Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario. Technical Support

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2017 Honda Odyssey - Draw-Tite

Today on our 2017 Honda Odyssey we'll be having a look at and installing the Draw-Tite Class 2 trailer hitch receiver, part number 36417. Here's what our hitch looks like installed. As you'll see, it tucks up nice and tight against our rear fascia here while giving us the most ground clearance possible without requiring any modification to our fascia. It also sits behind our fascia a little bit so when we're loading cargo into our hatch area, we don't have to worry about knocking our shin against the receiver. On the side of our receiver you'll find our industry-standard 1/2" diameter hitch pin hole to secure any of our hitch-mounted accessories. At the end of our receiver you'll see this welded-on collar which helps improve the strength and give it a more finished appearance.

Welded onto the bottom of the receiver opening are our rolled steel tubular design safety chain loops right here to hook your safety chains from your trailer onto. They're a pretty decent sized opening so you shouldn't have much of a problem, if any, hooking most safety chains onto these. This hitch features a 300 pound max tongue weight rating, which is the amount forcing down, and a 3,500 pound max gross trailer weight rating, which is the amount you can pull. You'll want to consult with the owner's manual of your Odyssey and not exceed the limits of the vehicle or the hitch itself. Now one of my favorite things about this hitch is if you already had 1-1/4" accessories such as bike racks or cargo carriers, things of that nature, from another vehicle, you don't have to worry about buying new ones for your Odyssey. You can use them perfectly with this hitch here. Being a Class 2 hitch, it will also accept Class 1 accessories. Now for a few measurements to better assist you in choosing any hitch-mounted accessory you may need, such as a ball mount, bike rack, or a cargo carrier.

You're looking at about 12" from the ground to the top of the 1-1/4" receiver opening and about 6" from the center of the hitch pin hole to the rearmost part of the back bumper. Now that we've gone over some features, we'll show you how to get it installed. To begin our install we'll need to remove our driver side panel here. We have three plastic push pin fasteners to remove. Right here next to where the subframe comes up we have a 10mm bolt. Then right here we have a Phillips screw that we need to remove.

Now to remove these three plastic push pin fasteners we'll use a flat head screwdriver, come in, pull it out on the center part. Use a trim panel tool, if you have one, to go underneath the big section. Push down and it will pull out. All of our fasteners are exactly the same. With our screw, our bolt, and the three fasteners removed, we can grab the panel and pull it on out.

We'll set it aside. Now right by our tailpipe we have an exhaust hanger right here. We'll spray some lubricant on it. Then we have a second exhaust hanger over here to the side. Spray that one as well too. Then we'll use a pry bar to pry off our exhaust hanger. That will give us enough room to get our hitch into position now. Now we'll spray some lubricant in our weld nuts. We'll use a wire brush which we have available on the website as part number 814092, and run it in and out a couple times. The will help remove any dirt, debris, or rust which may be inside of our threads. We'll make sure we'll do this for all of our attachment points. Now this hitch will be using the rearmost two weld nuts. It's the same on each side of the vehicle. The hardware we'll be using is this bolt here and a conical tooth washer, the same for all four of our attachment points. We'll want to make sure the teeth of the washer will face away from the bolt head and then go up towards the hitch. Now with an extra set of hands we'll raise the hitch on up and secure into place with the hardware. We'll raise our hitch on over our exhaust. We'll pull our exhaust to the side now and tighten down our bolts with our 19mm socket. Now we'll torque our bolts to the amount specified in the instructions. Now I'll raise our exhaust back on up and replace the hanger. That completes our look at and installation of the Draw-Tite Class 2 trailer hitch receiver, part number 36417, on our 2017 Honda Odyssey.

With only 4 bolts, it should be easy to install this hitch, and it is. Look at the video and you will have no difficulty. I drove the back wheels of my Ody up on some 4" high wooden ramps to get sufficient clearance to remove the rubber exhaust hangers. Spraying the rubber hangers with silicon lubricant makes removing them much easier. Since I was working by myself, I used gallon paint cans and some short pieces of 2x4 to get the two ends of the hitch held up just below the frame, so I could start the bolts on each side without having to hold up the hitch while doing it. Note that the instructions which come with the hitch call for an 18mm wrench/socket for tightening the bolts, when the actual wrench/socket required is a 19mm. The hitch looks sturdy and well made, and fits closely under the rear of the Ody. Finally, the personnel at etrailer were very quick to ship the hitch, and I got keeping me informed of the status. I am a very pleased customer, and hightly recommend 8014

This Draw-Tite hitch seems to be of the highest quality. The install would have been simple, however, our Honda Odyssey is 8 years old and it has spent its whole life in Wisconsin exposed to 8 winters. The nuts in the frame rails were very rusty!! It took some major muscle with a heavy duty wire brush designed for the application and a half a can of WD40 to clean the threads enough to thread the supplied bolts. After getting the the bolts threaded I needed a breaker bar on my ratchet to torque the bolts down. To me it seemed as if the supplied bolts could have been half as long. The install with clean threads would be 30 minutes tops. With the task of cleaning the threads it was close to 120 minutes to complete the install. In the end I am happy with the product quality, fit, and the final appearance, and it feels good to have done the job myself! 132237

The hitch receiver was fine and went on easy. It interferes with the bumper a bit, so I cut a notch in the bumper to accomodate it. In the installation video, it says that the underbody trim panel that needs to be removed should not be reinstalled. I do not know why it says that because I reinstalled that piece and it fit just fine with the hitch installed. The wiring was also an easy installation. I did not like the thought of having the wiring hanging into the trunk area, so I cut a hole in the side trim panel so I could feed the wiring into the storage compartment as shown in the picture. 39529

This is the 3rd hitch I purchased from over the last 10 years and it could not have been easier to order and shipped very fast. I have a mechanic buddy who helped me with all 3 installs. It is much easier to have the vehicle on a lift. I had no issues with the install and the instruction videos were perfect. The trailer wiring I did myself with no problems thanks to the detailed video. Over the years I always recommend to anyone that is looking for a hitch. This is the best company to buy a hitch from and you can't beat the prices. I will always recommend etrailer and I will be buying another hitch soon for my wifes new Hyundai Tucson. 46434

Very easy installation. Not easy finding the 1/2" nylon tube brush, wish when buying from etrailer it would show up in the additional items you might need. Came scratched up and not due to shipping, scratches was under rap around cardboard on crossbar. This tells me it was to the packers knowledge this was sent to me this way. A little disturbing since it shows on the Van. Easier not using ramps, less lifting and slid over tail pipe without removing anything. Probably spent 40 min cleaning out one of the weld nuts on van and the rest was a 10 min job. Shipping was fast and tracking was great. 38745

I backed the van up on ramps, cleaned the holes with WD40 and a round brush, slipped the hitch up over the exhaust (no need to remove from the hangers) and installed the bolts and torqued to spec. I think it took me about 10 minutes to do the hitch install. No real need to remove the tailpipe from the hangers, just need to move it to the side to get at the bolts with the ratchet and torque wrench. Very nicely made hitch! I wish I would have known the hitch comes with a rubber plug to keep the crap out, as I ordered one with it. I have 2 of them now. 17918

The fit of the hitch is perfect. But, unless you've just bought a new vehicle, there is no way the installation will take 20-30 minutes. Our Odyssey is 4 years old. The threaded inserts for the hitch bolts were rusty and filled with dirt. It took 20 minutes just to clean them out so the bolts would thread in. Then, each bolt took significant muscle to tighten completely. Now that it's on, it's on for good. It's a great hitch. etrailer shipped quickly (and for free). I am very happy with this purchase. 38062

I put this on an 07 Honda Odyssey and it was beautifully simple. I used the Curt wiring kit also that just plugs into the junction box behind a trim panel also and that was perfect. We just put some grease on the rubber muffler hangers to pop them loose and we were on our way. My friend helped me and we both were shocked when everything was done in less than an hour and we didn't have to go get anything else to make it work the first time. Thanks for selling 2 great products. 146697

Fantastic product. Very easy to install. With the right tools and a little know how I was able to install by myself without any type of lift. It probably did help that car was fairly new as people have told me that once the holes for the mounting bolts get to be a few years old they rust and fill with road crud making it more difficult. Today it still works extremely well for my bike rack. 355496

I purchased this to accommodate a bicycle rack on my Honda Odyssey. For this it works perfectly. Due to the design of the top of the hatch on recent Odysseys, they cannot take a hanging type bike rack. Dealing with etrailer is easy. Delivery was quick. The video instructions on their web site were perfect. Our bikes are happy; I'm happy. ;-) 221183

Easy install on my 2011 Odyssey (Touring Edition). I did need to remove the driver side plastic filler box (3 plastic rivets, 1 hex bolt and 1 Phillips screw). Slipped hitch over exhaust on passenger side then supported driver side. Started bolts on passenger side then on drivers side, then tightened all down to spec. Done in 15 minutes. 19499

2006 Honda Odessy, hitch and lighting, videos were perfect, especially the attention to preparing the nuts on the frame, if you don't spend the time to get them clean be prepared for sore arms and new four letter combos while you try to start those bolts and hold the hitch up. Overall your 3 rated difficulty was right on the mark. 22544

As advertised, the hitch arrived very quickly (within 2 days!). It's high quality material and was simple to install. The installation video e-trailer provides was spot-on. This item is well-made and we recieved it without any issues or problems. We are a family of 4 and needed this for a bike-rack we are getting. With our minivan not have a hitch already this was step one of our solution. We did not mount it ourselves, but had a automotive place do it for us for a nominal fee. 20218

Very easy to install. Already used it to pull a trailer to CT. Only comment I have is once I tightened the 4 bolts the hitch was in contact with the rear bumper and it pushes up on it some. No damage but over time it may chafe on the plastic bumper cover. Otherwise very satisfied with the hitch. 79134

The holes in the hitch didn't line up. Three bolts went together perfect, but one was slightly off. I needed a trip to the hardware store for another bolt. Another thing I was uncertain about was the position of the washers. I assumed the raised ribs faced the hitch. 107406

Ask the Experts about this Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch
Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Visibility of Draw-Tite Class II Hitch on Honda Odyssey
  • The construction and layout of the under body at the rear of the vehicle will have the most influence on how visible the hitch will be. The hitch you were looking at, the Draw-Tite Class II for the 1999-2011 Honda Odyssey is typical of how all of the receiver hitches available for the Odyssey would appear once they are installed. Some people find the round tube hitches to be a bit more pleasing to the eye. The Draw-Tite Class III Receiver Hitch, part # 75270, is an example of a round...

  • Curt or Draw Tite Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2016 Honda Odyssey
  • For your 2016 Honda Odyssey I would recommend the Draw Tite hitch part # 36417 over the Curt hitch part # C12031 because if you were to use a hitch mounted accessory like a bike rack the Draw Tite does not require the use of a stabilizer strap like part # 18050 like the Curt does. Either hitch would have about the same visibility. Some people prefer the look of square tube over round tube, but realistically both will look about the same.

  • Are Support Straps Required on Curt Hitch C12031 if I Dont Exceed Tongue Weight Honda Odyssey 2014
  • If you want a 1-1/4 hitch for your 2014 Honda Odyssey, my personal recommendation would be to go with the Draw-Tite Class II Receiver Hitch, # 36417. This hitch has a 300 pound tongue weight capacity and does not require the use of support straps. Curt only offers the one style of Trailer Hitch Support Straps, # 18050. Curt does require that these straps be used with all non-trailer loads no matter what the weight is. Failure to properly support these loads on the Curt Class II Hitch,...

  • What is a Recommended Hitch for a 2011 Honda Odyssey?
  • The trailer hitch I recommend for lightweight towing on your 2011 Honda Odyssey is the Draw-Tite # 36417. A confirmed fit for your vehicle, it has a tongue weight capacity of 300 lbs and a trailer weight capacity of 3,500 lbs, which is more than enough for you to haul your sailboat. It also offers a simple bolt-on installation, so you can avoid drilling into your Odyssey. • The Class II Draw-Tite hitch # 36417 has a maximum rated towing capacity of 3500-lbs. This rating applies to the hitch itself and the Odyssey could potentially have a lower or higher towing capacity depending on the particular engine, transmission and accessory options installed at the factory. I reviewed an online edition of the owner's manual for the 2011 Odyssey and on page 589 the towing capacities, based on passenger count, are listed. These range from the maximum trailer weight...

A Class I hitch is a light-duty hitch that has the capacity to transport only 2 bikes, even if the bike carrier can hold more than 2. (You might refer to the linked article on hitch classes.) The bike rack you bought, the excellent Thule Apex 4 Bike Carrier # TH9025, will fit your Class I hitch but you cannot transport...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver For 2010 Honda Odyssey
  • On your 2010 Honda Odyssey all the trailer hitch receiver options will be noticeable from the back as even the crosstube is exposed. I recommend the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class II - 1-1/4" # 36417 which is the least noticeable based on size. This is your best option for being discreet. The Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # 75270 will give you more options for accessories and greater strength while being a little more...

  • Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendations for a 2008 Honda Odyssey and 2007 Nissan Sentra
  • The Thule Platform Raceway Trunk Mount Bike Rack, # TH9003PRO, and a host of other trunk mount bike racks will fit the 2007 Nissan Sentra. But, there are no trunk mount bike racks that will fit the 2008 Honda Odyssey because there are not enough safe attachment points on the van for a trunk mount bike rack. Sine you are looking for something that will fit both vehicles, the best option is going to be to equip trailer hitches on both vehicles and use a hitch mount bike rack. Starting...

  • Will 2003 Honda Odyssey Hitch fit 2009 Model
  • I checked with the manufacturer and 90737 has been discontinued and is also not a fit for your 09 Honda Odyssey. The last year that hitch covers is 2004. Hitch # 36417 is the trailer hitch you need because it covers 1999-2009. If you would still like a replacement hardware kit for hitch 90737, you can order by clicking on the part # RHK. The installation instructions for the custom-fit hitches for your vehicle do not mention needing an exhaust hanger, however, they do say to temporarily...

  • Recommendations on a Ball Mount and Lock to Fit a 2011 Honda Odyssey with a 12 inch Hitch Height.
  • You will need two measurements and a little math to determine the correct ball mount for Honda Odyssey. You will need to measure, on level ground, your Honda's hitch height from the top of the receiver hitch opening to the ground. Next, measure from the bottom of your trailer's coupler to the level ground. The difference between these two numbers will determine the rise or drop you will need in your ball mount. I have attached a link that will show in more detail how to choose a correct...

  • Trailer Hitch with Best Ground Clearance and Trailer Wiring for a 2015 Honda Odyssey
  • In terms of ground clearance, the Class II hitches for your 2015 Honda Odyssey will have slightly better clearance than the Class III hitches. From the ground up to the bottom of the receiver it will be approximately 9-1/2 inches. This isn't much but vans sit low to the ground so it is to be expected. As far as the factory hitch It is probably in a comparable position but it is possible that it is slightly higher or lower. For a trailer hitch you can use # 36417. This hitch is rated...

  • Would Class II Hitch for 2007 Honda Odyssey Be Able to Tow Small Trailer
  • The Class II hitches for your 2007 Honda Odyssey like the Draw Tite part # 36417 which is a confirmed fit have a decent towing capacity of 3,500 lbs total trailer weight and 300 lbs tongue weight. If the weight of your trailer is under those figures the hitch would be just fine. You'd also need to check the owners manual of your vehicle to determine the capacities of it as well. Be sure to stay under the lower of the two capacities. For trailer wiring you'd then want the Tekonsha...

  • Will Trailer Hitch From 1999 Honda Odyssey Fit 2003 Honda Odyssey
  • The trailer hitch you have on your 1999 Honda odyssey will indeed fit your 2003. Since the installation hardware is intended for one-time use you will want to order the installation hardware kit for your hitch. You can order the kit by entering part number # RHK and then enter the part number of the hitch you have and select the manufacturer of the hitch from the drop-down box. Then just enter how many kits you want and you are good to go.

  • Hitch and Wiring Recommendations for a 2007 Nissan Altima and a 2005 Honda Odyssey
  • Trailer hitches usually have very specific applications, a hitch from a 2001 Chevy Impala would not also fit on a 2007 Nissan Altima or a 2005 Honda Odyssey. For your 2007 Nissan Altima you would want a Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 24796. I attached installation instructions and an installation video for this product for you to check out also. For trailer wiring you would want a Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring # 118470. Installation instructions and installation video attached. For...
