Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2015 Fiat 500 - Draw-Tite

Today on our 2015 Fiat 500, we'll be installing the Draw-Tite Sportframe trailer hitch receiver, Class I with 1-1/4in opening, part number 24873. AS you see, this is what our hitch looks like installed on our vehicle. It is the Class I hitch with 1-1/4in opening, so you're going to be limited to smaller accessories such as a two bike carrier, or a small cargo carrier with a 1-1/4in shank. It does feature a 1/2in pinhole for your pin and clip, easy access to your tie-down loops to secure straps around your bikes, or whatever else, or your small trailer if you do have a small cargo trailer. You are limited to a two hundred pound tongue weight and a two thousand pound towing capacity. We want to check your manufacturer's specs so you can see what the towing capacity is for your vehicle.

It has a nice powder coated finish with fully welded seems, and a nice feature about this particular hitch is the crossbar is tucked up underneath the rear fascia. The only thing that sticks out here is the receiver tube of the hitch. I'll go ahead and give you some measurements and help you choose some accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch pinhole to the edge of the bumper is 2in, and from the top of the receiver tube to the ground is 10-1/2in. That'll help you choose an accessory such as a ball mount, bicycle rack, or cargo carrier. Now I'll go ahead and show you how the hitch is installed. Now, this is the option to go ahead and remove your spare tire to give you a little more working room.

Really you can go ahead and install the hitch with the spare tire in place. That just gives you one less step you have to do when installing your hitch. Now we're going to go ahead and lower the exhaust on the driver side. There's one hanger here right above the end of the muffler. We'll go ahead and take some spray lubricant and spray the hanger down. That'll help ease and get it off the hanger.

Go ahead push, pry, or pull the hanger off to remove it to lower the muffler. So, if you need to get access here to the exhaust hanger, just go ahead and just take this heat shield back, pull back a little bit, and you get access to it. Go ahead and get that hanger loose. Now we'll go over here to the outside of the muffler and get this other one loose and we can go ahead and lower the exhaust a little bit. G ahead and pry this hanger off, and the exhaust will lower down and rest on the rear cross member. Next we need to go ahead and remove these two 8mm bolts here that hold the fascia here to this bracket to allow us to pull it back to get our hitch into position, then we'll go ahead and reinstall those once the hitch is up. So, you see that'll give us some working room when we're getting our hitch up into position.

Go ahead and set these two screws aside, as we will be reinstalling them. Next here on the passenger side frame, you see this rubber square plug We need go ahead and pull that down, so just take a flat blade screw driver, pop that out of the way, and that'll give us access to the inside of our frame to put our carriage bolt and block that come with the kit through this hole. Also, right there in front of it, there's a little piece of metal tape. Go ahead and peel that back. That'll expose the well nut that we also will be using to install our hitch. Now we'll go ahead and take our 1/2in fish wire that comes with our kit, feed it up through the hole here that the hardware will come out of, and then out of our access hole. Then go ahead and take our square hole spacer block, feed that over our fish wire, and then thread it on our 1/2in bolt. Go ahead and feed our block into position, feed our bolt up in there, and there is some underpinning in there, so it is a little snug, so we can go ahead and get our bolt fed down into position. Take our pull wire off. Next we need to go ahead and bring our plate that comes with our kit, there's one for each side, and it'll get mounted above here on the bumper bracket, and that'll supply two of the mounting locations for our hitch. Those come with these long carriage bolts, so feed one into each of those mounting locations, and then you are going to go ahead and feed it up over the bumper structure right here. You just want to make sure the orientation to match it up with you hitch. The inside hole with be towards the front of the vehicle. The outside one will be towards the rear, so you go ahead and feed that up over, and you can see they're hanging down here. Our hitch will go up and mount to these two locations using a conical toothed washer and a hex nut. Now go ahead repeat the same process here on the driver side. Just take our plate and our carriage bolt, feed them up. Now here for our weld nut on the passenger side, we'll be using the small head hex bolt, and the smaller conical toothed washer that comes with the kit. That'll go through the hitch and into he weld nut. Now I'll go ahead and get an extra set of hands to help us lift our hitch up into position so we can go ahead and install our hardware. Now keep in mind here when you're putting your hitch up into position, you will have to pry back here on the plastic a little bit. Just be gentle with it so you don't snap these tabs off when you're putting your hitch up into position. So, we'll go ahead and get our extra set of hands and feed our hitch up, pulling back on our fascia to get it fed up into position. So, we'll take our small bolt and conical toothed washer that goes to our weld nut. Go ahead and put our bolt and smaller conical toothed washer here through our weld nut. Go ahead and get our other conical toothed washer and hex nut and screw it onto our carriage bolt here in the frame. So, we'll go ahead and get that threaded in there, then we'll go ahead and get our long carriage bolts that are through our plate here on the passenger side and through our hitch and install our conical toothed washer and nuts on those. We'll go ahead and get that one threaded in there, and then we'll go ahead this inside one. It's kind of hard to see up there. We just have to guide the bolt down through the hole in the hitch and get your hardware installed. For these outside ones, if the hitch is hanging down a little bit, go ahead and put some pressure on the center of your hitch. That'll help push it up and you can get your conical toothed washer and nut on that bolt. Now that I have everything loosely installed by hand, we'll go ahead and tighten it down, and then torque it to specifications as indicated in the instructions. Now that we have those tightened down, we'll go ahead and go to our smaller hex bolt here on the passenger side. Go ahead and take a 13mm socket to secure this bolt. We'll go ahead and repeat the process of torquing those carriage bolts on the driver side. Now with our hitch tightened and torqued down, we can go ahead and reinstall the exhaust. Again, go ahead and grab some spray lubricant. Make it a little bit easier to install your exhaust back into position. Now go ahead and take our outside exhaust hanger. Now our exhaust is back into position. Now all that's left is to reinstall the 8mm bolts we removed here on the fascia to hold that secure again. Start with my hand first, and then we can go ahead and snug them down with our socket. And these are going into a plastic fastener, so you don't have to get them real tight. Just get them snug and it'll hold your fascia in place. Now with everything installed, we're ready to hit the road. That'll do it for he Draw-Tite Sportframe trailer hitch receiver, Class I with 1-1/4 opening, part number 24873 on our 2015 Fiat 500. .

2012 Fiat 500 Plenty of videos and adequate paper instruction. Took me 2.5 hrs. As is typical for me it was 1.5 looking for tools and 1 hour for install. Note that this hitch is truly for a bike rack or similar very light duty not to really haul anything. For tongue weight its well supported with the bumper supports for tongue weitht vertical loading However there is only 2 bolts holding the hitch from front to back (towing) load with the friction of bumper support bolts/plates additional adjunts in this towing direction. I'd be uncomfortable towing anything but for the intended bike rack, its great. Thanks 236654

Let me just say, the product fit as described, and once installed looks good. Installation was straight forward and the hardest part was getting the muffler brackets off to lower the muffler. The only problem I had was instead of packing 5 1/2-13 nuts and 5 1/2 washers the manufacture packed 5 extra 1/2 x 2" carriage bolts which didn't go anywhere. A quick trip to the hardware store and I was back in business. I don't intend to tow anything but this will allow me to take our bikes along when we travel. 425105

Their product was awesome. It installed correctly quickly and efficiently fantastic product. What I like about this product is that it was simple and yet quality, I explained to use this hitch to tow a small cargo trailer for my farmers market supplies .The biggest problem that this hitch songs is a space issue I couldn’t fit it all in my little car says this is a great solution and so simple thank you guys 469200

The hitch went on with just one kink. On the right tab that extends forward, the smaller hole for the bolt to the pre-threaded hole on the frame, needs to be oversized by 0.125" Diameter. The large bolt (the one you feed with the fish wire) fit perfectly but the smaller bolt was 1/16" off center and the hold had to be widened. No amount of twisting and repositioning would get it to line up, but the big bolt was perfectly centered. Aside from that it bolted up nice and tight. Here is a picture with the #63120 bike rack I also ordered from etrailer. And finally, my hat is off to your shipping people. They did a masterful job of getting both the hitch and the bike rack securely in the carton. Fantastic and creative packing! 321957

Poor Tolerances = Impossible Proper Installation. Unfortunately, the trailer hitch receiver was manufactured with the square crossmember extending across the outermost driver-side mounting plate in such a way that precluded the use of a washer on the mounting hole (photo attached). (This alone is worth returning the trailer hitch receiver) To test fit, I omitted the washer and used the bolt alone. It had enough clearance to turn, but was tight with the socket wrench. I then found that the body attachment bolts at the bumper support, extend rearward and interfere with the carriage bolts (photo attached). I ground off the excess portion of the body attachment bolt to accommodate for the carriage bolt. With the two brackets snug on the bumper support, I found that the forward attachment arm was 1" below the frame of the vehicle (photo). Lastly, the product arrived with chips in the paint and in generally not with that 'shiny new' look. This didn't upset me as much as it surprised me. Happily, there were no etrailer or Draw-Tite stickers. Contacted support to get replacement trailer hitch receiver that will accommodate the washer on the outermost driverside mounting bracket. Hopefully, the other tolerance issues will resolve themselves as well and maybe, just for fun, the replacement will have that 'new and shiny' look. 512132

This trailer hitch fits my 2015 Fiat 500e perfectly without any needs to drill additional holes. It took about 45 minutes to install if you are handy. The Fiat 500e is not designed to tow anything so the trailer hitch is really to hold my bike rack since it's designed to latch on to the left/right bumber brackets and to the right side of uni-body above the spare tire mount. If the hitch is re-designed to attach to both side of the uni-body, then I would consider towing a very lite weight trailer but I will not with the current design. It'd helped to watch the eTrailer installation video to a 2012 Fiat 500, on YouTube. The 500e does not have a spare-tire mount nor a muffler so it is easier to install since you would skip those steps. I had search the internet for an inexpensive trailer hitch and I am glad some dude recommended this particular hitch for the 500e and it fits! The best part of this whole installation is that you can remove the hitch and return the vehicle to the original configuration. 167461

I purchased the Draw-Tite Sportframe trailer hitch receiver from etrailer with hopes that their description of the ease of installing it were accurate. I am happy to report the description was dead on. The hitch went on easily, and the video helped. It is solid, no rattles, and a good fit. You barely notice the hitch is there. I plan on using the receiver to attach a rod rack to my Fiat to save wear and tear on my truck. Once i get the rack I'll be all set to hit my fishing spots incognito. 145965

The hitch has lived up to its description. After a year and now having my rod rack installed I have to say I am extremely satisfied with the hitch and its performance.

Great hitch for my 2012 Fiat 500 Sport!! Installation is not hard if you can get under your car or have some lifts for it. Looks very minimal and slick so yeah recomend it 100% for anyone looking one for their Fiat 642776

Ordered my hitch on Thursday and received it the following Tuesday. Great service and packaged very well. I don't have a lift and had to work off jack stands and by myself, but got the hitch on in about 1 hour. This hitch is for a 2017 Fiat 500c. Fits great and looks good. A Fiat 500 is not supposed to be used for towing a trailer, per Fiat, but my purpose is for a rack for my recumbent trike. Since I am writing this review prior to getting the rack, I cannot tell you how well it will work, but I see no problems. Thank you Draw-Tite and etrailer for an awesome product. 611373

Etrailer.com is the absolute best when it comes to one-stop shopping. I am getting ready to install my 7th hitch from Etrailer. com. The videos are an absolute must if you are a DIY person like me. You can get a really good idea if a job is bigger than what you have the tools for. They are there to help you tackle any hitch. This is my first hitch-mounted bike rack for my very tiny Fiat 500. I can't wait to get into it over the holiday weekend. Thanks for providing the best products, super-speedy shipping and wonderful packaging. Everything is always perfect with Etrailer.com! 559609

Product came on time and was well made. All hardware was included. I had to do quite a bit of edge grinding to make the hitch lay flat on the bottom of the bumper support on the passenger side. This could have been caused by variations in body panel fit on my particular Fiat 500. All in all I would recommend this hitch to others with Fiats. 504379

Easy install. Had good instructions. If you don't do any maintenance yourself, you might have a different opinion. We use it a lot. Mounted it on our FIAT 500e, and use it to haul two bikes on a double rack. The receiver has held its shape. Great little hitch. 482126

Still have the car and the hitch. Still a solid product and purchase. Lowering my FIAT this summer. It fits closely under the rear damn but I have concern that it might drag in certain situations. Not a fault of the hitch or its design. . . . and it may not drag. Only time will tell.

Fairly easy to install. Great service and follow up by etrailer. One word of advice is allow extra time to pop off the rubber mount on the exhaust pipe. Use lots of WD40 on the prongs. I'll be using the hitch to mount my bike rack on my Fiat 500. 311372

I wanted to write a review that said it was very easy to put on, but it is not that easy. Not terribly hard but not easy. I managed to do it alone in about an hour and a half after making a few mistakes. The muffler hangers are almost the hardest part!... And, getting the bolt and plate fished into the frame is a puzzle. But, I like puzzles and after a few minutes I had that figured out. Big tip.... Try the bolt in the weld nut on your frame before trying to install the hitch. If the weld nut is coated with rust prevention like mine was you might want to chase the threads with a tap before hanging the hitch. I was able to clear the threads using the bolt by advancing it slowly then backing it out repeatedly. However, doing that while wrestling the hitch into place is not the way to go. Also, at least on my car there was a bolt on the drivers side bumper bracket that was right in the way of one of the carriage bolts the first time I tried to install it. After loosing all the bolts again and wrestling the hitch a little back, I was able to just clear that bolt. My Fiat is a 2015 so I am not sure if that bolt placement has changed or I just got unlucky in where the hitch wanted to sit. No comment yet on the durability or suitability of the hitch for any specific purpose as I have not tried to use it yet. But, the installation is doable if kinda difficult. 212348

Close quarters, and variances in (hitch) construction the likely factors. I was able to successfully install it ,but only after several attempts and significant 'tweeking' of the passenger side 'leg'. The 'hidden' feature is accomplished via the 'dropped design' which I do prefer, however,I feel that attaching the hitch by way of 'clamping' it over the collapsible bumper supports versus the 'traditional bolt to frame' method is weaker, and may hamper the collapsing function of the bumper mounts in the event of a collision.... All of that said,I have no regrets(at least not at this time) about selecting this hitch for my purpose. 183213

2012 Fiat 500

Not as easy on my '12 Sport as the video shows. Took several hours to install. First of all the video doesn't show snaking the smaller carriage bolt through the hole with the rubber plug. You screw the bolt on to a spring wound in the end of fish wire. That worked brilliantly but low and behold the bolt was too long by three threads to "go around the corner" and had to be cut. Also there is a rectangular plate that goes in the hole too. The factory instructions makes it sound like you do the bolt and the plate at the same time. Forget that, just stick the plate in the whole and push it over. When I tightened the main bolts, this little forward sub-bracket was a good 3/8" below the body, and this is with the tire lifter in place. Required shimming with washers and getting a longer machine bolt for the rear hole. The muffler hanger rubbers are a real pain to get off. I would recommend you take off the rear driver side tire to access the outer one. Also the aluminum muffler shield is in the way a bit but that can bent easily. Just remember to bend it back or the spare tire will not go up. The biggest problem was that there was an interference with the two long inboard carriage bolts and two bolts that hold the bumper to the frame. Right where they come down from the upper clamp plate and try to go through the hole on the main hitch these two bolt prevented me from lining everything up. Out came the sawzall and cut the tips of the bolts off right next to the nut. Also on my car, the hitch wouldn't lift straight up to contact the frame. You kind of have to roll it in to clear a tiny lip on the bumper. Once all done, the hitch is great. Very very solid and good looking under the bumper. Might even paint it the color of the Fiat to make it totally stealthy. Hope this helps someone. 181763

Product arrived quickly. Took it to be installed, which took about an hour, and the hitch works great on my Fiat 500e. Great doing business with etrailer.com! 160291

The hitch is installed but not yet used. The installation process is (of course) not as easy as the video demo shows. It takes 2 or rather 3 people. Especially the threading of the small bolt with the wire is very tricky. Also the lowering of the muffler is far from easy. It took us more than 2 hours to install. 154547

Ask the Experts about this Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch
Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Comparing Curt and Draw-Tite Trailer Hitches for a 2012 Fiat 500
  • It really depends on what you want to do with the hitch on your 2012 Fiat 500. If you will be using the hitch for a bike rack or cargo carrier then I recommend the Draw-Tite hitch # 24873. The reason is that Curt will require the use of a stabilization strap, # 18050, when using hitch # C11363 for anything other than a trailer per their warranty requirements. Draw-Tite does not have that requirement. If you will be doing some towing (check your owner's manual first because the online...

  • Cargo Carrier, Hitch and Net Recommendation for a 2012 Fiat 500 Pop
  • For a trailer hitch to use a cargo carrier with your 2012 Fiat 500 Pop you would want the Draw Tite part # 24873. Then for a hitch cargo carrier the lightest weight option is the Curt part # C18145 which you referenced that weighs 29 lbs. For a net the part # C18200 is the best fitting one that would work well. Check out the review video I attached as well.

  • Choosing Between Hitch Mount or Trunk Mounted Bike Rack for 2012 Fiat 500
  • Purely by nature of the way it attaches to the vehicle, a hitch mounted rack would be the most secure. The rack's shank is secured to the receiver tube of the hitch, held in place by a steel hitch pin. The hitch is bolted to the undercarriage of the vehicle for an extremely strong installation. If you wanted to go the hitch route, I'd recommend the Draw-Tite Class I hitch, part # 24873 (for non-Abarth models). If you have an Abarth model, use # C11347. For a 2 bike hitch mounted rack, you...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for 2015 Fiat 500
  • You are correct, both the Draw-Tite Class I Sport Frame Receiver Hitch # 24873 and the Curt Class I Receiver Hitch # C11363 are confirmed to fit your 2015 Fiat 500. Between these two models, I definitely recommend going with the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver # 24873. This is a fully welded, corrosion-resistant Class I hitch that will use existing holes in your Fiat's frame for a no-drill installation. The installation process itself will be slightly easier when compared...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2017 Fiat 500e
  • For your 2017 Fiat 500e the Draw Tite hitch part # 24873 would be your best option. For carrying a bike rack it does not require a stabilizer strap like the Curt does and it does have the capacity for very light towing. For this light duty vehicle there are only 1-1/4 inch hitches available since this is a light duty vehicle. For trailer wiring you'd then want the part # 118546 which is a confirmed fit. For a ball mount you'd want the part # 3593 and for a ball part # 19256.

  • The Draw Tite hitch part # 24873 is a confirmed fit for your 2017 Fiat 500 and would work well for you. • Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 2012 Fiat 500 to Tow a 350 Pound Pontoon Boat and Trailer
  • All of the trailer hitches that fit the 2012 Fiat 500, including # 24873, are rated for up to 2,000 pounds gross trailer weight. So a trailer that weighs 350 pounds total would be no problem for the hitch. Consult the Fiat owners manual though to determine if it has a towing capacity and, if it does, what that capacity is. Always go by the lowest rating. The tongue weight capacities listed for the hitches is the amount of weight pushing straight down on the hitch that it can handle....

  • Bike Carrier Recommendation for a 2015 Fiat 500E
  • Anything, including the most protective trunk mount carriers, have the potential to mar or scratch vehicle paint. The way to limit this from happening is to make sure the bike carrier and the vehicle are clean where they come into contact with each other. A coat of wax on the vehicle will offer even more protection. Another option that will keep the bikes off of your leased 2015 Fiat 500E is to install a trailer hitch and use a hitch mount bike carrier. this is the safest way to carry...

  • Can Trailer Hitch be Installed on 2014 Fiat 500 with Spare Tire Option
  • If your 2014 Fiat 500 has the spare tire option you will only need to temporarily lower the tire to install Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 24873, which you referenced. If you plan on doing some towing, you will also need a ball mount, hitch ball, and wiring. For a ball mount # 3593 you can use the 1-7/8 inch diameter ball # 19256 or the 2 inch diameter ball # 19258. For trailer wiring, use # 118546.
