • If your choice of ball mount rise or drop means being a little high on the Acadia side this is usually preferable to the trailer being higher. With any trailer and vehicle there will always be a bit of vehicle rear-end squat from the trailer's tongue weight (TW). This means that if the hitch ball is a bit taller than the level trailer's coupler this is okay since this greater height on the vehicle side will offset the squat. Please refer to the linked article on ball mounts for more...

  • Can Rear Fascia Panel be Replaced After Installing Curt Trailer Hitch # 13424, 2011 Chevy Traverse
  • You will notice in the instructions that I have linked for Curt Trailer Hitch, # 13424, that it states that the panel in question may be reinstalled on some models. So I spoke with my contact at Curt to determine if the 2011 Chevy Traverse was a model that it could be reinstalled on. He stated that they did not have information on the 2011 but on the 2010 it can be reinstalled. Basically, if the rear fascia is the same on the 2011, then it will fit. But if it has been redesigned, it...

  • Fascia Re-Installation After Installing Draw-Tite 75528 on 2013 Buick Enclave
  • We offer two brands of 2-inch Class III trailer hitch for your 2013 Buick Enclave and both will install in the same spot on the vehicle's frame. Both hitches can be seen on the link provided; both share the same installation note that the fascia door panel must be removed for hitch installation and possibly cannot be reattached. We do not offer any hitch that avoids this potential requirement. You may be able to trim this panel satisfactorily in order to re-install it. Of the three hitches...

  • Hitch Receiver and Wiring Recommendation for 2015 Buick Enclave
  • I spoke with my contact at Curt and the Custom Fit Trailer Hitch Receiver, #13424, fits the 2014, as well as the 2015 Buick Enclave. The wiring harness that you will need for your Enclave is the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector, # C56245.

  • Tow Ready Wiring Bracket Recommendation for a Curt Hitch on a 2012 Buick Enclave
  • You would want to purchase a Tow Ready Mounting Bracket # 18144 to go with the Curt Hitch # 13424 as it does not come with a bracket to mount the trailer wiring. For a no drill option for a mounting bracket check out the # 18140. Unfortunately you could not reuse the trim cover to cover the hitch when not in use. The hitch protrudes too far out the back of the vehicle in order for the cover to be reinstalled. Check out the installation instructions and installation video that I...

  • Can A 7-Way RV Trailer Connector Be Used with only 4-Way Wiring Installed on a 2008 GMC Acadia
  • Yes, you can use a 7-Way RV wiring harness on your 2008 GMC Acadia without tow package. You will first need to install the T-One Vehicle Harness with 4 Pole Trailer Connector, item # 118451, which will plug inline with your vehicle tail lights, see instructions and video link. You will then need to install an adapter like # 37185. This adapter will plug into the 4-Way connector previously installed and the extra wires can be tied up out of the way for future use. A bracket is included for...

  • What Hitch On 2009 Buick Enclave Will Allow The Rear Fascia Door To Be Used
  • The hitch I have for your 2009 Buick Enclave that will allow you to reattach the fascia door after the hitch has been installed is the Curt Trailer Hitch, # 13424. It is a bolt-on installation, no drilling required. I am sending a link to the installation instructions for that hitch. As far as the fascia door with a bump for factory hitches working on the other hitches, I called my supplier on the Draw-Tite Hitch, # 75528, and the Hidden Hitch, # 87435, and they said that you would need...

  • Can Rear Center Fascia Panel be Reinstalled After Curt Trailer Hitch is Put on a 2009 Buick Enclave
  • In my experience the fascia trim panel cannot be replaced on the Buick Enclave vehicles after the installation of any of the hitches that are available for that vehicle. This is because the fascia for the Enclave is shaped differently than the ones for the Traverse. I posted a photo that one of our customers sent in showing how he trimmed that center fascia piece so that he could reinstall it on his vehicle. We also have a hitch install video on a 2012 Enclave for you to review, see link. We...

  • How to Determine Hitch-Mounted Cargo Carrier Weight Capacity on 2010 Chevrolet Traverse
  • The Curt Class III hitch # 13424 that fits your 2010 Chevrolet Traverse LT2 has a tongue weight (TW) capacity of 500-lbs when used with a hitch-mount cargo carrier like their # C18150. (TW is downward force on the hitch.) The vehicle weight rating that matters for this kind of application is the car's TW. This is usually about 10-percent of the gross towing capacity and should be noted in your owner's manual. I checked an online version of the 2010 Traverse manual for its TW rating but...

  • How to Fix Exhaust Rattle After Trailer Hitch Install
  • This is a fairly common problem that has a fairly simple solution. What you will need to do is reposition the exhaust of your 2010 Chevy Traverse so that it is far enough away from the hitch that it will stop rattling against it. For more info on how to do this check out the help article and video I attached. Basically you will either have to bend the exhaust hangers slightly or use different length hangers.

But you won't have to route a power wire at all if you use trailer wiring harness # 118270 on your 2016 Chevy Traverse. It plugs into a factory connector already on the vehicle and includes the relays and fuses to make it active. I have linked a video showing an example installation for you.

  • Hitch Recommendation for a 2014 Buick Enclave to Use the Thule Transporter Combi Cargo Carrier
  • As long as you have a hitch with a 2 inch opening like the Curt hitch part # 13424 yes, the Thule Transporter Combi Hitch Mounted Enclosed Cargo Carrier # TH665C that you referenced would work well on your 2014 Buick Enclave. • Folding Hitch Cargo Carrier Recommendation for a 2010 Buick Enclave that Will Fold Up
  • To determine if the Curt Cargo carrier part # C18100 that you referenced will fold up and clear the rear bumper of your 2010 Buick Enclave will require you to take one simple measurement. You will need to measure from the center of the hitch pin hole to the furthest point out on the rear bumper. If that distance is less than 5 inches this carrier will fit and work well. When we installed the # 13424 on a very similar 2010 Buick Enclave we found that dimension to be 5-1/4 inches....
