Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Smooth install!
2008 BMW X5
Only
one minor change in the instructions, the bumper fascia trimming needed to be about 3" deep instead of the 2 inches indicated in the included instructions. I should however mention the my X5 has the M package which has a slightly different rear bumper fascia and the extra trimming may be unique to the M but I'm not sure. see pictures looking up at the hitch that show the required trimming. The trimming is not visible unless you look at it from a vantage point that is below the level of the bumper. I am very happy with the look and ease of install.

Searched for a hitch that did not require a visible section of the bumper fascia to be cut out of the X5. This hitch did not and tucks neatly under the fascia. You rated the installation difficulty 9/10, and I believe this was accurate. Fit and finish was great. Not a fan of having the connection to the trailer a long cord that hangs out the tail gate when in use. I routed the wire down to the hitch before re-installing the bumper fascia and attached it with a bracket. Installation and wiring videos are excellent and key to the success for the DIY individual. Upon ordering, etrailier reported the hitch was in stock, but this turned out to not be the case. Etrailer customer service were great at keeping me informed and minimized the delay. Well done!

I am curious...You mentioned not having to cut the fascia but the instructions state that it needs to be cut. Can you help me understand if the instructions are wrong or if different year or trim of the car makes a difference? Thanks

Patrick B.

1/23/2014

The visible section of the bumper fascia does not need to be trimmed, which is what Greg mentioned in his review. There is an under-fascia that is below the bumper and not really visible when standing. It is attached to the bumper cover, but is a separate piece that is not the same color as the rest of the body. This piece will need to be trimmed. You can see the procedure starting at about the 4:50 mark in the video.

This is a barebones hitch that fits well with very little modification for the installation.

2014 BMW X5

Bought the 75600 Draw tight hitch for my 2014 BMW X5. Installed the wiring harness two week ago. The hitch install took about three hours total. Watched the install video. Make sure you take pictures as you go just in case you don't remember exactly how it goes back together. I was not able to remove the bumper completely away from the car. I was not able to remove the sensor plug and did not want to break it. I still was able still install the hitch. I did not have to trim the fascia it fit perfectly. The rubber protective covers that go over the top bolts need to be trimmed about 1/4" shorter so they stay on the bolts. Great product and install was easy.

2007 BMW X5

Easy to install, bolted right on (after the bumper was removed, which was pretty easy too!). Also on some other brands of hitches for the 2007 BMW X5 it would make the tow screws unavailable, but this hitch leaves them available and not blocked! Also the best part is that the bumper face did not need to be cut which is better than even the OEM one from BMW! (you do need to cut a small part off but that is facing the ground so you dont even see it!).

Mine is an BMW X5 2007 one hitch I looked at had to drill one hole in center of sub frame

Patrick B.

All of the hitches we carry for the 2007 BMW X5 do no require drilling additional holes into the vehicle, but the may require some fascia or panel trimming.

Fantastic! Works great

Installed it myself. Took about 3 hours. Video instructions were great. No cutting of the bumper for my 2014 X5, and only thing that didn't match my experience was that the rear reflectors don't come out they way the say in the video. Otherwise the unit tucks up under the bumper cover real nicely.

Ive been using the hitch with a Thule hitch rack for the last year. The hitch is still rock solid, and looks like new. Its been a great investment.

Perfect fit for BMW 2012 X5 , two hours from start to finish but mainly, taking bumper cover off and wiring.
A+ product

2013 BMW X5

Etrailer is the best. Here are some detailed notes from my install on my 2013 BMW x5, non M package.
- The wheel flanges come off easily, but you will likely snap the white plastic rivets. Have 2-3 in reserve.
- Torque spec is 65ft-lb
- Removal of plastic outer fascia is not easy. You have pull hard but slowly pry the panel off. You will likely break some of plastic connectors.
- Like another review said the plastic bolt covers will be too long. I used my angle grinder with a sander flap wheel to grind off 1/4" of material. I then squirted some silicone adhesive in each cap and shoved them back on each bolt. - Finally, trim that bumper cover 8.25" wide by 2.75" to get a good tight fit around the hitch assembly.

2016 BMW X5

Total experience with the product was excellent. I have a 2016 BMW X5 50i with “M” trim. I received the hitch in a couple of days. I have a friend in the Auto Body business that installed for me. Cost me $100 and a couple of beers. He followed written instructions and watched your 10-minute video. He said there were minor differences but nothing that caused a problem. My rear bumper did NOT have to be cut. There is 1/4” clearance between top of hitch and bottom of bumper. Everything about this experience has been excellent. I plan to use a Thule 4-bike rack with the hitch. Thank you!

I am mechanically inclined (thanks dad!) and so after finding out that my local Uhaul would charge $225 to install a hitch not purchased from them, decided to just do it myself as I had originally planned when I bought this hitch from eTrailer.com.

The most cringe-worthy part of this installation is that feeling of ripping the side of the rear bumper cover of your beautiful late model X5 apart and hearing those nasty popping sounds as evidenced in the video. Lest you feel you need to spend $150-$225 to have someone else install this hitch, I will attest to the fact that it is not that bad at all. If you change your own oil, rotate your own tires, or don't ever have to pause and recite "lefty loosey, righty tighty" then you're a great candidate to perform your own installation!

The video was key to making this an easy installation. I put my laptop on a bench next to my car while I played/paused each step and simply followed along. The toughest part of the installation was unclipping the rear bumper sensor wiring harness. It just did not want to release. That took me a good 25 mins.

This installation is definitely a two person job. I would never attempt this without a good helper with steady hands. A second person is definitely needed when realigning the rear bumper tabs with the rear bumper mounts and side mounts when buttoning everything back up.

I had to cut out a little extra space in the lower rear bumper fascia to get everything to sit right. I have the X5 50i with M Sport Pkg, so the rear bumper has additional design features that I do not believe are shared with the other trim levels. Three test fits and it was good to go.

The only thing I did not like about this kit was the supplied plastic rivets. The instructions call for a 5/32" rivet tool, which I have. The plastic rivets do not fit into the rivet tool. Not only that, but they did not actually fasten at all. I have to goto BMW tomorrow to buy OEM ones. Minor flaw, and I believe I read the other reviews with similar findings. No biggie, but it would be nice to have better quality rivets.

I am very satisfied with this hitch and the installation instructions. Here are some pics of my bike rack installed in the hitch on my 2013 X5 50i M Sport. :)

2009 BMW X5

I installed a Draw-tite hitch form etrailer.com on my BMW X5 and the whole process went very smoothly. The instructional video they provide is spot on and covered every detail and actually showed the install on my model of car, a day after the install I towed a U-Haul trailer home from out of state with zero problems. The hitch is used regularly for my bike carrier and does a great job. I was totally impressed.

2011 BMW X5

If your contemplating on which hitch to get, The Draw-Tite, Reece and Hidden Hitch are identical. Mine actually had a sticker with both names on it. Like others have said, the powder coat chips easily, mine had minor chips from shipping. This didn't bother me, before I installed it, I coated the entire hitch with 1 Qt. Herculiner Bed Liner. If your worried about long term use and rust, coat it with a rubber compound. Installation took 1/2 day. Hardest part was removing and re-installing the fascia (plastic bumper). I had to trim a 2"x8" of the lower fascia. Hitch looks nice on my 2011 BMW X5 35d and 1/4 the cost of the dealership. Works with rear sensors and the screw in attachments are still available.

Straight forward install. Strong product. Suited for do it yourself-er with a modicum of tools and ability. Holds motorcycle rack with m/c (500lbs total) well at highway speed.

2015 BMW X5

The receiver is exactly as described on the website. I completed the installation by myself in just over 3 hours. The video was the best part. Without the video (I actually referred to the videos for several model years), I would never have figured out the correct sequence to remove the rear valance. The video made the process easy to follow and included several helpful tips. The replacement pop rivets purchased from BMW (5mm shank) are bigger that a standard 3/16 inch rivet gun will accept. The best part of the installation was that no cutting was required. The rear valance on my 2015 X5 was already cut perfectly to accept the Draw-Tite receiver. It provides what looks like a factory installation. The receiver enables the use of a rear-mounted rather than a roof-top bike rack. Just what I was looking for.

2017 BMW X5

Installed on 2017 X5 i35 MSport package. Although the listing states "excluding M performance models" by the manufacturer, it fit perfectly! I had my laptop in my garage and was following the instruction video as I was going through the process. I read other reviews and gave myself plenty of time to not rush and break anything. I bought a set of plastic pry tools for $8 to not scratch the plastic parts on removal. It took my about 3 hours which includes a trip to Lowe's to buy a longer socket to take out the 4 bumper beam nuts. I did not have to cut the bumper fascia and hitch comes out the back with a 1/4 inch clearance from plastic.

by:

I received one initially. I removed the bumper cover and found out that hitch didn't fit After a quick call, Hally C realized that one was for newer BMW X5. I told her the year of my BMW and she was able to ship me a new one.

The installation was quick after I received the correct part. There were a few minor things to adjust before installation.
1) cut out a notch at the bottom of the plastic cover
2) Relocate the electric connector.

I also got full refund of the wrong one I shipped it back to etrailer.
It took about 10 days.

Excellent product with no issues for the last year.

2017 BMW X5

Installed on 2017 X5 i35 MSport package. Arrived faster than expected, and in perfect condition. Printed and video instructions are outstanding. Completely installation in 2.5 hour. Purchased the tools I need with the savings - a bonus for sure. Picked up a nice torque wrench for $50, a plastic rivet gun and rivet puller for $35, Bmw OEM plastic rivets; 10 for $8 (totally not needed, the hitch comes with good plastic rivets). Take your time, watch the video a few times , use the right tools, and you won’t have an issue. I did not have cut the bumper at all. The fit is perfect and the bumper does not come in contact with the hitch at all. As well, the video is spot on. My only real tip is to go slowly. Be super careful with the bumper sensor connector. I accidentally broke one of the tabs. It absolutely had no impact on reconnecting it. Other than that, have an extra set of hands ready for the pulling and refitting of bumper. etrailer has put a lot of thought in to making the process as easy as possible. Best of luck - you can do this.

by:

Well hidden, clean-looking design, and appears to be excellent quality. Provides very good clearance above concrete curbs (if backing up vehicle into a parking spot) even though it sits low beneath bumper. The 4-pin wiring could've been better concealed by installer, but they suggested I can zip-tie to hitch to hide from view. Looking forward to testing it out on the road soon.

2010 BMW X5

Great Product, fast delivery, easy & clear instructions, besides good videos on web site.
Installation is easy and quick if done with air tools and in equipped garage or shop.
Definitely not a driveway work. No need to cut rear bumper trim (2010 BMW X5 Diesel) as mentioned in the instructions and videos.
Now I can tow my jet sky, boat, use my bike rack, etc...Awesome.

2011 Ford Edge

I chose the Drawtite hitch because it retains use of the rear emergency tow eyes. Have a few installation pointers that will make it easier for the next guy. I have a 2011 X5 with the Sport Package and back up sensors. The instructions I received were Revision D, 3-27-2017.

1. (Step 1) Disconnecting the back up sensor require dainty but strong fingers. Also, the car side connector is held captive on the vehicle but must be relocated as it will get pinched hard when the hitch is installed. You can strap it up when you are done. Also, the harness is attached to the impact bar. Easy to pull off and reinstall. The routing of the harness with the hitch installed causes a rub point. I put split loom on the hitch and the harness to prevent chaffing.

2. (Step 1a) To remove the pop rivets, I found a sharp utility knife works best to cut the heads off. Make sure the remnants are pushed through before the bumper is reinstalled. Both the top ones were stuck and it would have been easier if I had noticed with the bumper off. I had to hold the new rivet pin with a utility knife between the rivet and the gun to hold it while getting the second grip on it with the rivet gun which barely fit with the tire on. Otherwise the pin will just push back into the hole.

3. (Step 1a) In the illustration, it points to a lower rivet at the wheel opening and states: "Do Not remove Plastic pop rivets". On mine they were reusable push pins and they had to be removed to get the bumper cover off.

4. (Step 1b) To remove the wheel well molding, pull straight away from the vehicle.

5. (Step 1f) I used two flat screw drivers to pop the four retaining tabs under the tailgate. It's a lot easier if you align these as you put the bumper back on - not wait until the sides are buttoned up - experience talking here.

6. (Step 1g) At the tail lights, the tab release is on the bottom (photo #1707). There are three nuts (8mm socket) holding the tail lights on.

7. (Step 1h) To remove the forward portion of the bumper cover, pull the leading edge away and you'll see three locking tabs at the horizontal gap that if you hit them with a thin trim tool, they'll release easily. (photo #1705)

8. (Step 2) It is a good idea to remove the plastic trim piece above the impact bar. The impact bar will hang up on it when it comes out. It will also hang up when you reinstall and in my case, I cracked it when the impact bar caught it as I was bolting it all together. You can see the impact bar sit up into a hole of the piece in photo 1708. Apply lube to the studs before removing nuts. I had three that came off hard, one terribly so until I ran it back tight an added lube. The plastic decorative covers on the impact bar studs do not grip well or at all with the added hitch thickness. I cleaned the bolts off with brake clean and used RTV to hold in place

9. (Step 6) The drawing states to cut a 2" deep 8" wide clearance slot in the rear fascia for hitch clearance but I ended up with 2.5" and it was just right. At two inches the lower fascia pops out of the bumper cover.

Hope this helps!

2013 BMW X5

The product came as advertised and was installed by a professional Auto Body Repair shop. Not everyone will install this, including the dealership. The tutorial is easy to follow, but for my vehicle, 2013 BMW X5, it involved removing the entire back bumper, wheel well moldings, lights, reflectors, and bumper sensor. This was way beyond my pay grade. It's now installed, looks great, and cost $240 to install. All-in-all considering the price and free shipping from eTrailer, it's a great value and I couldn't be happier.

by:
2010 BMW X5

First, I want to thank you for your custom service support. It's nice to know that in an industry flooded with choices, you recognize the importance of customer support.

Now for my critique…
The hitch was installed as per the instructions however I have two suggestions.
1) The decorative crash bar nut covers (depicted in the attached photo) would not screw back on either because the lack of ample threads due to the hitch being installed and required RTV to reattach.
2) There is no place to secure the wire harness (w/o purchasing your extra bracket) however I was able to stuff the harness (folded on itself) in the square tubing on the back side of the hitch as depicted in the attached photo. Putting a trailer hitch on some vehicles should not require exposed bracketry and wire harnesses but rather an inconspicuous add-on to maintain the as much of the ascetics and beauty of that vehicle which separates a "quality kit" from those installed from the "shop down the road".

I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver but they are admittingly very similar. There are no options from EcoHitch unfortunately.

  • Will the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch # 75600 Fit a 2013 BMW X5
The Draw-Tite Max-Frame Class III Trailer hitch, # 75600, will fit on your 2013 BMW X5 as long as it is not the M model and the installation will be the same as the 2011 X5. The 2011 X5 is the same generation as the 2013 X5 so the vehicles are very similar. At this time we do not offer a trailer hitch for the M model. One thing to keep in mind when installing this hitch is that you will need to remove 6 plastic push rivets to remove the rear bumper fascia. We have found that the replacement...

  • Parts Needed to Add Trailer Hitch, Wiring Harness and Brake Controller to 2011 BMW X5
To tow with your 2011 BMW X5 you are correct that you will need a trailer hitch receiver, a 4-way flat, 7-way and brake controller. Let's start with the trailer hitch and for that the best option for your 2011 X5 is the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver # 75600. Next you will need a 4-way wiring harness, the Curt Powered Tail Light Converter with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # C59236. You will also need the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7, which will give...

  • Brake Controller Recommendation for 2015 BMW X5
The Draw-Tite Class III hitch part # 75600 for the 2015 BMW X5 is a great option as long as the X5 doesn't have the M performance add on. The Draw-Tite hitch provides about 13-1/2 inches from the top of the receiver tube to the ground for ground clearance. To figure out the proper amount of rise or drop needed in a ball mount to tow the trailer level, you will need to measure from the bottom of the coupler on your trailer to the ground. The difference between the 13-1/2" and your measurement...

  • Why Does my Draw-Tite Have two Hitch Pin Holes on my 2012 BMW X5
The pin hole you should be using is the larger one. The smaller hole is not used. I would not recommend you use the smaller hole even though it seems to offer a smooth ride for you. Since you have a Thule rack you should be able to just tighten up the threaded pin and that movement should go away.

  • Parts Needed to Install an Electric Brake Controller on a 2017 BMW X5
I can help you find what you need to get it installed but there isn't a direct plug-in wiring adapter for the Prodigy P2 # 90885 that's confirmed to fit your 2017 BMW X5. You can install a 4-way trailer connector on the back of your X5. Use # 119250KIT for this. It needs to be hardwired into the BMW's wiring. Then use our # ETBC7 kit to convert the 4-way to a 7-way. This kit also includes everything you need to install the P2. However, finding the wiring under the dash for the P2...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation with Least Amount of Modification on a 2013 BMW X5
From what you described you're either looking for the EcoHitch # EH44FR which doesn't require fascia trimming but it does replace the OEM impact structure behind the bumper, or the Draw-Tite # 75600 which is the only hitch that lets you reinstall the impact structure, but it does require fascia trimming. I personally like the EcoHitch option here better because you don't have to modify anything. With all of the hitches available for your 2013 BMW X5 the impact structure needs to be removed...

  • Will Powered Taillight Converter Harness Draw Power When Vehicle is Shut Off
Although the Curt trailer wiring harness which we sell as # C56190KIT is connected directly to the battery to provide a reliable secure power connection for the trailer taillights, it won't pull any power from the battery unless the taillights are actually on. If it would make you feel better, you could install a battery isolation solenoid like part # PK5231201 inline on the circuit ran to the battery so the feed shuts down when the ignition is off, but it's honestly not necessary. The...

  • How to Remove the Rear Bumper Fascia for Installing Draw-Tite # 75600 on a 2018 BMW X5
I am attaching a picture from the instructions for the Draw-Tite # 75600 for you to reference when removing the rear bumper fascia on your 2018 BMW X5. You will need to remove some pop rivets, fascia screws, reflectors, screws behind the reflectors, and some retaining clips to completely remove the rear bumper fascia. • Recommendation for a Hitch and Bike Rack to Fit a 2015 BMW X5
For a 2015 BMW X5, I recommend the Draw-Tite Class III Max Frame Receiver Hitch, # 75600. This Draw-Tite hitch is custom-fit for the X5 and has the 2 x 2 inch receiver opening. The hitch will install to existing mounting holes already on the car. No drilling will be necessary. I recommend the Thule Camber Bike Rack, # TH9058, on a 2015 BMW X5. The Thule rack allows you to carry two bikes with a total weight capacity of 70 lbs. The rack tilts away from the vehcle to allow you to access...
