Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2011 Subaru Forester - Draw-Tite

Today on our 2011 Subaru Forester we're going to be taking a look at and installing the Draw-Tite Class 2 1-1/4 trailer hitch receiver, Part Number 36521. This fully welded Class 2 Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver is going to be ideal for light-duty towing and carrying accessories such as bike racks or cargo carriers. It features a 3,500 max gross trailer weight rating and a 300 pound max tongue weight rating. That weight is going to be the weight pushed down on the inside of the receiver tube. It has a welded on reinforced collar and a fully welded on quake for durability. Here on the bottom we have a welded on loop for our safety chains. We'll give you some measurements just to help you when picking out accessories for your hitch like ball mounts, bike racks or cargo carriers. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outside edge of the bumper is about 6-1/4 inches. From the inside top edge of the receiver down to the ground measures about 13-1/2 inches. To begin our install we're going to get our car ready for our hitch.

Now per our instructions, it just tells us to lower our exhaust, but I found it easier just to remove the mufflers on either side and take them off completely. We'll take our 14mm socket and our 14mm wrench and take it out just like that. Now we can remove our exhaust hanger here. I'm going to hit it with some spray lubricant and make it easier to get off. Then we'll drop down our side from there and we can repeat the same process on the other side. Now we can remove our rubber plug.

Take some pliers and pop it loose. Now as you can see our hardware will not fit. We need to widen that hole. We're going to be using a step mitt. If you don't have one, you can just use a file. Now keep in mind we just need to make the hole big enough that we can fit our hardware through.

Perfect. We'll do the exact same thing for the plug on the opposite side. Now we also need to remove our bolt here that's holding a portion of our heat shield because it's in the way of our hitch. Let's take a 10mm and take that out. Repeat the same process for the other side. Now let's go ahead and remove the plug here.

Now we're ready to install our hardware. Let's go ahead and grab our fish-wire and we're going to feed this end here up through the front hole here. We're going to come out the large hole. Just like that. We can hold it in position. We'll take our block that works with our 7/16" carriage bolt, and we'll take the carriage bolt and then thread it on. You'll also want to be sure you're using the correct fish-wire. There are two separate sizes. Once we've got that threaded on we can put the block through first, followed by our carriage bolt and bring that through the front. For the rear one here, we're going to be using our larger fish-wire for our 1/2" carriage bolt. What we can do is take our larger block and then our 1/2" carriage bolt and thread that on. We'll feed that up through the hole here and then the block and then we're going to pull that down like so. Then we can repeat the same process on the other side. Now let's go ahead and raise our hitch up into position. It's a good idea to get an extra set of hands. Be sure not to push that hardware back up into the frame. Once you've got it up there we can go ahead and take our conical tooth washer. We want to make sure we grab the correct one that goes over our 1/2" bolt. Then we'll grab our 1/2" nut and then thread that on. Once we've got one started we can drop down the hitch and rest it while we do the other one. For the front one here, we use the conical tooth washer that fits our 7/16" carriage bolt, then we'll take our nut for the 7/16" and then thread that on. Now we can go ahead and snug everything down. For our 1/2" we're going to use a 19mm socket. For the front one, we're going to use an 18mm socket. Now we can go ahead and torque them down to the manufacturer's specifications and that's found in the instructions. Now we can repeat the same process for the other side. With our hitch installed, let's go ahead and reinstall our exhaust. That's going to complete our look and install of the Draw-Tite Class 2 1-1/4" trailer hitch receiver, Part Number 36521 on our 2011 Subaru Forester.

This is a well built hitch. Installation instructions were straight forward, and I was able to install by myself. However, when I went to put my bike rack into the hitch, I found a very large problem. The 1 1/4" receiver throat is only 4" deep, and ends at the cross bar. My bike rack needed about 1 more inch to match up the holes. Currently not sure what I will end up doing. 556348

I looked into the measurements and the dr. tray part # Y02474 bike rack stinger is 4 1/2 inches long. The hitch part # 36521 from center of hitch pin hole to outside of the bumper is 6 inches. The bike rack stinger does not have enough room to pin into the recessed hitch. The best options are find a bike rack with a longer stinger or use an extender such part # HES6. Please keep in mind, extenders will cut your tongue weight of the hitch in half. Since the tongue weight rating of this hitch is 300 lbs, with the extender your tongue weight will be 150. You have to factor in the weight of the bike rack as well. The dr. Tray part # Y02474 weighs 37 lbs lbs. You will be able to use 113 lbs worth of bikes on your bike rack with the extender. The safest option is choosing a bike rack with a longer stinger such as part # S64686. The Swagman semi 2.0 has 15 1/2 inches between the center of the hitch pin hole and the closest part of the bike rack when folded down. When folded up, the swagman offers 8 inches of clearance. When folded up the bike rack would have 2 inches of space between the bike rack cradles and the bumper on the 2009 Subaru Forester.

With resourcefulness, was able to install this alone, by myself. For a major product, this has been the best experience I have had. Product instructions were concise and clear. The video and advice in it were even better. The blog was also helpful. The hitch installed exactly as expected. For those installing in a used vehicle, lubricate as shown in the video. Also, clean off the hanger rods on mufflers with a wire brush to remove the scale. The blog suggested using soap on the hangers - it helps a lot. Make sure you use safety glasses. I filed the opening rather than drilling and I thought it was easier and safer to do. Last, etrailer has only sent useful emails to me. I dislike having multiple emails advertising stuff I don't need or want. etrailer has only sent useful emails - other firms could learn something from them about how to satisfy on-line customers. Instructions were great. Hardest part was uncoupling the rubber muffler hangers. Might suggest to use a little dish soap to lube the rubber to slide off and on Subaru hanger. Hitch looks nice. Took a while to install the wiring harness (connection was easy). I've had previous issues with insulation on wires rubbing against chassis and wire shorting out, so took time to route wires and anchor carefully. 124350

Install of this trailer hitch went very smoothly. The directions for the installation are good, but watching the video was very helpful. One thing I did different from the directions is I actually unbolted and removed the mufflers from the vehicle instead of lowering the exhaust. I really didn't want the exhaust hanging from just a strap, and removing the mufflers gave great wide open access to the mount points. It may have taken a few more minutes to remove and reinstall the mufflers, but was well worth the effort. One thing to be aware of...the bolts that secure the hitch to the frame are fairly long, so deep well sockets are a must for torquing the bolts to spec. Luckily I had a set in my toolbox. 87610

My friend and I (yes, two GIRLS) were able to install this Drawtite Hitch on my 2013 Subaru Forester. I am glad I watched the video prior to installation-it was EXTREMELY helpful. It took us about 2 hours because we had some difficulty removing and replacing the rubber hangers to lower and then raise the exhaust, but that is just because of the car I have, nothing to do with the hitch itself. We used a dremmel to modify the holes in the frame rather than a drill since neither of us had bits for metal. It worked perfectly. I really like the low profile of this hitch. It is barely noticable and does not change the clearance under the vehicle. This website had better prices than all 3 trailer hitch shops in my town. Delivery took about 5 days-not bad for such a big bulky item! I would definitely recommend both this hitch and etrailer.com to friends and family. 71871

    The only way to know that for sure would be to load the motorcycle into the trailer and check the setups tongue weight. I attached an FAQ article on determining tongue weight for you to check out. Typically, tongue weight is 10-15% of the total weight of trailer.     Yakima does not list the SuperJoe or SuperJoe Pro bike racks for your 2012 Subaru Forester. Another option is to install a trailer hitch such as # 36521 and use a hitch mounted bike rack. This will keep the rack off of the vehicle and a hitch mount bike rack is easier to install in a hitch than a trunk mount rack is to the vehicle. If you go this route I recommend the Swagman XC, # S64650. I've attached a review video to highlight some details for you.

    The only j-style kayak carriers available with the capacity you'd need is the Rhino Rack part # S512 which has a weight capacity of 99 lbs. Only problem is that none of the roof racks we offer for your Forester are going to be rated for the weight of two 85 lb kayaks like yours since they are all limited to 150 lbs.
