Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Installation - 2018 Toyota Highlander

Speaker 1: Today in our 2018 Toyota Highlander, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Draw-Tite Class Three Custom Fit Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 76156. So here's what our hitch is going to look like. The main thing we're going to see is the receiver tube sticking out the back, and the cross tube may be visible if we get low enough, but it's going to be pretty well hidden right underneath the bumper here. Our receiver is going to stick out just a little bit past the back of our bumper, but we're not really gonna have to worry about bumping into it unless we're right up against the car when we're walking behind it.It's a class three hitch, which means it's going to give us that two inch by two inch receiver tube opening, and it has a nice reinforced collar just adding to the finished look of it, as well as giving it at its strength. Now since it is a class three, we're going to have a wide variety of accessories that we're going to be able to mount and we're going to mount 'em right here in this five ace hitch pinhole except a standard five ace pinning clip. Now these aren't included in the kit, but you can pick 'em up on our website using part number PC3.Now you'll notice there's a smaller secondary hole towards the back of the receiver tube and that's going to be exclusively for the J-Pin stabilization device which is going to be an anti-rattle device which is going to be nice if any of your accessories don't have one built in.

Now the safety chain connection points are going to be a loop style and they're going to be welded at the bottom of the receiver tube and as you can see, we're going to have plenty of room to get most sized hooks on or off. Now the other nice thing is that they're just slightly offset from the hitch pin hole, so we're not going to have to worry about any kind of interference from a locking device or the hitch pin itself and making it harder for us to get those hooks in place.A nice feature that this draw tight added to the hitch is just to the left of the receiver tube. We're going to have this bracket welded on. We're going to be able to mount any kind of electrical accessory so whenever we hook up to tow, our electrical will be right here. Now as far as weight capacity goes, our hitch is going to feature a 500 pound tongue weight along with a 5000 pound gross trailer weight rating.

Now I always recommend that you double check your Highlander's owner manual to make sure you don't exceed the manufacturer's recommended weight.I'd like to give you a few measurements that'll help you in deciding for accessories for your new hitch such as a ball mount, bike rack or even a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer most edge of the bumper, it's going to be right about one inch. From the ground to the inside top edge of the receiver tube opening, that's going to be right around 16 and 1/4 inches. So now that we've seen what our hitch looks like and gone over some of the features, let's show you how to get it installed. To begin our installation, I went ahead and lowered my spare tire.

Now it's not necessary, but it'll make it a lot easier for you to work underneath the vehicle, give yourself a little bit more head room and you'll be able to see a lot easier. On the driver's side here, we're going to have to remove this plastic appearance panel to the very back. We're going to have a few push pins as well as a few bolts that are holding it in place. To remove the bolts on the outside of the panel here, I'm going to be using a 10 mm socket. For the push pins, you'll notice there's kind of some small notches going around the edge. So you're going to want to grab a flat blade screwdriver and go right in that notch and I'm going to pop out the center section of the push pin first.

I'm just going to release the tension and then we can remove the rest of it. Now there's going to be two more plastic retaining nuts on the inside towards our spare tire. Now these are going to be 12 mm and these aren't going to fully come off but it should lower the panel while we loosen it. And then we can pull the panel out.Now we're also going to need to remove the passenger appearance panel that's underneath and we're going to have some more 10 mm bolts holding it in place. Now right behind the muffler if we look up by the frame rail, there is going to be one that's going to be kind of hidden so we don't want to forget that one. Then we're going to also have some plastic push pins that we're going to need to take out. So on the passenger's side, we're going to have this tow hook here and we're going to need to remove the bolts that are holding it in place. So you're going to want to grab a 17 mm socket and we can pull 'em out. Now right towards the front of our vehicle right by the muffler, we're also going to have this bracket and it's going to be in the frame rail and we're going to need to remove that bolt holding it in place. So again, we'll grab a 17 mm socket and we can pull it out. Now I do want to mention, we will be reinstalling this bracket and sandwiching it between the hitch. Now just towards the back, we're going to have our muffler hanger bracket that bolts into the side of the frame. We're going to need to remove these two bolts and hold onto 'em. So I'm going to grab a 12 mm socket and pull those out. So now the frame rail, we're going to have these plastic and rubber plugs. We're going to need to remove all of 'em. So these plastic ones that have the flat notch in it, I'm just going to take a flathead screwdriver and I'm actually going to unscrew the plug cause these are going to have factory weld nuts in them. So it'll be a lot easier just to unthread it and they'll come right out. For the rubber plugs, I'm just going to pop them out and it's just going to be a hole in the frame. And remove all the plugs on the passenger side as well.So before we put our hitch up, I want to go over the mounting locations. Our hitch is going to mount all the factory weld nuts of the threaded holes that are in the frame. And we're going to take our M12 bolts and again, a conical toothed washer. We're going to slide the washer over the bolt and we're going to make sure that it's facing up towards the hitch, and we're going to be able to thread it in just like that. Now it's always a good idea to take your bolt, make sure that you can thread it into the frame nice and easy and that there's not going to be any rust or corrosion inside the threads. Now since all of them are covered up and they have plugs in 'em, there shouldn't be anything in there. Now right above our muffler, right at the back of the fascia, we're going to have this plastic flap here. Now I already drew a line but we're going to need to trim this off so that our hitch will have room to go into place. Now you can use whatever you have available. It's a sharp utility knife, a pair of cutters, or I'm going to be using a rotary tool just to make a nice clean cut across. So you just want to take your time and be careful cause you don't want to cut into the fascia. You're just going to cut underneath on this flap to where you're not going to see it at anyways. Now with an extra set of hands, we're going to lift our hitch. You're going to want to go over the exhaust. We're going to line up the holes in our hitch with the weld nuts in the frame. We're going to take our hardware and loosely get it in place until the hitch can support itself and then we'll work on getting the rest of the hardware in. And you want to get at least one in on each side so the hitch won't fall down. Now before we put that forward bolt all the way at the back of our muffler here, we're going to have to put that bracket back in place. Now we're going to want to sandwich it between the hitch and the frame. We're going to come back with a 19 mm socket and I'm going to snug up all my hardware. Now this same 19 mm socket, I'm going to come back with my torque wrench. I'm going to torque all my hardware down to the specified amount in the instructions. You're going to want to repeat that for all the remaining hardware. So with out hitch torque down, we can put our passenger's side panel back in place. Now with out hitch in place, we're not going to be able to put our driver's side panel in place unless we are going to trim it. So we're going to go ahead and just leave ours off for now.Now all we have left to do is put our spare tire back up and we'll be ready to hit the road. And that'll finish up your look at the Draw-Tite Class Three Custom Fit Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 76156 on our 2018 Toyota Highlander.

Installed on a 2018 Lexus RX350L. A little complicated with some trimming of panels required. But nothing too bad. Had to remove the spare tire to get the hitch to line up with the bolt holes. Solid quality and build. This is probably my 6th or 7th hitch install from etrailer. Took me about an hour. Looks great on installed. 671303

One year later review. Could not be happier. Installed it by myself while following the etrailer installation video on my laptop. It fit perfectly on my 2018 Highlander. I have used it for towing ~25 times in the last year without any issues or concerns. No major rust or other unsightliness. This is the second hitch I have gotten from etrailer - the first hitch fit perfectly on my 2012 Highlander back in 2013. 99% sure my next SUV will have an etrailer hitch on it also when the times comes. 670450

etrailer is the best. Best Price on this hitch and package shipped and arrived as scheduled. Ordered for 2017 Toyota Highlander and fit perfectly. Trailer hitch was complete with all parts. Easy to follow directions and helpful installation videos. A friend and I installed it in less than an hour. Very pleased with the hidden hitch feature of this hitch. Looks great and works for my application of holding Kuat hitch mounted bike rack. I hesitated buying this hitch because I did not want it to protrude too far past the bumper. Not to worry. The offset of the hitch past the bumper is negligible--no more than 2" and that is with the rubber cover. No shins busted yet. Purchased rubber tube cover for the hitch also: Rubber Tube Cover for 2" Trailer Hitch Receivers - I-728. Fits well looks great. No logos on this cover--yea! Would look at etrailer first for any other auto accessory needs. 663413

Great hitch. Nice profile for a non-factory hitch.

I was impressed by the quick shipping. The hitch is very well made. I installed the hitch by myself in about an hour and a half. No issues with the hitch or the installation. I followed along with the instructional video. It's not a complicated install. I could have installed it without the video but it sure is easy to just go step by step along with the video. I used a floor jack and a couple of jack stands to lift the hitch in place. If I would have had another person helping, I could have avoided using the jack and jack stands. I did the install in my garage with hand tools. The only special tool that is required is a torque wrench. I'm glad that I did this myself. I called around to have a hitch installed and the cost for a shop to do a hitch install was crazy. This hitch requires 6 bolts to mount. Follow the video and it's easy. I really like that I got the hitch that is hidden under the vehicle. For a little more money, I don't have to see the cross bar of the hitch. This hitch also has the mounting plate to be able to mount the wiring plug. I bought the mounting plate for the wiring plug so it's not hanging and looking sloppy. FYI, you only need 1 piece, which is part # 18144. You don't need part #18140 if you buy this hitch. I also ordered the wiring harness and ran it through the floor under the trunk lid. I found a hole that was filled with a rubber plug. I cut a slit in the rubber plug and put the wire through it. I used electrical tape and zip ties to secure the wires. It looks professional and clean. I checked the lights and blinkers with a tester and everything works as it should. I haven't towed anything yet. I have full confidence in this hitch and the install. etrailer provides everything that you need. Excellent products, quick shipping, easy to follow install videos, customer service, excellent pricing. 659138

I selected this Trailer Hitch Receiver because it hides most of the frame behind the rear bumper which I believe to be a cleaner look. I'm very happy with the result. Speaking of installation it was easy to install using the video provided by etrailer. After installing the hitch, I have a couple of suggestions. No need to remove the plastic splash cover on the passenger side, only remove the bolt that holds the forward clip to the frame which is the forward bolt hole for the hitch. Also, the push pins for the rear bumper support do not need to be removed as the hitch installs under these supports. This is the first of many hitches I've installed on my own vehicles and the Toyota Highlander is the only one that has predrilled holes with nuts installed. This really made the DIY installation very easy. The most difficult part of the install for me was trimming the plastic splash guard on the driver’s side to fit over the installed hitch. The etrailer installation video simply left this part off and I guess that’s an option. 650373

Went on my 2019 Highlander XLE without a hitch! Took me about 1.5 hrs working in the driveway without the car raised up in any way. Used a couple of jack stands and 5 gal buckets to raise the hitch up close to where it needed to be. Held one side up and got a bolt in and then the other. No issues but you need a hefty torque wrench to put the specified torque rating on those nuts. Putting the driver side plastic cover back in took a fair amount of trimming but not difficult. Also used the CURT C56217 wiring kit, the plug mounting bracket 18144, 1/2" wire loom 459075-1 to cover the wires. The only issue with the CURT wiring kit is trying to stick the box to the back wall. The wires are too short to put it down in the rear quarter panel and because of the sealant strips theres no flat smooth place to stick it. 647082

This application is for a 2018 Toyota Highlander Limited. I went this route because the dealer was going to charge me $870 and felt the $150 plus my time was worth it. I watched the instructional video twice and then waited for the hitch. They hitch was here in four days, came in great shape in well padded box. I followed the instructions as I remembered and from start to finish it took me 35 minutes. I used an igloo cooler to elevate the opposite side and be my second set of hands since I had no one to help me. What a great product thank you for your help Derek Brown 499062

I picked this hitch because it was less visible than any of the others, even the factory hitch. Delivery came in 3 days, box was secure and the hitch fit perfectly. There was some missing paint on the hitch but a couple shots of black paint took care of that. Thank you for the very good video to install the hitch. It helped with the installation and panel cutting. Very pleased with the product and delivery. 509871

Fits good on my 2018 Toyota Highlander. Most of the installation instructions were good. Would suggest a little more instructions on how to trim the splash panels. I asked a question on line to etrailer and they responded with a picture and video as where to install the new fuse. Thank etrailer! 616655

I finally found the time to install my hitch. Watch the video and look for others too. The video is very helpful. I suggest taking a picture of the underbody before you pull off the nuts, screws and clips. There are a couple different kinds and it is easy to forget which one goes in which hole. Since I failed to do this, the video was helpful to get the pieces mounted back on. I've seen some comments here that the video does not show the details of where to cut. Not sure they updated the video, but it seemed detailed enough for me. My Dremel too with a cutoff wheel made it very easy to trim the underbody plastic. Overall, happy with the install and the look of the hitch. Almost all of the hitch is hidden under the rear bumper. Only way to get less to show is to by the Toyota Factory kit. That one hides even more as it replaces pieces on the actual plastic bumper on the Highlander. There is a $200-$250 cost premium to get that look. 553574

Every thing was great the video is good except it took me a long time to find the grommet to feed the wire thru to the hitch to put in the bracket that I bought to mount the 4 pin connector to the hitch, instead of rolling it up and putting it in the tool compartment like the video shows. I have the Hybrid so the battery made it harder to see. It is in the back driver side corner behind the battery. I was able to get my hand back there and feed it thru without taking the battery out. It would have been nice to have the info in the video or instructions as it took me a while to find it. I even called and your help desk did not know where it was. Cost me an extra hour or so. You can see it in the picture with the multi colored wires going thru it. Sorry I took the picture after I put the tool box back in. 476907

After receiving the package 20 days after ordering because ups lost the package it arrived with some chips in the powder coating. The hitch installed very easily and looked very nice. Just a little concerned about rust happening on the chipped parts I needed to use the hitch so did not try to get another hitch without chipped paint. Everyone at etrailer was very nice and helpful with the shipping issue. 474342

After much research I Ordered the 76156 Draw-Tite hitch for my new 2018 Highlander with the Curt wiring kit. Received all parts ordered complete, in less than 3 days . Quality of all items was First Class and etrailer price was hard to beat and I checked around. This was a Real great deal especially when you consider shipping was FREE. The Pictures and Video's on etrailer web site were so HELPFUL on making the buying decision and doing the install. It took me two days but I saved over $500 doing the job myself and it even turned out to be a better set up then the hitch the Toyota dealer was offering. See Draw-Tite Hitch Picture you can hardly tell the hitch is there. Amazing!!! Thank You ! etrailer Corp for helping to make this one of my better buying decisions and projects. . 2019 Toyota Highlander

Let’s get the 1 negative out of the way then focus on the many positives. On my new 2019 Highlander the 6 mounting holes didn’t exactly line up. Despite dry fitting all the bolts to make sure the threads were good, it took a good bit of wrestling to get the last 3 seated. I didn’t have to ream or grind the holes but it took some time and force to get them in and torqued. Get some ramps as it will help, you’ll be under there for a while (3 hours total project time for me). Now the many positives. Excellent website with OUTSTANDING video tutorials, great pricing and customer service. I got exactly what I wanted for a price significantly less than what Toyota or a local trailer shop wanted. This hitch fits discreetly under the bumper, you don’t see the horizontal bar, and there are no exposed logos or stickers. This is a Class III and not a IV but I have no intention of maxing the trailer rating of my car or needing to use load leveling spring kits. Wiring kit was simple to install and passed easily underneath through a factory predrilled hole and grommet. All I had to do was trim the rubber grommet and reseal with gorilla tape. No exposed wires or need to dangle out of the tailgate. A previous review showed exactly how to trim the driver side trim plate to go around the hitch. I would recommend as you take out each fastener, tape it to the part to know where to return it to. There are 3 different types of fasteners. My buy from etrailer was the Draw Tite 76156, 18144 plug mounting Bracket, Curt C56217 wiring kit, the ALL648544 Trim Pad Remover, and the Curt I26 Light Tester. From the discount hardware store I bought some ½” rachet extensions and the basic clicker ½” drive torque wrench for $20 each. All-in this was a $250 job and I am very pleased. Toyota wanted $1000.00. 596603

I wasn’t sure which hitch I should purchase for my 2017 Toyota Highlander XLE and reached out to the email provided. I was surprised at the quick turnaround on response time and I received the recommendation on the Drawtite 76156 (vs the 75896) because it didn’t show as much under the bumper. I ordered the hitch on a Monday and expected it to be delivered by Thursday morning. When it didn’t arrive as expected - I emailed customer service. They were VERY quick on their reply in letting me know that it should arrive by the next morning since it was stuck at the UPS facility. I was pleasantly surprised when they followed up with letting me know they received notification of delivery and wanted to be sure I had received it. The total installation took 2 people around an hour. We decided to replace the driver’s side panel after putting the hitch on and I wish the installer on the video would have shown us how to trim that panel. ** Since he didn’t show the cuts made, I would suggest that a TEMPLATE be included with the instructions to save time** Overall - I am VERY please with my trailer hitch - which I intend to use mainly for a bike rack and possibly tow a small trailer. I will definitely purchase from eTrailer again!! 491049

Quick delivery and installation!! I would recommend removing the spare tire. That saved a lot of time. I wish there was a pattern for cutting the splash guard included in the instructions. I'll be making the modification via other's pictures, but a cutout to lay over the guard would be nice. Took 45 minutes with the help of a neighbor. 518251

This hitch receiver is a high quality product that fit my 2015 Toyota Highlander perfectly. Because the hitch framing is hidden by the rear fascia it looks like a factory install. I followed the etrailer online installation video and had no problems even though I did it myself using a motorcycle jack as my helper! I also bought the curt wiring harness and again, using the online video, all went without a "hitch" (pun intended!). Great products, very helpful videos, and fast delivery. I will recommend this company to my "track-day" friends for their trailer needs! 433105

Rear hole slots were slightly less than 42 inches and after mounting could not get rear bolts installed. Option was to return, but dropped hitch and used a 20 ton jack to bend to 42.5 inches and reinstalled unit. For a 2018 Highlander the center of slots should be 42 inches for installation. Unit is sound and happy with look on car. Not happy to have installed twice. Also you do not have to cut items in figure 2 of instructions. Video was better than written instructions. Attached are pictures of aleignment before bending. One all the way to side and where the other lined up. A lot more reasonable priced than Toyota hitch. 572481

Received within 24 hours of ordering! Installed wiring harness after watching video and went super easy. Was able to run 4 flat through grommet and under vehicle with little struggle. I then secured module with provided tape and for extra rattle proofing secured over its debt the grommet with Gorilla tape. Hitch installed with some effort to due to heavy nature of the product, also had to do less trimming of fascia to install than shown on instruction sheet. Overall a install I am proud of! ( Will note I needed to use one of the bolts removed from tow hook to go through the first hole on passenger side to be long enough to go through hitch and small plate that secured plastic panel. ) 424559

I am extremely pleased with etrailer, especially their service. I initially ordered the wrong hitch (model 76156) since it didn't accommodate spring anti-sway bars, however, I was disappointed that the documentation didn't make this clear until I actually saw the hitch sticker. Chelsey (customer service) worked with me to get the proper hitch, and split the return shipping cost with me, which was very commendable. When the new hitch arrived, there was some cosmetic damage, and Chelsey offered a $10 credit for some spray touchup paint. Shipping and customer service response on both hitches was incredibly fast, and etrailer will be my first stop for any of my future hitch needs. Highly recommended. 467424

Product is rusting around the welds. The vehicle is garage keep and the hitch has been used 5 or 6 times. The fit is great the finish level of the product is the problem. 573246

Comments

The hitch is located on the underside of the vehicle which can unfortunately leave its finish vulnerable to abrasion from road debris being kicked up into it. Once the powder coat has been abraded, its pretty easy for the chemicals used on the roads in the winter to cause corrosion. Ive had a Draw-Tite hitch on my van for about 6 years, every fall I crawl under there and look for any corrosion. If I find any, I give the area a light sanding to remove the rust and then touch up the area with a rust-inhibiting spray paint. Rust-Oleum works very well.

The hitch I ordered for a 2019 highlander DOES NOT FIT! The hitch has to opened up about half inch. With a 3 foot pry bar and a lot of extra work it can be done. If the hitch fit this would all be unnecessary. The holes DO NOT LINE UP. I had read this on reviews and they are correct. David 610574

Comments

So that they can flex along with the vehicle, the hitches are purposely constructed so that the mounting flange side plates have some flexibility. This flexibility has the drawback of sometimes allowing the mounting flanges to be slightly bent out of position during shipping and handling. This is a fairly common occurrence, and we have a help article which Ill link to that shows a few different methods of moving the hitch back into proper position.

The only thing I found that I didn’t like was 8.8 grade instead of 10.9 grade bolts. Just a little piece of mind that probably doesn’t mean much overall, but I’d feel better about them since they’re only 10mm diameter. Other wise, looks like a good hitch. Time will tell. 602721

Hitch is what it is, but the service from etrailer was Excellent ... George informed of a delay in availability from maker, and worked to ensure it was sent as quickly as possible... I've ordered from etrailer previously and have been nothing but satisfied! 511521

I am thrilled with this product. I watched the video several times before trying it myself. The video was spot on. I did a one man installation without raising the vehicle to reduce the height I had to lift the hitch. I am 70, so anyone should be able to make this installation. I like this hitch does not hang down below the rear fascia. I took the time to trim the driver's side underbody panel to allow it to be reinstalled. This was the most time consuming part of the installation as it was a trial and error effort. I included photos of the trimmed panel so others can see basically what was involved. The end product was well worth the extra effort. 456222

I continue to be very happy with the hitch. I use it about once a month to haul to the local landfill No issues whatsoever.

Awesome service, speed, quality and follow through. Highly recommend. Very satisfied. Very helpful install tips from trailer and other owner/installers (Thanks!!) : what/how to cut plastic shroud on driver’s side. balancing hitch on 2 (I used 3 gallon buckets, but 5 gallon might also work w/o jacking the vehicle higher) Loosely hang driver’s side, then temporarily fasten passenger side w longer bolts from tow hook (which is removed) to seat hitch until e hitch bolts can be installed more easily. My tip: I learned torqueing to recommended torque is a force that is everything most guys might have while laying on your back with a longer breaker bar type socket wrench. Be sure to get the bolts torqued per instructions. 509319

The Draw tite hidden hitch item 76156 fairly easy to install by myself installed on 2019 Toyota Highlander. Oh and shipped to me fast. I was surprised how quick I received the hitch Thanks Etrailer!! Oh. And I seen on another review about using buckets to hold the hitch up, it was sketchy for me but it worked!! Thanks for that too. 696280

2019 Toyota Highlander

My background: Professional engineer, been wrenching on cars and airplanes for 15 years, tow approximately 5000 miles a year. This is my 3rd hitch install from etrailer.com. The previous two went relatively smoothly, well, save for needing to drill holes in the jeep frame to route blind nuts, but that isn't any fault of etrailer's hitch. This go around was quite different however. The installation is listed as a 45min job by a professional, it took me 4 hrs. The professional instructions cut time by throwing away factory underbody panels from Toyota, which I won't do. That step would save approximately 1hr, but that is still a far cry from 45min! The installation looked relatively straightforward, 6 bolts into the Highlander frame and a few cuts in some plastic. Wrong. First up, the hitch was slightly bent, so getting all 3 bolts in the drivers side frame rail was tough and required starting them in the 'magic' sequence. Second up, there is a factory bracket in one of the holes on the passengers side that holds a piece of trim plastic to the undercarriage. This bracket is made out to be flat in the Draw-Tite instructions. It is far from it, with 1/8" flanges on either side of the flat plate. The included fasteners are not long enough to cope with this standoff distance, which you only figure out while under the car wrestling a 50lb hitch over your head. I removed the factory bracket and cut the flanges off then painted the bracket and re-installed. That added a good 30min to the job. Finally, upon installation I noticed several large areas of missing paint/plasti-dip. This would be acceptable had they been in areas I knew contacted the ground or the shipping container, but several were in locations that were clearly bare when the hitch was shipped. So another 30min of painting later to prevent the hitch from rusting down the road, and an hour of cut-measure-cut later on the drivers side under panel and the hitch was installled. Final look is clean and the hitch is robust enough to do what I need, which is the only reason I'm giving this three stars and not 1. For anyone contemplating a hitch on their new or nearly new Toyota Highlander, get the OEM hitch and mount it yourself, you'll save a lot of time. 694107

Quality wise this product gets a 5 star review. The 4 stars are due to the lack of protective packaging which I had to fix by painting the hitch on numerous areas prior to installation. This hitch rocks. Such a clean fit. I considered the factory hitch but I am happy I didn’t spend $450. The receiver is so clean that you can’t even see the brand stickers from any level. Great product, great pricing, and it arrived when you promised. You may need to touch up the paint. Would definitely purchase again. 693312

I installed this hitch with help from a friend. It goes much easier with 2 people but can be done without getting professionals involved. The videos are real good. After a year, this hitch has worked flawlessly. I am very happy with the hitch and wiring and recommend this to anyone looking for a hitch like this. One of the best features is the hitch is mostly hidden under the bumper, with just the receiver visible. Makes for a nice clean look. I tow a 6x12 enclosed trailer that I put my Honda Gold Wing inside. Total weight is about 2,400 lbs. 691567

Great hitch!! Relatively easy to install and at a great savings over what you would pay at the dealership. I just pull a utility trailer and don't need electric brakes. I bought the electrical kit that allowed me to connect to the factory wiring with no cutting/splicing. I saw a Youtube video in which a fellow used a floor jack with the hitch connected with Vicegrip pliers and used that example to install by myself. Completely satisfied with the Draw-Tite hitch and etrailer.com 691633

I purchased this a year ago for our new 2018 Toyota Highlander to use with our Thule bike rack. I preferred this design because of the minimal visibility of the hitch. I like how it is tucked up under the bumper. Installation was straightforward with the video. I used the other reviews and pics to trim the plastic panel which took a few tries to ensure that I did not trim too much. That was the trickiest part, but not difficult. I would recommend having an extra person for holding the hitch in place to start the first bolts. I tried it alone at first, but quickly decided to get 5 minutes of help instead of the “balancing act” I was attempting with buckets and blocks of wood. I would definitely recommend this hitch. One side note to etrailer, the packaging was ok, but could have used a little extra padding to keep the hitch from sliding around the box in transit. The powder coating was scratched off in a few areas. I touched it up with black paint. We just bought a boat, and this works perfectly for towing that as well. 677904

Overall pleased with the hitch and the install video was helpful. I can see why they left off the drivers side plastic cover as it took a bit of cutting to get it to fit around the hitch. There is a bracket for the passenger side cover they show removing and reinstalling but I couldn’t get it to fit under the hitch plate as it was too thick due to some ribbing. Since it is only used to hold a part of the cover, you could elect to leave it off as there are several other screws holding the cover in place. I elected to hammer it flat so it would slide under the hitch plate. I don’t know how they got it to fit in the video unless they had longer bolts. 658857

Came with shipping damage paint removed on a couple of surfaces. So now rust will get under the paint and after a year or so I will have a very rust hitch. You can see that there was no blast profile created for the paint to adhere to. Proper packaging could have prevented this. 653957

Great recommendation from E-Trailer for a hitch that is more hidden than most. Also great resources on E-Trailer website as the manufacturer directions are minimal. Like others have noted, take a minute to double check the hole spacing and follow E-Trailer directions to adjust. Will save you time and frustration while under the SUV. 652768

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Compare Trailer Hitches for a 2018 Toyota Highlander
  • There are a number of trailer hitch receivers that fit your 2018 Toyota Highlander and it can be confusing because they have a lot in common; however there are differences as well. Two of them, the Curt # C13200 and the etrailer.com # E98844, are virtually identical. A third, the Draw-Tite # 75896 is also the same basic design and installation. The biggest difference between these is the Curt and etrailer hitches have the hitch pin hole positioned about 1-3/4 inches further under the...

  • Comparison of Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receivers that Fit a 2017 Toyota Highlander XLE FWD
  • The biggest difference is how much of the hitch can be seen once it's installed on your 2017 Toyota Highlander. With the # 75896 you can see the entire crosstube under the Highlander's bumper. However, the # 76156 hides the crosstube behind the bumper so all you see is the receiver tube opening and safety chain loops. The latter is becoming more and more popular for cosmetic reasons. It's also the one I recommend for the same reason. The Curt # C13200 also leaves the crosstube exposed...

  • How to Determine Correct Trailer Wiring Harness for 2019 Toyota Highlander
  • Take a look at the rear of your 2019 Toyota Highlander in the spare tire compartment. You should be able to find a white connector like you see on the right hand side of the picture I've attached. If there is nothing plugged into that connector then you don't have the tow package. If there is something plugged into it, it should be a wiring harness with a converter (like is shown) which means you do have the tow package. If you do have the tow package I recommend the Hopkins harness,...

  • How to Determine if a 2018 Toyota Highlander has a Tow Package
  • To send me your picture you can just reply to me here. To me that connector you found sounds like where you need to plug a converter in which would mean you don't have the tow package. Look at the picture I've attached. If it looks like this will plug into the connector you found then that's what it is. It shouldn't be a connector for a brake controller because your 2018 Toyota Highlander doesn't have a custom adapter to install a controller. If this is what you need then I recommend...

  • Adding an Aftermarket Tow Package to a 2018 Toyota Highlander
  • From my research the factory tow package available on the 2018 Toyota Highlander includes a trailer hitch receiver and 4-way trailer connector to power a trailer's lights. The trailer hitch I recommend is the Draw-Tite, part # 76156. I like that the hitch's cross tube is hidden behind the rear bumper and out of site. The only downside to this hitch is that it isn't rated for weight distribution. If you're going to be using a weight distribution system to tow a trailer then I recommend...

  • The Draw-Tite Class III Trailer Hitch # 76156 and the EcoHitch # 306-X7250 for your 2016 Toyota Highlander are fairly similar hitches in that they both feature a hidden design where only the receiver will be visible beneath the bumper (instead of also having a fully exposed crosstube like on the other available hitches).
