Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2009 Lincoln Town Car - Draw-Tite

Today on our 2009 Lincoln Town Car, well be installing the Draw-Tite Hitch part number 36116. Heres what our hitch will look like once installed. Next were going to give a couple of measurements to assist you in selecting accessories for your hitch. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper is 7 inches. From the top of the receiver tube to the ground is 14 3/8 inches. This will assist you in selecting accessories such as a bike rack or cargo carrier. Now well go ahead with the installation. Our first step will be removing the underbody panel.

To remove the underbody panel, there are six fasteners well need to remove first. Now with our fasteners removed, well need to remove the panel. It will still be secured by a tab that goes up over the end of a bolt here on the inside of the frame rail. We can simply just push it off the bolt and then bring it down. Next after removing the underbody panel, we need to remove the exhaust hanger here on the passengers side inside the frame rail. The hanger will get removed from the frame rail and reinstalled later using a pre-drilled hole in the hitch. Well spray some lubricant and pry it off the hanger.

Well get an extra set of hands to help hold the hitch in position. Use a pair of vise grips to hold it in place. Now with the clamps holding our hitch in position, were going to go ahead and add a couple of jacks to help secure it to the bottom of the frame before we attempt to drill it out. Now with the clamps and jacks holding it in place, well go ahead and mark each of the attachment points. To do that, were going to use a small pilot bit to go through the frame. Once we drill the attachment points out with the pilot bit, we can leave the hitch in position as a template to drill out the remaining sizes necessary to get the hardware in position. Now with the holes drilled out, were ready to start installing the hardware.

To get our hardware in position, well use the half-inch bolt leader thats supplied with the install kit. Well take the bolt leader tool up through the pre-drilled holes throughout the access hole at the end of the frame through our rear attachment point and the access hole on the bottom of the frame to the forward attachment point. Then well slide on the block and drill on the carriage bolt. Well feed the block into the frame first followed by the carriage bolt and pull them down to the attachment points. Also, through the attachment points, well remove the bolt leaders and install the conical tooth washer in that the teeth of the washer facing the hitch and then a nut. Go ahead and secure it finger-tight.

Now well repeat the same process for our forward attachment point. Now with all installed here on one side, well repeat the same process on the other side. Now were going to remove our clamps and jacks. Then we can tighten the hitch and torqued to the specification as indicated in the instruction. Now with the hitch secured and torqued to specifications, well need to reinstall the exhaust hanger and then the rubberized later on to the hanger. Now with the exhaust hanger reinstalled, well go ahead and reinstall the metal hanger of the steel pipe into the rubberized later. Now with our exhaust hanger reinstalled and secured, this will complete the install of our Draw-Tite Hitch part number 36116 on our 2009 Lincoln Town Car. .

2001 Mercury Grand Marquis

I just finished installing the hitch on my 2001 Mercury Marquis. The final result is outstanding; you can't even tell there is a hitch on it without the draw bar attached. I must say though that it more difficult to install than the instructions indicated. The access holes were so far away from the drilled holes required that the fish wire almost wasn't long enough and kept pulling through before I could get the bolts in the holes. Also I couldn't get the bolts to go through the 1/2" drilled holes with the fish wire and ended up having to drill 5/8" hole to allow access once I adjusted that detail from the instructions it was smooth sailing. If you had the vehicle up on a hoist it would help the installation, but for me I had to do it on my back in the driveway. I finished it all in about 21/2 hours not the 50 minutes stated in the instructions. And it looks great now. I'm sending some pictures, one with the draw bar attached and one without and two where it bolts up to the frame. Thank you again for your very prompt delivery... I was amazed how fast it got here. 36021

2011 Mercury Grand Marquis

All around good product. Installation was complicated by not providing anti rotation plates (for carriage bolts) that fit through the car's frame slots in the forward mounting position also, by providing hex bolts and nuts for the rear mounting position, instead of carriage bolts with anti rotation plates. Wrench access for counter holding the rear mounting bolts inside the frame is extremely limited on the 2011 Grand Marquis. 369610

If you have a lift, a second pair of hands and have rehearsed the install several times, maybe it can be done in 0.5hrs as per the ad. If you're doing it yourself, in your driveway or garage floor, figure 3hrs. The packaging is poorly done. Granted UPS is perhaps the worst company for delivery but the hardware is inside the box in a plastic bag. The hitch worked loose, rips open the cardboard, spills out the hardware. Replacement hardware via eTrailer customer service takes another week. The hitch itself is intended for similar vehicles (Merc Marquis, Ford Crown Vic) and the "Fit" isn't that precise. Would be better if 1" wider. Mounting hardware isn't well thought out. The passenger side exhaust pipe hangs down 2" lower than the drivers side - not much effort went into thinking this through during the design process, looks very much like a shadetree mechanic solution and is the biggest negative. Snaking in the bolts through the frame channels takes enormous patience. It was easier to use an electricians fish tape than the supplied tool. Once installed, it is certainly strong and tucked up well out of site, but the install is definitely ripe for improvements. If I could reset to the start, knowing what I do now, I'd probably try a competitive product from Curt or Hidden Hitch. Maybe it would be better, Maybe not. 229649

1999 Honda Pilot

I installed the hitch myself. I fortunately had a couple of ramps to back my 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis up on which raised the rear end up to approx. 25 inches off the cement floor. I then used a rolling hydraulic floor jack to somewhat get the hitch in place. I then blocked up the hitch on each end with 25 inch long 2X4,s. This helped get the hitch in a proper position flush against the vehicles chassis so I could begin drilling my holes. I used a Uni-Bit to drill a pilot hole in each of the 4 places needed. I pretty much had to do this on my back. Once I had my pilot holes drilled,I dropped the hitch and finished drilling the 4 holes to about 3/4 inch.(makes fishing the required bolts easier to enter the hole) Be aware that when you fish those 2 carriage bolts,( the ones with the mushroom heads)you also need to fish in the 2- 1/4 by 2 inch flat metal pieces provided at the same time. ( these are the 2 bolts and plates that go in the closest to the front of the car on each side of the chassis). I actually inserted the carriage bolts into the provided metal piece, then taped the head of the bolt to the metal piece in order to make both pieces fish together through the cars access holes. Saved me a lot of hassle as the holes you drill may be off center to the chassis. All in all took me about 2-3 hours to do the job myself. I would recommend you have someone help you out if you do not have a hydraulic floor jack to hold the hitch in position in order to mark/drill the mounting holes. 138026

It was very clear the part that was delivered to me was a 'return' based on the re-taped packaging and parts. Not sure where the part had been first, I'm just glad all the parts were still there when I got it. This was not you finest work. This is the third hitch I have purchased from you and the other two were perfect. Not sure what happened this time. 100022

2003 Mercury Marauder

I purchased a Class II hitch for use on my show car 2003 Mercury Marauder in Silver Burch, I need something to pull my utility trailer occasionally. I was afraid that the receiver would take away from the car, but it can barely be seen. The main structure is completely hidden. Installation was simple, but took a little longer than expected without a lift and working by myself with the car on ramps. I am very pleased with the quality and outcome of the install. 89952

Your owners manual will give you the towing capacity of your vehicle. The hitch receiver, like # 36116 has a higher capacity rating, but you will be limited to the manufacturer's specs. The hitch although rated for more, does not increase your vehicle's rating. In towing, the weakest rating of any of your parts is the one that is your maximum rating of all your parts. In this case, your limit will be 2000 lbs max towing capacity.

  • Ball Mount Recommendation for Draw Tite Hitch for a 1996 Lincoln Town Car
The hitch part # 36116 is a Class II hitch that has the part # 36063 as the recommended ball mount which has a 3-1/8 inch rise. If there was a Class II hitch compatible ball mount that had a 3-1/4 inch rise available you could use it, but we do not carry one. That being said, the difference between the two sizes would not be hardly noticeable so the 3-1/8 should work just fine. For a 2 inch ball you would need part # 19258, or for a 1-7/8 inch ball part # 19257.
