Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2003 Ford Explorer Sport Trac - Hidden Hitch

Today on our 2003 Ford Explorer Sport Trac, we're going to install part number 87008 from Hidden Hitch. This is what the hitch looks like once it's installed on our Sport Trac. Next we'll give you some measurements to help you out in selecting some accessories such as a ball mount, a bicycle rack, or a cargo carrier. From the top of the receiver opening down to the ground will be about 17". From the center of a hitch pin hole to the outside edge of the bumper, will be about 3-1/4". Now I'll show you how the hitch is installed. First off, we'll show you where the hitch attaches to the frame of our vehicle. First it will attach here at the bottom of the frame at the end. Also, there's an oval hole here that the hitch will attach to.

This is the passenger side. On the driver's side, it will be the same way. Here's our existing hole here and our oval hole. On the driver's side, we've got some wires in the way. I like to remove those to get them out of the way before we install our hitch and reroute them. You can pry them off with a screw driver.

I'm using a trim panel tool to help remove them. You can probably zip these out of the way, because the hitch will take up this area. I like to do is actually disconnect them right here and run them over the top of the bumper structure. That way you don't have to worry about getting them anywhere near the suspension that moves back and forth. Push in this tab and pull the connection apart. There's one on top, too, that's a little bit harder to move.

I'll pop mine loose here. If you push up on this tab here with a screw driver, you can release it and then pull it apart. We're just going to run our wires back over the top and snap them back together. Now that we've got these plugged back together, you won't have to worry about the wires being in the way of the hardware of the hitch. Next we'll show you how the hardware works for the hitch. On the holes on the bottom of the frame, we'll get this block and a carriage bolt. This will go through the frame and then through the hitch. Underneath we'll get a conical tooth washer.

Make sure the teeth in the washer always stays towards the hitch and a nut. For the hole in the side of the frame, we'll get the hex bolt and a thin block. This will go from the inside to the outside of the frame. Between the hitch and the frame, we'll also get this thicker block. Then on the outside of hitch we'll get a lock washer and then the nut. This will be the same on both sides of the hitch. Let's take our carriage bolts and blocks and put them on the bottom of the frame first. That helps to put the block in first, then the carriage bolt, because this nut gets in the way a little bit. With an extra set of hands, we'll put the hitch up into position. It's a tight fit, so it's a good idea to have something to support the hitch or a good friend that likes little things. Let's put our bolt and block into place into the oval hole just enough to get it started. Then we'll install our thick block. We got through the block but not through the hitch. We'll rotate the hitch and move it around as needed, line it up, and put the bolt through. There is it. Then our lock washer and nut. Now we're done with the passenger side. Let's do the same thing on the driver's side. At this point, will all our hardware loosely installed we'll tighten down the bolts. Then we'll torque them down as specified in the instructions. When you hold the bolt down from the inside, there's really not much room. You have to put your wrench at an angle to help get ahold of it. With all the bolts torqued down, that will finish it for our install of part number 87008, from Hidden Hitch Trailer on our 2003 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. .

This would of been an excellent rating but the mount I recieved had one problem.. the L-shaped bracket that bolts to the bottom of the drivers side frame was welded on crooked, so the hole did not line up with the hole in the frame. But luckily for me, I have access to a well stocked garage and was able to work around that. If I hadn't I would of had to return this for a replacement. This wasn't any fault of E-trailers it was in the manufacture of the mount from Hidden hitch and just something that must of slipped through their QC department. Aside from that one defect the mount appears to be very sturdy and well made.. Overall I am pleased with my purchased. E-Trailers was very fast with shipping. 75822

This was not my first Hidden hitch, nor will it be my last. The hitch is very well engineered and manufactured. The packaging ensured that my hitch arrived to my door undamaged with all hardware secure. I installed the hitch myself in about 20 minutes in my garage and it aligned perfectly. The shipping was fast! Another satisfied customer, thank you etrailer! 33543

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2001 Ford Sport Trac Automatic Behind a Winnebago Adventurer
  • We have everything you will need to flat tow your 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac behind your Winnebago Adventurer, but before attempting to tow, I strongly recommend checking your owners manual before proceeding. From what I could find, the 4WD models with the electronic shift transfer case and automatic transmission cannot be flat towed. Ford also has distance and speed restrictions when flat towing this vehicle. To flat tow your 2001 Ford Sport Trac Automatic behind your Winnebago...

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 1997 Ford E-150 Van and 2004 Ford Explorer Sport Trac
  • The 1997 Ford E-150 van and the 2004 Ford Explorer Sport Trac were built on different platforms and frames so the trailer hitches for each are not interchangeable. It sounds like you need a hitch for the 2004 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. I have linked the hitches available. For the most popular option use # 87008. I have linked the instructions for you. To complete your towing set up I recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It includes 2 ball mounts, 2 balls, a hitch pin with clip,...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for 2002 Ford Explorer Sport Trac 2WD
  • Hidden Hitch trailer hitch # 70647, which you referenced, is a confirmed fit for the 2002 Ford Explorer, but not the Sport Trac model. For the Sport Trac model you will want the Hidden Hitch Trailer Hitch # 87008. To complete your towing set up I recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It includes 2 ball mounts, 2 balls, a hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag. And for trailer wiring use # 118344. For install details and some product demonstration videos, click the provided links.

  • Mounting Bracket for a 4-Way Trailer Connector on a 2002 Ford Explorer Sport Trac
  • The trailer wiring for the 2002 Ford Explorer Sport Trac, # 118344, can be secured to the trailer hitch using a bracket and mount for the 4-Way. I recommend the mounting bracket # 18144 with short arm # 18140 or long arm # 18136. The arms just clamp around the hitch and the mount attaches to the end of the arm. You do not want to drill into the hitch because it voids the warranty and can compromise the structural integrity of the hitch.
