Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

etrailer.com is a fantastic site! Their experts walk you through the pros and cons of each hitch they offer which I found very helpful in making my decision. Also, they provide how to videos on installation which helps in knowing what tools you'll need for the job and step by step instructions to complete the job. I am totally satisfied with the products I purchased and had the hitch installed and wiring kit in just about 2 hours time in my garage. My only negative would be the instructor for wiring the Curt wiring kit shows you taking the 4 pin connection out the back hatch and the winding it up and stowing it away when finished. I made mine permanent by running my wire through the factory grommet and mounting it to the spot on the hitch provided. Overall A+ for company, product, support and quick delivery after placing my order

This is one of only a few hitch recievers that can be used if you have a full sized spare tire. Install was pretty straight forward with the only difficulty being the 2 most inboard bolt holes required a considerable amount of force to get lined up.

Very robust trailer hitch. Great instructions. Fairly easy for a novice like me to install. I bought a set of deep metric sockets. I'm glad I bought a set because I needed a few more sizes than were listed in the instructions. Fun weekend project. Recommend getting wiring harness at the same time.

So far I am happy with the product. I plan to use it mostly for a bike rack or small trailer. Installation did not go exactly like the video in one small instance. When I installed the exhaust pipe bracket as shown there was not adequate clearance for the hitch to fit between the lower nuts and washers. I had to reverse the direction of the bolts to make room. See photo.

The hitch works perfect. I am not very good with my hands so it took me about 3 hours to install. The video was very helpful. I am leasing my car and needed a hitch which doesn't require cutting for installation, customer support helped me to find exactly what I needed. It's been a year now and I have no problems with the hitch at all.

First of all, a shout out is required to all the folks at etrailer.com who spent considerable up-front time with me on the phone to make sure that the product I needed and the one I ultimately selected was the ideal fit for my vehicle. Because the car was so new, there was apprehension on my part to order the hitch online but etrailer.com provided knowledgeable assurance and demonstrated above-and-beyond-the-call-of-duty due diligence on my behalf to make sure there were no issues with compatibility. The hitch receiver indeed fits. I ultimately decided to use a garage I trusted to install the hitch for me. I didn't want to roll the car onto ramps and frankly the cost to have a mechanic install it was a price anyone could digest. The guys who installed it rely on etrailer.com also so they were no strangers to the company or their products. This gave me comfort and this too ultimately went smoothly. A couple of observations: the box the hitch was delivered in suffered some trauma along the way so it resulted in a missing part. The garage improvised; It is also worth noting that etrailer.com was outstanding in helping to resolve this issue. For future installations: It is also worth noting that the installation instructions and video on your site recommend leaving one of the molded plastic undercarriage sections off (driver side). The folks at the garage however managed to customize the piece so it too could be seated in its original place for a nice custom fit. (See photos.) I watched as they cut this piece and it didn't seem like a burden to do so perhaps it something others can pursue as well. Finally, a small sticking point but when you look almost directly above the outside edge of the hitch, one side (passenger side) has a bit of reveal. I inspected underneath and all of the attachment points are symmetrical so it appears that the hitch itself may not be exactly symmetrical. It may be a manufacturing blemish of sorts and not necessarily damage during shipping as the holes in which to connect the hitch are aligned. I suspect I am the only one who notices this honestly. See for yourself in the attached photos. At the end of the day, I now have a bike rack on the back of my car and forever spared having to load 2 or more bikes on the roof. This alone is worth its price in gold or at least my happy back.

The people at trailer are serious! Who comes back a year later after buying their product and ask if everything is alright?!! Who does that! I don't write reviews, but that makes me feel like that was money well spent. You can only do that when you know that your product is top quality. Thanks etrailer, everything is fine with the hitch.

This is my 2nd hitch from eTrailer. Again, great customer service, fast shipping, and perfect fit. The installation video made it easy to install. This was a one man operation. With a little "McGivering" of jack stands and hydraulic lift, this job can be done by yourself in 1 1/2 hours. The hitch came well packaged, well protected, and no problems with cardboard packaging as some other reviewer had. I did cut the driver side plastic covers just to give it a clean look.

After viewing the video and reading instructions I installed the hitch on my 2014 Highlander myself. Only help I needed was to hold one side up while starting the bolts. Easy task. Haven't connected the wiring harness but after viewing the videos, I expect it not to be a problem either. Saved myself $125.00 by doing this myself. Heavy duty hitch.

Just installed this today. Took longer getting the covers back in place than installing it. And you do have to cut the drivers side cover. Not that big of a deal tho but a challenge getting them back on. Very heavy duty hitch! I would not call it hidden tho...full assembly visible and now we will need to be careful not to bang shins on the hitch holder even without the hitchball attached it sticks out.

Hitch was quickly received and arrived in excellent condition. Installation was made quite simple by following the video directions and using the written instructions. I installed the unit single-handedly, so I used a rope to support (balance) the receiver from the trunk latch while getting an initial bolt started in each side. This enabled the frame bolts to be installed quite easily with the exception of the last bolt which required slight deflection of the frame flange to enable hole alignment. I trimmed the driver-side underside void cover to permit it to be reinstalled. This was accomplished easily with a small utility handsaw. It took about 2 hours to complete this job.

Purchased this for my 2017 Highlander XLE. Customer service was great in helping me decide between this one and another I had in mind. Delivery was quick, but the hitch did come with a few small paint chips and minor blemishes. The etrailer hitch install tutorial was helpful, however I did have a problem with the back bolts lining up correctly, on both sides. In order to get the back holes to line up correctly I needed a wood vice that would give me enough leverage and hold to get the bolt in. I also had to remove the muffler bracket to give me a little more play. I ended up putting the muffler back in place last. All in all the install was easy. Took roughly 1.5hrs with the hitch not lining up as expected. Not sure if the hitch I got was slightly warped, but all said and done it installed as it should have and looks and works great.

Comments
Regarding the small paint chips in the hitch you received the manufactures recommend using a high quality enamel spray paint to touch up the hitch as necessary. You are correct it is possible that the trailer hitch that you received could be what we call flexed. This usually happens in shipping. I have included a help article that has some more details about flexed hitches.

I had the hitch installed by my local auto mechanic. After he was done I noticed he did not replace the existing fascia tab because he claimed the hitch would not fit flat on the frame rail. He used a plastic tie to secure passenger-side fascia.

Comments
I had the hitch installed bt my local auto mechanic. It was quich and easy. But the facia that was removed on the left side was not replaved and should gwt detailed info on how to cut it to fit so I can still use it. It is now stored in my garage with the original fasteners. Let me know if I can get an ytube on the reinstallation. Other wise I like the hitch.
Robert H - 12/07/2020

The driver side appearance panel is not replaced after installation of the hitch, because it interferes with the hitch's install location of the frame. We do not have the measurements of how to make it fit after the hitch is installed. I cannot recommend to trim the panel after the hitch is installed at this time.

The hitch was super easy to install, the wiring harness was just as easy to install. The attached instructions and videos make it all super easy The hitch itself is high quality. My wife and I have pulled trailer after trailer with this hitch, it’s not ever come loose from the frame of her SUV nor have we lost a trailer. Great product at a great price

This is the heavier duty version of the two receivers from Draw-Tite that etrailer offers for the Toyota Highlander. It's perfect because it requires no modification or cutting to the Highlander to get it mounted. The Highlander already has the mounting holes with thread plates built into the frame and this hitch can be installed by a maintenance minded person in under an hour. I paired it with a EAZ-Lift Recurve R3 weight distributing hitch to tow a 4260 lb Forrest River Wildwood X-Lite 19DBXL and it tows beautifully.

I have owned my Draw-Tite Max-E-Loader Trailer Hitch Receiver for a year now, and it has performed very well. I have only used it to hold a bike rack, but I have driven many miles with bikes attached and have had no problems thus far. I had it installed at an RV sales and maintenance business to ensure installation was done properly.

Very satisfied with my purchase. I reviewed the videos on the e-trailer site and that made picking the right hitch simple process . I would like to explain the reason I chose the hitch that does stick past rear bumper is due to the fact that the hitch receiver is clearly seen with the back up camera on my Highlander since I don’t use it for inserting a receiver with ball . I use the hitch to put my scooter/ Powerchair carrier on that I back up to and I’m able to align it up by the viewing the receiver on backup camera . The only issue I had was after reading a review from someone who said they didn’t use the muffler bracket I didn’t use mine and needless to say after a short drive I came back and put it on , I should have done it like directions showed and I wouldn’t have had to get back under vehicle again.

Ordered hitch on a Saturday afternoon, arrived Wednesday morning. Installed the draw-tite trailer hitch on my 2017 Highlander after watching video I found via google for the 2016 Highlander. Took about 3 hours. The hitch is solid and heavy so I set it under the vehicle on blocks as close to the frame holes as possible. Used my table saw and a hack saw to put 2 slits in the plastic under panel on the drivers side to let part of the hitch drop through. Took the panel's plastic fasteners off carefully with screwdrivers and pliers. All parts required were included and fit correctly. Written Instructions were good but I would recommend watching a video beforehand regarding cutting the plastic panel. The 2" receiver fits my carrier basket shaft and my ball mount shaft fine. I use a stabilizer J pin to keep the basket tight. The draw-tite has 2 holes in the receiver to fit a J stabilizer pin. I chose not to install the drop plate for lowering the muffler. Looks great, works great.

This is my second purchase from e-trailer and I couldnt be happier. I ordered it and it arrived in just a few days. I had reviewed the excellent videos and then installed it. As with my first hitch I had purchased, it was for a Toyota Highlander, this one a 2019. It came packed in a heavy duty carton with the directions and hardware secured to the hitch. I reviewed the video again, took some notes on what socket sizes would be needed and got them ready. Needles to say it went as the video showed, no suprises. It took about 3 hours of doing it myself, with a couple of breaks. I am retired and not as agile as I used to be. But everything went fine. The sales people double checked my order with me before purchasing, and confirmed what I needed. Everyone was very helpful and friendly. I had first talked with Teresa J and then Sarah H. and both were very helpful. I would very much recommend E-trailer for your hitch needs!

2019 Toyota Highlander

The installation went fairly smoothly, but there are two things I think might help you. I have a 2019 Highlander and I had some issues getting the bolts to line up after installing the exhaust plate. It turns out that the bolts on the exhaust plate were in the way of the hitch frame, so I ended up turning the bolts around and loosening them during the install. I tightened them down after finishing the hitch install. I think it will work with just loosening them and not turning them around. My other small issue was the small metal plate that needs to go under the hitch that holds the plastic box thing on the passenger side. That little metal plate has texture to it and is about 1/4" thick. It also has a bend on the end to line up the hole for the bolt. I ended up having to flatten it with a hammer to be able to get the bolt to thread. It would have smashed anyway after tightening the bolt, but using the hammer beforehand helped line up the bolt. Everything else went smoothly and I like the hitch a lot.

- 75896
by:
2019 Toyota Highlander

The only reason it didn’t get 5 star was cuz of the amount of scratches on the tubes when unboxed. The sticker that details the capacity of the hitch is almost scratched off. Although the scratches are not visible once on the vehicle the details are difficult to read. This is still an amazing product. Knowing it’s capabilities is what sold me. The videos and comparisons on the website were very helpful it decision making on a hitch.

Install was pretty easy. Mine came a little scratched and with some paint chips, but they wouldn't be visible so I just went ahead and installed it. The exhaust drop bracket didn't seem necessary for my 2015 Highlander. I eyeballed the bracket before installing and tried to line it up, but it seemed to put too much stress on the exhaust system. I also didn't like that the instructions said to discard the "appearance panel" on the driver's side. I trimmed the panel and got it to fit after a few tries. I used product BK4F to mount the 4-pole for a cleaner look and easier access.

etrailer.com is amazing! Ordering was super easy and with all of the great product review and installation videos, I went into the installation with a lot of confidence. Installation took a little time but overall was fairly simple and straightforward. The quality of the hitch itself appears great just from looking at it. I haven't hauled anything with it yet, but I don't have any concerns at this point. Thank you etrailer! Great experience over all!

Tow hitch went on as expected, installation direction and video are spot on. Reinstalled driver and passenger plastic panels. Used a cutout tool to trim driverside plastic panel so it would fit. After a little consideration Used muffler bracket somewhat tight fit but not enough to not use the bracket.

2016 Toyota Highlander XLE. Easiest wiring install ever. Unfortunately, the etrailer hitch-install video does not address replacing the driver's side underbody panel at all, it leaves you hanging whether to discard the panel or reinstall (after making modifications). That's the most frustrating part of the process: no info at all, and why I give only three stars. Only "other customer" pics and reviews helped me thru this part. Otherwise the install went pretty well, and the hitch itself looks and feels great.

Comments
Per the installation instructions the drivers side underbody panel is removed before installation and is not reinstalled.

However, if you are wanting a trailer hitch for a bike rack then we do have trunk mounted bike rack options available for you like the Hollywood Racks Over-the-Top 3 Bike Rack part...

  • Parts Needed to Equip a 2017 Toyota Highlander for Towing
The 5950 GVWR of your 2017 Toyota Highlander includes the total weight of the vehicle. When you are towing a trailer it is the sum of the vehicle weight (which includes passengers, cargo, and any other optional equipment installed on the vehicle) and the Tongue Weight (TW). If your fully loaded and ready-to-go trailer only weighs 3,400 lbs then you have 2,950 lbs to work with. You will want to double check your weights and your manual as well just to make sure and for any specific instructions. If...

  • Remove or Trim the Underbody Panel on a 2014 Toyota Highlander for a Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch
The installation instruction for the Draw-Tite Class IV Trailer Hitch, # 75896, which I have linked, do not include instructions on how to trim the underbody panel. Step 1 of the instructions states that the underbody panel should be removed completely to install the hitch. Removing this panel will not affect the appearance of your Highlander because it is only visible from underneath the vehicle. If you wanted to reinstall the panel, it would be up to the installer to determine where...

  • Trailer Hitch Receiver for 2016 Toyota Highlander with Full Size Spare Tire
Some hitch receivers for the 2016 Toyota Highlander will not allow the full size spare tire to be stored underneath the vehicle where it is intended. However, with the Draw-Tite Max Frame # 75896 it isn't a problem. This is a Class IV, 2 inch hitch receiver. I've attached an install video for you. If your customer also needs a wiring harness it will depend on if they have the factory tow package or not. If they do the Highlander will have a converter under the dashboard and they can...

  • Installation of Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch on 2018 Lexus RX 350L
The Draw-Tite Max-E-Loader Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class IV - 2" # 75896 is a confirmed fit for your 2018 Lexus RX350L and not the RX350 which would use a different hitch # 75540. Unfortunately we don't have a video of an install on your vehicle at this time but we do have an installation on a 2018 Toyota Highlander which also has that same plastic cover with narrow opening. The driver's side panel will be removed and not reinstalled, but the passenger side panel can be reinstalle...

  • Comparison of Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receivers that Fit a 2017 Toyota Highlander XLE FWD
The biggest difference is how much of the hitch can be seen once it's installed on your 2017 Toyota Highlander. With the # 75896 you can see the entire crosstube under the Highlander's bumper. However, the # 76156 hides the crosstube behind the bumper so all you see is the receiver tube opening and safety chain loops. The latter is becoming more and more popular for cosmetic reasons. It's also the one I recommend for the same reason. The Curt # C13200 also leaves the crosstube exposed...

  • Is the Draw-Tite 75896 Compatible with 2017 Toyota Highlander Hybrid?
Yes. The Draw-Tite # 75896 is a confirmed fit on the 2017 Toyota Highlander Hybrid models. This is a fully welded 2" hitch receiver that will work well on your hybrid. If you're planning on doing any towing with this new hitch, you'll need a wiring harness, ball mount and hitch ball to complete your towing setup. I recommend using the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118449, which plugs into your existing wiring and will provide you with a 4 way trailer connector to power the...

  • Trailer Hitch that Fits a 2017 Toyota Highlander with Full Size Spare Tire
Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 75896 is listed as a fit on the 2017 Toyota Highlander with full size spare tire. I have included a link to a video showing an example installation of the hitch for you. If you plan on doing some towing I recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag. If the...

  • Trailer Hitch Fit for 2018 Lexus RX 350L
For the 2018 Lexus RX 350L, the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 75896 is a confirmed fit and a great option. This hitch has a 2" receiver and 6,000 lbs of towing capacity with 900 lbs of tongue weight capacity, though you should check your owner's manual for the towing capacity of your Lexus. For wiring which will give you a 4-way connector and allow you to power your trailer's lights you need Wiring Harness # 119250KIT if you do NOT have the factory tow package or # 118252 if your Lexus has...

  • Does Receiver on Trailer Hitch 75896 Stick Out Past Rear Bumper on a 2014 Toyota Highlander
I believe you are referring to the customer photo for trailer hitch # 75896. The receiver portion will stick out past the bumper on a 2014 Toyota Highlander. I have included an image from the instructions, which are also linked, showing the hitch's final position once installed. The trailer hitches for the 2014 Toyota Highlander are currently all the same way. This is a legitimate concern. I have bumped my leg on a hitch and it is not pleasant! What I recommend is to put in a hitch cover...

  • 2014 Toyota Highlander 2 Trailer Hitch Recommendation for Carrying Bike Rack
Best option for your 2014 Toyota Highlander for a trailer hitch is the Draw Tite part # 75896. This will allow you to keep the full sized spare like you mentioned. Hidden Hitch and Draw Tite are the same but since Hidden Hitch is getting phased out I would recommend sticking with the brand that is sticking around. This will work well with your Thule Apex Swing bike rack too.

There is a trailer hitch that will fit your 2018 Lexus RX350L but it is from Draw-Tite, the Trailer Hitch Receiver # 75896; this is a 2" hitch that is rated to two up to 6,000 lbs and has a tongue weight capacity of 900 lbs, though you will want to be sure you always follow the capacity listed in your owner's manual. For wiring which will give you a 4-way connector and allow you to power your trailer's lights you need Wiring Harness # 119250KIT. I also recommend checking out Ball Mount...
