Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Installation - 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan

Hi there Tiguan owners. Today, on your 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan, we're gonna be taking a look at and showing you how to install Draw-Tite's 1 1/4 inch trailer hitch receiver. And this is what our hitch looks like when it's installed. The cross tube is gonna be hidden behind the bumper, so you won't really see that. You're just gonna see the receiver here at the back. It's a 1 1/4 by 1 1/4 inch receiver, so it's gonna be great for accessories and some very light-duty towing.

It does have a reinforced collar on it to help ensure that it's able to support your accessories when you place them in there. You'll secure your accessories using a half inch hitch pin and clip. Now, one doesn't come included with the hitch but we've got plenty available here at etrailer. On bottom, we've got hoop style safety chain loops that has a very large opening on it that should accommodate just about every shape, size, and style of safety chain. Even our big guy here has no problem going on and off of there.

And now, most of your accessories, when you secure them, they usually come with like an anti-rattle bolt and sometimes even locking mechanisms. But if they don't, we do have anti-rattle and locking hitch pin bolts here at etrailer, so you can protect your investments with those as well. This is a class II hitch that offers a 350 pound tongue weight, which is the force going down on top of our receiver here. And that should be enough for a four-bike platform rack fully loaded up with four bikes. It's not gonna be enough for the largest cargo carrier available here at etrailer, but you will be able to still use a cargo carrier with it and get some of the gear that's in your vehicle here onto the back onto that carrier, freeing up some room inside your vehicle for some more gear or maybe an additional passenger.

It also offers a 3,500 pound gross towing capacity, which is how much that it can pull behind it. And with 3,500 pounds, again, that's gonna be great for some, all of your accessories, you're never gonna exceed that. And for light-duty towing as well. Some examples might be a small utility trailer. Maybe you got like a zero-turn mower.

You'd wanna use it to bring it around and get a little bit of work done. Maybe you've got a small pop-up camper that you wanna bring, or like a Jet Ski trailer, or a really small jon boat, stuff like that. You should be able to accomplish with this hitch as well. So, now I've got some measurements for you to help you when deciding on accessories. From the ground to the top inside edge of our receiver tube, we're right at about 10 3/4 of an inch. This is important when determining if you need a drop, a rise, or a raise shank on your accessories. And since this sits so low, I recommend getting a raise shank on your accessories. And from the center of our hitch pin hole to the edge of our bumper here, we're working at about six inches. This is important when determining if your accessories will contact the bumper when inserted into the receiver, and if they can be placed into the upright storage position without contacting the bumper. So, now that we've covered some of the features of our hitch, why don't you follow along with us in the shop and we'll show you how to get it installed. We'll begin our installation here at the back of the vehicle. We're gonna lower down our exhaust a bit to make the hitch slide up into place a bit easier. Before we lower it down, we're gonna put a strap in place to ensure that it doesn't drop down too far to where it can cause any damage to our exhaust. We're just hooking it on our suspension on each side. And that way, it'll catch this, and then we can use our strap here to control it coming down. So, now that we've got our strap in place, we're gonna head over to the mounts. There's one on each side underneath the frame. You can see the rubber isolator here. We're not gonna take it out of the isolator. We're just gonna remove the bolt where it's attached to the frame there. We're gonna use a 13 millimeter socket to do so. And we're gonna head over to the other side, remove the same bolt but on this side. And that will allow our exhaust to drop down so. And we can use our strap here to kind of ease it down just a little bit further. That should be enough space for us to work with right there. So, the next thing we're gonna need to do is on the side of our frame, on each side, you're gonna have factory bolts that's located there. You have one here. And then if we head towards the rear, you'll have another one there. Now, it is possible that you don't have any bolts there. If you don't have bolts there, you'll need to use the hardware that comes into your kit to fish wire it in. You can see you get some fish wires to be able to feed that. You'll get some spacers, and you'll get bolts as well to be able to feed that in. So, your instructions will have information on how to use those if you need them. In most cases, you're gonna have the bolts here. So, just keep that in mind cause these bolts actually are important for the structure of the vehicle. The bumper beam here that's in the back is actually held in place by these two bolts. So, I would feel like most of these vehicles, they're gonna have this support here at the back. So, we're gonna remove those. We're gonna use a 16 millimeter socket to do so. And since these do attach to this bumper beam, just keep that in mind cause as you loosen these up, that beam can move around and slide around. And if it does move, you're gonna have a bit more difficult time getting these bolts to reinstall cause the nut that's welded on this beam is not gonna be lined up right. And I'll show you, just give you the example of that here. I'm gonna loosen them all up. But I'm not gonna take them all the way out yet, just so I can show you that. So, you have two on this side, two in the same location on the opposite side. I'm just loosening them so I can show you something. So, now that we've got them all loose, if we look up at the bolts, I'm just reaching up. I'm kind of behind the plastic shielding here to the bumper beam. And you can see as I push on that bumper beam, those bolts move around. So, that's just to keep that in mind. When we go to install our hitch and stuff, you may have to kind of push that bumper beam around. You can just kind of reach up in here. And it's a solid black metal beam there. So, you may or may not need to move that at a later step. Just keep that in mind. It's good to know. So, I'm gonna remove all these bolts now. Save these bolts. We're gonna reuse these to secure our hitch. Now, with an extra set of hands, we're gonna lift it up into position. You'll have to kind of tilt it up around the exhaust and the hitch will sit on the outside of the frame. We're then just gonna reinstall our factory bolts. Now, you may or may not need to lift up on that hitch like we kind of talked about. So, once we get it kinda lined up here roughly where it goes, I'm kinda checking it there. That's pretty close to lined up. So, now they'll probably lift up on your bumper beam a little bit here. There we go. And I'm just giving a little bit of pressure upwards on the bumper beam. And I was able to get that rear bolt installed. We want to get at least one bolt on each side started. So that way, the hitch will hold itself up, making it easier to install the rest of our hardware. After you've got one started on each side now, we can just kind of move our hitch and bumper beam around as necessary to get the remaining bolts installed. And you just have to work the two. I kind of pushed up back here to get this to line up, and then I was lifting up with my other hand on the bumper beam. If we look at the middle here, there's a nice big cut-out here. And this is an easy place to kind of maneuver and push up on that bumper beam. So, once you get each one started, then we can just run them back down. We can then go back and torque all of our hardware to the specifications outlined in our instructions. Once you got the hitch all torqued down, we can raise our exhaust back up. You're just gonna simply lift it up and reinstall the bolts. I like to make sure that I get a bolt started on each side before I run them down. There we go. We're gonna use the same 13 millimeter we used to remove them. Snug it back up. And then we can take our strap down. And now, at this point, we're ready to load up our hitch with our favorite accessories and hit the road. And that completes our installation of Draw-Tite's 1 1/4 inch trailer hitch receiver on our 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan..

I normally buy Curt hitches, but they have been out of stock for months. Draw-Tite was available. Hitch arrived in a box with multiple large holes from the hitch loosely placed in the box. The hitch has chips in the powder coat (down to bare metal) in at least 8 different places. Disappointing, as midwest wienters will attack these spots in no time. Installation was not easy as one or both flanges were bent to the point that made what should have been a 15 minute installation into a 4 hour project. I followed the recommended procedure of (reluctantly) scraping off the factory undercoating on the car to create clearance, which was not enough. I ended up using a 4 ton floor jack under the hitch to coax it into place. Chain loops also had welding splatter in many places from the production process. Your mileage may vary.

The hitch was well made and really easy to install. The installation videos were very helpful.

The fit and integration to the vehicle is well designed, with most of the hitch hidden behind the bumper and only the receiver tube visible.

The powder coat finish does not adhere well to the edges of the laser-cut parts, so I had to touch up a lot of bare metal where the powder coating flaked off.

The three previous curt hitches I purchased for other vehicles installed and fit flawlessly. This one required me to heat up and bend it (trial and error) and modify the mounting points on the car by grinding off some protective coating. Not the process I bargained for. Unit is on the car now and seems to work fine. I recommend putting the bumper replacement hitch on instead. More expensive process but you get better ground clearance as well.

Comments
It sounds like one of the mounting arms on your hitch may have been flexed. This can happen in shipping and warehousing because the mounting arms are made from a mild steel that is intended to flex and move with the underside of your vehicle. This allows the hitch to flex instead of crack with we hit a pothole. I have linked a help article with some different ways to correct hitch flex for installation.

2020 Volkswagen Tiguan

It SHOULD be easy to install on a VW Tiguan, it's just 4 bolts.... Can do in driveway without even jacking up a car or needing a lift.
1. The initial two bolts basically require 2-3 people to get the bolt started. One hold the hitch, one to put in the bolt, and one to slide the piece with the treads into the position to make the bolt go it, it's finicky.
2. Likely there will be so much sealant interference on the floor plan you will need to use a hand jack put push it up into position for the second set of bolts. You really can't cut/scrape enough of it away to fit by hand as video instructions give.

I haven't installed this hitch yet but looks very sturdy and is what I expected.
There are installation instructions to mount it to my Tiguan but none to help you cut the body part under the bumper to fitit. If you look on site you will find it. I think this should be in the box with the hitch. One other thing, The packaging is not quite sturdy enough as UPS delivered it with 4 holes polked in the box as the hitch can move around in the box as they handle it. Maybe some dunage added to the box would help prevent this. The result was some scratches on the braces and other parts. Not too bad as this will be under the car in the elements, it may start to rust sooner than desired. Working with ETrailer was very pleasant, delivery notification and their desire to provide top service is outstanding.
