Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2018 Toyota Highlander - Draw-Tite

Speaker 1: Today in our 2018 Toyota Highlander, we're going to be taking a look at, and showing you how to install the Draw-Tite custom-fit trailer hitch receiver. Part number 75896. Here's what our hitch is going to look like. It is going to sit right below our bumper, and the cross tube is going to be visible spanning from side to side. Our receiver hitch is going to stick out past our bumper, which is going to be nice because we're going to have a lot of different options. When it comes to any type of accessory, we're not going to have to worry about it in contact with our bumper as much. Now, you do want to be careful when you're walking by, it's not sticking out to where you really have to watch, unless you're extremely close to the vehicle, but you want to watch your leg whenever you're walking behind it.

it's going to get a set 2 inch by 2 inch receiver tube opening, and have a wide variety of accessories available for it. It's also going to have a reinforced collar, not only giving it that finished look, but also a little bit of added strength. The way we're going to mount any of our accessories is through the hitch pin hole here, which is going to be towards the front of the vehicle. And it's going to accept a standard 5 ace pin and clip. These aren't included, but you can pick them up on our website, using part number PC3.The secondary hole towards the back of the receiver tube, that's going to be exclusively used for the J pin stabilization device, and that's going to be nice because it's going to apply pressure to the accessory inside the receiver tube here. And it's going to keep it from rattling when we're driving down the road.

It's going to be nice for any of those accessories you have that don't have a built in anti-rattle.As far as the safety chain connection points, there's going to be a plate style welded to the bottom and they're going to have rather large hooves, almost able to get my whole hand through it. We're not going to have too much trouble getting most sized hooks on or off. You just want to keep in mind, they are pretty inline with your hitch pin hole, so you just want to make sure they're not going to interfere with any kind of locking device, or the hitch pin itself. As far as weight capacity goes, our hitch is going to feature a 6,000 pound gross trailer rating, along with a 900 pound tongue weight rating. It is designed to work with weight distribution systems, which is going to bump your gross trailer rate rating up to 8,000 pounds and the tongue weight is going to stay at 900. With all that in mind, I always recommend you double check your Highlanders owners manual to make sure you don't ever exceed the manufacturers recommended weight.

One feature the Draw-Tite does is they put this electrical bracket, mounted right to the receiver tube, so if we have any kind of trailer wiring that we want to mount, it'll be right next to our receiver tube, ready to hook up when we're getting ready to tow.I'd like to give you a few measurements, and that's going to help you in deciding for accessories for your new hitch. This is a ball mount, bike rack, or even a cargo carrier. The center of the hitch pin hole is going to extend past the outer edge of the bumper, about a quarter of an inch. From the ground to the inside top edge of the receiver tube opening, that's going to be right about 16 and one quarter inches. Now that we've seen what our hitch looks like, gone over some of the features, let's show you how to get it installed. To begin our installation, I went ahead and lowered my spare tire.

It's not necessary, but it will make it a lot easier for you to work underneath the vehicle, give yourself a little bit more head room, and you'll be able to see a lot easier. On the drivers side here, we're going to have to remove this plastic appearance panel to the very back. We're going to have a few push pins, as well as a few bolts that are holding it in place. To remove the bolts on the outside of the panel here, I'm going to be using a 10 millimeter socket. For the push pins, you'll notice there's some small notches going around the edge, you're going to want to grab a flat blade screwdriver, and go right in that notch and it'll pop out the center section of the push pin first. You're just going to release the tension, and then we can remove the rest of it.There is going to be two more plastic retaining nuts on the inside, towards our spare tire. These are going to be 12 millimeter, and these aren't going to fully come off, but it should lower the panel while we loosen it. Then we can pull the panel out. We're also going to be giving room passenger appearance panel that's underneath. We're going to have some more 10 millimeter bolts holding it in place. Right behind the muffler, if we look up by the frame rail, there is going to be one that's going to be hidden, so we don't want to forget that one. And then we're also going to have some plastic push pins that we're gonna need to take out.On the passenger side we're gonna have this tow hook here, and we're going to need to remove the bolts that are holding it in place. You're going to want to grab a 17 millimeter socket, and we can pull them out. Now right towards the front of our vehicle, right by the muffler, we're also going to have this bracket, that's going to be in the frame rail. We're going to need to remove that bolt holding it in place. Again, we'll grab a 17 millimeter socket, and we can pull it out. I do want to mention, we will be reinstalling this bracket and sandwiching it in between the hitch. Now just towards the back, we're going to have our muffler hanger bracket that bolts into the side of the frame. We're going to need to remove these two bolts and hold onto them. Grab a 12 millimeter socket and pull those out. So now we're going to take our adapter plate that's in our kit, we're going to line it up with the holes that are in our frame and we're going to bolt it to the frame using those existing factory bolts that we just removed. We're going to line up the muffler bracket with the holes that are left in the adapter plate we just put on. We're going to take the bolts that are included in the kit, and we're going to pass through the hanger and into the bracket. We'll have one for each side of the muffler bracket. Then we're going to take one of the small conical tooth washers, they're going to have some teeth on them. You want to make sure that they're facing the bracket. Slide it over the end of the bolt and then take the included nut and put it on there hand tight, for now. We're going to secure both bolts that way. Now you're gonna want to grab your 12 millimeter socket and a 13 millimeter wrench, and we're going to tighten up our hardware. I'm going to come back, again, with a 12 and a 13 millimeter socket and wrench, and I'm going to torque the hardware down to the specified amount in the instructions. Now the frame rail, we're going to have these plastic and rubber plugs, we're going to need to remove all of them. These plastic ones that have the flat notch in it, I'm just gonna take a flat head screwdriver, I'm actually going to unscrew the plug, because these are going to have factory weld nuts in them, so it will be a lot easier just to unthread it and they'll come right out. For the rubber plugs, you just pop them out, and it's going to be a hole in the frame. We'll remove all the plugs on the passenger side, as well. Before we put our hitch up, I want to go over the mounting locations. Our hitch is going to mount to all the factory weld nuts, or the threaded holes here in the frame. We're going to take our M12 bolts, and again a conical tooth washer. We're going to slide the washer over the bolt and we're going to make sure that it's facing up towards the hitch. We're going to be able to thread it in just like that. It's always a good idea to take your bolt, make sure that you can thread it into the frame nice and easy, and there's not going to be rust or corrosion inside the threads. Since all of them are covered up, and they had plugs in them, there shouldn't be anything in there. On the passenger side, I do want to mention, we're going to grab that bracket again, and we're going to sandwich it in between the hitch, before we put our hardware in place. With an extra set of hands, we're going to raise our hitch into place, you want to make sure you go over the exhaust so it winds up on the frame. You're going to line up the holes in the frame with the holes in the hitch, and we're going to take our hardware and loosely put it in place. You want to make sure you get one bolt on each side, just so the hitch will support itself, you don't have to worry about it falling down. With all the bolts in place, go ahead and grab a 19 millimeter socket and we can snug up all our hardware. With that same 19 millimeter socket, I'm going to grab my torque wrench and I'm going to torque all my hardware down to the specified amount in the instructions. You want to make sure you repeat that for any remaining hardware. So if it's in place we can go ahead and put our passenger side panel back up. With these push pins you want to make sure you push the outer section in first then lock it down by pushing the middle in.Now we're not going to be able to reinstall our drivers side panel. If you want to, you can trim it. For our purposes, and per the instructions, we're going to go ahead and leave that off, as well as the tow hook. Now all we have left to do is put our spare tire back up and we'll be ready to hit the road. That will finish up your look at the Draw-Tite custom-fit trailer hitch receiver. Part number 75896 on our 2018 Toyota Highlander.

Fit like OEM and it is very stout. It takes two people to install unless you have a jack to hold up one side while placing bolts on the other side. 567931

Order, delivery timing, and eTrailer communications were outstanding. They even acknowledged that I had been a customer on a previous purchase 7 years ago when I purchased a hitch frame. I mounted this on a 2017 Toyota Highlander. Everything fit fine and it was easy to install. Directions were good. Know that you will need to cut the undercarriage facia on the drivers side so that it can be remounted over the hitch frame. That was easy to do with tin snips. There is also a muffler mount plate that will lower your tailpipe a few inches so that the exhaust does not hit the hitch frame. 364234

Product was exactly as advertised, it fit perfectly on my 2016 Highlander. The installation video on the product page was a great compliment to the instructions that came with hitch. I would recommend using the online video exclusively for mounting instructions. I originally planned to use the hitch for mounting a bike rack but will now use it for a ski rack, trailer pulling, and much much more. 396971

Overall I am satisfied with the Receiver. It fits without any modifications and it looks good. I do wish it was moved up into the bumper cover a little bit more. I personally think it hangs down to much. I would have no problem trimming out the bumper cover, but that is just me. I like the tab so that you can mount the wiring plug type that you have. I was VERY disappointed by either the paint that was used or the lack of metal cleaning, because the paint just flakes off. Fortunately I was able to have it sandblasted and then powder coated. Hope the rust stays away with this process. But I shouldn't have had to do this. Overall the materials and welds are really nice and other than the paint issue I would recommend this Receiver, but only if you have the facility's to have it powder-coated. 548835

I have owned my Draw-Tite Max-E-Loader Trailer Hitch Receiver for a year now, and it has performed very well. I have only used it to hold a bike rack, but I have driven many miles with bikes attached and have had no problems thus far. I had it installed at an RV sales and maintenance business to ensure installation was done properly. 289308

After viewing the video and reading instructions I installed the hitch on my 2014 Highlander myself. Only help I needed was to hold one side up while starting the bolts. Easy task. Haven't connected the wiring harness but after viewing the videos, I expect it not to be a problem either. Saved myself $125.00 by doing this myself. Heavy duty hitch. 135478

Hi! Did you have to do any trimming of the paneling in the rear as indicated by the description?

Just installed this today. Took longer getting the covers back in place than installing it. And you do have to cut the drivers side cover. Not that big of a deal tho but a challenge getting them back on. Very heavy duty hitch! I would not call it hidden tho...full assembly visible and now we will need to be careful not to bang shins on the hitch holder even without the hitchball attached it sticks out.

Install was pretty easy. Mine came a little scratched and with some paint chips, but they wouldn't be visible so I just went ahead and installed it. The exhaust drop bracket didn't seem necessary for my 2015 Highlander. I eyeballed the bracket before installing and tried to line it up, but it seemed to put too much stress on the exhaust system. I also didn't like that the instructions said to discard the "appearance panel" on the driver's side. I trimmed the panel and got it to fit after a few tries. I used product BK4F to mount the 4-pole for a cleaner look and easier access. 595159

Hitch still looks great, the original glossy black color has faded a bit due to the dirt and sun exposure, but nothing that makes it look ugly. I would have given 5 stars but the hitch was deliver with very poor wrapping (no box, just wrapped in plastic) and during the delivery it got scratched, those scratched areas begun to rust so I cleaned them and re-painted myself, and it holds up fine. Another thing I noticed was that the video was very helpful for installation, however when I tried to put the dust cover back up, it didn't go fully in, it required an additional cut on the other side of the dust cover about 2.5 inches long. Unfortunately I don't have a picture, but aside from that following the video instructions were great! 252177

Attached, you will find the photo of the draw-tite hitch installed. I was able to reinstall the driver side appearance panel by making a straight cut about 6 to 8 inches long to allow the hitch bracket to protrude. You will see in the photo that the appearance panel is there. - Kyle 407385

Tow hitch went on as expected, installation direction and video are spot on. Reinstalled driver and passenger plastic panels. Used a cutout tool to trim driverside plastic panel so it would fit. After a little consideration Used muffler bracket somewhat tight fit but not enough to not use the bracket. 641291

The installation went fairly smoothly, but there are two things I think might help you. I have a 2019 Highlander and I had some issues getting the bolts to line up after installing the exhaust plate. It turns out that the bolts on the exhaust plate were in the way of the hitch frame, so I ended up turning the bolts around and loosening them during the install. I tightened them down after finishing the hitch install. I think it will work with just loosening them and not turning them around. My other small issue was the small metal plate that needs to go under the hitch that holds the plastic box thing on the passenger side. That little metal plate has texture to it and is about 1/4" thick. It also has a bend on the end to line up the hole for the bolt. I ended up having to flatten it with a hammer to be able to get the bolt to thread. It would have smashed anyway after tightening the bolt, but using the hammer beforehand helped line up the bolt. Everything else went smoothly and I like the hitch a lot. 600741

First of all, a shout out is required to all the folks at etrailer.com who spent considerable up-front time with me on the phone to make sure that the product I needed and the one I ultimately selected was the ideal fit for my vehicle. Because the car was so new, there was apprehension on my part to order the hitch online but etrailer.com provided knowledgeable assurance and demonstrated above-and-beyond-the-call-of-duty due diligence on my behalf to make sure there were no issues with compatibility. The hitch receiver indeed fits. I ultimately decided to use a garage I trusted to install the hitch for me. I didn't want to roll the car onto ramps and frankly the cost to have a mechanic install it was a price anyone could digest. The guys who installed it rely on etrailer.com also so they were no strangers to the company or their products. This gave me comfort and this too ultimately went smoothly. A couple of observations: the box the hitch was delivered in suffered some trauma along the way so it resulted in a missing part. The garage improvised; It is also worth noting that etrailer.com was outstanding in helping to resolve this issue. For future installations: It is also worth noting that the installation instructions and video on your site recommend leaving one of the molded plastic undercarriage sections off (driver side). The folks at the garage however managed to customize the piece so it too could be seated in its original place for a nice custom fit. (See photos.) I watched as they cut this piece and it didn't seem like a burden to do so perhaps it something others can pursue as well. Finally, a small sticking point but when you look almost directly above the outside edge of the hitch, one side (passenger side) has a bit of reveal. I inspected underneath and all of the attachment points are symmetrical so it appears that the hitch itself may not be exactly symmetrical. It may be a manufacturing blemish of sorts and not necessarily damage during shipping as the holes in which to connect the hitch are aligned. I suspect I am the only one who notices this honestly. See for yourself in the attached photos. At the end of the day, I now have a bike rack on the back of my car and forever spared having to load 2 or more bikes on the roof. This alone is worth its price in gold or at least my happy back. 349447

Installed the hitch yesterday on a 2017 Highlander XLE with a full size spare. I did it alone but it would be a whole lot easier with four hands. I removed the exhaust hanger and installed the hitch with no apparent problem. The supplied plate to lower the exhaust seemed to be putting a lot of stress on the pipe so I didn't use it. After installing the hitch I mounted the hanger and there appears to be plenty of room. If it turns out that I do need to lower the exhaust for whatever reason, adding the plate is real easy. 414703

Great!! Works just fine and there is no rust on it. The exhaust plate mod is unnecessary.

This is my 2nd hitch from eTrailer. Again, great customer service, fast shipping, and perfect fit. The installation video made it easy to install. This was a one man operation. With a little "McGivering" of jack stands and hydraulic lift, this job can be done by yourself in 1 1/2 hours. The hitch came well packaged, well protected, and no problems with cardboard packaging as some other reviewer had. I did cut the driver side plastic covers just to give it a clean look. 339348

Product Review for 75896 How many stars (1-5, 5 being Excellent) would you give the product: If it fits correctly and was not bent in shipping , I would give it a 4. Product Review: I have to see if it was bent in shipment. I am going to try and send you the pictures of how the hitch was received on my front porch. Ordered hitch on a Saturday afternoon, arrived Wednesday morning. Installed the draw-tite trailer hitch on my 2017 Highlander after watching video I found via google for the 2016 Highlander. Took about 3 hours. The hitch is solid and heavy so I set it under the vehicle on blocks as close to the frame holes as possible. Used my table saw and a hack saw to put 2 slits in the plastic under panel on the drivers side to let part of the hitch drop through. Took the panel's plastic fasteners off carefully with screwdrivers and pliers. All parts required were included and fit correctly. Written Instructions were good but I would recommend watching a video beforehand regarding cutting the plastic panel. The 2" receiver fits my carrier basket shaft and my ball mount shaft fine. I use a stabilizer J pin to keep the basket tight. The draw-tite has 2 holes in the receiver to fit a J stabilizer pin. I chose not to install the drop plate for lowering the muffler. Looks great, works great. 400623

Took me about 4 hours to install. One hole of exhaust bracket not drilled out completely. Was easier to align with exhaust bracket removed, then installed after hitch in place. Used a floor jack to lift and hold left side while I raised right side into position. Cut out and reinstalled left side plastic cover, then covered slots with heavy duty tape. Looks very good. 397610

This was the fourth trailer hitch and wiring harness ordered from etrailer.com and installed in different size vehicles over the past 10 years. I also ordered and installed a 7-way pin conversion kit along with an electric brake controller. This was my second such set-up in the past 5 years. The products have always been top-notch. They installed and worked as advertised without a hitch (pun intended). Their installation videos are amazing. The most satisfying part of the ordering process, however, has always been my interaction with etrailer.com sales reps and technicians. Every time I needed a specific product or had questions, a rep took take time to walk me through the process of recommending and/or selecting the exact item that best met my needs. The technicians never hesitated to explain how a product should be installed or what to expect regarding its operation. Installing a brake controller in a Toyota Sienna in one's garage without a lift can be challenging at times depending on the year and vehicle model. I have absolute confidence in etrailer.com, its products, and its support staff. I plan to continue being a loyal customer for many years. 572601

The hitch was everything you said it would be. It was relatively easy to install and looks good on the car. The one problem I have with the order is that the wiring harness isn't the correct one for my vehicle. I have been told that I will have to get a harness from the dealer. 175581

Hitch was quickly received and arrived in excellent condition. Installation was made quite simple by following the video directions and using the written instructions. I installed the unit single-handedly, so I used a rope to support (balance) the receiver from the trunk latch while getting an initial bolt started in each side. This enabled the frame bolts to be installed quite easily with the exception of the last bolt which required slight deflection of the frame flange to enable hole alignment. I trimmed the driver-side underside void cover to permit it to be reinstalled. This was accomplished easily with a small utility handsaw. It took about 2 hours to complete this job. 714484

Only reason it is not 5 stars is because the "powder coating" is pretty weak. Like many people have pointed out it arrived chipped off in some areas but no big deal. Installation was easy and I found the muffler bracket to be unnecessary. Trimmed to driver side panel with a drimel. 697269

The trailer hitch and wire set came as advertised -- the hitch fit perfectly --the most difficult part of the installation was physically lifting the hitch in to place (not the fault of the hitch--due to my age [76] not as strong as I was when younger)- given that, it took me about 2 hours for the installation-- Toyota wanted over four times e-trailers cost; trick trucks wanted over three times e-trailers cost --I as very pleased with the purchase-- also. shipping was prompt 693786

The only reason it didn’t get 5 star was cuz of the amount of scratches on the tubes when unboxed. The sticker that details the capacity of the hitch is almost scratched off. Although the scratches are not visible once on the vehicle the details are difficult to read. This is still an amazing product. Knowing it’s capabilities is what sold me. The videos and comparisons on the website were very helpful it decision making on a hitch. 680794

All the information i received about this product on line was true. Instructions for installation were to the T with both hitch and wiring. Very satisfied with my purchase. I reviewed the videos on the e-trailer site and that made picking the right hitch simple process . I would like to explain the reason I chose the hitch that does stick past rear bumper is due to the fact that the hitch receiver is clearly seen with the back up camera on my Highlander since I don’t use it for inserting a receiver with ball . I use the hitch to put my scooter/ Powerchair carrier on that I back up to and I’m able to align it up by the viewing the receiver on backup camera . The only issue I had was after reading a review from someone who said they didn’t use the muffler bracket I didn’t use mine and needless to say after a short drive I came back and put it on , I should have done it like directions showed and I wouldn’t have had to get back under vehicle again. 652925

Everything worked out as described in the product information and the video for our 2018 Toyota Highlander. We ( my son and I) did use a floor jack to hold the hitch in place while trying to get the frame bolts in place. We haven’t connected anything to the hitch yet but everything feels very solid. 651933

Works like a charm. Had it professionally installed at a garage, which added to expense, but I didn’t have tools to do myself (eg they had to cut away some excess plastic to get it to fit perfectly). But now works great, very sturdy, and almost flush with rear bumper - doesn’t stick out and look huge. Have used it numerous time for intended purpose: adding multi bike rack to take bikes for long rides out of town and/or to bring bikes to mechanic. 633143

Ask the Experts about this Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Compare Trailer Hitches for a 2018 Toyota Highlander
  • There are a number of trailer hitch receivers that fit your 2018 Toyota Highlander and it can be confusing because they have a lot in common; however there are differences as well. Two of them, the Curt # C13200 and the etrailer.com # E98844, are virtually identical. A third, the Draw-Tite # 75896 is also the same basic design and installation. The biggest difference between these is the Curt and etrailer hitches have the hitch pin hole positioned about 1-3/4 inches further under the...

  • Comparison of Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receivers that Fit a 2017 Toyota Highlander XLE FWD
  • The biggest difference is how much of the hitch can be seen once it's installed on your 2017 Toyota Highlander. With the # 75896 you can see the entire crosstube under the Highlander's bumper. However, the # 76156 hides the crosstube behind the bumper so all you see is the receiver tube opening and safety chain loops. The latter is becoming more and more popular for cosmetic reasons. It's also the one I recommend for the same reason. The Curt # C13200 also leaves the crosstube exposed...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver and Wiring for a 2014 Toyota Highlander with Spare Tire
  • The Curt # C13200 is a confirmed fit for your 2014 Toyota Highlander, however, in our installation notes we have that you will NOT be able to store a full sized spare underneath after the hitch is installed. Instead of the Curt option I recommend going with the Draw-Tite # 75896 which has the same weight capacities as its Curt competitor and you can fit a full sized spare underneath after the hitch is installed. If your Highlander has the factory tow package (converter under dash) then...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for 2017 Toyota Highlander with Full Sized Spare Tire
  • For your 2017 Toyota Highlander that has a full sized spare, I recommend the Draw-Tite Class IV Max Frame Round Tube Receiver Hitch # 75896. This hitch is custom-fit for your vehicle and will allow your full size spare tire to remain stowed under the Highlander. I have attached an image that shows the hitch installed on your 2017 Highlander with the spare tire still in place. This Class IV trailer hitch will provide you with a 2 inch receiver opening and a towing capacity of 6,000 pounds,...

  • Trailer Hitch for 2019 Toyota Highlander LE Plus With Full Size Spare Tire on Aluminum Rim
  • While we do offer outstanding trailer hitches for your 2019 Toyota Highlander LE Plus, the etrailer.com Trailer Hitch # E98844 will not work because the width of the aluminum rim on your full-size spare is simply too wide to allow this hitch to fit. It is likely that none of the reviews mention this because those that have that rim, which I believe is standard on the LE Plus, have gone a different direction in their choice of trailer hitch, which would be the options from Draw-Tite. Both...

  • Why Hitch Does Not Fit 2019 Toyota Highlander With Full-Size Spare That Has Aluminum Rim
  • The Curt Trailer Hitch # C13200 will not fit a 2019 Toyota Highlander with a full-size spare that has an aluminum rim because the rim on this spare is just too wide for the hitch to be able to fit. If you have a full-size spare I recommend the Draw-Tite # 75896 because it has the highest capacities of 6,000 lbs towing and 900 lbs tongue weight and can be used with a weight distribution system, something that not all the other hitches for a '19 Highlander are capable of. I have added...

  • I do have an option for you but the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 76156 will not be the best one for your 2019 Toyota Highlander because as you mentioned it requires trimming part of the lower bumper fascia. Unfortunately, I can't advise on removing the panel or what it would look like if done so.
