Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2014 Dodge Ram 2500 - Curt

Speaker: Today on our 2014 Dodge Ram Pick-Up 2500 Series we'll be installing the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver Part No. C15809. Here's what our hitch looks like installed in our vehicle. We'll go ahead and give you a couple of measurements in helping you choose some accessories for your hitch, such as a ball mount, a bicycle rack or a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pinhole to the outermost edge of the bumper is approximately 3 1/2", from the top of the opening in the receiver to the ground is approximately 21". Now let's go ahead an install our hitch. Let's go ahead and first begin by pointing out the attachment points that we'll be using to mount our hitch. There's a total of 6 attachment points, 3 on each side. For the two forward most locations, one on each side we'll be using the 3" long square hole spacer blocks with a 9/16 carriage bolts and a 9/16 flange nut. We'll go ahead and use the fish wire provided with the kit.

The fish wire are hardwired in the foremost location. We'll go ahead and it through the mounting location coming out on the access hole here on the side of the frame. Now we'll take our 9/16carriage bolt, thread it onto the fish wire and pull it down into place. We'll then go ahead and remove the fish wire from the carriage bolt. At the rear location we'll take the smaller square hole spacer block and we'll feed it in from the rear of the frame lining it up with our mounting location. We'll go ahead and take our fish wire, feed it through the rear mounting location through the square hole spacer block. Now we'll take 9/16 bolts, feed it on to the end of the fish wire and pull it down into place.

We can then remove the fish wire from the carriage bolt. We'll repeat the same process over here on the driver's side. We'll bolt the driver and the passenger side. Notice that there's a wiring harness that has a plastic tab that goes in through the frame here. It's a good idea to go ahead and pull them out for now until you have the hitch up into position. It will make things a little easier for you. For this application we're going to need to add a quarter inch thick spacer block at the forward most mounting location.

To keep the spacer block in place we'll then go ahead and use a little electrical tape. It's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you raise the hitch up into position. With the hitch raised up into position we'll go ahead and install the 9/16 hex flange nuts on all four of the locations. Keep in mind that everything we do on one side will be repeated over on the other side. Next we'll go ahead and make sure that the two side holes line up. We're going to make sure that the bolt will go all the way in. We'll go ahead and check this out on both sides.

Now that we've checked the opening on both of the side slots here. Now we'll go ahead and tighten down the four hex flange nuts we just installed. Then we'll check them with the manufacturer's specification. For the side mounting locations we'll be using a 9/16 bolt, a 9/16 flat washer, some round hole spacer blocks, and a 9/16 flange nut. To install this we're going to need to first put a couple of spacer blocks in between the frame and the receiver hitch. You want to put in enough spacer blocks that the tow hook will not be pulled over towards the receiver when tightening down. In this case it looks like two spacer blocks work just fine. Once we have our two spacer blocks into position, we'll then take our flat washer and slide it over the 9/16 bolt, then we'll insert the bolt from the outside of the vehicle towards the center of the vehicle through the receiver, the spacer blocks, and finally the tow hook. We'll then put another round hole spacer block on followed by the flange nut. We'll go ahead and tighten them down. Then we'll check them to the manufacturer's specification. Then we'll go ahead and push the two plastic tabs we removed earlier that hold part of the factory wiring harness in place. That will do it for our installation of the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver Part No. C15809 on our 2014 Dodge Ram Pick-Up 2500 Series. .

Exactly as advertised, easy installation. I purchased this hitch to avoid spending well over a thousand dollars on a torklift system. The torklift system is awesome if your towing a community behind your truck, i am only towing my motorcycle. There doesn't seem to be much in between the extremes for hitches that accommodate hitch extensions. As fore warned by the etrailer staff this hitch did not allow the use of my standard Torklift camper tie-downs. So i had to modify the tie-downs and have some welding done to compensate for the modifications. I am very happy with the installation and believe the hitch and extension will allow me to tow my cycle trailer with zero issues. Thanks etrailer! 432232

BEAST MODE ON! This thing is HUGE! I used to have a receiver integrated into a Ranch Hand bumper but found that massive bumper was only attached via the stock bumper brackets and we almost lost a 11k lbs trailer load recently. We upgraded to this massive CLASS V hitch and we are impressed. Super easy to install with a 2nd person. My only complaint is it sits a little far back when used in combination with a Ranch Hand bumper such that the hitch was about 4" short of making it to the hole for the pin or for the pintle latch to open. So when you have a plasma cutter you simple just make it fit ;) 553810

The hitch took a few days to ship once it got to the final shipping location the package was damaged and shipped back to etrailer (ups shipment fault not etrailer) without me ever seeing the box. I called etrailer and they shipped a new one out within minutes. Talk about awesome. It arrived in a few days unharmed. As far as installation on my Dodge Ram 3500 dually, it was pretty straight forward. There was one issue. The most forward bolt had to have a rectangle steel piece, that must be fished through the frame rail. This step was a nightmare and I ruined one of my telescoping magnets. Overall great product, heavy and the finish looks great. 476669

Hitch has performed flawlessly with zero issues. I use it to tow my boat twice a month and have also used it to tow a few vehicles on a flat bed trailer. Bolts have never come lose and I love knowing the system is rated for way more than what I am towing.

Five star for price and shipping. Three star to curt. The hitch is square with the truck. Where the ball hitch slides in is not square with the rest of the hitch. The ball hitch sits at a 6:30 position. Works fine, looks bad. 401649

Tough hitch, I wish the receiver part was 1/2 longer so I could use weight safe hitch in up position. It does not stick out as far as stock so it hits bumper in up position.

I ordered this class-V hitch to pull a 22' bumper-pull, tandem-axle trailer I bought for a compact tractor and implements, with a total trailer gross trailer weight of 12,000 pounds with a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500. The hitch fit under the OEM class-IV hitch, which is still installed on my truck). I had it installed. It took less than an hour, and I was on my way. Very heavy-duty (overkill for my trailering needs), and looks great on the back of my truck. 294657

2007 Dodge Ram Mega Cab

I received my order in 2 days, amazing ! This hitch is burly, and install was easy. I installed this on my 2007 Dodge mega cab 4wd with factory hitch. I asked about compatibility of this hitch with Torklift camper mounts and was told they would work. They do not ! Well, they do if you have a shop that can cut off the inside of the mount and weld to the side plates of the new hitch, luckily I had that capability. Install went from 40 minutes to 2 hours, but should be even stronger. 171964

Ask the Experts about this Curt Trailer Hitch

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Trailer Hitch for 2012 Ram 3500 that Replaces the Factory Installed Trailer Hitch
  • For your 2012 Ram 3500 with factory trailer hitch I recommend the Draw-Tite Class V hitch # DT45509. The factory hitch will need to be removed so this hitch can be installed. Once installed the receiver will be right up under the bumper in the same location as the stock hitch was. All of the other options require mounting a hitch so that the receiver will be below the factory receiver and you will lose the ground clearance. I also recommend etrailer.com Ball Mount Kit for 2-1/2" Hitches...

  • Recommendation for Towing a Trailer with a Hitch Extension
  • The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class V Commercial Duty - 2-1/2" # C15809 is a great option for your 2011 Ram 2500 as long as you are okay with a 24 inch hitch extension like # C45048. This will give you a gross trailer weight of 8,000 lbs when used with weight distribution, so a weight distribution system would be required. Your other option is to use the TorkLift SuperHitch Original Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class V - Dual 2" Receivers # TLD1102 instead...

  • Does Curt Hitch C15809 Fit w/Same Torklift Rear Camper Tie-Downs as Factory Hitch on 2003 Ram 3500
  • For your 2003 Dodge Ram 3500 long bed dually with the factory installed trailer hitch you are likely using rear camper tie-downs # TLD3109. If you switch to a non-Torklift aftermarket trailer hitch you would need to use # TLR3500 for the rear tie-downs. This will be the case for any non-Torklift aftermarket hitch. If you did go with a Torklift aftermarket hitch such as # TLD1102 or # TLD1102-30 then you would still need different rear tie-downs, # TLR3503.

  • Curt Class V Trailer Hitch for a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 with Factory Trailer Hitch
  • The factory trailer hitches on the 2006 Dodge Ram 2500s are welded on. You can add a Class V Curt hitch, # C15409 for a 2 inch receiver or # C15809 for a 2-1/2 inch receiver, and either will install beneath the factory hitch. I have linked videos showing example installations of these hitches for you. Trailer hitch # C15704 will not work because it was designed for truck models that do not have the factory hitch.

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 with Factory Trailer Hitch
  • The factory hitch on the 2004 Dodge Ram is welded to the bumper beam on the truck. The bumper beam is a round, curved piece of steel. In order to remove the factory hitch it would have to be torched off and you would not want to cut off any of the bumper beam. The heat from cutting off the hitch could still affect the bumper beam so it is not advisable to remove the factory hitch. I recommend going with a hitch that is designed to fit beneath the factory hitch, like # 41929 that you...

  • You will not be able to remove the factory hitch on your 2007 Dodge Ram because it is welded and integrated into the bumper cross member which it welded to the truck frame. You would need to use a hitch that fits around the factory hitch. For a Class V hitch, you can use Curt # C15809. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you to view. I also recommend the etrailer ball mount kit # EBMK2416. It comes with a ball mount, 2 balls, a hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag. For trailer wiring, if needed, use # 119175KIT. I have linked instructions for the wiring...

  • Curt Trailer Hitch Fit for 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 Mega-Cab 4x4 Short Bed Pickup
  • Curt's 2-inch Class V hitch # C15409 is a confirmed fit on your 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 with factory hitch and factory bumper. The 2-1/2-inch hitch part # C15809 is also confirmed to fit. Both are designed to work with the stock spare tire but they have not been tested with the wider 285mm tire. The spare may fit, maybe with a bit of maneuvering, but we cannot say for sure. Your truck's towing capacity will remain as stated in the manual. Even if you install air bags and tires rated for...

  • Best Trailer Hitch for a 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 with the 2" OEM Trailer Hitch
  • I recommend using the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C15809 for your 2006 Dodge Ram 3500. This is a Class V trailer hitch with a 2-1/2" receiver. It has a Gross Towing Weight (GTW) rating of 20,000 lbs and a Tongue Weight (TW) rating of 2,700 lbs. Keep in mind that your Ram 3500 needs to be rated for those weights to tow at the full capacity of the trailer hitch. This trailer hitch requires that the factory bumper still be installed, but it can actually fit under your OEM 2" trailer hitch....

The TorkLift hitch has already been discontinued so it is no longer in our fit guide. I do not know the reason why it was discontinued as that wasn't disclosed to us. If it...

  • Curt Trailer Hitch Fit on 2008 Dodge Ram 3500 With Factory Hitch
  • The Curt Hitch # C15809 that fits on your 2008 Dodge Ram 3500 sits directly below the factory hitch, as you can see in this photo a customer provided of his hitch installed on a 3500. Though we have not test fit this hitch on an '08 Ram 3500, we have fit them on similar model years and found there is - approximately - less than 18 inches from the ground to the bottom of the hitch. I would not be able to confirm that exact distance on your truck but that should give you a general idea...
