Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2017 Buick Encore - Draw-Tite

Speaker 1: Today in our 2017 Buick Encore, we're going to take a look at and also show you how to install the draw tite custom fit class two trailer hitch receiver; offering the inch and a quarter by inch and a quarter receiver tube opening. It's part number is 36554.Here's what our hitch is going to look like installed on the Encore. You can see we're going to have the smaller, round cross tube. It's just about all the way across the vehicle with the exception of here at the exhaust. It stops just a little bit short. Now, the center of the hitch is the receiver tube open itself.

That's going to be an inch and a quarter by an inch and a quarter opening. This is a class two hitch, so it's going to work out really well for your cargo carriers, bike racks, ball mounts, things of that nature. To secure all those items in place, you're going to use the half inch diameter hole. You want to choose an accessory that's rated for class two use, but there's a good amount of room around there and easy access to it. Whatever type you might choose, you shouldn't have any issue using. There's a band style reinforcement collar that's going to go around the end of the receiver tube opening there. It kind of sturdy's that up a little bit.

You'll see the safety chain connection points here at the bottom. They're a plate style. There's a really large opening there, so whatever style of chain you might be connecting, I don't think you're going to have any issues with.As far as weight capacities are concerned, the hitch gives us a 300 pound ton weight rating. That's the maximum downward force we could be here at the receiver tube opening and we have a 3,500 pound gross trailer weight rating. That would be the total weight of your trailer and anything you we're going to load up on it.

Of course, you do want to check the owner's manual on the Encore to see what its two rating is and go off whichever set of numbers is the lowest.A few measurements that will be helpful when selecting your ball mount, bike rack, or hitch cargo carrier would be from the ground to the inside top edge of a receiver tube opening. We've got about twelve-and-a-quarter inches. Then from the center of our hitch pin hole to the outer most edge of our bumper, it's about five-and-a-quarter. One thing to keep in mind with the lower ground clearance, you might want to choose items that have a raised shank to help promote better clearance at the rear. When we begin our installation, we need to lower down the exhaust slightly, just to give us room to get in and work. We've got a hanger located on the driver side right here and also on the passenger side.

Before removing those, we're going to use a support strap. That way, when we release those, the weight of the exhaust will come down on the strap and not just hang. It's a good idea to use a little bit of spray lubricant here just to make it a little easier to slide those off. We're going to use a large screwdriver or a pry bar and just give it a pull on the backside, just like that. Now, we'll put just a little slack in our strap there and allow it to come down. The passenger side is going to have two attachment points. We've got the hole right here almost to the back of the frame. Then if we go in front of our exhaust hanger bracket, there's going to be one located right there. We're going to fish wire our carriage bolt and spacer block up and in and we're going to use this larger hole as our access hole to get the hardware in place. I want to remove the brake line just to open that up a little bit, give us a little bit more room. There's a christmas tree type fastener above it there. I'm going to start with the rear most hole, I'm going to place my bolt leader in, we want that to go forward through the frame, and then come out of the access hole. We'll feed on our spacer block, thread on our bolt, slide the spacer block up and in, and then our bolt. Pull that right down through and we'll repeat that same process for our forward location. Here on the drivers side we've got the same situation, but we're only going to be putting in the forward attachment point, which would be right here. For the rear, we're going to use one of the weld nuts right here on the side of the frame. Now, on both sides we'll just push that keeper right back into the frame. Now, with the help of an extra set of hands, we'll get our hitch raised up into position. We're going to guide it over the passenger side exhaust there first. Then you'll stick those pole wires down through the holes and just draw them down through. On the drivers side, we need to check two things here. We're going to put our pole wire through just like we do on the passenger side and use that to guide our hitch up into position, but we need to check for gaps. You'll see on the forward hole location there, and on the rear hole location, we've got a space right here between the frame. If this gap exists in your hitch, that's where you're going to use your bevel washer. Also, if you have the gap here between the frame and the top inaudible 00:04:55 of the hitch, you're going to use another square hole spacer.Let's put our square hole spacer just right up on our hole wire there and bring that down through the hook also, make sure our carriage bolt passes through it, and then for our top attachment point, we're going to place this in. Our hitch bracket will be here and this is going to go between the hitch and the frame. Just like that. Then that we can thread into the weld nut. If yours doesn't have a weld nut on the frame channel there, you're going to use pull wire method and bring your carriage bolt though. Each carriage bolt is going to get one of our conical tooth washers. You want the teeth to face up toward the hitch and then we've also got a nut thread on there. You're also going to place a conical tooth washer on the hex bolt, if you do have the weld nut, so keep that in mind too. To snug these up, and torque them, we're going to use an eleven-sixteenth socket. With everything torqued down properly, you want to slide your exhaust isolators back on, remove the strap, and your hitch will be ready for use. With our exhaust back in place, that's going to complete our installation of the draw tite custom fit class two trailer hitch receiver, part number 36554, on our 2017 Buick Encore.

Perfect fit to our 2014 Encore. Followed the procedure of the video and it took about an hour. I worked on the floor with the car on ramps. When you put the final bolt in, the one that fits a threaded hole, the other three bolts need to be loose finger tight. The hitch needs to be able to move around a little as you slide that final spacer in. That's the one taped to the top of a paint stick. I had everything finger tight without any movement on my first try. Did not work. Keep it movable until all four bolts are started. 566290

While not the 40 min install the instructions suggest. The hitch is well designed and was no drilling and fit perfectly. The bolt wire pulls are awesome and eliminated a lot of aggravation 565365

The hitch fitted perfectly. I had difficulty getting the horizontal bolt started due to the awkward location. I machined a 1/4" lead at thread root diameter and made sure the threads were burr free. This allowed me to get better alignment with the chassis nut. I also taped the wedge spacer to the end of a paint stick so I could insert the spacer up between the chassis and the frame. 414919

Was very easy to install needed a hand to start the nuts .One hour 59 minute from opening box to finish. Will use this hitch for carrying our bikes, the wires for the bolts were a life saver. 293195

Great hitch, heavy duty, love it. e-trailer is fantastic! Instructions for the install were great and the video was even better. Not sure if I wanted to do it myself but since I have purchased 3 hitches from etrailer in the past they do make it easy and clear so I thought Id give it a try. The video is what made me want to give it a try. Fishing the bolts was not too bad. I did not have to pop out brake line fastener as in video, I just slightly pushed brake line to make enough room for the head of the bolt as thats the only thing that got in the way. Thanks to another reviewers tip,I also taped the wedge washer to a paint stick to make it easy to insert between hitch and frame. If not for the great video on this web site I probally would not have given it a try, so thanks to etrailer for that. Im 58 and it took me a little over an hour, so overall not too bad. And with my sons help holding it up while I bolted it down I saved a ton of money. Thanks to everyone at etrailer for a great and very detailed web-site. 476757

According to the car factory I'm not supposed To pull anything with my 2015 Buick Encore Any way I installed but I haven't used yet Probably I won't be able to pull a 10' feet trailer With it, but in the near future I will connect A metal basket to carry something . Thanks for asking. 479893

I purchased this Class II hitch for my 2017 Buick Encore to carry a bike rack. I also ordered a 2-bike Hollywood hitch mounted bike rack from etrailer.com. Both arrived the same day in good condition. However the hitch had broken through the box in a couple of places and paint was scuffed down to bare metal on one small spot. I brushed some black enamel over that one spot and you can't tell it was ever there. Otherwise the hitch arrived in good condition with all the parts necessary for installation. I haven't had the hitch installed yet, but I have no doubt it'll fit as advertised. Good hitch for the money. 388211

The fit is EXACT ! Install was easy ! The entry to my garage has a slight incline so backing the car in to the point of greatest floor clearance at the rear bumper allowed for enough ground clearance to work without the need to raise the vehicle. Most difficult part was removing the rubber muffler hangers. Install the 4 bolts, torque to specs, slip the rubber muffler mounts back in place and it's done ! My install time was 30 minutes. Watching the install video is an excellent idea as it shows everything that needs to be done and how to do it. 293165

Ford Transit Connect

I received my trailer hitch on the day indicated but was shocked at the condition of the box, it was totally trashed with huge holes at both ends. Was concerned that the smaller pieces had fallen out & been lost in transit. Was VERY relieved & happy that the hitch was unharmed & all the nuts & bolts were in a sealed, heavy-duty plastic bag & firmly attached to the hitch receiver...nothing missing! My car dealership attached the bike-rack hitch to my car with no trouble at all. They were very pleased that it fit exactly as described on the etrailer website & was very easily installed using the hardware provided. The receiver is visible below the bumper but a bit recessed & in no way interferes with using the hatch to get into the back of my SUV. Will attach the new bike rack this Saturday & hope that all goes well. So far the entire process from purchase to car attach has gone very smoothly & just as the etrailer.com service tech Bill P. said that it would. Very pleased!!! If the bike-rack doesn't fit the hitch as advertised, I'll write a second review but for now the 5-star rating definitely fits my experience with etrailer.com, Bill P.'s purchase assistance, & the installation process. THANKS Bill P. & etrailer.com! 450101

This hitch went on my 2015 Buick Encore. This was the first trailer hitch I ever installed. It took me about an hour after receiving the proper hardware and instructions. I did think the instructions could have been a little more detailed. For example, the access hole had a brake line running right across the middle that had to be pulled away about an inch. Also the hole had to be made about an eighth of an inch larger for the spacers to fit into the frame. None of this was mentioned in the instruction. Otherwise everything went well. I received the hitch in about 2-3 days after I ordered it. 195058

We purchased the Draw-tite Class II hitch for our 2017 Buick Encore. We chose it for two reasons: 1. It was the heavier duty of the two choices, it can pull 3500 LBS and has a 300 LBS tongue weight 2. It had the easiest installation. The install videos are spot on, I can't add anything more. I did on my back on my driveway, took less than an hour. We bought it to move our tow dolly from place to place. All the parts were in the box no extra parts required. I would highly recommend it. 548267

We purchased 4 items: the trailer hitch, adaptor to fit our 2 inch bike rack, anti rattling devise and a lock so we don't loose the bike with the rack. Customer service was outstanding in recommending each product that would specifically fit my Buick Encore. I will submit a picture since I didn't see anything posted for the 2019. Buick would have cut the bottom of the bumper which I assume would lift the rack a bit higher. Our bike rack is really meant for a larger vehicle. The Buick rack would most likely be a bit smaller. I have bottomed out on the rack, not the hitch. Overall, it's worked out well and we're able to carry our bikes. 590873

I have received my hitch with minor problems, as the box looked like it was in a war zone all torn up in multiple places. Besides being stapled all over the place, one side must have came open in route as it was taped a lot before delivery to my address. However, with that being said, I am well pleased with the product itself. I am currently taking off my muffler to get my hitch on to my car. 506297

Watched the video for installation on my vehicle and it helped a lot. Once I got the exhaust dropped down, it went pretty fast. All parts fit to install it, just a little tight to get my GlideAway bike carrier into the receiver. Took a lot of grease and jiggling. I just hope the parts do not rust quickly here in the northwest. But overall, a good buy. I recommend it. 503218

This was seriously a great purchase. I was super upset when trying to help my girlfriend move and didn't realize she didn't have a hitch receiver... Big boyfriend fail on my part. So the move was postponed a couple days and it saved me $800 not having to rent. After I ordered this, a few days later it arrived, and within 45 minutes I had it installed. It was nice it came with additional components and spacers to do exactly what I needed when the model year had a different configuration than I expected. I was able to mount it by myself but but I do suggest a asking for a little help. I could have probably done it in 20 minutes with a lending hand. The wires that thread on the bolt for pulling through the mounting holes are SO EPIC! You can be pretty rough with the pulling if it gets stuck and it doesn't come unthreaded. If I buy get a vehicle again without a hitch I know I will be coming back here to get the hitch receiver for sure. Thanks for an awesome product! Cheers! 490840

  • Mobility Scooter Carrier for a 2015 Buick Encore
  • I'd recommend buying the strongest hitch available, which for the 2015 Buick Encore is the Draw Tite Class II, part # 36554. This hitch will provide you with a 1-1/4 inch receiver and a tongue weight capacity of 300 pounds, allowing you to carry the mobility scooter and carrier on the rear, provided it has a 1-1/4 inch hitch. You will want to verify your vehicle's total capacity with the manufacturer or owner's manual. In this particular situation, you definitely do not want to...

  • Bearing Buddy Recommendation for Hub Bore of 2.32 inches
  • The closest Bearing Buddy we have to fit a hub bore of 2.31 inches is the # BB2328SS. This is for a hub bore of 2.328 inches. You might measure yours again with a digital caliper like part # 36554.

  • Do Trailer Hitch Receivers for 2017 Chevrolet Trax Include a Wiring Harness
  • We do have two trailer hitch receivers to fit your 2017 Chevrolet Trax: a Curt # C11527 and a Draw-Tite # 36554. Neither of them include a wiring harness. As of right now we only carry one wiring harness for your Trax, the Tekonsha # 118751. It plugs into a factory connector that's in your rear cargo area under the floor cover and some interior paneling. Then you'll need to run a wire to the Trax's battery through the included fuse holder. The fuse is included as well. This harness...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for 2014 Buick Encore
  • For a trailer hitch for your 2014 Buick Encore, I recommend the Draw-Tite Class II Trailer Hitch Receiver # 36554. It has a tongue weight capacity of 300 pounds and a gross trailer weight capacity of 3,500 pounds. I have attached an installation video for you to review. However, please keep in mind that when looking at the owner's manual for your vehicle, it does state that the Buick Encore is neither designed nor intended to tow a trailer. If you do decide to do this, you can use the...

  • Class II Trailer Hitch Fit for 2016 Chevrolet Trax
  • We do offer a Class II trailer hitch for your 2016 Chevrolet Trax. For a trailer hitch I recommend the Draw-Tite # 36554. This hitch offers a 300 pound tongue weight with a 3,000 pound towing capacity, but you will want to be sure to not exceed the capacity of your Trax when choosing what to tow. I have attached the installation instructions for this hitch, as well as an installation video on a similar vehicle, a Buick Enclave, for you. Class II trailer hitches, like the # 36554, offer...

  • How to Measure a Spindle to Identify it
  • The easiest way to determine what spindle your trailer has is to use a dial or digital caliper like the part # 36554 to measure it where the bearings and grease seal ride. I attached a picture that shows where these measurements are. If where the inner bearing rides measures 1.378 inches, outer bearing 1.063 inches, and then the seal 1.719 inches the hub part # AKIHUB-545-35-K that you referenced will fit. This is the number 84 spindle.

  • Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 2015 Buick Encore
  • At the time the answer you are referring to was written, Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 36554 was not a confirmed fit for the 2015 Buick Encore. They have since tested it and it is now a confirmed fit for 2013 to 2015 Buick Encores. If you plan on towing with the hitch the correct ball mount is # 36071. For a 1-7/8 inch ball use # 19256 and for a 2 inch ball use # 19258. And for trailer wiring you can use # 118588 to add a 4-Way flat connector.

  • Roof Cargo Bag, Trailer Hitch, and Cargo Carrier Recommendations for a 2015 Chevy Trax
  • By XL cargo bag I believe you are talking about Rightline bag # RL100S30. This bag will fit on vehicles with or without a roof rack (side rails or crossbars). The bag is 48 inches long and 40 inches wide so compare that to the available space on your 2015 Chevy Trax. You don't want the bag hanging over the sides of the vehicle roof! If the roof rack on your Trax is just the side rails and there is no gap beneath them to attach a strap then I recommend adding the car clips # RL100600...

  • Available Trailer Hitches For 2016 Buick Encore
  • The only trailer hitches available for your 2016 Encore are Class l and Class ll hitches like part # 36554 and part # C11527. The Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, part # 36554 is a Class ll and has the higher tongue weight and towing capacity than the Curt Class l hitch, part # C11527. Both hitches have a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. If you can let me know what you wish to use the trailer hitch for I will be glad to see if we can make some recommendations that will work for you.

  • Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2014 Buick Encore
  • For your 2014 Buick Encore you will first want to start with a hitch that has been confirmed to fit your vehicle. For that you would want the hitch part # 36554. This hitch has a 1-1/4 inch opening and will work well with the Thule Helium Bike Rack part # TH9043 that you referenced.

  • Availability of a Plug and Play Wiring Harness Kit for a 2016 Chevy Trax
  • The plug and play wiring harness that's available for your 2016 Chevrolet Trax is the Tekonsha # 118659. I've attached an install video for you to take a look at. If you don't have a trailer hitch already I recommend the Draw-Tite # 36554. This is a Class II hitch with a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. The recommended ball mount for you is # 36061 which includes a pin and clip. Then for a hitch ball use either # 19258 for a 2 inch ball or # 19257 for a 1-7/8 inch.

  • What Parts Are Included with Class II Hitch 36554 for 2014 Chevrolet Trax
  • The Draw-Tite Class II Hitch # 36554 for the 2014 Chevrolet Trax includes installation hardware. You may care to review the two linked help articles on hitch installation. The only specialized tool you'll need is a torque wrench, which is required to ensure the included fasteners are tightened to the manufacturer's specs. Those specs are included in the linked instructions. For a ball mount use # 36061, for a pin and clip use # PC2 and for a 1-7/8-inch ball use # 19257.

  • Recommended Cargo Carrier with Class II Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver on a 2015 Chevrolet Trax
  • First of all good choice on the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver # 36554. It's what I would have recommended if that had been your question. With the Draw-Tite installed on a 2015 Chevrolet Trax there is about 7 inches from the hitch pin hole to the edge of the vehicle's fascia. This is why of the three you mention I would pick the Curt # C18110. It has 3-3/4 inches of rise which you mentioned you like and there is 6-3/4 inches from the hitch pin hole to the beginning of the rise...

  • Using a 2 Inch Bike Rack on a 2017 Buick Encore with 1-1/4 Inch Trailer Hitch
  • Like you said there are only 1-1/4 inch hitches (Class I and II) for your 2017 Buick Encore. You could use Draw-Tite hitch # 36554 with adapter # HTAD to use a 2 inch bike rack. However, the use of the adapter reduces the tongue weight capacity of the trailer hitch from 300 pounds down to 150 pounds. The Q Slot # PS63138 weighs about 65 pounds meaning you will only have 85 pounds of capacity left over. As long as the combined weight of the bikes is less than 85 pounds you would be within...

  • Can Trailer Hitch Receiver be Used for Towing on 2013 Buick Encore
  • Many Buick Encore owners elect to install a hitch receiver, like the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver, # 36554, on their vehicle in order to transport their bicycles with a hitch mounted rack. Due to the fact that the owner's manual for your 2013 Buick Encore states that this vehicle is neither designed nor intended to tow a trailer, a towing or tongue weight capacity for your vehicle is not provided. I can not recommend going against the owner's manual when it comes to towing but if...

  • Is Drawbar, Hitch Pin, and Clip Needed to Use a Trailer Hitch to Carry Bikes on a 2013 Buick Encore
  • The drawbar (also known as a ball mount or stinger) fits into the trailer hitch receiver and gets fitted with a ball. This would be used to tow a trailer. If you never plan on using the 2013 Buick Encore for towing then you will not need a ball mount or ball. Most hitch accessories like bike racks come with a hitch pin or thread hitch bolt so a pin may not be needed either. A regular hitch pin, like # PC2, is held into place with the included clip which is similar to a cotter pin. It...

  • Does Access Hole On 2015 Chevrolet Trax Need To Be Enlarged For Trailer Hitch Installation
  • Per the attached instructions for the Draw-Tite Hitch, part # 36554 there is no mention of enlarging the access hole. If you are planning on towing with your Trax I recommend a ball mount like part # 36061. This has a 3-1/8 inch rise and uses a ball with a 3/4 inch shank diameter like part # 19258 for a 2 inch hitch ball and part # 19257 for a 1-7/8 inch hitch ball. If you need trailer wiring I recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector, part #...
