Video Transcript for Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Installation - 2020 Honda Odyssey

Hey guys, Connor here at Today we're going to be taking a look at the Draw-Tite trailer hitch here for our 2020 Honda Odyssey. So this trailer hitch here is going to have a Class II rating with a one and quarter inch receiver tube opening. Now this is going to allow us to do many different things, such as tow a trailer if we want to do that. Now if we are towing, we're going to have a 3,500 pound rating for the gross trailer weight, which is the amount we can pull outward. And our tongue weight rating is going to be 350 pounds, which is going to be the downward force on the receiver tube.

So the other thing you maybe using your trailer hitch for, probably more common for this vehicle, is bike racks, if we want to hit the trails or cargo carrier, if we need to free up some space inside the vehicle.Now it does sit behind the bumper a little bit, so it's not going to stick out. We don't have to worry about banging our shins on it, and it's just going to give it overall a better look. So on the side of the receiver tube here, we're going to have our half inch hole here, which is going to be used for a half inch hitch pin and clip. Now this hitch pin and clip is going to be used for securing our accessories, such as our ball mount or bike racks and cargo carriers. Keep in mind, these are sold separately, most hitch accessories are going to come with them, but we do have locking accessories as well if you would like to obtain one.

At the bottom of our receiver tube and the bottom of our cross tube here, you're going to see our two very large safety chain tabs. And these are going to perfectly accommodate some of our smaller S-hooks, which we'll find on our smaller and medium duty trailers.So we're going to have plenty of room for those without any interference from our hitch pin. So now we have a couple of measurements here for you. The first one is going to be for ground clearance, the distance from the ground to the top inside edge of the receiver tube opening. This is going to be most useful for selecting our ball mount, so we can get the correct rise and drop.

This measurement here is going to be about 12-3/4 inches. Then finally, the last measurement we have here is the distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the outside edge of our bumper, that's going to help us for selecting our folding accessories, such as our bike racks or cargo carriers, so we can make sure they don't interfere with the vehicle while in the stowed position. This measurement here is going to be about two and a half inches. So our trailer hitch sits pretty close to the edge of the bumper. So we shouldn't have any issues with any folding accessories.So in regards to installation, this is definitely going to be something you can do at home by yourself.

We're not going to need to lift, we're not going to need any special tools and it features bolt-on installation, so we're going not going to have to drill into the vehicle at all. It's going to feature a simple bolt-on installation, three bolts for side, we're simply going to lower the exhaust, raise the hitch up into position, we have to remove a few panels, which are super easy to do, and that's pretty much it. So I'm definitely going to encourage you to try this one at home by yourself. So now that we've gone over some of the benefits and features, let's jump right into installation and show you how easy this is to do yourself. So to start our installation today, we're to come over here on the passenger side of the vehicle. And if we look directly above our tailpipe here, we're going to see we have this little plastic deflector here.So we need to go ahead and remove that. In order to do that, there's going to be two push pin fasteners here. We're just going to simply take a trim panel tool or a flathead screwdriver, and we're just going to pry out that center section there, because once we do that, the rest of the fasteners should come down. So the next thing we need to do is, we need to come over to the driver's side of the vehicle here, and directly behind out rear wheel we're going to see the skid shield here, which needs to come out. In order to remove this, we're going to have some push pin fasteners here on the outside. We're going to have a 10 millimeter bolt on the inside, as well as a Phillips head screw, which we'll show you next. Let's first go ahead and get these pushpin fasteners out.So once we have all of our push pin fasteners on the outside removed, as we said, we're going to have a 10 millimeter screw on the inside here and then inside of the wheel well, actually we're going to have a Phillips head screw we need to remove as well. So now we should be able to remove our panel here and set this aside. So the next thing we're going to do is, we're going to come along to either side of our frame rail here. We're going to locate our three existing weld nuts; one here, one here, and one back here. And we're going to be using these to install our hitch. So we're just going to go ahead and clean these out since they are on the under side of the vehicle, that way we don't have any issues or threading in our bolts. So we're just going to be taking a spray lubricant here and a nylon brush. And we're just going to clean those out real good.Again, we're going to do this for both sides. So the next thing we're going to do is, it's going to depend if our model has mud flaps here, if it does have mud flaps, we need to go ahead and remove our rear mud flap here. So here's our remaining two fasteners here. We're going to go ahead and take these out. Keep in mind if we do have mud flaps, we're only going to be removing the mud flap on the driver's side of the vehicle. So the next thing we're going to do is, we're going to go ahead and drop our exhaust here. We're going to have two hangers here that we need to remove, but before we do that, we're going to go ahead and take a strap here and just connect it to two bottom points here on our trailing arms. That way we can support the tail pipe here, we break these hangers free. We're just going to take a penetrating oil here, just any sort of lubricant you have here, we're just going to spray down the rubber isolator here, where the exhaust hanger inserts into it.So now, we can go ahead and pry the rubber isolator from our hanger here using one of two tools; we have an exhaust hanger removal tool, or we have a pry bar tool. The pry bar tool you're probably going to have at home, so that's what you can use for the step. So we should inaudible 00:06:17 it off like that, then we have our strap here supporting our exhaust. So before we raise the hitch up into position on the vehicle, we're going to go ahead and get our hardware ready. We're going to take our hex bolts, our conical tooth washers, the teeth on the washer need to be facing up towards the hitch. We're going to need three of these for each side. So we're going to go ahead and assemble these and set them on the side of the vehicle. That way, when we get our hitch up into position, they're right there where we need them.So now with an extra set of hands, we can go ahead and raise our hitch up into position on the vehicle. We need to start first with the passenger side, so we can come over the exhaust here. And then, we can loosely install our hardware. So now we're going to take our 19 millimeter socket here, and we're just going to snug up our six bolts, three on each side. So now we're going to take our same 19 millimeter socket, we're going to torque down all six of our bolts to 76 foot pounds. You can go ahead and repeat that process on our other bolts.So now we need to go ahead and take our splash shield, our appearance panel, whenever you want to call it, that was installed over the driver's side, and we need to go ahead and make a notch here as our instructions state, to make clearance for our trailer hitch so we can reinstall this back on the vehicle. And we're going to be coming about an inch inward, which is pretty much going to put us right to the edge of this little slot here. And we're going to be coming 10 inches up. So we're just going to go ahead and mark our 10 inch mark. It's going to be right here, out there. Now we're just going to go ahead and trim this out, but they set of tin snips here. We're going to come directly on the inside of this little groove here. That's pretty easy to cut. If you have even just a razor blade or a straight razor at home, you should be able to get through this pretty easy, we're using some tin snips here though.So now that we have our panel trimmed here, we can go ahead and re-install this along with our mudflap guard, if our vehicle is equipped with such, which ours was, as well as our exhaust deflector. So we can go ahead, install these three components now to finish up our installation. Don't forget, we do need to raise our exhaust back up into position here now. And that's going to do it today for our look into the installation of the Draw-Tite trailer hitch here for our 2020 Honda Odyssey.

Trailer hitch receiver arrived in excellent condition with all necessary hardware and written instructions. It was fairly easy to install (better if you have a second person on the driver's side of the hitch while 19 mm carriage bolts are finger-tightened by the other person on the passenger side of the hitch. Looks clean and holds a bike rack with two kids bikes attached; see photo. I'm also very pleased with the fast and courteous service of etrailer staff who processed my order and the reasonably priced well made trailer hitch I purchased.

The hitch is still going strong after one year of use. No signs of any rust or loosening of the mounting bolts. All in all, a great product.

  • Comparing Draw Tite and Curt Hitches for 2019 Honda Odyssey for Carrying Bike Rack
    The Curt hitch part # C1275 and the Draw Tite part # 36633 that both fit your 2019 Honda Odyssey are both great Class II hitch options. Neither would have the advantage in terms of visibility but we've found that the Curt hitches tend to have a tougher powder coat finish and overall an edge in terms of overall quality control so the Curt would be my recommendation. This would work great with a 1-1/4 inch hitch Kuat bike rack like the NV2.0 part # NV12G.
