Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2018 Ford F-150 - Draw-Tite

Speaker 1: Today on our 2018 Ford F-150 we're going to take a look at and show you how to install the Draw-Tite Max-Frame custom fit Class 3 trailer hitch receiver. Offering the 2" by 2" receiver tube opening, its part number is 75938.Now here's what our hitch is going to look like installed. As you can see, it's going to be flush or just inside the outer edge of the bumper there, so we're not going to have to worry about running into it or anything. Got our rounded crosstube. Comes over to the sideplates that are going to go up to the bottom of the leaf spring shackle on both sides and behind the bumper, so really quite easy to install. Just a few bolts to take out, a couple to put in, and you should have it locked on there. Now this is a Class 3 hitch, so it has the 2" by 2" receiver tube opening.

Makes it a really versatile hitch. Of course it's going to work out really well for your towing needs. The 2" by 2" ball mounts are very common. You can get one in just about any type of rise or drop that you might need to meet your situation. They also work out really well for your bike racks, cargo carriers, and really just about any other hitch accessory that's on the market is probably going to come in a Class 3 variety. To hold those in place you'll notice we do have two holes on the side of the receiver tube opening.

We always want to use the one closest to the front of the vehicle. That's 5/8" in diameter. You want to choose a Class 3-rated accessory, but there's going to be plenty of room there for whatever type you might want. Whether you want to do a pin and clip, locking hitch pin, or anti-rattle device, they should all work out fine. That second smaller hole that's closer to the rear of the truck is only going to be used for the j-pin stabilization system. Just a type of anti-rattle bolt that comes in there and holds everything nice and solid there on the back. Now we have plate-style safety chain connection points.

If you're doing a smaller utility trailer with the S-hooks, they're going to fit on there okay. Larger clevis hooks if you got a larger trailer, you can see those are also going to work out just fine. Really whatever size chain you might have, shouldn't have a problem getting them connected. Now as far as weight ratings on the hitch go, it offers a 900 pound tongue weight rating. That's the maximum downward force we can put at our receiver tube opening. It gives us a 6,000 pound gross trailer weight rating.

That would be the total weight of your trailer and anything you might load up on it. It is rated for use with weight distribution. If you use weight distribution, the tongue weight rating goes down to 800 pounds and that gross trailer weight rating is going to go up to 8,000. You just want to check the owner's manual on the F-150 to see what its particular tow rating is and really not go over that. Now a few measurements you're going to find helpful in selecting your ball mount, bike rack, or hitch cargo carrier will be from the ground to the inside top edge of our receiver tube opening we've got about 19-1/2". Then from the center of our hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of our bumper it's about 2-3/4".Now to begin the installation you may want to loosen or remove your spare tire. That's going to be up to you, but it can provide better access to some of the hardware and getting it in place. We're going to have on each side of the vehicle three attachment points and they're going to be exactly the same. The lower attachment point is going to be right down through the center of this large hole. You're going to use a carriage bolt and a spacer block, and that's going to sit right on top. They do provide pull wires for you to help you get this in position. As you can see, it's fairly open. Usually you can do it just by hand. We want to position it so our block rests on top and our bolt comes down through. We're going to do that on both sides. Now the two other attachment points we're going to have on each side are going to be right on the backside of the bumper. They're going to be the bolts that the flange nuts are on that hold the bumper in place. Again, we're going to have two of these on each side of the vehicle. Before loosening these, our hitch sits in behind them, we really need to support our bumper. I'm going to do a cam buckle strap here on my bracket and then we'll run this forward and connect it on the frame. Now what we want the straps do, to pull inward on the bumper while we take those nuts off. That will allow us to put our hitch in place and put our nuts back on. We're also going to support it from underneath with a jack stand to keep it from rolling down and away from the truck. Now for the two nuts you're going to need a 21 millimeter socket. We'll begin to loosen them up. Once we have them removed, we're going to hang on to them. We're going to be reusing them from our hitch. Now we'll head to the passenger side and do the same thing there. Now we need to pull our jack stand down so we have room for our hitch to come through. As you do that, you definitely want to make sure you have plenty of support and just watch that bumper and make sure it's not rolling out or coming off the truck. Then we can get our hitch put up in position and our nuts reattached. When we get our nuts started, it should hold our hitch in position. We'll guide our carriage bolts down through the holes in the side plates there like that. We'll just pull that up and get our hardware then we're ready. Now on each carriage bolt we're going to place on a conical tooth washer. You'll see the teeth needs to face up towards our hitch. Then we'll also thread on one of the provided hex nuts. We'll do that over on the passenger side as well. Now we'll start getting our hardware snugged down. I'm going to start with the carriage bolts. Now we'll go through and torque all of our hardware down to the specifications listed in our instructions. With everything torqued down, we can get our straps pulled off of our bumper there and our hitch will be ready for use. Be a good idea to get your spare tire put back in if you removed it. With our spare tire back in place, that's going to complete our installation of the Draw-Tite Max-Frame custom fit Class 3 trailer hitch receiver, part number 75938, on our 2018 Ford F-150.

Installation took approximately 45 Minutes on my 2016 Ford F-150. It Helps to have an extra set of hands. Using ratchet style straps (cam straps) like the video instructed is a necessity on this truck, because you are disconnecting the entire bumper which is only 4 bolts. The springs that are included work excellent to feed the 2 bolts which mount vertically. One tip is to make sure you lift and feed the hitch onto all 4 bolts which are horizontal to the inside of the bumper at the exact same time because it is a tight fit, in other words if you try to lift one side on to the 2 bolts first and then the other it will not guide on correctly, it must be lifted and guided on at the exact same time. A final tip, is to take a level and put it on the bumper before tightening the inner bumper bolts, mine slid out of level when I loosened the 4 bolts despite having the Cam-Nylon straps securely fastened in place. This is definitely worth installing yourself and saving the cost of having to bring your truck to a shop, but I will say try to line up a friend or family member to help with holding it in place, it will make your life easier on this installation. Why not save the money and buy it from etrailer. 345166

Everything fit perfectly only took 4 Hrs to install hitch, new brake controller and 4 pole to 7 pole adapter plug!!! Only complaint is the wire provided for the 12 volt power and trailer brake wire was about 20’ to short to do the entire setup!!! 728576

30 minutes and hitch was on. On a previous truck paid U-Haul 200 to install. 30 minutes and 140 was all it took for this one. Left spare tire in place. Did not strap bumper. Used floor jack and piece of wood to put tension on bumper and it stayed in place. Quick and simple. Towed a 14 foot trailer with wood working tools already and no problems. Great product. 489841

Product installed fine, any DIY'er should be able to do this. It tows fines and I haven't had any performance issues. Cosmetically it has started to rust at the opening of the receiver. Not like I used it hard, I think 5 times all year. I would think it wouldn't rust this fast. 487036

Michael, Thank you for your review. Hitches that are exposed to salt on the roads during winter time or a lot of rain can become rusty. Most of the time the rust starts if there is a scratch in the powder coating. The best thing you can do it spray the hitch off with fresh water if its exposed to salt, and sand away the rust. Then add some anti-corrosive spray paint. I hope this helps.

I ordered this part at 7:43 am on a Tuesday. At 12:55 pm Thursday it was at my door. At 2:10 pm Thursday it was on my truck and ready to go. I live in NC and it shipped from MO and was the best price all around with free shipping. The video said it took 30 minutes and 2 people. I did it by myself in about 25 after watching the video. That was about the best part, seeing someone else do it first. I'll certainly buy from etrailer.com again. 473904

Perfectly fit my 2016 F150. I followed the directions in the video, but found the straps to the bumper to be a bit different. Yes the bumper would fall off and rip the wiring harness without them. I left the passenger side strap tight and had to leave the driver side loose enough to move the bumper without letting it fall off. I could not get the hitch on with the bumper bolts in place on both sides. I slipped the passenger side on and one bolt to hold it on. Then pushed out the bumper bolts on the drivers side and slide the hitch into place and put the bumper bolts back through. Once I figured that out installation was a breeze, but I couldn't get it on before that. 350164

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Wiring Harness for 2016 Ford F-150 Without Tow Package
  • To help you determine which wiring harness will work on your 2016 Ford F-150 you can look for the connector that's under the truck's bumper. If the connector is round and looks like it will match up with picture # 1 that I've attached then you can use # 74682 and plug it right in to give you both a 7-way and 4-way trailer connector. If you find a connector that is more rectangular like in picture # 2 then you can use # C56110 which will give you a 4-way connector. If this is the...

  • What is the 2017 Ford F-150 Tow Capacity Rating
  • From my research regardless of how your truck is equipped you should have no problem meeting the 5,000 pound minimum because the lowest rated F-150 from 2017 has a towing capacity of 7,600 pounds. The exact capacity of your F-150 depnds on some other factors like the engine size and whether your truck is 2-wheel or 4-wheel drive.
