Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Installation - 2019 Ram ProMaster 2500

Today on our 2019 Ram ProMaster 2500 we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Draw-Tite Class 3 Custom Fit Trailer Hitch Receiver. So here is what our hitch is going to look like once we have it installed. The cross tube's going to be hidden behind the bumper and all we're going to see is the receiver tube sticking out. Now, our receiver tube is going to stick out just a little bit past the bumper but not so much that we're going to have to really worry about it unless we're right up against the bumper walking by.Now this is a class three hitch which means it's going to give us a two inch by two inch receiver tube opening and they have a lot of different variety of accessories that are going to be available. The way we're going to mount any of those accessories is through the hitch pin hole here on the side. Our hitch is going to accept a standard 5/8th's pin and clip. Now these aren't included, but you can pick them up here at eTrailer.com.Now the smaller hole is towards the opening on the receiver tube, that's going to be exclusively for the J-Pin Stabilization Device. Now the way this is going to work, the long threaded section will go into our hitch pin area and then this hook is going to come into that secondary hole and it's going to apply pressure to our accessory. We'll tighten it up using the included nut and it will keep all that rattle and play and noise out of our accessory when we're driving down the road.

It's also a locking device so it's going to keep our accessories secure and, again, it's sold separately and can be found here at eTrailer.com.Now if you do plan on doing some towing, we're going to have rather large safety chain loops here. You can see where I have plenty of room to get those hooks on or off and since they're set back in a vertical position, we're not going to really have to worry about any kind of interference with our hitch pin or any kind of locking devices. As far as weight capacity goes, our hitch is going to have a 500 pound tongue weight rating, which is the maximum downward force to the receiver tube along with a 5,000 pound gross trailer weight rating. That's the amount it can pull, including the trailer and everything we have loaded on it. Now, with those numbers in mind, you should always double check your vehicle's owners manual because you never want to exceed the manufacturers recommended weight.Like to give you a few measurements and that's going to help you whenever you;'re looking for accessories for your new hitch, like the full mount, a bike rack, of even a cargo carrier. From the ground to the inside top edge of the receiver tube opening it's right about 19 inches. That measurements going to help out whenever you're looking for a ball mount so you can find the appropriate riser and drop to match up to your trailer. From the hitch pin hole to the outer most edge of the bumper is going to be right about an inch and a quarter.

However, the receiver tube is going to stick out past our bumper right about an inch and half. Now that we've seen what our hitch looks like and gone over some of the features, let's show you how to get it installed. To begin our installation, we want to open up our rear doors so we can get access to the rear bumper cover here. We're going to have a total of four screws that are holding it in place, the one on the very end, couple towards the center, and another one on the other end. Grab a T30 torque bit and we're going to pull those four screws out. Then if we move to the bottom of our bumper cover, we're going to have four more. We'll have one on the end, as well as one a little bit towards the center on each side.

Use that same T30 torque bit, pull all four of those out. Now, our van doesn't have any kind of back up sensors or anything on it, but if yours does, you want to make sure you disconnect it. It'll be right here at the bottom of the bumper cover on the passenger side. With all the fasteners removed, we're going to pull our bumper cover away and we'll set it aside for right now.Behind that, we're going to have our bumper structure and one each side, we're going to have two bolts on top here that we're going to have to remove. Now, since the bumper structure itself is kind of in the way, it'll help to use a short extension and a swivel, I'm going to be using a 16 millimeter socket and we're going to pull those bolts out. Now, on the backside of our bumper structure, we're going to have a nut that's holding it to the frame on the bottom. Grab a 15 millimeter socket and we can pull that nut out.Now once you remove the other nut on the other side, you want to be careful and kind of hold that bumper structure in until you can safely support it and pull it out. Then we'll just grab our bumper structure and we're going to pull it away. We're going to set this down because we're actually going to be attaching the hitch to this structure itself. On the end of the hitch here, we're going to have several different holes.

We want to make sure that his bottom hole lines up with the stud on our bumper structure. So we'll lift it up and we'll slide each end into the corresponding hole to makes sure that it's sitting nice and flat against it.On the back of our hitch here we're going to have a oblong hole as well as on the back of our bumper structure. We're going to get our hardware in there so we can bolt the hitch to the bumper structure so we're going to take our fish wire that comes in our kit and go through our hitch, we'll go into the bumper structure and we'll move to the front side and we're going to push our fish wire through until we can get access to this large hole in the front and we're going to take one of our spacer blocks, we'll slide it over the bolt leader, pushing it into the frame, and grab one of the carriage bolts from our kit. We're going to thread it on to the end of the wire. We're going to grab our pull wire and we're going to start pulling on it until we can get our bolt to come through, going through the hitch, and the bumper structure. Once you have your bolt through, you're going to want to remove the pull wire and you can not let the bumper being, kind of rest on there to hold the bolt in place, you put a conical tube washer facing the hitch and then we'll secure it down with a hex nut. We're going to repeat that process for the other hole on the other side.I'm going to come back with a 19 millimeter ratcheting wrench, you can also use a 3/4 inch wrench, and I'm going to tighten up the nuts here so that it sucks it in and are nice and snug against the bumper structure. You want to make sure you come back with a torque wrench and we torque these bolts down because once we put it in place, they're going to be kind of hard to get to.Now, because of the limited space here, I'm going to be using a crow's foot to torque down the bolts. We'll find that specification in our instructions. You want to make sure you torque both of them down and we get ready to put it up.Before we put our structure and hitch in place, we're going to be replacing the factory bolts here with some new ones. They're a little bit longer, and we're also going to be using a lock washer to go in place so we'll lift our hitch and assembly up, go through and we'll secure it using the new bolts. Now it's a good idea to get an extra set of hands because the hitch added on to the bumper structure can be a little heavy. You just want to make sure you get a couple threads on a bolt on each side so it'll support itself and we can work on getting the rest of the hardware in place. We're going to come back with a 17 millimeter socket and I'm going to be using a swivel just so it'll make it a little bit easier to get on the bolt head and I'm going to tighten them up.Then we're going to take the factory nut and we'll reinstall it back on the stud on the bottom back side of the bumper structure. We'll do that for both sides and we'll come back and we'll snug those up as well. We're going to come back and we're going to torque all of our hardware down to the specified amount in the instructions. Then we can take our bumper cover, we'll line it back up, slide it into position and we can secure it with all the hardware. And with all of our hardware in place, that'll finish up our installation and we're ready to hit the road. That'll finish up your look at the Draw-Tite Class Three Custom Fit Trailer Hitch Receiver on our 2019 Ram ProMaster 2500.

It looks like an excellent hitch. The welds and the finish look great. I have not installed it yet but I watched the video , and installation looks straightforward. I'm sure the fishing wires will work great. In theory, all the hitches are rated for the same weight. I am going to install a bike rack so, I chose this one for the simple install and to not have to pay for the manufactured shapes to avoid covering up the spare tire. I did not buy the wiring harness because I have no plans to tow in the near term. You all are about half the price of Dodge for the same product. It arrived in good shape, although the box was 3 times too big. If shipping is by the cube, you paid more. 611813

2016 Ram ProMaster 2500

Great product, easy install, only complaint is the bolts to fish through the vehicle bumper structure on my 2016 promaster were a 1/4" long. I simply bought 1 1/2" grade 5 carriage bolts to replace the ones sent and 5 minutes later it was done. It takes 15 to 20 minutes to install. 474812

Ram ProMaster 2500

The trailer hitch for a Promaster cargo van and the wiring harness I ordered with it are exactly as I expected, nice. But the shipping, specifically the packaging was a problem. I found a very large box at my door that was split wide open, probably form the hitch smashing through from the inside. There was one small piece of cardboard stapled to the inside that was intended to keep the heavy steel hitch locked in it's corner, it failed. Luckily the UPS people were able to keep the unmarked wire harness box together with the hitch. The fasteners for the hitch were taped into the receiver so they stayed in place. This proves that one size box doesn't fit all. Hope you are listening etrailer? 336597

Ask the Experts about this Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Will Curt Trailer Hitch # C13207 Fit a 2017 Ram ProMaster 2500 with Rear Step
  • The restrictions for the hitches that fit the 2017 Ram ProMaster 2500 only pertain to if it is an EXT model or not. Curt trailer hitch # C13207 does not fit the EXT models. If the step you have installed is the step bumper then there should not be a problem. If it is a side step then you will want to look over the linked instructions for the hitch to see where on the vehicle it installs and if that conflicts with where the step installs. If you do have an EXT model then the comparable...

  • The Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 75882 is a fit for a 2018 Ram ProMaster 2500 unless it has an extended body and from my research it looks like your 2018 Roadtrek Simplicity may have that extended body so instead I recommend the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 76050 instead as this is a confirmed fit for all models of '18 ProMaster 2500. This is a Class III hitch with a 2" receiver, 5,000 lb towing capacity and 500 lb tongue weight capacity. It is a bolt-on installation that will not require...

  • Hitch Recommendation for Promaster 3500 Extended
  • For your 2015 Ram ProMaster 3500 the Draw Tite # 76050 is a confirmed fit and would work great. It has more than enough capacity and the shortest install time listed of the hitches that fit your vehicle. You will need to start with a 4-way (if you do not have one). For that you would want the # 118618. Now if your trailer does not have brakes all you would need is the part # 37185 as an adapter to convert the 4-way to a 7-way. If you do have trailer brakes you would need the...

  • How to Carry Bikes on a 2017 Ram ProMaster
  • I do have an option for you but they do not make a bike rack that attaches to the rear swinging doors on your 2017 Ram ProMaster to my knowledge. The only logical way to carry bikes on this vehicle would be with a trailer hitch and hitch mounted bike rack. For a trailer hitch, I recommend the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 76050 which is a custom fit that installs using pre drilled holes in the frame rails. This option is cost effective and is fairly easy to install...

  • Recommended Parts for Towing Trailer with Electric Brakes Behind 2018 Ram ProMaster 1500
  • We have everything you need to set your Ram ProMaster 1500 up for towing! Starting with the trailer hitch I highly recommend the Draw-Tite Max-Frame # 76050, which in addition to being economically priced, features a sleek hidden cross-tube design for an unassuming OEM appearance on the van and more than enough capacity to safely pull your trailer. I have attached an installation video that you can use for reference. Moving on to wiring you will need to start with a 4-Way connector....
