Specs:
Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.
Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.
In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video of Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class I - 1-1/4"
Videos are provided as a guide only. Refer to manufacturer installation instructions and specs for complete information.
Today on our 2009 Volkswagen Beetle, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Drawtite Sport Frame Trailer Hitch, Receiver Class 1, part number 24679. You'll see our hitch installed, you can see it's got a nice black powder coated finish, with a large flat stock bar design. It's a 1-1/4" class 1 hitch. It's got a nice round style safety chain loop, it's going to allow you to put a large hook in there. This hitch is going to allow you to have 200 pounds of tone weight, which is the amount of down force, and 2,000 pounds of trailer towing weight, which is how much it's pulling on your hitch. Then you want to check with your manufacturer to make sure your vehicle's designed to pull that kind of weight. It's a bolt on design.
It's going to require you to drill 2 holes in the bottom of your trunk well. You're going to place some blocks and carriage bolts through those holes. Then it uses your factory tow hook on this side, and it's going to use your exhaust hanger bolt on the driver's side. This will be ideal if you have a golf club carrier that's going to fit in the back of your car, cargo carrier, maybe a bike rack. Anything that uses a class 1 1-1/4" design.
Now I'll go ahead and give you some measurements. It's going to help you in choosing your accessories such as bike carriers or cargo carriers from the ground to the inside of the top of the tube is going to be about 9", and from the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost part of the bumper is going to be about 6". Now let's go ahead and show you how to install it. The first thing we're going to need to do on our install is to remove our spare tire from the well down below so we can drill some holes to mount our hitch. We'll grab our handy dandy strap, and we can remove our tire. The first thing we're going to do is we're going to take out our 2 bolts on our rear exhaust hanger, take out these 2 13mm bolts.
One here, one on this side, then we can drop our exhaust down a little bit, and we're going to have to modify our heat shield. Now we're not going to be reusing those 2 bolts. Our kit comes with some new ones that are going to be a little bit longer to mount our hitch to the side. Now we'll just take a pair of tin snips. We can cut this back a little bit, and do the same on this side.
Just a little notch. Then we're going to take a hammer and we're going to pound it up so we have some clearance for our new hitch. Now we've figured out on our vehicle that this is really close and it does not push up enough, so we're going to take a hole saw and cut a nice round hole here so we have some place to push our bolt up through to drop it into our hitch. That'll give you a nice round hole, and we can clean that up with a razor knife. We're going to get a second set of hands. We'll slide our hitch back into position, and we can slide our bolt up into the hole. We'll take our large block, it's going to go across the entire span of the bottom of our tow hook. Our split lock washer and our nut, and we'll install it on. Then we're going to take our new 8mm bolt, a split lock washer, and 2 flat washers. We're going to place them into our socket, then we'll put a piece of paper towel in there to help hold our bolt from falling out as we're working it into position. Once we have them started, then we can run them down, just line them up against the bottom of the body. Now we're going to take our 1/2" drill bit, now that this is placed up against the bottom of the vehicle. Go ahead and drill out our hole. We'll repeat that process for this side as well. We're going to go ahead and take a little bit of silicone, put it around the base before we drop our carriage bolt and block through the hole. We're going to use some Locktite available at our website, part number LT37467. We'll take our bolt and block. Slip it into position, same thing on the other side. Now once we're on the bottom side, we're going to take another split lock washer, slide it on. We'll take our 1/2" nut and do the same on the other side. We'll take our 3/4" socket, snug these down. Then we're going to go ahead and torque our 1/2" bolts down to the specification listed in your instructions. Now as you're torquing this thing, we want to make sure that the block stays parallel to the hitch. We can torque our last 2. Then we'll take our tire and we'll reinstall it back in our car. We'll put our jack accessories back into place. That's going to do it for our look at and install of the Drawtite Sport Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver, Class 1, part number 24679 on our 2009 Volkswagen Beetle.

I bought this hitch for my 2001 VW Golf. The shipping was fast and cheap, (especially considering the size of the package) and the hitch showed up at my front door a few days after ordering, well-packed and undamaged. The install process was relatively straightforward, but I would say almost impossible without a second person to help hold the hitch in place while the bolts are attached. I ended up calling a friend and using the scissor jack out of the trunk of my car to hold the hitch in place while I bolted it in. I did run into a minor problem with a clearance issue between the rear valence on the car and the receiver portion of the hitch, but I rectified it by making a small cut-out in the plastic of the bumper with my pocketknife. Since the hitch is a permanent addition, I wasn't too concerned about making this alteration- you can't see it unless you look under the bumper, regardless. The package shipped with all the necessary hardware, and even included a hardcopy of the mounting instructions. As others have said, eye protection is key for this job, because you're going to have rust and road grit raining down on you while you try to move the hitch into position, and most of it is stuff you don't want in your eyes. In terms of actual towing, the hitch worked exactly as expected. I towed a uhaul trailer about 400 miles with absolutely no problems. It easily passed a safety inspection, and provided completely trouble-free operation. For the price and ease of install, this product can't really be beat! 23689

If installing yourself: you will need a 1/2" drill bit/drill, a jack to hold up the muffler, a face shield or at least good safety glasses (a lot of debris will fall on your head), silicone sealant (for the bolts that mount in the spare tire well), ramps (to safely raise the car), and third or fourth hand will make the initial mounting easier (instead of trying to hold the heavy hitch with two knees). The hitch itself is solid and well designed. The issue I have is with the surprise mounting instructions that the right hand mount needs to be permanently bolted to the car's tow eye. This tow eye can no longer be used in the event the car needs to be pulled onto a flatbed tow truck (I have had to use it before). The other issue is after mounting, I noticed that the hitch in not perfectly straight. I took for granted that the left hand mount that is between the exhaust bracket would align the hitch since it has two bolts with not a lot of play. Before tightening everything down, try looking at the hitch to see if it plumb. If it's off a little bit, I think it isn't a big deal since a hitch ball is used and that will negate the not 100% perpendicular hitch - though the forces on the hitch may not be the same... 404604

I'm glad my colleague convinced me to order a hitch from etrailer. The install went smoothly and my wife couldn't be happier with the hitch on her VW Beetle, now she gets to cart around her bike whenever she wants. I did benefit from reading other reviews and ended up using both a jack and a basketball/block of wood to prop up the hitch during the install (a second set of hands would have done the same thing). I also benefitted from owning a set of ramps to prop the back end of the car up, you can do it without but the added space was a huge help. Don't forget to order the "bolt leader" to thread through the 1/2" carriage bolt but you can also fish it through with a thin piece of wire. Overall the install was really easy and could be done by just about anyone. 150749

I received the hitch a day early and it was easy to track from the website and\or email I received. The staff was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. I watched a short video and installed the hitch without any problem. I however should have ordered the ball mount at the same time to avoid shipping. I am happy with my purchase and will order other hitches for my other vehicles. 179424

I bought a hitch from etrailer so I could install a bike rack on my 06 beetle. The order was quickly filled and all parts were included. Instructions were clear and the videos on the website made installation a breeze. Everything fit exactly as it was supposed to. Here is a pic of the hitch in action. It was a pleasure doing business with you guys......... 140548

I ordered this hitch and cannot believe how fast it arrived. I had Uhaul install it for me without any problems. I ordred from you guys because Uhaul said that it would take them up to 10 days to get it. My order arrived in four days and dropped on my front proch in perfect condition. I have since gone on their web site to find a bike rack and am really impressed with all the information that is available including videos. What a great site - puts all the rest to shame. Good prices as well. 7121

Thanks for a great product. The included paper directions were adequate - it was actually the video your website provides that helped me the most. The hitch arrived in great shape and in a timely manner. I will use and recommend your company whenever applicable. Thanks 377157

I had to bend the verticle bracket so it would fit between the spare tire well and heat shroud bracket. I was not able to install the 1/2 inch square spacer but used washers to shim the space which was less than 1/2 inch. Overall, installation turned out pretty good. True, installation should take only 30-40 minutes but I had alignment problems from the start. Bending the verticle bracket corrected all problems. Next, I'll see how easy the wiring installation goes. 16457

Installed on 2008 beetle convertible. Fit is perfect. Would highly recommend this product. I would recommend buying a 1/2 inch longer bolt for the right side, back bolt. It just makes it easier to get into place and doesn't hit anything when installed. Don't use any longer bolt in the other nut. (the one towards the front of the car) When installing the shim, it is a tight fit, use a flat bar and crowbar to get it into place. Makes a nice tight installation. 126066

Installation completed with very simple, well written instructiions. Fits my VW New Beetle perfectly. Let's my wife.pull our boat to a nearby lake following the camper. Thank you eTrailer for your expert, very helpful sales person. I have to mention Kimberly. Tks. 122544

We have to use a hitch to mount a bike rack, which my wife uses also as a wheelchair carrier for her work. The hitch fit where it said, and installation wasn't too difficult. (Wear safety glasses! You will get a lot of sand and/or dirt in your eyes without them.) Our tow hook was more of a circle than the loop shown on the instructions. Taking out the passenger side back-up light during installation made getting the bolt in possible. 5899

The trailer hitch is solidly built an fairly straightforward to install even on your own. However having an extra set hands to hold hitch in place will help. The exhaust tip does rub against the hitch while car is running an creates a lil extra noise but a couple of zip ties should move exhaust that extra half inch to eliminate that. Otherwise great product. 2003 VW GTI 103373
Hitch and exhaust contact does happen from time to time, but it is an easy fix. Zip ties probably will not cut it. They will either break or melt. Take a long, heavy pair of channel locks and bend the exhaust hangers in the area to get the tip away from the hitch, or you can swap out the rubber isolator for a different length to get the tip away.

Highly recomend this hitch Installation was a bit tricky due to the V.W. exhaust system. Hardware used to support the heat shield difficult to remove and reuse. Suggest purchase of new hardware prior to installation. The hitch and mounting hardware was great to work with. Installation was a snap. Very satisfied with reliability and LOOKS GREAT. 1162

We got this hitch so we could use our bicycle rack on a VW Beetle. My wife was concerned that it would be too visible and ruin the "cuteness" of her car, but as stated on the etrailer website, it is unobtrusive. It installed fairly easily, and works great. Service from etrailer was very good, as was the accuracy of their information. 329566

Installed very easily on my 2003 New Beetle. All the mounting points lined up, all the necessary hardware was there including longer bolts where it attached to the frame in existing threaded mounting position of the exhaust system. Drilled two holes only. Seems to be a very rugged assembly. Very satisfied. 20626

I really enjoy the trailer hitch. It was easy to install and has worked beautifully. I have hauled everything from trailers full of fire wood to furniture. It's a great product at an even better price. I would highly recommend it to anyone considering installing a trailer hitch. 240223

The draw-tite frame is made of very sturdy metal. I was impressed with how well it mated with the car and it installed in under an hour. Very satisfied and I will order from etrailer again since it came UPS in less that two days after I ordered it. Great buy! Thank you! 51884

I have had this hitch for several years and have towed a trailer very easily. IT SAVED MY CAR WHEN I GOT REAR ENDED! It was a fairly slow crash and bent up the hitch but only tiny paint transfer on my car. As a hatchback I think I would have bean totaled otherwise. 37673
by: Scott B.04/27/2012
The hitch i ordered was delivered very fast and the video i viewed to install it on my vehicle made it very easy to install. It fit perfectly and only took about a half hour to install. I am very pleased and strongly recommend etrailer to others!!!!! 38649

The best hitch for my Golf ...wins hands down. Mounting system is far superior to other brands; the weight and quality of the steel is exceptional; the weld quality is excellent; and the mounting process is straightforward. Couldn't be happier 411978

The trailer hitch was easy to install on my 2006 VW Beetle. In fact, it took me almost as much time to get the spare tire back in the trunk as it did to instal the hitch. 38715

Installation went very well. Relatively easy. Hitch looks well built. The two additional bolts which are located in the spare tire well add structural rigidity. 20621
